Fell in love with Winter Solstice at first sip! Entered it in my annual beer party and as expected, it won!!

Love all the varieties AV puts out! If I am ever in Booneville I WILL be making a visit!!

If you've been on a brewery tour then you've been on Anderson Valley's brewery tour. Super basic, there is hardly anything different or interesting about the beer they make other than the solar panels on the property. You probably already know that they have solar panels if you've open one of their beers anyways. Tour guide was friendly, but she didn't seem like she very much into it. We had this funny dog that followed us around too, making the tour a little more interesting.

The bar looked okay and we got some samples of beer. It was nice to see that they have some more adventurous beers on tap in addition to their other brews. I always like their versions of Amber Ale, Dubbel, Stout and their Cream Ale. But to see there Saison and there wet hopped beers was a nice treat. Hopefully they'll release them to their distributor so I can buy them in San Francisco soon.

The experience in a whole was an okay one. If you're out in Boonville check it out.

Top notch brewery for a couple of bright lighters like us.

We came to AVBC looking for a bahl horn but my friends don't have high pockets. It worked it well having a japer because the tap room is quite the tidrick. We didn't want to look like some back-dated chucks so we harped up some boontling with the bartender.

There were a couple of appleheads when we arrived, but when the bahlness left the kimmies arrived. Either way, good harping which may come off as blooching.

Be warned there is no chigrel, so bring your own sandwiches.

Ahhhh nothing better to cap off a great Thanksgiving vacation on the coast then going to a Brewery!

Saison- starts out somewhat promising and then it kicks you in the face with an aftertaste that is not happy making.  :-\

Boontlinger Weiss- not bad, but not entirely memorable. I can say that it's nice and mellow.

Summer & Winter Solstice- delicious, lightly spicy, and smooth! I'm creeping slowly into darker beers and I definitely had to take a 6-pack of the Winter home.  Drank one last night with leftover turkey.  Mmm, delish!

Oatmeal Stout- I am not a fan of dark beers, but the oatmeal stouts almost always get me with their rich, coffee flavors.  Very tasty!

The staff here is friendly, atmosphere is casual and laid back, and the decor/layout is relaxed.

    We dig it!

I love their beer!!!  I wish I could say the same thing about their brewery.  The mix of rude hipsters and weird hippie anarchists creates very unfriendly atmosphere.  I'll continue to buy their beer, but certainly won't be stopping by on my next trip to Mendo.

Drive up to bucolic Boonville to experience the anti-Napa (albeit just as beautiful). Driving through the Anderson Valley still feels like going back in time - this place has certainly started to move upscale (it had to happen sooner or later), but you won't spot a black limo of rosé-drunk bachelorettes anywhere in sight. This valley still feels genuine and true to its agricultural mission of producing quality wine and beer, and it does just that.

The Anderson Valley Brewing Co. produces ten delicious beers (my favorite is the Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout), features affordable brewery tours and tastings (check out the enormous copper brew kettles), and has its own outdoor biergarten. Few things can beat sitting out in the California sunshine, dabbling in a selection of quality microbrews. I've visited three times - the place was never crowded, but always a great time.

The beer was delicious and the facility was cool. I really liked the seasonal beers--the summer solstice tasted like a creamy dream. There is a disk golf course on premises which took me back to my college days for a second. The tasting glasses are huge--5oz but it also comes at a cost. This was probably the most expensive brewery we visited on the tour.

Some of the staff seems to need a reminder that being snarky/aloof to customers is a quick way to lose business. Also judging a customer's purchases while they are making them is downright bizarre--especially in this economy. The two women that helped us at first were nice enough but the girl who came back from giving tours was downright rude. She seemed to be too pre-occupied chatting it up with some dudes and talking about handing out her employee discount to them to give us any attention--annoying. If it weren't for her I would have given this place 5 stars.

The brewery seems to be going corporate, the horses are gone, but still a great place.  There are a number of great beers.

We like the Summer Solstice best.  I have always had beer on tap or in a bottle.  However, they had  Summer Solstice in a can which I found superior to the bottle.  The bar person stated this was because there was no air and the can is coated so there is no tin flavor. Regret I did not buy more as I will need to try again.

Very friendly with plenty of room and tables for a picnic.  The tour of the brewery is interesting.

You can buy a beer shirts (there trade mark is a beer that is a combination of a BEar and a deER) haha.  Also some books on the interesting Boonville language and history

Fantastic brewery, and worth the "should we, shouldn't we?" debate.  Long time fans of the beer, my boyfriend and I stopped on our drive back to the Bay.  A cool day, so we figured the dog would be OK for a few minutes in the car....and then we found out the dog can come into the tasting room.  Awesome.  The beer was tasty as always, and it was everything a tap/tasting room should be---lots of room, a beer garden, and a mixture of local and out of towners, none pretentious, and a bartender who knows her stuff.

Driving north on Highway 128 that stormy Monday morning, I recalled something I had read on http://avbc.com prior to making the journey up to Boonville: "There are no straight, easy roads into or out of Anderson Valley.  They are all twisty, and narrow, and often wind through forests or along mountain ridges."

    They weren't lying.

The drive up to Anderson Valley from San Francisco via Highway 101 is worth the trip in itself. You feel as if you've been transported back to a simpler time, before terms like 'urban sprawl' and 'global warming' existed.

However, once you reach the point where 128 meets 253, setting your eyes upon Barkley, the Legendary Boonville Beer, will rattle you back into reality. A reality where you are about to sample some of the most phenomenal craft beers on the planet.

We arrived at Anderson Valley at about 1:00 PM, in the midst of an unrelenting hailstorm that pelted you like BB's from your childhood neighbor's toy rifle, if said gun had been an automatic. We ran to the shelter of the tasting room, where we were warmly welcomed by the resident canine, an affectionate black Lab who spent the rest of our visit curled up at the foot of our barstools.

We bellied up to the copper bar, and promptly ordered a sampler tray of every beer they had available for tasting. Our waitress was quick and friendly, and proceeded to give us the rundown of the bounty she had placed before us.

This is where I stop to tell you that Anderson Valley definitely knows their stuff. Every single beer we tried was more impressive than the last, and some we had to try twice (since going on the tour allots you four more samples).

Barkley's Sour Horn Barleywine was our personal favorite, we ended up taking a growler of that and Brother David's Triple Abbey Style Ale (for those of you keeping score, those are 9% and 10% ABV, respectively) onto Idaho, where our journey was headed. When we tapped them once we arrived, you'd think we'd brought our friends manna from heaven by the way they looked once it hit their lips.

Even the High Roller's Wheat was good, and this is coming from people who are not big fans of wheat beers. What makes High Roller's different is that it's not swampy-looking like most wheat beers, and the crisp tangy taste stays with you just long enough for you to want to take another sip.

Unfortunately, we visited at a time when neither the Winter or Summer Solstice beers were on tap, the Winter Solstice being a personal favorite. They made up for it by bowling me over with the Deep Enders Dark Porter, a rich chocolaty beer with hints of coffee, which is, as they say in Boontling 'not just shy sluggin' gorms neemer' (not just for breakfast anymore).

THis review is a tad long winded, But after experiencing the Legendary Boonville Beer Fest, (usually the second weekend in May at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds), where we witnessed the most epic kickball game EVER, but also sampled some of the greatest craft beer the nation has to offer, and wicked jalapeno poppers at the mini market.

As of 2011, camping for two from Fri-Sun was $28, so bring your tent/sleeping bag/good vibes and join the party crew to the very top and furthest left camp, they are 24-hour party people. It is definitely an experience.

Wow - A full disc golf course at a brewery? filled w/ goats and hop vines.

This place is beautiful. I had some insanely good bourbon-barrel-aged, sour, stout. What?!?! are you kidding? it was the last of the keg.

Got a growler of the winter-solstice. If you have had the summer, you will LOVE the winter. imo - it's much better than anything else they have there.

    Pretty cool gift shop also.

We got here a bit late, and luckily someone there let us park outside and have the course all to ourself and them, and maybe a beer or two :).

Solid place...... Really enjoyed our experience here... Loved the surrounding area... The tasting room was great..

We tried the taster.. Got 13 beers, 5 ounces each. I think it was about 20 bucks.....

They have plenty of options to take beer home as well.

The one negative was that they don't have food. I get it is a tasting room. That isn't even a big deal.

We would go back again for sure.

    Dear Anderson Valley,

Even though I have never made it to the brewery itself, your beer is my favorite of all time. Hands-freakin-down. Brother David's Tripel and Oatmeal Stout: if you were human, we'd be married. Or at least having a serious, serious long-term love affair. Thank GOODNESS I can buy you at the local Total Wine, otherwise I'd be located somewhere near Boonville at this time. Here's hoping that we may meet very soon, so that I may partake of your delicious offerings and leave with unsteady footing.

    Much love and well wishes,

We stopped in at AVBC for a brewery tour and taproom visit on our way to Mendocino for the weekend.

We were the only people on the tour, and while the girl giving it seemed sort of disinterested and awkward at first, she warmed by the time we were done. The tour was more novel than educational, but it was cool to see the bottling/canning lines and stick your head inside a big bin of hop flowers.

Drinking lots of little 5 oz. tasting glasses was fun. The pricing in the taproom was comparable to bar pricing ($5 a pint), which I thought was a little steep for a brewery. It's nice to be able to drink obscure things on tap, though -- the Summer Solstice cream ale tastes like a beery cream soda (so delicious!!) and the Brother David's Triple and Imperial IPA were also really good.

The outdoor beer garden is the highlight of this place on a sunny day -- we could have spent the afternoon there. If it weren't such a drive from San Francisco, we'd be drinking here far more often.

Complementary peanuts to munch on but no food, so bring your own munchies! Lots of interesting and chatty locals hanging at the bar, as well as friendly dogs and a cat! The tasting room and beer garden are both huge and could easily accommodate a big group of people.

Definitely worth a stop if you're in Mendocino County!

A definite must if your driving through.Great beer, and nice little picnic area. We make a pilgrimage annually.

I would have given 4 stars except this time the service was weird. Not friendly, no smiles, not very knowledgeable on the beers. I asked about a beer name and was told " not sure, uh we can't keep up with all the names..." Ummm, ok

Whatever, beer is good, and the grounds are cool.

I have liked Anderson Valley beers for a while and finally got a chance to visit the brewery yesterday. Their Amber and Oatmeal Stout is always a solid bet.

I was surprised with how many beers and different styles they brew. We got the sampler of everything, which we thought was 12....then 7 or 8 more were added. Favorites were Boont ESB, Winter Solstice, Double Abby, and Grand Cru.Oatmeal Stout takes the show though!

Tasting room is huge with a store, fridges with beer to go and lots of room at the bar and tables.

Can't wait for the Beer Festival!

    6 stars.
The beer is good, the tasting room is good, the outdoor seating is good, the whole darn place is good.  We did the big tasting, i think it was 15 tastes.  I liked a lot of the beers.  My favorites were the summer and winter solstice, the stout and one of the wheat-ish beers (filtered).  I'm not a big IPA fan but that's not really their fault and the double and tripple were good but a bit sweet for me.  The tasting room is big and open, very spacious.  They also have an outdoor area which is dog friendly and a pretty nice place to taste or drink beef on a nice day.  We also went up the road to get sandwiches and then back to the brewery to eat at one of their picnic tables, it was pretty cool.

I'd definitely recommend a stop here for anyone who likes beer, or beer type stuff, or knows what beer is or would like to try beer or likes brewery type places or knows someone who likes beer or has even seen beer..... you get the idea.

Next time a tour might be in order.

The day we went there were 17 beers on draft... with 5 oz "tastes" it would have been impossible for the 2 of us to try them all (since we did need to drive back to SF). Plenty of options for all. I've been to a few breweries where they really focus on one type of beer so if you don't like, say, belgian-style or IPAs, you're out of luck. Not the case at Anderson Valley.

I will say that of all the various types of tastings I've been to... wine, liquor, beer... this was one of the least enthusiastic bartenders I've ever had. If you do go, don't expect enthusiasm just good beer.

Stopped in here on the way back from Mendocino. Great place! Their tasting room is open and spacious, located just opposite the brew house. You can see the big copper kettles through large windows!

In the tasting room they've got all the Boont beers available, along with some special ones that never get bottled. You should drink those! The staff were all super-friendly, and I really dug that while I was there a guy from the brew house came in, boots still on, and had a pint. That's awesome.

Laid back vibe, beer, and the beautiful Anderson Valley. Oh yeah! They also have a disc golf course! And they sell discs, too!

Maybe we were there on an off day?  The sampler was good - tons of options so we could get a feel for what they had to offer.  The tap room was bright and airy.  There was an unused beer garden outside.  Our beer was tasty, although not as good as North Coast's offerings in my opinion.

What we didn't get was any kind of service.  The bartenders seemed completely absent of personality - almost like they didn't even want to be there.  It's a little strange, considering how many breweries we've been to, to have our "hosts" be so inhospitable.

We'll definitely give them another shot next time we're in town, in the hopes that they'll have some more engaging staff when we visit.

Once I heard that this place offers tasty beer and disc golf, I knew I had to check it out. My friends and I showed up on a Saturday afternoon, grabbed some beers and some disc golf tickets and started playing. They have a large piece of land with 18 disc golf holes. The course was beginner-friendly. Many holes were straight with few obstructions. As a somewhat seasoned player, I was a bit disappointed by the easier course layout. Nevertheless, it was a fun round with some challenges.

After playing, we went inside and drank some beers. I liked what I drank. My main gripe was with the service: it was extremely slooooow. Overall, a solid stop if you're in the area, I'll be back!

Long a fan of Boont Amber, I stopped by its birthplace this past weekend en route to a few wineries in Philo.  It was a quiet and slow - probably something to do with the fact that it was Monday, albeit a holiday weekend Monday.  There were lots of tables, which indicated that it probably gets pretty crowded at times.

I'm not an experienced beer-taster but I appreciated the set-up:  they had 12 beers available for tasting at different prices (5 for 8 bucks, 12 for $15 - something like that).  The boyfriend and I shared a 6-beer sampler, which included a wheat beer, a pale ale, an IPA, a bitter ale, and 2 abbey/belgian style beers.  We had our favorites (ESB for me, Double Abbey for him) but all were worth drinking.  Totally fun and totally worth it.

High points, aside from the delicious beer -
    1) I personally like paying for tasting if it means no intense pressure to buy (or bad attitude if you don't).  We bought some beer but not under duress.

    2) Nice staff - not all in your face, but friendly and happy to answer questions.  Totally unpretentious.

    3) Dog-friendly!  Lots of cute lil woofers coming in and out that door.

    Low point -
I don't need super high style/architectural award-winning facilities to drink beer, but the place was REAL short on ambiance.  Like glaring white linoleum floors, sort of awkward configuration, and overall kind of cavernous and retail-spacey.  Although there were certainly people there at the bar, drinking pints and making a long afternoon of it, I can't imagine getting particularly comfy there.  To be fair, we didn't hit up the patio, which is likely a bit more welcoming.

Might well be my favorite business in all of Mendocino.

Anderson Valley makes Exceptionally good beer.  The current location is a pretty little spot with some nice trees.  The beer garden has tables and picnic tables, shade trees for hot days and covered areas for rainy days.

Dogs are allowed in the beer garden and in the bar.  Boudicca and Jules Verne love hanging out there.

The people who work at Anderson Valley are a large part of why this is an especially nice place to pass a few hours- bright, mellow, friendly, welcoming, interesting people.

If you are driving on 101, it is worth the detour to Boonville to stop by Anderson Valley Brewing!

It was pouring on our way up to Mendocino on Hwy 128 so we stopped off for a break to check out one of our favorite beer's brewery spots.  Inside the tasting room, you will see the raised bar with cowboy-style bar stools.  The room smells of delicious hops and wheat.  The Boont Amber Ale is one of my favs, but I tried one of the limited editions for kicks.  I was not disappointed!

My dog even enjoyed this spot because she was able to come inside.  They are dog friendly :)

You can buy some apparel (kind of overpriced), and look at some good local publications while grubbing on some trail mix and chips.  There is nothing else to eat, so don't come hungry.  I can't wait to go back for the May 8th festival!

Worth the trek up to Boonville! Not only is their beer fabulous but hey- did you know? They have frisbee golf here! So much fun! You pay a nominal fee for 18 holes of "disk golf" (I think it was like $5), grab a 6pack and head out! A great weekend excursion for someone looking for something cheap and easy to do! Bring your own food and if you want your dog and take a few hours to play. Everyone here was super nice, they are very laid back and just let you roam around the land playing. "Consistently judged one of the worlds finest brewires"
Boont Amber Ale is the perfect example of the classic California amber ale. A perfect balance of hops and barley,5.8% abv.
The original brew pub is now a bar/restaurant since they moved to a larger building to improve production. So it's not quite the destination it once was but the brewerie does give tours and the quality of beer is just as good ( Unlike Mendocino Brewing Company ).
Poleeko Gold Pale Ale,Barny Flats Oatmeal Stout, and all their beers are world class.
They write stuff on the inside of the bottle caps and their mascot is a bear with antlers. Bear + Deer = Beer.

Truly a must-stop if you're in the area.  The beer is outstanding, they're solar powered (maybe not carbon neutral, but check out this solar array: http://www.avbc.com/ne... ) and the prices are reasonable here.  You get a logo glass as a keepsake too.  I had one that broke a few years ago, and it's always fun drinking out of a glass that has a bear on it.  Even if it's an antlered bear, which always struck me as a little odd.

I had the Deep Enders Dark Porter, and I don't think I've seen a porter from AVBC before, but it was good.  I wish we had more time and more tolerance to stay here longer, but as our anderson valley excursion was coming to a close and we had already had our fill of wine, one beer was all we could reasonably stay for.

    Two visits to AVBC.

First visit, the tasting room was closed. I was crushed, I was gutted, and I was cranky - until I wandered into the office, was bestowed with oodles of swag, and a few beers with the employees for my trouble.

Second visit, the tasting room was open. I got absolutely ratarsed. The counter may have been sticky - probably my own fault. As Marlene said, the place smelled of beer.

Probably 'cause it's a feckin' brewery.

Not a lounge, it's not a restaurant. it's a brewery, with a room you can go to, so you can sample their beers. (Honestly, some people on here hit their heads at an early age. What can I say?)

The beer? Don't get me started. Boont Amber is an excellent standby. Hop Ottin' is most tasty. Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is creamy and happiness-inducing. But the Summer and Winter Solstice beers are absolutely outrageous.

All of this (*makes sweeping arm gestures to the above*) in one of the most beautiful spots on earth. Anderson Valley.

Disc golf & Beer.  What else is there to say??

Well, there is more.  Found this hidden treasure in the hills between Ukiah and the Pacific Ocean.  There was a lot of nothing out there, but then you come up to the AVBC, and its big gates, field of hops, and brewery, and you know you're in for a treat.

But as I said before, they have disc golf!!  Beer and disc golf go hand in hand, but this is the first time I've seen the pair coupled together.  I was only here for a quick sip, so I didn't get to play a round (but I did pick up a fluorescent yellow AVBC putter).

As for the brews, I had a sip of the Brother David's Triple Abbey Style Ale (wow!  potent stuff), and a pint of the Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema (nice summer brew), and I was definitely down.

Now this brewery does not serve food, so be prepared for that.  Luckily we had some picnic fixin's so we made some sandwiches at our table, and were in heaven.

This hidden brewery is off the beaten path, but you will be rewarded, my friend.

We came to Mendocino County to wine taste...

After lunch in Mendo, we cruise through the Redwoods to Anderson Valley. After five or six wineries, we came into Boonville.

"Holy shit... do you see that?!?" I ask my companions.

In front of us stands a large Anderson Valley Brewing Company sign that reads: BEER TASTING

This was an unexpected surprise. We jump out of the car and head into not just a tasting room, but a full blown pub! Complete with peanuts.

We get two sample trays and taste all the brew AVBC makes, served by the lively, gray-haired beer maiden (classic!). Then I order myself a pint of the Cervesa Crema Summer Solstice Ale, (AVBC's seasonal brew which has replaced Shinerbock as my favorite beer of all time - a monumental achievement!) I would have ordered another pint, but I was dragged out of the pub by my starving companions.

We came to wine taste... and left with three cases of Summer Solstice Ale.

What can I say? I'm a beer girl.

A rarity for a microbrewery - it's a factory, not a brewpub.  The sales / tasting room is a huge industrial barnlike thing, bright, with a beer garden and view of nearby mountains, next to a field of goats.

Tasting prices are reasonable but what sets it apart is the beer, one of the better small breweries in California and this stuff is seriously better on tap than in the bottle.

Other than just being eccentric and collecting knickknacks and chainsaw-carved redwood bears like all other beer people, they seem to specialize in Frisbee golf - they have quite a selection of discs for sale.

    PUPPIES AND BEER?!

    Died of the cuteness so.many.times.

Anderson Valley Brewing Co. doesn't serve food. You should know that right off the bat. And if you're going, you should totally do the laid-back tour for $5, because it includes 2 free tastings. The other thing you should know is that their Summer Soltice beer is cool, creamy goodness. And finally, you should know that UNFORTUNATELY, the 8-week old puppies (Flex and Knuckles) will probably not be tiny, wiggly, melt-your-heart 8-week-old puppies forever. So, you should go right.now.

Seemed like a cool place to hang out. But the beer isn't any cheaper nor did it taste any different. So if drinking at the brewery is just drinking at the brewery then why drive 2 hrs to get there ?
    I did think I spied a horseshoe pit !!!

We'd done tastings at Brutocao down the road before coming here, followed by a sampler pack here. They put the beers on a beer map, so you know which one you're currently tasting. Great idea. We're sitting there chatting to 2 people from San Jose, and one of their friends manages to find the owner of the place, Ken. She said we'd missed the 4pm tour, and her husband was a home-brewer, blah, blah. She talked him into giving everyone a tour of his brewery. It's like getting a tour from Willy Wonker himself. The copper vats looked just so beautiful. The copper control board is mostly show, and they have a new Allen Bradley PLC computer to run the show. No glass elevator, but there is a $1mill solar panel set covering one roof, so you can drink even more guilt free.

Put this on your "must see before I die" list.

We've bought Anderson Valley Beer before so we decided to check out their tasting room on the way up the Mendo for a long weekend.  We felt like intruders in the tasting room.  The servers and other patrons seemed very disinterested with the fact we were there and carried on as if we were invisible.  Not the most welcoming environment but you can't deny the quality of their beer.

We split the 8 taster sampler and it was plenty of beer for both of us.  Good thing they weren't stingy with the pretzels.  The Cerveza Crema was by far my favorite, rich and creamy, I felt like I was drinking dessert.  We bought a six pack at the tasting room and it was just as good but when we picked some up at BevMo a couple weeks later, it just wasn't the same.  Guess there's something to be said for picking it up at the source.  A definite stop on your way up to Mendocino.

Great beers, but tasting room is a bit stale.

Did i mention great beers?  You can get a sampler of 6, 8.. 12 different beers, for about $2/beer .. all delishous.

If you're going up the coast, drive thru anderson valley and stop here.

Also stop at the anderson valley wineries - they make good Pinot's.
