Washington, DC
As a new resident of Petworth I've been getting to know the local restaurants. Andrene's is the first place I tried not because I had a hankering for amazing Caribbean food, but because they are located about one block from my house.
The store front is unassuming and modest -- in fact, you could walk or drive by a million times and not notice it unless you're really paying attention. They usually have a chalk board sign out on the side walk with the day's specials.
The food and the service are down right homey and comforting. You're always greeted with a warm smile and cheerful hello. As cliche as this sounds you can taste the soul in this food -- it's seriously some of the best food that I've had. I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered.
As others have mentioned, they do have bullet proof glass inside, but so do all the business establishments in this area, but don't let this detract from your decision to try this joint because if you do you're missing out!
I usually order the jerk chicken or the ox tail with rice and peas and cabbage, but any of the fish is done well too.
If you're looking for a down right delicious, and inexpensive meal-- eat here. I promise you'll develop a craving for this food and turn it into a place you return to -- at least I hope you do because I want it to be around for a very long time! -

Andrenes what can I say hummmm...............
Divey joint done right!
yes will be surprised at the food when you enter into the little Iron Caged doors and windows and you walk up to a bullet resistant window to order your food.
So ordered:
Jerk Chicken
Ox Tail
Coco Bread
Jerk Chicken was on point with the spices and peas and rice was good and cabbage was nicely done
Ox Tail damn that was good but a lil on the dry side compared to Sweet Mango Cafe down on GA Ave and New Hampshire, spices were on point but not enough gravy, peas and rice and cabbage was good would have been better if more of the ox tail gravy was on it
CoCo bread kinda reminds me of the Kings Hawaiian bread but a lil on the dry side.
Definitely will be back and hoping they put more gravy on the rice. -

Great Caribbean food in a giant NYC taxi cab! (The bulletproof glass that divides the counter)
Curried goat was great. Service was very helpful, and cheerful.
Delicious, and great experience. -

My favorite Caribbean spot in the city!!
As soon as you walk in you're greeted with a smile. I tend to be one of those annoyingly indecisive customers who asks questions about everything on the menu but the women behind the counter was not phased by this. She actually allowed me to sample multiple items! Can I just say best macaroni and cheese ever!!! Don't let me get started on the cornbread which i believe is a sweet potato flavor (seriously though it taste like cake and melts in your mouth! MMMMM!) and the chicken...so tender, juicy, delicious. Come here! You will not be disappointed! Oh...and bring cash, when I came I don't believe there was a credit card machine, but I could be wrong :-/ Damn memory... -

You could walk past this place 100 times and not notice it. Or maybe, if you did take a look inside, you would be put off by the bullet proof glass with the pass through for money to go in and food to come out. Or by the non-existent decor.
But if you're looking for amazingly good Caribbean food at great prices with friendly, knowledgeable service, get yourself in here.
I'm not even a meat eater, and I thought the jerk chicken was outstanding. Peppery, but in a complex, satisfying way, with layers of heat and pungency. The cooked cabbage was a nicely low key accompaniment. Fries may or may not be 'authentic' Caribbean (I wouldn't know), but they're worth the calories. My buddy had the curried goat and was as satisfied as I was.
Overall, the best ratio of tasty food to (not so) impressiveness in a restaurant I've encountered in a long time. The polar opposite of trendy places with style and attitude, but forgettable food. -

The food was..what to be expected. Sweet Mango still has the Best jerk in DC. HOWEVER, the saving grace is the customer service! I almost forgot I was a customer. They Andrene and everyone else where so welcoming, I thought i was at one of ky Aunts' house. They were friendly and allow you to taste the product before hand.
Prices were decent, about average with mom and pops. Parking wasn't bad. The facility was clean and without sensless clutter (as you get with some places).
Just don't get there too late, when the food runs out..you're just s.o.l. -

This place is less than a mile from where I'm currently living. I need to be careful not to come here daily. I don't have many options (this area is largely a food desert), but Andrene's is tops.
The food I bought included a large order of chicken which came with rice and beans, some cabbage and plantains. The rice and beans were spicy. The entire meal had a bite to it because the spice from the rice and beans permeated my styrofoam buffet.
I left here wanting to try everything on their menu. That was before I'd even started eating. I took my heavy styrofoam-box-in-a-plastic-bag to my car and drove back home to the safe confines in this run-down neighborhood.
I ended up eating out of this box for 3/4 of my entire day. I ate this food for breakfast and lunch, and a little more before I threw it away at dinner. There was still food in there, I just couldn't handle it any more. The spice caught up with me at dinner time.
The chicken skin is really good, though I don't encourage eating chicken skin so liberally. Be careful because you might easily go through it all. The large order is not for one person. You'll be fine with a regular order. The plantains...well they don't give you that many, but they're excellent. I ordered an extra plantains side order and it's still sitting in my fridge. More than enough food. The rice and beans were excellent. I also really enjoyed the cabbage. It was kind of like a side salad that you're really looking forward to.
I associate pure excitement with this place, knowing that I'll get a heavy dose of flavor, spice, and fulfillment. But it is a heavy dose. Come hungry and with a friend. And then get out of the neighborhood! -

The great thing about this spot is that they will offer you a sample of their food. We tried the mac and cheese (wonderful) and the goat (delicious). We ordered oxtails (fall off the bone, spiced up right) with red beans and rice as well as whiting with the mac and cheese and collard greens (a bit salty) plus cornbread (warm, tasted a bit like a spice cake, it was delicious).
I am looking forward to the day when this spot is able to accommodate some table and chairs. It would be so worth it to sit and enjoy the great food and great customer service. We shall return! -

O..M..G.. some of the best Caribbean food i've head in DC. This is a total neighborhood spot. When I called to place my order, Andrene herself answered and was super helpful and friendly. When I arrived I could put a face to the voice. She was super bubbly... She gave me 2 samples of other stuff that I didn't order.
The small Jerk Chicken was a lot of food for one person. The chicken was moist and spicy. The red beans and rice had a spice was super delicious. The cabbage was awesome and flavorful.
I will definitely visit this place more, its not far from my place.!!!!!!! -

So I visited my bro a few weeks ago and was at the laundromat across from this spot, got that crazy spur of the moment intense hunger thing and glanced across the street. Another moment where I didn't have time to check before entering so to avoid oxtail disappointment I opted for the curry goat and so super excited that I did. It was great, all of it, the rice, gravy, flavor, even the cabbage had flavor and that, I have NEVER tasted from a Caribbean restaurant, yet. Not even Ron's Caribbean in Philly and I'm in love with them. Usually the cabbage is steamed which, I have no problem with, it's always just bland so I melted into my platter right outside the laundromat.
OH, I forgot about the plantains, another part of the typical Caribbean dish that I set myself up to be disappointed about like the cabbage. Cuz you just can't trust everybody's plantains but they were so sweet and tender, I got pissed for the first time that I only got 2 on my plate. I was so skeptical about tasting them I waited 'til after I drove back to bro's house to try them and they were closed, I woulda got more! -

Different cities and regions excel at different ethnic cuisines. This is well known.
For instance, Chicago lays claim to delicious Polish fare; Los Angeles serves up unrivaled Mexican eats; the neighboring San Gabriel Valley features a dizzying array of Chinese specialties; and, Japanese food rises to stellar heights in Honolulu.
The DC area, similarly, has its own signature ethnic cuisines as well. Ethiopian cuisine (with its epicenter along 9th Street, NW), Korean food (featured so prominently in Annandale), and the food of Peru (represented so uniquely by the many purveyors of pollo a la brasa), are inarguably the three heavy hitters around these parts.
However, along with them, there is a fourth player in the ethnic food hierarchy; and, that is Caribbean food. Honestly, no city or region in the United States can truly trump the DC area when it comes to serving up the delicacies of the West Indies.
Caribbean eateries, ranging from sit-down restaurants and humble carryout shops, are ubiquitous throughout Prince George's County and the District (the two jurisdictions where immigrants from the Caribbean generally reside). One such place, an exemplar of the "humble carryout shop," is Andrene's.
Even with bullet-proof plexiglass (but featuring a spic n' span interior and hospitable service), Andrene's Carryout is warm and inviting (offering a no-frills menu that uncompromisingly focuses on authentic Caribbean staples).
Here, on a random winter's day, the stewed oxtails were flavorful and genuinely good. However, the oxtails were a tad on the chewy side (which prevented them from being out-right delectable - but, proudly "good" nonetheless). Indeed, the tendons and fibers in the individual "cylinders" of meat needed a more prolonged period of cooking.
The oxtails were tantalizingly close to reaching that rarified status where they would have transformed into the fork tender, gelatinous marvels that we all know and love. With the best oxtails, the meat literally falls off the bone effortlessly. Here, with my platter of oxtails, a little bit of gnawing was still needed. However, that this was the case does not necessarily detract from Andrene's quality. A rarified status is just that--rare. So, Andrene's should not be unduely penalized.
The curried goat, on the other hand, was flawless. It was unctuous, genuinely fork tender (unlike the oxtails), and bursting with rich flavor. As an added plus, there was not the slightest hint of gaminess (which is a not too uncommon characteristic of goat meat - even at the most accomplished restaurants). The liberal presence of spices in the braising liquid (notably, some targeted ginger slices) really added a depth of flavor to the curry and provided a "clean" overall profile.
The sides that I sampled, consisting of parboiled rice, stewed cabbage, plantains, macaroni n' cheese, collard greens, and French fries (with a gratuitous slice of cornbread too for good measure), were skillfully and attentively prepared and did not play the part of "stepchildren" to the meats. The sides commanded respect and confidently demanded attention in their own right.
Overall, the demerits that I noted do not constitute egregious offenses. Let us not draw any negative conclusions. That would misrepresent how I feel about Andrene's. Unequivocally, Andrene's is top-notch; and, I affirm that my meal there was one of the best Caribbean dining experiences that I have had anywhere in the DC metropolitan area.
Indeed, even as I left, I performed some mental calculations to determine just when I would be back in the Brightwood area and what I would order next (if I do not act on my inclination to try the same exact entrees again). -

Great Ox. Hands DOWN the best I've had outside of home cooking, in DC. I've been coming here throughout the years & stopped by today for a quick patty & cocoa bread. Patty - DELICIOUS but they don't seem to have the recipe right for the bread. It was TOUGH :-/
But the bread is what usually gives restaurants a run for their money. Some things you can only get right at home. -

The menu at Andrene's may not delve into the depths of West Indian cooking that you can find elsewhere in DC, but DAMN.... the things that they do cook are really exceptional. This is the go-to spot for when we're feeling some Caribbean food for lunch at the lab. It's cheap, close-by, and the people are wonderful.
My standard order from Andrene's is the curry goat with rice and peas and cabbage. The goat is crazy delicious... slide-off-the-bone, tender, just a slight gaminess, but rich and flavorful. The cabbage and rice and peas usually lead to some tremendous butt-thunder later on, but it's absolutely worth it; the delightful cabbage has a slight spice to it, and the rice and peas soak up all the goat juices and fat. I always get a large, but I wish they had an extra-large because it's so damn tasty. If not the goat, I may opt for the oxtail stew which hits all the right spots. As with any West Indian joint, Andrene's have jerk chicken. I've been able to sample the jerk from other people's orders and it is LEGIT... just right on the spiciness, deep flavor, nice char, and moist. But really, why would you order jerk chicken when you could have curry goat or oxtail?!
So don't be a bumbaclot.... go to Andrene's and get messy with some curry goat. -

I was about to give up on finding descent Caribbean food in DC. Then along came Andrene's. This place knocks it out of the park! Don't let the wall of bullet-proof glass and the sketch neighborhood scare you away. This place is IT. I went with the oxtails, rice and peas, cabbage, and some sweet plantains. The oxtails were meltingly tender with a savory sauce rich with long-stewed meat goodness. all that yummy sauce soaked into the stellar rice and beans, turning the delicious into swoon-worthy. Cabbage and plantains were equally good. I will definitely be a frequent customer here. -

In the neighborhood to check out the Lincoln Cottage, picked this place at random off Yelp, took the grub over to Soldier's Home to eat. Hard to imagine being happier.
Oxtails were a touch tough, but very tasty. Curry Goat, Curry Chicken, Jerk Chicken -- all spectacularly good. Beans & rice were quite tasty.
Grabbed beef patties, cabbage, plantains and mac & cheese off the sides menu. Patties are packaged/frozen and spicier than the brands available on the West Coast -- still tasty.
Wish we had a place like this in the SF bay area. -

I have so many positive things to say about this place including the owner's down home personalty, I don't know where to start.
Click on my user name you will see that I eat out a lot and will write a review to share my experience.
From the moment I stepped into Andrene's, I connected with the owner immediately. She is very hands-on with her customers and she LOVES it! While waiting for my order, oh yeh some items are cooked to order and not sitting around under heat lamps, I watched this woman interact with every customer that entered her establishment. She doled out advice to one young man after he made a statement about "not voting". She didn't tell him how to vote, but told him why he should vote. That alone was better than anything on the menu.
I won't say what I ordered but while there I had a chance to sample a variety of dishes. As picky as I am, I found EVERYTHING delectable. I can't point to a single item and tell you to try it. However, whatever you choose, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed, especially the ___________. Fill in the blank and write your own review (lol). I sampled 3 dishes which had a bone....the meat literally fell off the bone each time.
The prices ($9 dinner/sides) are a steal for such great food, and you get a lot. I ate some that evening and took the rest for my lunch the following day. Even had the white folks at my job asking me about the seasoning after the microwave sent the aroma throughout the place. lol
To say this place is the best in DC...is an understatement. I double dare you to try it out with the highest expectations your taste buds can desire.
Ms Andrene... Ma'ma, U R Doing it over there on 4th and Kennedy NW !!!!!! -

Why 5 stars?
After trying many different Caribbean/west Indian food establishments in DC I have to say Andrene's offers the best total value. Teddy's food may taste a little better but the price & quantity more than makes up for it. My only knock against this place is a limited menu. I have eaten here 3 times and ordered a different item every time and walked away very satisfied every time. Ox tail, jerk, Stewed chicken. You name it, it's hittin! Great prices (40% cheaper than Teddy's). This place has been well reviewed in the Post & for good reason. Great food at a great price! I'm a fan. -

Great neighborhood spot with excellent food (Jerk Chicken and red beans and rice are delicious) and really affordable prices (large meal for $9....lunch for $5).
This place is probably the best Caribbean takeout I've had in DC. -
Review from Jane S.
Albany, NY
This gets four stars for serving the best food in the neighborhood. It is affordable, tasty and near where I live.
The dining landscape in this neighborhood is pretty bleak. There are a couple of decent places to get breakfast, but at dinner time there is almost nothing going on up here but some truly awful Chinese carryout.
I've never been here for breakfast, but I go regularly for dinner. Their meals are absurdly large and are served with rice and a vegetable. Personally, I love cabbage.
I usually order the jerk chicken. It is easily enough chicken for two meals. It is spicy, but not too spicy. I even received a warning from the owner who was concerned that I might not be able to handle it.
The curried chicken is also good, but served up in pieces that were clearly hacked apart with a cleaver. I enjoyed it, but could not handle all the pieces of little bones that were created by the cutting method. I am a wimp like that.
Also, you can regularly find 10% off coupons in the DC North free paper, which is pretty sweet. -

Perfectly spiced, super tender jerk chicken with rice & beans and cabbage. Curried goat was a bit drab this time. Oxtail had great flavor and just fell off the bone but was too fatty for my taste. Tons of food for the money - great value!

I made a trip especially for this place after one of my trusted yelpers gave great ratings of this place.
Well worth the trip. I gotta say, the oxtail the best I've tasted in this area. I had it once in another country, but this one came darn close to the best! The oxtail was cooked just right. The meat and bone just came right off without being too soft. The sauce used had great complimentary spices. I can tell the oxtail was stewing in a long time in this sauce.
The goat was pretty good too. It was cooked with the right pieces of goat (ribs, shoulder, and some brisket portions). The sauce was done well. I noticed some whole spices. The only thing I didn't like was that it was really over-salted for my taste.
The beans and rice that came with the meal was done very well as well.
-1 star for over-salted meal. Other than that i would definitely get the oxtail again and again! Next time, I will try the jerk chicken as well. -

the place is just spectacular. i will write a more complete review when i have more time but for now i'll just say that i have not had a better eating experience since moving to DC 2 months ago. it is that good. an unassuming, modest, buffet/cafeteria style joint, but oh... the food is so good. really, folks. the bomb. the collard greens deserve special notice.
and the owner couldn't be nicer or have more charm. she even gave us a free holiday cookie for the holidays.
i shall return (often) and you should check it out as well. you won't be sorry. -

I decided to pick-up lunch today at Adrene's, I ordered the Large ox tail meal with came with rice & beans, cabbage and two small pieces of plantains. I also brought a extra side of plantains. Everything was very good and tasty but I didnt care for the cabbage because it seemed over cooked. I will go back and try the curry goat and brown stew chicken without the cabbage.

Silver Spring, MD
A barely visible little hole in the wall carryout spot, this place offers something subtle yet sweet, very much so like the demeanor of its owner. But getting into the food, let me first say that the prices are very fair, yet the portions of the food is enormous. I ordered the large Jerk chicken meal, and was really only able complete barely half of it. Carrying the meal back down a few blocks felt like lugging around a little bowling ball. At first glace the chicken itself is blackened and seems a little overcooked or possibly over spiced but the chicken was surprisingly moist. Same thing goes for the vegetable side that comes with the meal. At first it seems just completely over boiled but after digging into it for a bit and having a taste test the food turned out to be cooked just right. Oh and the Jamaican beef patties. Its delicious! Much better than what get at Negril IMO. Sadly there's no seating and you'll have to order your meal through a bulletproof glass, but that's part of the charm and danger of eating at carryout places in DC.
The only thing this place could really improve upon is there Sweet Tea. Its overly sweet and its actually a mixture of lemonade and sweet tea, but overwhelmingly sweet. Diabetes Sweet.
Other than that all you need is 10 bucks in your pocket a serious appetite and this place will feed you well -
Review from Audrey X.
Monterey, CA
I swear I had a perfectly good reason to be walking on Kennedy Street at night. And I just wasn't feeling the taqueria, so I took my chances--good move, me.
The very nice, enthusiastic, happy--very, very enthusiastic--lady behind the plexiglass offered me tastes of a handful of selections before I had even ordered. I have to say that it was pretty darn good service for any establishment, so the plexiglass just makes it all the more memorable. The cabbage wasn't to my taste (a little mushy, but flavorful, so it might please you if you are into cooked cabbage).
I ordered the plantains--and this is what really impressed me--she brought me a sample, just to make sure that I really wanted them. I am a certifiable plantain curmudgeon, so I was grateful that she recognized that the plantains were a little greener than some of us are into, and gave me the opportunity to veto them (which I did) before taking them home. She explained that with the availability of plantains on the wholesale produce market on the mid-Atlantic, there's only so much that one can do. I appreciate people who take their plantains seriously enough to be upfront with me.
The collards were very flavorful, and in little bitty pieces. The mac and cheese was interesting--very solid-cheesy, probably with egg as another reviewer mentioned. I usually don't go for this type, and prefer the very saucy stovetop kind, but this one was sort of spicy, which was cool. And the red beans and rice came with an optional brown gravy. Now I'm sure I don't want to know what was in that gravy but oh hot damn was it good. The taqueria down the street is good, but this place is a gem, too.
Just please, Andrene's -- if you served kale that was anything like the collards, I'd buy up the whole batch. -

Andrene's is around the block from my home so i started patronizing about a month ago. I love the place. Andrene knows me by name and has smile whenever I see her. The food selection is typical for the take-out Caribbean food spots in the area, but the quality of food is superior to most. In addition, her food is consistent. I've ordered chicken from 3 Caribbean spots in the area and I'm never sure what to expect. I know I'll receive good food consistently and at a fair price at Andrene's.

Washington, DC
I'm not sure from where I learned about Andrene's (probably a taxi driver), but I'm glad I did! All I knew was the name and the address. Turns out it's one of those carry-out, order behind the bullet-proof plexiglass type of establishments. But, hey, if the food's good, I'm fine eating in my car; it was a nice night anyways.
We got there about 15 minutes before closing. I used my usual technique and asked the woman behind the counter (owner?) what I should order. Good move (once again) on my part ... I loved her and I loved the food.
She was very generous and gave me tastes of the:
* jerk chicken (moist and had a nice kick to it, but not overwhelming);
* curry chicken (full flavored, nice sauce, had bones);
* macaroni and cheese - it does say Soul Food in the name (not typical: good amount of cheese mixed throughout, the sauce was probably mixed with an egg - that kind of mac & cheese - but there were onions. It was yummy, but not my image of m & c. Hmmm, come to think of it, you can probably see that I'm a serious m & c eater!);
* Then there was the taste of oxtail. Once again, moist meat, full flavored, rich gravy. It wasn't that it tasted better than the others samples, but it turns out that was what I was craving (and hadn't know it). I got it with the rice and beans, which were fine, the cabbage (chopped carrots, but a bit too salty for my taste), and a side of plantains (good sized, not so big that they were starchy in the middle, not so small that they were all sauté/oil flavor-they were just right. They also remained good as they cooled off).
My friend ordered stewed chicken (not as good as the others, flavors seemed less complex, but it was still good compared to other Caribbean places).
It was nice that each dish had its own distinct flavor and the sauces didn't turn into a general taste-mash.
So, the positives were: loved my food, the woman was like mom if she had a menu's worth of food in her kitchen, it's nowhere near other food centers so it may remain a secret (except for this rave review) and ... there's even a 10% discounts for Howard students, police, postal workers, firefighters, and seniors (bring your ID), as well as lunch specials.
The only negatives were: it felt so nice to be there I wish there were tables (though they did have a counter-type space w/a few stools) and though we had napkins, we didn't get eating utensils in our carry out bags (I assume this was a mistake).
--------------------------
OK, I just finished my leftovers ... that I reheated on a plate, because, well, it was deserving; it would have been a shame to eat out of the Styrofoam pack. It was still good, but seemed saltier than I remembered. But keep in mind, I'm not a big salt eater.
Still, I loved the place and will definitely be back soon.
