I really like this place! The Chicken BBQ sandwich is great. The ladies (and a guy, I believe?) who work there are really nice. I remember when I first tried the Chicken BBQ sandwich, the cashier lady gave me extra napkins cause she said "you'll need it!" She's so nice.

The only one reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is they're a bit slow... They're possibly understaffed or something. Other than that, everything is amazing.

I like this place.  I do.  They were a bit slower previously with some of the sandwich types but this has picked up considerably.  Irregardless, the "fare" has always been tasty.  Nothing really fancy but all with good flavor.  My personal favorite though, isn't the sandwich.

IT'S THAT FREAKING JALAPENO ROLL!!!  OMG.  Hot, cold, whatever.  Gimme-gimme.  I heard they used to put LESS Jalapeno mix before.  May they never go back (like feudalism)!  It is a good-sized roll, even for a sizeable appetite like mine.  The Jalapeno mix is in no way too creamy.  Jalapeno is what you expect and what you get.  Must be very fresh as well, considering the spice/heat level.  Nice.

I have to remember though, that their simple-sounding sandwiches are just that, despite the same price point as the others.  Turkey-swiss-avocado equals just that plus 1 piece of lettuce.  Still good, though and doesn't dissuade my plan of working through the menu.  I do have to admit a certain reticence at paying $6.75 for a BLT but i'll probably do it at least once...sometime.

I love going to this place. In fact that I have gone there for the past two days in a row. I really like that the food is simple and I can order a sandwich without requesting them to omit anything. The staff are always nice and friendly. So much so that yesterday when the annoying lady came in they remained calm and composed. I usually just go in there and get the turkey and swish with whatever sparkling beverage that they have that is not a COKE.  I wouldn't say that they are slow or anything or maybe I have been going at the right times.

Wow, didn't know there were so many Andersen Bakery locations. I found this one on Market because of a sign advertising the Farmer's Chicken Salad sandwich, so I decided to inside and get one. It was just okay, too much bean sprouts and not enough chicken salad. It was light. The bread options are interesting and good. I wonder if I'll make it back.

I knew I forgot a lunch place from my try-a-new-place-every-day experiment. Last week a different coworker took us to one of his go-to breakfast places, Andersen. He was raving about the cheese danish and after tasting a sample on the counter, I totally get it!

Unfortunately, my tuna sandwich could not compare. Tuna? What tuna? Oh, you meant my mayo sandwich? Clearly that is not a strong point for them. Similar reports for the roast beef and turkey as well.

The pastries and bread are really good, but lunch is not their thing.

I enjoyed an absolutely excellent sesame bagel here during my weekend in SF. I've never had a bagel with the same taste and texture, a bit lighter and more flavorful than the usual bagel joint. Toasted with some cream cheese and tomato and it makes for perfect start for a day.

The ham and cheese croissant is OK. It might have been better had it been served warm.

Lunch is Downtown San Francisco can be really hit or miss, it seems, but after seeing the sign for the pick two special in front of the door of this place, I had to give it a try.

My first visit I ordered the half vegetarian sandwich (the one with avocado) with the fruit salad. The sandwich was good, especially the bread. I had it on a French roll, and I did like that they will put it on whatever bread you want. The fruit salad, though, was amazing. My coworker ordered the same except with a different sandwich, and we were both in awe. The greens were fresh, and the fruit, especially the strawberries, were amazing. It was pretty much a flavor explosion, with a citrusy-ginger vinaigrette on the side. I also at one point tasted fresh basil! Delish!

My second visit didn't have as happy an ending. This time I went all out and ordered the full-sized fruit salad. I was craving it after having it once, actually! Having to wait 20 minutes for it did not make me happy, though, so I think I would definitely call it in next time. I don't know if the people were flustered because I was waiting, but it just didn't seem as fabulous as it did the first time around. No strawberries. No basil. And the same amount of dressing they gave me for the half salad. Really? It was enough for me, but it did give me pause.

The fresh bread always looks so delightful. One day I will splurge on a half loaf of something fresh baked.

The pastries also always tempt me. I think at one point I will try them out in the morning, and also their coffee. There always seem to be plenty of people stopping in at that time; I see them as I am coming from the BART station. If the pastries are as good as the ones at Specialty's, and if they have better coffee, I will definitely go here more often, so I'll have to see.

The staff is always friendly, and the place seems pretty clean.

The Verdict: This is more like a Three-and-a-Half, but I do like this place. I will be back.

My company ordered pastries and fruit with their catering services from this location for a mother's day event.

I was treated with great respect and great customer service from placing the order on the phone to the day I picked it up!

I tried quite a few of their pastries and OMG are they delicious! I'm pretty sure I gained some weight from eating a good amount of these all in one day HAHAH

Nice fresh fruit platters as well, can't go wrong with fruit, as long as it isn't old, and theirs is nice and fresh.

If allowed to for future meetings at work, I will use their catering again!

I come here for breakfast at least 2-3 times a week, breakfast pannini on focaccia with light cheese, comes out to around 4 something, not a bad deal at all. They use real eggs which is a huge plus for me and the bread is really good!

I also get their half soup+ bread deal sometimes, clam chowder is really good but a bit small even for a "half" their onion and cheese bagel dipped in clam chowder is BOMBBBBBBBBBBBB though, i would totally get it more often if it wasn't so small!!

Most of the employees here are really nice except that one guy who works every morning.. he's not mean but he's just like -_____________- all the time. wake up son!, he doesn't try to greet you or anything, just waits for you to walk up and order, i think i've ordered multiple times without having a single word exchanged between the both of us lol.

Stopped in here for a quick bite to eat for breakfast.  Was surprised how terrible the food was.  Doesn't quite deserve 1 star, since the staff was friendly and place was clean, but I'd give 1 star for the food.

Croissant was dry and thrown away half eaten.  Coffee was VERY burnt.  I drank about a quarter of that before throwing it away as well.  I also had a cheese bread thing, which was okay, but extremely oily.  This was also only half eaten before I tossed it.

Andersen/Grain D'or or whatever it's called has never looked all that enticing, but I was hungry for a small snack and they sell baked goods.   With my mind still stuck on the drool-inducing morning buns from Tartine, I immediately went for the "morning bun".  But just as it looked kinda small and sad, its taste is sorta lacking too.  I am sure it was fresh since it's sold in a bakery, but it wasn't particularly buttery or flaky or chewy.  It wasn't much different from eating semi-stale bread.

The upside?  It was only $1.50.  So can I really complain?

    1.  Review of carryout lunch.

    2.  Service was fast and friendly.  Even though it was right at noon, it  was not very busy.

    3.  Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich - This was not a very good sandwich.  I am not sure why they chose roasted red peppers instead of something  like tomatoes and basil.  It just didn't work for me.  The bread was also a little soggy.  The ham and cheese itself was nothing special.  There are so many great sandwich places around.  There sandwich just doesn't stand up to these.

    http://tinyurl.com/3sq...

    4.  Clam Chowder -  Just a basic chowder.  Not much different from what I would get from a can and warm up at home.

    5.   The lunch was neatly packed.  It took considerably less than my target of 15 minutes to order and receive my food.

    6.  Considering the quality, I thought it was slightly over-priced.   The cost was $12.32 for a sandwich and soup without a beverage.  There are much better $12 sandwich lunches around the area.

    7.  Overall, there is simply not a compelling reason to return.

Damn this place is overpriced for the small ass pastries.
    The lines are long.
Too many counter people standing around when there's only one cashier working.
    I think that's mighty lame.
But not as lame as the apple caramel muffin I had with ONE piece of apple in it.

Came her after walking aimlessly through the Financial district on a Sunday morning.  Funny thing is that I knew everything was closed, but I still walked the streets trying to find something that was open.

This place had a long line, and that may have been due to the three employees trying to handle everything, as well as the family in front that took five minutes to order from the menu.  Really, five minutes?  I timed you guys too.  Ordered the breakfast Panini, since that was the only breakfast item on the menu.  Good thing it was good.  The blueberry muffin was very good as well.  I wanted soup too, and had a the chicken tortilla soup.  It was very good, although it was missing the little chips on top.  It was a good, quick breakfast, albeit on an almost non-existing breakfast menu.

Grain D'or makes one meannnnn sandwich & they deserve BIG bonus points for being open late & somewhat affordable amidst the tourist trap that IS Union Square

After walking around the Barbary Coast Trail for hours & hours, we were cold, tired & hungry

Given it was also 3 PM on a Saturday, there was *nothing* open in FiDi, so we saunter back over towards Union Square & Grain D'Or was the 1st stop we spotted w/ an open door

Yay - they're open until 6 PM on Saturdays so we happily (albeit weakly) walk in & order some yummy sandwiches

Salami & Roasted Tomatoes for my London friend on a toasty Cibatta - she said the filling to bread ratio was just right & even without chips, she was filled & re-energized

Veggie for me & I was likewise satiated - although still cold

We didn't see any options for hot drinks like coffee or tea which was weird.....but then again, we were so tired, we may have overlooked

There is a cafeteria-style feel to the place - very open w/ basic wooden tables & chairs - so we didn't really get the feel that this was a comfy, cozy spot to relax & warm up

But w/ sandwiches this good, we'd definitely consider coming back..... reading others' reviews about their scrumptious bagels & my next trip is already in the works

Remember the first day of school when you were a little kid?

You knew your mom or dad was gonna wake you up at a certain time, but you were so excited to wake up and go to school that you kept waking up every 10 minutes in anticipation?

Well, today was kinda like that for me and although I have called Yelp my happy workplace for almost 2 years now, today was the first day that I joined my SF peeps in a 5 day a week office setting.

And so to kick off my first day, my friend Michael E and I went to Walgreen's with our friend Jessica to buy Muni passes (dude, I'm taking public transportation now?!!?) and then decided to stop in here for a sammich. The grilled ham and brie immediately caught my eye and once it arrived it was no joke. This thing is huge, so come hungry.

As for how it tasted, I thought it was quite good. I would however say pass on the lettuce or ask for it on the side, because there are few things grosser (to me anyways) than hot wilting lettuce, blegh. But the ham and brie was deelish and the sourdough was a stellar choice for the bread. I foresee this being a regular lunch spot for me :) Good stuff!

I'm eating the best BLT sandwich right now.  It's simply Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato & mayo on plain white bread... mmmm.  I didn't get this from Grain D'or Bakery.  Why? Because after eating a sad attempt of a BLT from there I was forced to come home and make my own.

If the 'B' in BLT stood for Bread then the BLT I had from there on Pain De Champagne would have been awesome.  But the 'B' stands for Bacon... so if your idea of bacon on a BLT is burnt bit of bacon then by all means get a BLT at Grain D'or Bakery.  As for me, I'll pass.

Ladies and gents: I present to you the grown up Twinkie.

All together now (chant): CREA-MY FRENCH! CREA-MY FRENCH!

This is the main reason I'd return... again and again and again. Oh any by the way, I think that the CREA-MY FRENCH blows away any of the Beard Papa poofy puffs on any given day. Fresh french baguette with a creamy filling inside - sweet but not custardy. It's more like the cream filling you find in Japanese cream pans.

    Dessert first. Always.

It's also a solid lunch hour spot. My turkey, avocado and swiss was pretty darn tasty.  When I dropped in, the place was relatively busy, so I am guessing that others would agree.

    PESTO BREAD
    PISANO BREAD

Get it for $3.25. It has a good amount of cheese and sauce (pesto or marinara) on it. I love it. Get it sliced but watch out for the workers -- sometimes they don't give you the ends thinking that you don't want it. But why wouldn't any bread lover want the ends of a loaf??

I haven't ordered anything else from here but I am in love with their pesto bread and pisano bread.

PS. Does anyone know if Grain D'or Bakery is the same as Anderson Bakery? I think they're the same since they sell the same things and the setup is the same. But if they're the same, why do they go by two names...?

This is one of my stops for a cheap lunch. I don't come here often, but I've never had any issues. The bread and pastries are good quality, there's plenty of tables to seat, it's clean, and service is nice. Nothing fancy, simple foods, no complaints.

This was a different bakery (can't remember the original name) many years ago before becoming Grain D'or, which was later bought by Anderson Bakery but kept the GD name.

I bought a lunch special ($6.95), choice of 2 items: soup/ salad/ sandwich - I got the clam chowder with a turkey avocado sandwich. The small paper bag has a mini cheese danish. Really good!

This place is like a mirage in the desert.  Not for being a culinary oasis- but rather b/c I barely noticed it today as I passed by.  The windows were very reflective, and the sign outside unassuming- no wonder why I've always passed this place by.

I had the veggie sandwich on wheat which came with a generous slathering of avocado.  That is always appreciated :)  The bread was hearty and healthy, and overall the sandwich was tasty.  I'm giving it four stars because now that I think about it, it is a nice break from having to deal with the staff at Cafe Venue nearby.

Not a bad spot to stop in and get coffee on the way to work, I hear they also make decent sandwiches (the Farmers Chicken Salad, and Mozzarella with Eggplant being standouts).

A good selection of pastries too, and I just tried one of their nine-grain bagels, which was also pretty decent.

All in all, a good place for a quick bite, but you wouldn't travel outside of your immediate walk to go.

The girls that work here could really careless about the type of service their customers receive. When i ordered, i had to try really hard to get their attention. I was already up at the cashier ready to order, just waiting for one of them to come over & get my order, but NAH they were just chillin' chit chatting with each other....until i said EXCUSE ME...then one of them came over.

Anyways, i ordered a sandwich for lunch - The turkey swiss i believe, and it was so WEAK....i usually enjoy their sandwiches but this time, i dont know about this place anymore. I'm just gonna stick to their pastries & breads from now on...

They put everything into wax paper bags!! I (clearly) find this utterly and delightfully charming.

The Creamy French is brilliant - custard (or chocolate cream) spread inside French bread. They sell out pretty quickly though; I breathed a sign of relief today when I saw two left around 1pm today and promptly purchased both.

The sandwiches are typical, nothing extraordinary but pretty good. The advantage of buying a sandwich here, as opposed to the other 23489346 places to buy sandwiches in the Financial District, is that they have quite a lot of good bread choices (appropriate, I suppose, for a bakery). Nice touch on wrapping each sandwich half separately

Also noticed today that their bagels are just $0.85. Will definitely be back to buy one, and maybe that yummy looking pesto cheese bread..

Grain D'or seems to be one of those "go-to" places for the staff at the office I work at. It's cute and spacious; plenty of room to sit down, although I have only ordered sandwiches to-go from there so far.

They do take a little time to prepare the sandwiches, but that shows that they prepare them fresh. I ordered the "Chicken Salad" sandwich today; really liked that they did have apples mixed into the sandwich with the other ingredients. The sandwich was filling, and the bread was fresh and slightly toasted. Mmm.

In general, though, I'm not a fan of sandwich shops; this is mainly because I find it a waste of money to go buy a sandwich for over $5 when I can very well make my own sandwich(es) with a bulk of ingredients costing a lot less (per sandwich). I just don't see much value in a $5-$6 sandwich.....

I desperately craved a bagel for breakfast the other day.  Specialty's was closed and I wasn't sure that Starbucks was carried bagels, so I went into Grain D'Or to try to find some bread for breakfast.  Lo and behold, they had 3 varieties of bagel to choose from.  I picked the asiago cheese bagel, toasted and dry.  It wasn't the best bagel I had by a long shot but it hit the spot and I was able to start my day with a full tummy.

I've always wanted to try their sandwiches, so perhaps I'll be back for that, but the Creamy France will always be my favorite item from here.

That tomato-basil soup everyone's raving about? I had it today and I see exactly what y'all are talking about. The little raviolis in there are the BEST! And it says something that I ordered it, because (a) I adore clam chowder and that was also on the menu; and (b) I'm making tomato-basil soup tonight. No raviolis though, regrettably.

In the unlikely event that I were to work in the Financial District, I'd be here all the time. It's a great light lunch for cheap.

This is one hell of a bakery but it fails big time in a few ways.

First, it takes FOREVER to get your order, whether it be a breakfast sandwich or coffee. When food is great my tolerance for wait times goes up, but here the wait feels as like it's just inefficiency, not because they're creating a masterpiece.

Second, the vibe sucks but could be easily fixed by putting some outdoor seating on the sidewalk.

Anyways, would like to see this place turn around, especially since it's on my way to the office.

This place isn't bad if you absolutely must have that shiny loaf sitting there on the shelf.  I bought some kind of bacon and cheese bun just to see what was up.  The bright interior and layout actually reminded me of bakeries I patronized in Germany (yes, folks, I really was there).  I'm surprised this is a local chain with some international branches.

For the good stuff, this place is hard to beat.  Used to love getting sandwiches there when I worked nearby.

Recently I went in on a Saturday morning, though - on my way to work, stuck my head above ground during my muni-bart transfer to get some food.  A simple bagel I wanted, with cream cheese.  They take the order OK, a few minutes later I'm handed a bag.  I look inside by chance - and there's a toasted bagel, cut in half.  I ask about the cream cheese, expecting them to take the bag back and actually do what I consider to be their job.  Nope, I'm handed a little plastic single serving of cream cheese and a knife.

For those who saw a guy in the Montgomery BART station one Saturday morning grumbling while balancing two bagel halves on his legs while trying to get cream cheese on them, that would be me, the guy who will go to a little more effort and look elsewhere next time...

I got the half salad and sandwich lunch special yesterday for lunch. I swear I saw something different on their menu when I walked in one time, but I guess I was seeing things. What is worse is that almost awkward feeling of having to order when you go up to read the menu. I seriously wish my vision was better.

This is how unmemorable my experience was. I forgot what type of salad I ordered with my meal. All remebered was it was okay, but the swiss cheese made it difficult to like. The BLT on whole wheat was surprisingly delicious and definitely makes me wonder how it was 'half" a sandwich.

I'm still finding new eats in the area, so we'll just go from there.

Just walking by this place I was just licking my lips away. Early in the morning I am always craving a little something and this day I was like I don't want a bagel, but wanted to try the danish pastries here. I have to admit though I also browsed the freshly baked bread and went back and forth on the pesto or the jalapeno cheese bread. So going back a little I got my creamy cheesy danish and decided on the jalapeno baked bread. Nice decent size and the prices reasonable.

The staff was friendly and busy working, but had a warm greeting style. The place I thought was clean and seating was a little spacious for just enough people.

They have several options for breakfast, but they also offer lunch with different sandwiches, salads and soups.

My danish was good, but I have to admit the one's that I have feasted on at a another place(I have yet to review )is the best that I have had so far.

I feel a little guilty that I didn't go there.

You may know better and if you do,well let know.

    Nice morning stop.

3.5 stars, and likely to make 4 when I go back. Staff were quick and friendly in greeting everyone who came in but without any sense of pressure to order instantly. The "light lunch" combo is a good deal--pick 2: large half sandwich, small Caesar or green salad, or large soup--at $7.00.

My sandwich and salad were tasty, though the Caesar was pretty basic. Layout provides plenty of space, light, and seating, making it a comfortable respite from Market Street and your office.

I'm glad I finally stopped in, and I look forward to my return.
