Interesting that some have had less than stellar service at the counter, the women who have waited on me have been across-the-board excellent.  And I am in here twice a month (more actually, but I'd never admit to it).    Their lemon tarts are the very best dessert they make. The lovely fruit tarts, Matterhorns, rum balls--sigh, I could go on forever.  Try the puff pastry sticks in boxes in the freezer next time you need to take an appetiser, or the little meat pastries.  The Buche Noel is the best traditional dessert at Christmas.  GREAT salad dressing bottled and ready to go.  Coffee cakes & breakfast pastries to die for.    Really, everything is just a treat.    Also, a great, quiet place for coffee and a pastry in the mornings--no one knows about it so it is private.  And at the very end of the day any pastry items left in the case are sold at HALF OFF.  So that means all the yummy things are fresh every morning...

I love Andre's, can you tell?

What is the deal with this place and service?  I love going here for lunch, and service in the dining room is AWESOME.

But after lunch, I was picking up a cake and some candies and both of the women I dealt with at the pastry/candy counter were absolutely rude. I asked about a couple of the unmarked pastries and got sighs and eyerolls and a sarcastic tone of voice with my response.

Get it together, Andre's.  This has clearly been a consistent problem for you for several years.  Whatever you're doing in terms of training, it's not working.

Andre's is sensory overload in the best way possible. The waitstaff in the lunchroom is always friendly. I've had the same waitress both times but she is very personable and professional. LOVE HER. The food is simply out of sight! If you are there for any length of time you may actually forget you're in KC and transport to a real Swiss chalet, if only in your mind.
The chocolate shop is very tempting and everything I've tried has been more than worth the indulgent price and calories. The ladies there can be a tad cold...not quite Soup Nazi caliber, but they'll still bristle your nerves if you are just wanting to order and go.
If you are a visitor to KC or are bringing visitors to KC you MUST have lunch at Andre's and get some chocolates to go. It may be in the bylaws or a city ordinance or something. You just have to do it. Kidding! But seriously...

Just had to throw in my 2 cents on the lunch experience here...I love the concept, no fountain drinks and 2 or 3 main course options with sides, drink, and desert at one flat price.  Had the lasagna and the carrot salad, everything was great but a specific OMG - I love that carrot salad, very smart of them to have it available to take home by the pint (I think it was about that size).

If you haven't had lunch at André's, you haven't been to Kansas City!

André's is a Swiss gourmet bakery that would be among the best if were in Switzerland. The deserts are phenomenal. I have purchased many a torte to make a family gathering special.

But my favorite part is the lunch. It's the only time they serve something besides the deserts. The chef makes two Swiss gourmet entrees to choose from, you never know what they'll be until you go. Of course, there's always quiche Loraine and cheese quiche as an alternate.

Be sure to go early as there will be line waiting for tables.

My family has been going here for three generations. While André has long since passed on, as has his wife many years later, (I never knew her real name since everyone called her Mrs. André,) the standards are just as high as if he were overseeing the kitchen. My grandmother would take me here every time I would visit, and it was the highlight of trip each time. She had been going since it opened as she worked nearby and would go for lunch each day. So she became friends with André and his wife. Coming here makes it feel like all three of them are still with me.

I really don't have anything ground breaking to add to the rest.  Great food, stellar chocolates, and a price that reflects the quality.

What I can add is a little tip about the "Seconds" Chocolate selections.  Each day, they pull aside those little morsels that don't fit their quality standards, and make them available ala carte for half price.  My wife and I have done this on several occasions, and maybe we just aren't sophisticated enough but we have no idea why they are considered "Seconds".  They are always top quality according to our crude JoCo pallettes.  They won't have as many options, but at half price I can make that sacrifice.

Chocolate & cookies only review. I have not tried the lunch yet but have only heard good things.

I LOVE this place. The chocolates are very good. Some of them are pretty standard treats, but they are also trying some more interesting flavor combinations. According to my taste buds, they use good quality chocolate. My favorites are their chocolate covered orange peels and their pistachio marzipan chocolate. I love the Swiss influence, especially the unique chocolates and flavor combinations that their tradition brings to Andre's. Their tea cookies are ah-mazing. Their pricing is reasonable for high quality chocolates.

As for customer service, both my husband and I have had great customer service. However, I did experience poor service one time in which the young clerks were too busy gabbing/gossiping behind the counter to pay attention to their customers. Thus, I can completely understand others' complaints. I hope their service issues have improved, because I would hate to see this KC gem struggle.

Very busy little eatery behind the bakery and chocolate shop in back. Got seated immediately, it was harder to find parking than seating. The menu is just three items, and changes daily. I got the bratwurst spaetzle and salad. It was very good. The dumplings had sauerkraut over them and the sausage came with spicy mustard. It was served very expeditiously. The chocolate cake that I chose fro desert was the highlight of the meal!  There were six desert choices and the selection was difficult to make.  They all looked very tempting.  There was a cheescake, a milk chocolate cake, and a custard cake. I wanted them all and I was very pleased with the one I picked.

Hubs & I and assorted members of our families have been meeting at Andre's for lunch in the Tea Room for many years.  And when we recently enjoyed a lunch outing there, I realized I had neglected to do a Yelp review.  Visits used to be a yearly affair centered around Christmas time visits by out of town family members but now that our Sis lives locally, we make it a few more times per year.

The menu is served prix fixe with entree, salad or soup selection, lovely crusty bakery roll, dessert and choice of drink. The price is around $15.35 per person. The daily menu generally offers two entree selections each day. At least one entree will be meatless. Quiche Lorraine and Cheese quiche are also served daily if you do not wish either of the daily entrees.  On our recent visit I enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon, spatzil and a salad that included pickled beets and Hubby had Quiche Lorraine.  We both got Matterhorns which are lovely chocolate "mountains" with a dollop of whipped cream.

Service is quite good and the whole vibe is of a genteel nature where you never feel rushed or pressured to finish up and get out even though they have capacity crowds nearly every day.  Service is always efficient and many of their servers have been with Andre's for a long time, so you will feel pampered and looked after. The dining area is decorated with chalet detail and does not change very much but that does not imply that the surroundings are allowed to be shabby, just traditionally very much the same from year to year.

Since Andre's front of house is a very successful bakery, the dessert tray offers some very lovely and tasty creations most of which include some type of cake. The hardest part of your visit may be making the choice from the tray of only one dessert.

Tearoom Hours are Tuesday through Saturday and they are open from late morning until about 2:30 PM. The bakery hours are from 8:30 to 5:00. They are closed Sunday & Monday. During the Christmas holiday season the Main Street location may also be open on Monday, but I would suggest you check on the web or telephone the store to verify the operating hours before making the trip.

I nearly always love the food at the tearoom and really enjoy my visits to Andre's. Some traditions are just worth preserving and sharing the time with family is priceless.

Andrés  is one of those fabulous local businesses that is a true gem of Kansas City.

Andrés is one of my favorite stops for amazing truffles, baked goods, and deserts.  I've tried a few of their small cakes and baked goods.  Some of them were better than others, but all of them were rich and delightful.

The chocolate truffles has an amazing texture.  The outer shell is thin with a melt-in-your-mouth center.  Also, there is an extensive selection of flavors, shapes, and design.  It's definitely a great place to get a variety of beautiful and unique chocolates for a hostess gift, or just a few for yourself!  My favorite part about the truffles is that they keep some "seconds" or slightly imperfect truffles behind the counter.  Just ask to see their seconds, and you'll be presented with tray after tray of truffles available at a discounted price.  You never know what "imperfections" they may have made that day, but they are always delicious.

All of the staff is courteous and knowledgable.  Also, Andrés must treat their employees well, because their turnover rate is extremely low.  One woman I spoke with worked there for seven years.  Occasionally the staff is....how can I put it...aloof.  However, I have never found them to be rude, and they are always really helpful when it comes to making decisions about what to purchase.

Love the chocolate, staff, and shop.  Still haven't gotten to try their lunch - maybe next time!

Just an update on my resent visit. I've decided to downgrade my rating to a 3-stars. Lunch (my expectation of lunch is something cheaper than what I would pay for dinner) for 4 was $60.00... and they charged me an extra $1.50 for my "included" dessert because it was a "larger" petifore they offer.

Their portions are controlled like never before. I left hungry still and ended up raiding the samples at Costco (my destination after Andre's). The food was good, their desserts are delicious, but not for the likings of $60.00.

P.S. I stole the remaining dinner rolls my party didn't eat from the table and took them home. Take that, Andre's!

I agree with Teppi B., Andre's is good enough to top the list of restaurants I miss from afar.

Pleasant service, delicious desserts, petite portions and terribly good memories make Andre's one of my favorite restaurants in Kansas City.

Over the past 10 years and on numerous special occasions, I've enjoyed an all-inclusive meal of a salad, rolls, a main plate, dessert and beverage for something around $16. Not too shabby.

This review is 100% about their chocolates and chocolates counter.  I didn't eat lunch here, but I did stop in to buy a friend a few different chocolate confections as part of a new baby gift.

I'd heard how awesome this place was so I figured I couldn't go wrong.

When I walked in, I noticed the pastry/chocolate cases immediately and started looking them over for things to buy my friend.  Once I'd decided, I tried to get someone's attention for help, but the 4 people behind the counter were either too busy talking to each other or gossiping with another customer at the counter about their daughters' friends' mother.

Someone finally decided to look at me and meet my gaze and I asked their opinion on a few different truffles (truffles aren't my thing).  I was met with a blank stare and a shrug.  Then she left to go help 2 other people!  Helloooooo?

I'm not really used to feeling like I need to beg someone to actually buy something from their store.  But I finally got out of there after over 30 minutes (!!!), most of which was spent waiting on someone to actually sell me something.

The chocolates were ok.  I got my friend some truffles, a couple of chocolate tort things and some smaller chocolates and she shared them all with me.  None of it was really anything I'd go out of my way to buy again.  Even so, the service will probably make me avoid going here again.  We have MUCH better chocolatiers in KC.

I know, I know.  A Swiss restaurant.  You're thinking chocolate, coo-coo clocks, or maybe even a bank.  And generally, you'd be right about the Swiss.  But Andre's manages to be more than a great, great chocolate shop (the primary reason for your visit).  They also have a very simple "hot" or "cold" item for the day, priced the same and served quickly.  A very interesting eclectic crowd will join you and the tables are close without being close enough for you to hear everything your neighbor is saying.

Check off the "went to a Swiss restaurant in Missouri" item off your bucket list.

Of all the foodstuffs I miss from Kansas City, nothing ranks higher than Andre's.  Even Boulevard and barbecue take a back seat.

You should already know about the amazing chocolates, including the ever-popular chocolate covered almonds and orange peel.  Everything in the chocolate case is worth a try to find your favorite! (Try the seconds bags on top of the counter for a great, inexpensive sampler)

But if you don't know about the REST of Andre's offerings, you are missing out.  Lunch is an amazing treat--and it comes with a drink, roll, salad, sides and a dessert. What a wonderful break from standard lunchtime fare--even the sandwiches here are more exciting.

The pastries, cookies, baked goods, frozen items, hard to find imported foods...I could go on forever.  (And I have; ask anyone who has ever lived with me)

Needless to say, Andre's begs for repeat visits--not only to try all of the traditional items handed down for three generations, but also because there are always new things to try.

And, if you're coming out to California, can you please bring me some salad dressing?

In response to Andre's comment that they do European torte which has dryer cake because the frosting melts into the cake.
Cosentino's downtown market has European torte cakes just like yours but their cake is much more moist.
They don't have a large selection like Andre's but you'll feel satisfied, not disappointed.

This place is simple, elegant perfection.

It has a sweets shop in front and a dining room in back for lunch.

The "sweets" shop has everything from chocolates, cookies pastries and tortes.  Great place to pick yourself up some treats or a perfect place to pick up a torte for a special occasion.  I'm a huge fan of their chocolate covered almonds (the best you will ever have), the chocolate covered orange peels and the raspberry chocolate torte.  Many different sizes and price points to pick from.  Perfect for any occasion you could ever think of.

The restaurant is a simple, comfortable place to lunch.  Perfect for the "ladies that lunch" kind of crowd and those that enjoy the same.  Some of these well quaffed ladies have been lunching here for years.  I hope to grow into an ascot-wearing, well quaffed gentlemen that will be doing the same for years to come.  The food is great in its simplicity.

The service is always fantastic in either the front of back of Andre's.  They treat you like gold if you are a regular or not.  The entire place makes you want to become a regular.

Anyone and everyone should go to Andre's.  They make you feel welcome and serve a tremendous product.  Now go and enjoy!

Andre's is the place to go in KC for pastries and delicious confections, there's no doubt about it. The Napoleons are amazing, and it's tough to find any baked goods that won't blow your mind. The chocolates are definitely good but aren't on the level of the pastries, in my opinion.

The food is quite good, but the portions are very tiny. I'm not a huge guy, but I definitely need more food than they serve. Considering that lunch is a cool $15 - very expensive by KC standards - that's a downer. You'll be happy with the taste but will be left wanting more.

Andre's is one of the places I make a point to go to every time I come home to KC. It's way too good to pass up.

Andre's is my favorite "ladies who lunch" kind of place. Their lunch price has gotten a little high, but it's worth it for a special occasion because you really do get a lot of value for your money.

The experience starts the moment you walk in the door and smell the fabulous pastries. We'll get back to those.

The cafe offers about five or six different entree options that change from day to day, but two of them are always quiche, which I generally cannot resist. Lunch is served with fresh-baked rolls, unsalted butter, and a variety of little salads and sides.

Then there's the dessert tray. You get your choice of cake or pastry, and you're welcome to request something from the case that isn't on the tray. (If you're a lemon fan, get one of the lemon tarts. Transcendent!) I always have water with my lunch so I can get some of their wonderful coffee with my dessert. Even their decaf is delicious.

The entrees are very savory, but probably too small for someone with a hearty appetite. I never take my husband there for that reason, but my sister and girlfriends are happy to step into the void.

Though I have eaten lunch there a couple of times, and always enjoyed it, this review is primarily dedicated to the shop portion of Andre's.

I love everything about Andre's.  The tiled archway you walk under to enter - the chef logo printed on the pastry bags - how perfect all the pastries look lined up, or piled neatly - the attention to wrapping up your treat the staff provides - perusing the freezer/fridge cases just looking...quiche, main courses, ice cream, fondue, salad dressing - and of course, the choices and the taste!  Andre's is one of my happy spots.

Some of my favorite items are:

raspberry truffles - the dark pink spheres rolled in sugar

tea cookies - don't care about the price - this is a box of beauty, taste, and freshness

any of the pastries involving fruit

the pretzel bread sandwiches - in particular the salami and cheese one. it is a small torpedo of salty goodness...damnit, I could really go for one now!!

really almost anything.  Even the items I don't end up picking, I enjoy looking at in the case.

So many textures, tastes, and subtleties to delight your tongue.  Everything is meticulously handmade, and you can truly tell.

Swak!  A big kiss for you, Andre's.

Recommended are Andre's perfect mille-feuilles, mini cakes and tortes, as well as nearly all of it's other masterfully prepared European pastries and chocolates. Unlike lesser bakeries, the texture of Andre's mille-feuilles is perfectly flakey, crisp and buttery, never soggy. The cakes and tortes are perfection as well, with their own very fine, delicate texture, and taste, a far cry from pedestrian American cakes or cupcakes. Based on the very quality of just those two types of items alone, Andre's is one of my absolute favorite places in the city.

This is a great place for lunch, but it is worthwhile to look at the menu on the website before committing to dining plans.  The dining room does not have a printed menu, but instead features two specials daily, as well as a quiche (which is served daily).  Lunch is accompanied by choice of tea (hot or cold) or coffee as a beverage and a desert.  The cost comes to $13.90.  The proportions are not grossly huge, but you leave satisfied.
The real star of the menu is the desert.  My favorite is the little cherry tart, but everyone has a favorite, so it is worthwhile to come back several times to sample a variety of cakes and such (no hardship to the taste buds, but dangerous to the waistline!).  At the front of André's is a shop that simply sells the delicious desert delights, chocolates, and the like (as well as food that can be taken home and reheated).  Some of my favorite purchases include a bottle of the salad dressing (super rich, but very yummy), quiche (there is no better gift for someone who is stuck at home and doesn't wish to spend an hour in front of the oven), and the sweet rolls (which are best if reheated at home for a few moments in the oven before serving).

I've been to both André's locations and they are both nice. They both have that cozy tea room feeling about them. However, I really like sitting outside at the one out south when it's nice enough.

I've never had a bad meal here, but it's never blown me away either. Everything is fresh, and I've enjoyed the salads, and getting to choose a dessert off the tray is fun.

I have to say though, I HATE their style of cake. It's dry! Thin layers of dry cake with stuff in between the layers that somehow doesn't fix the dryness. I have enjoyed little tartlets and other desserts, just not the cake.

There have been times when I've had a young server, and they aren't always the best, but the service is never bad. It's definitely a fun place to go with a group of girlfriends who can behave themselves, say, before an afternoon of shopping.

Lunches!!! Eat their lunches!!! Usually one of the choices is a quiche, always excellent. Wonderful system, you don't have to ponder a menu, you go in, they tell you the few choices, then you anticipate dessert while you are filled with wonderful whatever you chose. You've gotta get dessert, it comes with the meal. WITH THE MEAL. What a system. Best girl food ever, but I've seen plenty of happy guys there too.

Unfortunately, I've never (gasp!) purchased anything from the bakery case as we are usually planning a long day of shopping and didn't want the stuff to sit in the car. Guess I can remedy that by carrying it along with me and munching while we shop!

I will never go to Andre's again.  Ever.  That breaks my heart to say, because I love their pastries and confections, but enough is enough.  I am sick and tired of being treated like garbage every time I enter the place.

In a review I wrote two months ago, I gave the place four stars, based on the food rather than on the service.  In that review I mentioned that the women behind the pastry counter tend to be frosty and unwelcoming.  The owner subsequently left me a comment, saying that the problem had been addressed.  Hah!

I went there today (04/29/2011), between 12:25 and 12:40pm.  Sweetie and I had just finished lunch at Jack Gage, the day was gorgeous, and we decided to walk the half-block to Andre's to get a few take away items for this evening.  The woman behind the counter was horrible to us.  She was a roundish pale woman with straight blonde hair pulled back in a low ponytail, wearing black.  (I say this for purposes of specific identification.)  She was sour, rude, distainful, pissy, unpleasant, derisive, you name it.  I wish I could think of additional adjectives at the moment, but words escape me.  If she were the only employee there like that, I wouldn't have paid too much attention.  But EVERY SINGLE TIME I have visited the place, the women, whichever woman, all of them, are the exact same way.  To me this behavior is beyond inexplicable.  And it is even more incomprehensible to me that management couldn't seem to care less.  As much as I love the confections, I will NEVER go back.

Andre's lost a very good, ten year customer today.  I wonder how many other customers the place has lost for the exact same reason.

HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE LUNCH PLACE IN KC, MO

lunch is only $12!!! i felt though I was robbing them... but the service and the pace was so slow that it really ticked me off. I was also surrounded by older customers (all 40+) and I think my lil sis and I were the youngest people there

Food: the right portion and they've got that whole "home-cooked/rustic" thing down

Service: let's not mention it again

    Price: CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!

chocolates & bakery stuff: OMG... I'M SO GONNA GET FAT!

*i would give five stars but i CAN NOT stand their slow service

I have a soft-spot in my heart for Andre's because it was the place my Mom used to take me when I was younger when we would have a girls-only day in KC.  Many years later it still makes me happy & impresses.

The dining room is like walking into a swiss cabin. Lunch is such a steal!  $14 for main dish, side, dessert, and drink (extra points for having no sodas)!  For my last lunch there I had poached trout in dill sauce which came with a side of carrot salad & a little rice pilaf.  All were perfectly cooked/seasoned & just the right size.  It's hard to choose when the dessert tray is presented because all the offerings look & taste so good.  Therefore bring more friends so you can taste more desserts.

I love that you can view the entire month's menu on the calendar on their website.  So if you have a favorite dish or want to try something new you know when to go.

After lunch, check out all the sweet treats.  They usually let you sample a few.  Andre's also offers sauces & savory items (quiche, etc...) in the refrigerator case by the door.

Service is decent.  I wish they were open Sundays.

Definitely check it out for lunch or dessert if you haven't yet.  They've been around for 50 years for a reason.

I've never had a better lunch in my life.

The food is simple and comfortable-- almost plain. The cooking and flavors are traditional and sure to please your mother (or grandmother) whom is still way too sophisticated for Waid's. If you want an adventure-- this isn't your place. This is a warm dining room next to a kitchen delivering nicely-prepared quiche, fish, salads, starch, and more.  oh...and the deserts are probably some of the best you'll find in the region (they come with your lunch).

The service is pretty average for any lunch dining room. Pretty unpolished, but endearing and friendly overall. I'm told many of the servers have been there for years if not decades (MANY regular customers as well). There's good reason.

The dining room can be described the same way as the food. It is plain, well- lit, airy and comfortable. I would almost say euro-folksy in its delivery. It is so pleasant and simple that you want to spend a few hours over tea, but really can't. You also want to eat more desert, but don't need it. Andre's leaves you wanting more.

I would drive out of my way to lunch at Andre's.

I couldnt agree more with Cyan's review.  The best chocolate I have found so far....

I also very much enjoy their lunches, complete with pastry dessert.
    Fabulous!

Closed on Sundays when I am often dreaming of them...

The best European dessert place in Kansas City. Amazing flavors and textures unlike any American desserts. It's a taste of another world. A must visit.

The chocolate here is soooo good and it makes you tingle all over after eating or drinking it.

I walked in intending to purchase a "few" truffles and walked out with a box full of them, some tea cookies, some random pastries and a huge jar of chocolate shavings to make hot cocoa with.

Andre's is dangerously good and puts most other chocolatiers to shame.

What a nice lunch date! Since I am moving away, I had a friend take me to lunch one last time. We went to Andres with her two year old son.

We both had the trout with rice pilaf and a salad. It was really good. Well cooked, fresh and very clean. i am not grossly full, but I feel good. The bread was fresh and warm.

At the end of our meal we were brought out a dessert platter and I chose the apple tart. It was tart and delicious.

All in all, I would say that this place is a fun dining experience. I would love to go back!

Chocolates were way too sweet and average tasting.  Christopher Elbow is a whole different league compared to Andre's.  Godiva from the mall actually tasted better. Expected a lot more from this place.

For me, Andre's chocolate is as good as it gets. Sorry to the uber-trendy set, but I think it's better than Elbow's. I've been buying chocolate from Andre's for about 15 years, with the bittersweet almonds at the top of my list, and that is not about to change. Ever. 5 stars for the choco side of Andre's.
A couple of weeks ago I tried the Tea Room with a friend. Lunch is a set price with beverage and dessert included. Score! The atmosphere is what I would imagine a small Swiss chalet-style cafe would be, but then I don't spend much time thinking about Switzerland... Anyway, the menu is planned a month in advance and includes 2 entrees per day, however Quiche Lorraine and cheese pie are served daily, as well. I had a pot pie kinda thing with a name I couldn't pronounce and now cannot even remember. Just know this, it was wrapped in puff pastry and Andre's puff pastry is the star of the Tea Room. Trust me, do not even attempt to go there if you count calories.
The dessert options are stellar, and your eyes will tear up with longing as you watch that tray being presented to the diners around you. When the tray finally comes your way, you might feel a bit woozy from the sight. Just relax and choose the Napoleon. It's one of the things you must try before you die. And when you do order the Napoleon, have coffee with it because Andre's coffee is excellent.
The service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is cozy and brimming with the over-50 ladies' auxiliary types, which is a good thing. Their polite conversation allows for a relaxing lunch without distraction. 4 stars for the Tea Room.
"But Anne," you might say, "you gave a great review to the Tea Room. Why only 4 stars?"
Well, a menu which makes me feel guilty just by looking at it loses a star. If they offered even 1 item for the calorie conscious diner I totally would've given it 5 stars. Still, it's a great option for those wishing to indulge.

When I think of the place, all I can think is "yum." The chocolates are delicious and everything you could possibly want in a dessert.

I had a variety of their desserts at my bridal shower and it was a huge success.
