I have been seeing Dr. Shahin for about 6 years now and am always very happy with her work. She takes the time to explain what procedures she is doing and her staff at the front desk and in the examination rooms are friendly. I am not a dentist but I feel like she does excellent work on my teeth. She makes me feel welcome and confortable whenever I am there for a visit. Once I had a chipped tooth and her office made a time available for me to come in immediately. I have recommended her to friends and will continue to do so. Dr. Shahin and her staff make going to the dentist something to look forward to.

There is a user below "Sandy J" who is right on the money.  I was going to say when I went for a cleaning it felt rushed -- EXTREMELY. they were busy and room wasn't private. If I'm remembering correctly it didn't have a door (or curtain).  I waited well beyond my scheduled time to be seen - then the cleaning itself probably took a good 10 minutes. No floss, just a feew pokes/prods with the little scraper thingy and a cleaning (which they called fluoride - i know the difference).  I needed to replace my dentists because I moved, but i guess I'll be making the drive since I know I had services then.  Again - i agree with "Sandy J" because when leaving I felt the goal was to get the insurance money with no regard to real service.  I hope I didn't have cavities.

I've been here twice. My first and my last time. I waited longer than I was actually seen by the hygentist and dentist. It was my first time there and they took no x-rays, no scaling, it was a joke. I wouldn't even take my dog here if I could. Anyone that review thia place more than 2 stars needs to get there brain checked. Please move this place to a 3rd world country.

I'm currently looking for a dentist that will fix the teeth that Dr. Shahin worked on.

Several times, I questioned the staff about whether I actually needed certain fillings done because I felt no pain. They were not patient or particularly kind and I got scolded that my teeth would get much worse if they weren't fixed. That was the last straw and I stopped going here after that. Strangely, I went from having no pain in several spots to now having regular tooth aches in areas that were worked on. My teeth have also become incredibly temperature sensitive.

Dr. Shahin would often work on me and another patient at the same time. She generally seemed hurried. Whenever I went for cleanings they would rush through the process. Overall I think the staff here are very careless and mostly focus on getting the maximum amount of money and thus do unnecessary work that is ultimately harmful.

Nope! Will never go here again. Actually I liked this dentist...that is until I received the statement from my insurance company.

I was charged $75 for 2 prescriptions. The dentist took no xrays..didn't even put a gown on me. Insurance was billed and my copay was supposed to be 0. So I go to the office with the statementf asking for my $$ back. They say no. So I call the insurance company. The receptionist whispers into my phone talking to the insurance co. I don't know what she's telling them. I get the phone back and the insurance co starts explaining...so I just asked outright, "Where does it say that I am to pay $75 for only a prescription without an exam?" The lady on the phone says, "Oh well she didn't tell me that. You will get your refund."

What was that all about? And why are you ripping patients off - for a measley $75 - just because we come to you desperate and in pain?

Yesterday my son and I went to get our teeth cleaned by Dr. Shahin and I was reminded once again why I love her so much.

She and all of her staff are so nice, friendly and polite, that it is almost unbelievable.  I don't think I have ever been in any kind of medical or dental office where everyone is so darn pleasant.  Is there something in the water there?

Andersonville Dental is an absolute boon for parents.  Not only is Dr. Shahin amazing with my 7 year old son when he is a patient in her chair, she is downright saintly with him while she cleans my teeth and he hovers about the room asking a zillion questions about the equipment, the model teeth, what she is doing to me, etc. etc.

She does great work and does her very best to get you in ASAP in an emergency.  I chipped one of my front top teeth this past Thanksgiving and was totally stressing and anxious about it.  I called her the very next morning, all but resolved to the idea that the office would be closed for the weekend and I would have to wait until Monday to get the nasty fixed.  Lo and behold, not only was she open, but she had me in and the tooth flawlessly fixed before lunch.  Wow.  Love her for that alone.

The prices are very reasonable, $75 for a cleaning, and she will do her best to work with you and keep costs down for more elaborate procedures if you need.  I also really appreciate the fact that she does the cleanings herself and does not have a hygienist do it.

I'm deducting one star because the office does have a tendency to get behind schedule and I have been left waiting an hour or so on more than one occasion.  I have learned to bring my own reading material and things to keep my son occupied.  As others have noted, it is also not the most lovely of places and at times almost seems a little dingy, but the equipment and people are always spotless.

I used to go to a *gorgeous* dental office on Michigan Ave. with views of the lake, but I would see the dentist for 30 seconds while the hygienist did everything, they acted like they were doing me a favor by seeing me and it took weeks to get an appointment.  No thanks, I love how Dr. Shahin knows my husband, son and I personally, remembers conversations we had from previous visits and calls us honey.  I actually like going to see Dr. Shahin.

    Update.

I had to lower my star rating.  I still like Dr. Shahin; she's still a very nice person but a filling she did last May just came out of my tooth.  At my desk.  While I'm not eating anything.  That's the second filling in a month that has just come out.

Dr. Shahin is fantastic. I have been going to her for years and could not be happier. She takes her time on patients and does a phenomenal job. I have been to many other dentists and she stands alone as the best I've been to. Every time I make an appointment, I'm in and out with no complication. She stays with you to answer any questions or concerns you have and is so patient. I would recommend her to anyone because when you go to a dentist/doctor you want them to make you feel comfortable and be gentle, exactly like Dr. Shahin. You can tell this woman loves her job and her patients, and to me that's important.

Anita is my favorite professional Anything.
I first came here 2 years ago when my last dentist moved out of state. Andersonville Dental was on my insurance... etc. The waiting room is really tiny and the rooms aren't as modern as my last dentist. I was hesitant at first but looks are deceiving.
This is the first time I have had a Dentist take the time and patience to fix problems that other Dentist's ignored.

While having work done, Anita constantly checks in and watches for signs of pain or discomfort. Then she FIXES whatever is causing the problem. She is not your typical Dentist. Seriously. I have recommended her to several people, who are now also very happy with her.
This is the first Dr. that I would pay out-of-pocket for if I had to. She is worth every penny.  I actually go to 6 month check-ups with her. If that says anything.

I was very pleased with Dr. Shahin, she is professional, thorough, quick and reasonably priced.  One thing I especially liked about her is that she went through my x-rays with me, showed me areas that she would be monitoring, and clearly explained what the x-rays were portraying.  Her staff was friendly, and responsive.  I would highly recommend her to anyone.

I went to see Dr. Shahin as a recommendation from a friend who went because of a friend. I was having serious root canal issues and needed a place that wouldnt kill my bank account.
My last dentist was great (Floss Dental Salon) but having no insurance made it difficult. So, I decided to try this place.
Everyone was so nice. Dr. Shahin was awesome! She was very professional and gave it to me straight. Not a lot of technical crap where I'm trying to decipher exactly what she means.
Also, I had to get a root canal done and was able to get it done there. The cost was right on and they are flexible with payments.
I also had to have an extraction done there and was pleased. About as pleased as you can be about losing a tooth.
I will continue going and will also keep recommending her to my friends who want good dental care from a caring staff for an affordable price.

I came here because of an odd tooth ache and because I couldn't remember the last time I had been to a dentist.  I called earlier in the day and they fit me in at 5:45pm the same day!  They took down all of my dental insurance info and all that stuff was ready to go when I came in.  They seated me pretty quickly, took my x-rays and then I waited.  Dr. Shahin seemed to be super busy, it was a Friday and during rush-hour, so I was understanding.  She finally came to me, looked at my x-rays and said I took care of my teeth.  Tooth ache: BAM, nailed the problem in five minutes, GRINDING.  She cleaned my teeth, explained to me the process of getting a night-guard and was super nice and gentle.  I was in and out in an hour!
I WILL BE BACK AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND COMING HERE!

The past couple years, I've much needed a dentist. After dealing with odd contraptions and a lot of pain in the past, I was hesitant to go back to the dentist. It's amazing how much experiences can change your feelings towards doctor visits.

Anita Shanin was absolutely delightful and her staff was sweet and attentive as well. She helped fix my cracked tooth and shaped it. Years of filing from cosmetic dentistry (electric and manually) have left my once-thick teeth weak and chipped. I didn't realize how something so simple as fixing my front teeth would encourage me to smile without hesitation.

I've since been getting a few cavities filled and next week some wisdom teeth pulled. The only negative aspect I've experienced is the first day waiting a little longer than I anticipated for my appointment, however this is something everyone has to deal with any time dentist/doctor appointments are involved.

If you desire someone who is willing to work with you to improve your mouth without feeling judged or impersonal, seek her out!

What everyone says is right on!  Dr. Shahin is a FANTASTIC dentist.  I just got different dental insurance and who would have thought of waiting periods for standard xrays, and other things... But I do!  Anyways, not yelping about my insurance! LOL

Dr. Shahin explained to me what to do to work around this.  She took the time to explain to me what needs to be done, etc.

Then the night before my Birthday, I broke part of my tooth off and I went in the first thing to get it fixed and they got me right in.  She saw how panicked I was, made me feel comfortable and then asked me if I ate yet.  I told her no, and actually my BF was making me a Birthday Breakfast. She told me to go eat and come back and enjoy my breakfast.  So I ate, came back an hour later and she fit me into her schedule like I was important or something.. I love it!

She won my heart over with her generosity and her passion to make her patients feel as comfortable as possible.

In the past couple years, I've been seen by two dentists and the usual handful of hygienists. Everyone in the office, including the receptionist, has a terrific attitude! The atmosphere is very professional, but in a positive "we want to help you take good care of yourself" way, not a creepy "let the professional take over" sort of way.
I also had my first (and I hope only) filling done here. It was a really positive experience, and I plan to continue coming to this office every six months.

Dr. Shahin is very sweet.  She's always mindful of her patient's comfort.  She and her staff work very swiftly.  They've always handled billing and insurance effectively.  The location is very clean.  Waits can get a little bit long, but not much worse than any other dentist or doctor I've visited.

For everything that I like about Andersonville Dental, both my wife and I have observed that the dental work in and of itself is not the best we've ever had.  In our experience, we've had smoother fillings and repairs with other dentists.  Its not bad, but just not spectacular.

I have been seeing Dr. Shahin for years and she is just wonderful! I first came to Andersonville dental after I was burned pretty bad by a downright scoundrel of a dentist. This ex-dentist told me that I had 7 cavities, gingivitis and that I needed to wear a mouth guard while I slept - all of which was estimated to cost me a whooping $4,000.00!
Well, I did not have four grand, so I went shopping for a second opinion. I told none of this to Dr. Shahin the first time I went to see her, I wanted to see what she said first. And guess what - I only had 1 cavity!!! 1!!! No mention of gingivitis or teeth grinding or anything?? I asked her about that and where are my other six cavities and she just laughed and said one filling was needed otherwise I had great dental hygiene.
I have been seeing her since, and have had zero cavities or dental problems (I do a really good job of taking care of my teeth though so a lot of credit to myself, yay me!).
She does do cleanings pretty fast, but I am grateful for that! And a yelper complained that she doesn't floss for you?? Hmmmm.....maybe you should floss your teeth for yourself once in a while, then maybe it wouldn't bother you so much!
Thanks Dr. Shahin, you are the best!

This place is all about speed dentistry. The only saving grace is that you can get an appointment and Dr. Shahin is a nice person.

During my initial appointment, she only took x-rays, saying that you have to come back for a cleaning at another appointment. I have been to multiple other dentists and have never had anyone tell me that the initial visit is for consultations only. This would have been fine if the receptionist had told me this when I set up the appointment asking for a cleaning.

After spending about 20 seconds looking at my xrays, Dr. Shahin told me I had 6 cavities. I know that I have sensitive teeth, but that sounded outrageous to me. I got a second opinion after that and found that I only had 2 cavities. I think that if Dr. Shahin had spent a little more time with me or my xrays she might have been able to better diagnose my teeth.

She did then do a basic brushing of my teeth, based on my continual requests, that left them feeling no better than when I brush my teeth myself.

I have new dental insurance so I had to find a new doctor so I made an appointment at Andersonville Dental.  I was able to get an evening appointment 2 weeks from when I called (could have been sooner but I was going to be out of town for a week).  My appointment was at 6:30 and I got in about 6:40ish and was out of there by 7:00.  When I would go to the dentist as a kid, there was always a hygienist that did the cleaning but the last 2 dentists I've gone to in Chicago, the dentist themselves have done the cleaning which I think makes the visit a little more personal.

    The good things:
    1. They're nice

    The bad things:
    1. They ran one HOUR behind schedule both times I had an appointment
    2. Dr. Shahin doesn't take time to polish the teeth well for a cleaning
    3. She doesn't floss people's teeth for a cleaning (What's a cleaning for, then?)

Being nice counts for a LOT, but it can't cover up for poor quality service.

Obviously, a lot of people like her, and that's cool. But I'm going to keep looking.

I'm pretty fanatical about my teeth but I haven't been to the dentist in like 10 months because I'm afraid I won't be able to find one in San Diego that I like as much as Dr. Anita.  I've sent a ton of friends to see her and I usually describe it as like having your favorite aunt work on your teeth.  She's super nice, extremely gentle, and while I'm sure she knows my name, always calls me honey.  My girlfriend is terrified of the dentist and would see Dr. Anita without hesitation.  If anyone knows someone like this in the Southern California area, please let me know.

Dr. Shahin is very responsive if something is uncomfortable or hurts.  The cleanings never take very long, maybe 10 minutes- yay!  She is very nice and I feel very comfortable with her.

My only gripe is that EVERY time I go in, they are behind schedule, like WAY behind.  Three other people in the waiting room, another person or two in the other chairs once I get into the dentist's chair.  I know now to bring a magazine into the back for the waiting room, because it's gonna be awhile.  If I work at 1pm, I know I can't make an appointment for later than 11am because I will be waiting so long that after the cleaning, there's no time for lunch, and I might not get to work on time!  They do have a good selection of magazines, though.  And the waiting room is warm and sunny.

I keep coming here anyway, and I make allowances because the Dr. is nice, her staff is nice, the office is clean, parking is easy.  I think she does a good job.  Though, if you use Tom's of Maine or something like that, you are gonna get a lecture....

Dr. Shahin is a GREAT dentist.  She's funny, and a nice lady too. I just had my first root canal, and it was virtually painless - hard to believe. When she gives you a shot of novocaine, she does it RIGHT, and your face doesn't end up looking deformed. She gets you in and out fairly quickly, not a lot of waiting.

The doctor has a the gift of magic! I had a very bad expierence at Dental Salon (Please feel free to read my review of that god awful expierence). They told me that I needed about 2,000 dollars of work done on my teeth. I went to Dr. Shahin for a second opinion. She took new xrays and said there was a 50/50 chance that I needed a root canal and crown. Dr. Shahin took her time to explain to me what the problem really was. Today someone was on my side b/c it turned out that I didn't need a root canal, just 2 fillings! Dr. Shahin was quick and the expierence wasn't painful at all! She is also a very friendly person who is no nonsense. She gets the job done. Yes, you might have to wait a little but you can tell that she hussles but takes her time with each patient. I think she is worth the wait. She saved me about 800 bucks today. Good job Dr. Shahin!

Just came back from here for 2 fillings. It went well. When one shot of novocaine wasn't enough, she easily gave me another shot. After that, the fillings went well and quickly. She was a bit busy, but I was still in and out within an hour. Dr. Shanin has great care with her patients, the office is clean, and the staff is friendly. I'm going back next week for more fillings on the other side of my mouth. My only complaint is I hate getting cavities!

I originally went to Dr. Shahin the first time about 4 years ago on recommendation of a friend. At the time, I hadn't been to a dentist in an embarrasingly LONG time, so in the beginning, I didn't have a whole lot of other dentists to compare to! That initial visit was great - Dr. Shahin has such a "mom" mentality, she's great at soothing you through something uncomfortable and gently chides you when you're doing things wrong. Through the last few years I had not gone (purely from my own stupidity), but I've recently been taking charge of my health, and my teeth has been one of my "action items". Dr. Shahin has been my partner in the whole thing. Fillings, a recent root canal, an upcoming crown, a referrel to get a bad tooth removed. All great treatment, all great service through it all.
Is her waiting room crowded? At times, yes.
But, when you sign in, take a glance at those people who are listed ahead of you - they usually say things like "broken tooth - emergency", or "toothache - emergency". Dr. Shahin's one flaw (if you can even call it that) is that she wants to make sure no one is in pain, so she tries to squeeze in as MANY people as she can in a day, and at times that even means some emergency visits.  A couple of times before *I* have been that emergency person, who was able to be squeezed in at the last minute, so I always keep that in mind when it takes an extra 10 minutes or so to get in there for my appointment.
In my opinion, I have never found the facilities there to be anything but clean and well presented. All items are handled with gloves and placed on a new, clean tray with each visit. The exam rooms are clean and well maintained. Do they look like they haven't been re-modeled in a few years? Sure, but who cares about decor when the facilities are clean and trustworthy?
I have a decent dental insurance provider, so luckily for me, the prices are always very reasonable, and the payment options are good too. If you don't have insurance, she will work out a payment schedule with you.
While I validate the claims of "pain" and "mistakes" from other Yelp-ers, I can say that I have never had that problem. In fact, during my recent root canal, she numbed 2 more times after the initial numbing, based on my claims of still feeling pain. I don't at all believe the other Yelp-ers are lying, it's just that their story puzzles me.

Try her for yourself - I can't by any means guarantee what kind of experience you'll have, but she is certainly worth giving it a try.

I went to this dentist based on the reviews here and that they were in my insurance network.  I thought this place was excellent.  Everyone was very friendly and helpful.  Although they seemed pretty busy, I didn't have to wait very long at all.  The place was very clean and professional.  Much cleaner and tecnologically up to date than the last two dentists I tried.  The dentist took the time to answer my questions after my check up and cleaning even though they were busy.

This probably the 5th dentist I've been to in the city and it was one of the best experiences I've had.  I don't understand the negative reviews of this office because they must be talking about some other place altogether.  Very clean, professional, thorough, modern equipment, very helpful and courteous.  It has been difficult finding a good dentist that also accepted my insurance, but I will definitely be going back here.

I don't even want to give this place ONE star, I'm VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED in the staff at this place....the staff here completely lack professionalism nor do they like to admit their own mistakes.

They sent my husband to collections for a claim that was not even his. This clinic made the mistake of putting my husband down as the patient instead of me and refused to change it until they were "paid CASH." They claimed that my husband was seen at their clinic, but even after speaking with their receptionist many times about how it was a mistake on their part and that I was the patient, they still refused to fix the problem.  They were RUDE, UN-COOPERATIVE, and UN-PROFESSIONAL!!!!!

I had to call my insurance numerous times to explain the situation and when my insurance intervened and called this clinic themself, andersonville dental staff were still extremely rude about a mistake THEY made... and said they refused to do anything until they were paid because waiting for an insurance claim to go through would take a month and they wanted their money now.

I was seen once in September of 2008 at this clinic and it is now February of 2009 and I am still dealing with this issue that was the mistake of this clinic.  All they had to do was resubmit the claim in the correct patients name and they refused to do it.

I almost gave in and was going to just go pay them cash and have my insurance reimburst me (as the receptionist demanded)... but honestly, I didn't see why I should have to pay them out of my pocket when I originally had insurance, but not just that, I didn't and STILL DONT see why I had to go out of my way to take care of a problem that they created. But I DID go out of my way by spending hours on the phone with my insurance and the collections office that they sent us to with absolutely NO HELP FROM ANDERSONVILLE DENTAL STAFF.

I called them numerous times to have their "billing department" call me back, but I never received a call back and he supposidly was never in the office. When I asked the receptionist for her name, she always refused to give it to me, but I remember her and she definitely remembers me.

Maybe that staff member that made the mistake was too afraid to get into trouble for the mistake she made, but her unprofessionalism and her not wanting to cooperate on a problem that was created by her, was completely appauling. It really made me feel that this clinic that claimed to be a nice neighborhood dental office is actually not what they think they are.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE - the headache and my phone bill for trying to straighten this out was never worth it - I should have never went here and I will never go here again and will forever tell everyone I know that ANDERSONVILLE DENTAL IS UNPROFESSIONAL AND A WASTE OF YOUR TIME!!!!! Don't be fooled by how "nice" you may think the dentist is.... It doesn't matter how "nice" she may be... her staff make this place NOT WORTH IT!

I have been going to Anita for over 10 years, and she is with out a doubt the most  thorough, kind and  conservative dentist you will find in the city.   You definitely will not find yourself a victim of un-needed xrays and costly proceedures. Dr. Shanin keeps your teeth healthy and intact with regular cleanings and exams. Her office and equipment are clean, and her employees are friendly and helpful. She takes most insurance plans. I   highly recommend  her to all my friends, and many have become regular patients.

Dr. Shahin is very, very kind and funny and makes the dental experience enjoyable. I even liked the very fast cleanings at first.

I would echo the other sentiments on here about getting real dental work done elsewhere.   I've now had to go back in three times to have some bonding re-done since it keeps chipping off.  Now, Dr. Shahin has not charged me for the repeat appointments, which is great, but it would be even more great to not have to keep going back.

Update on Andersonville Dental: the botched filling that Dr. Shahin gave me caused me to go to another dentist, who had to charge me more than 500 dollars to fix the problem, especially since the A-Ville Dental filling was dangerously near the nerve. I happen to know that these botched filling shenanigans have occurred with others too. Don't go to a dentist because s/he is nice and maternal, people! Go because s/he is a good dentist!

I'm not a fancy man. I have no dental insurance and just needed a basic cleaning and checkup after 3 o 4 years of winging it. This place was exactly what I was looking for. No nonsense. Quick in and out of the chair. Didn't try to push whitening or other procedures. And reasonable price for the uninsured.

I went to Dr. Anita on a friend's recommendation after not having a regular dentist for a number of years. I'd tried going to a couple of dentists a couple of years prior-one retired soon, the other recommended a LOT of expensive work(deep cleaning, a lot of other BS) I have a relative in Michigan who's a dentist, while I was visiting there,  she took a look, told me what I needed done-went to Dr. Anita shortly after, who told me precisely what my relative had said, NOT what the ripoff dentist had said. I've been going several years, very happy with her work- the cleanings are pretty fast, but overall very good work, nice to have a good honest dentist in the neighborhood!
