Review from Judith G.
This is the best Indian in my neighborhood - in fact its just a block away.
Firstly, if you can make the buffet, that's a good time to give everything a try.
Go early, before most of the food has been picked over.
Everything is tasty and fresh. Some dishes could use more zing, but on the whole its very good. I love the lamb buryani, he daal, the fish curry.
The atmosphere is more sophisticated than most Indian restaurants and the staff is extremely polite.
As someone else said, this is a place to eat in more than to have delivery. It is true that 'something happens' to the food - and the entire experience - when you have it delivered. My best meals here were always sitting down, in the evening (and not at the buffets). Then, again, it was pricier - but maybe worth it, once i a while.
On the whole, the restaurant is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, for those days you really crave Indian but want to stay close to home.
I threw in an extra star for the little free deserts they always throw in and for the wonderful fennel to clear your palate as you exit the restaurant - and the ambience.
Its one of my two go-to Indians within a few blocks from me. If you do not live right here, you will probably find others that are for more adventurous palates (including mine). -

A good indian food buffet on the upper eastside. We live very close and walk here all the time. All their food tasts perfectly authentic and their restaurant is maintained very well & tidy and most of all it doesn't reek of old curry when you walk in (like many indian buffet joints). Their naan is soooo fresh and one of the best I've ever tried. The tikka chicken marsala is okay, not as moist as you can make yourself at home. But the flavors are good and I like to dip everything into the cool yogurt? sauce. The tandoori chicken is really good but varies. But I hate that they only bring out 2 tandoori drumsticks at a time to your table and you have to request for more each time. The last time we went, the first "batch" was pretty dry, but the 2nd batch was really moist and yummy.
The only reason it gets 4 stars (and not 5) is b/c their selection is quite limited. A little dissapointed to see they didn't have more food choices in the buffet. But at least the price is very cheap, around $10 for the lunch buffet. And some days they include curry fish and some days they have other items instead. And their staff are very good and are constantly at your side. -

I order in delivery from this place a lot. Very solid Indian food. Their lamb biryani is particularly delicious.
Perk: They usually throw in some extras e.g. a dessert, side of lentils, etc. -

One of my favorite places to eat! Great inexpensive lunch buffet. Dinner is even more delicious. Excellent service. Definitely recommend this place.

This review is based on 2 take out experiences. The food wasn't the best. Although they threw in a free dessert, they skimped on the chutneys.

Pretty decent Indian food. Not the best I've had but it would definitely suffice if you are hungry and are in the mood for Indian food. Service was wonderful and quick. I would likely visit again if I were in a pinch.

This place has the best Indian in the neighborhood, in my opinion. We recently moved to the UES and have been trying out a few, and Andaz is always consistently the best, with super fast delivery. They even give you paratha and rice pudding with your delivery order!
I don't eat much authentic Indian food, but my bf religiously gets a super spicy vindaloo from here and loves it.
Excellent food, great service for delivery. If you are craving some yummy Indian food -- try ANDAZ! -

Came here for the lunch buffet after seeing that it was only 8.99, which is a heck of a deal even if the food sucks. The food was about 8.99 worth of a buffet, which means it wasnt bad but wasn't memorable and didnt make me really want to come back for more. The Tikka Masala was too sweet and bland - almost like a sweet tomato soup or pasta sauce - and the chicken was a bit tough. The best item on the buffet was probably the fish curry or the vegetable/potato stuff with peppers in it, because those two dishes didnt seem to have any real problems with being underspiced and/or watery. The daal was ok, along with the saag aloo but both were on the watery side. The tandoori chicken was lacking in heat - physically and flavor-wise, so that was a disappointment.
The staff was very attentive though, I'll give them that much. The restaurant itself was clean and well kept so no complaints there. I guess if you're in the area and are looking for an inexpensive indian fix then this is an alright option, but if you're really going to go for a good meal I'd go to Dhaba and spend an extra $4 to get better food and more variety. -

Good Indian restaurant, though I wouldn't call it great. Chicken Karahi had great flavor and was delicious with a buttery lachha paratha. Also had the vege vindaloo that no one at the table could stomach because if the intense heat and spice. We were warned of the spiciness, so can't blame anyone but ourselves. Samosas were fresh, but could've used a kick of spices. Gulab jamun fur dessert was ok. A bit mushy. The pistachio kulfi ice cream was awesome. Would love another serving!

This review is only for delivery and also mostly just for the Vegetable Korma but these things are very important to me!
I order from Andaz on a semi-regular basis and love it. They are very fast, always get the order right and also reasonably priced. Additionally, as a Vegetable Korma enthusiast, I can verify that theirs is some of the best is the city. Finally, even when I order food right at the delivery minimum ($14), they always throw in dosa and rice pudding for dessert. How nice of them! PS - this is the only place I get delivery from that saves my address in their system so they can look it up by a phone number and I don't have to repeat all my info for the 1000th time.
If you are hungry for some Indian food on the UES and do not want to leave the house (or, maybe even if you do - the pictures of the place look nice) you can't do better than Andaz. -

Great lunch deal, and great food to boot! $10 lunch buffet, several meat and veg options. They bring fresh naan to your table as well as fantastic aloo tikki chat, and then as you start your meal they bring tandoori chicken over. All of these they will bring more of if you ask, sort of like bonus buffet items. My water was always full, plates were cleared instantly, the place was nice and clean, and the staff were very friendly. Some things could've been slightly better, like the tikka masala (little watery, and tomato-soup sweet like others mentioned). But the naan was fantastic, the lamb keema matar had a nice spice, and the veg dishes were very flavorful. Overall, strongly recommended, certainly for the lunch buffet. I'll be back!

This is the worst Indian food I've ever tasted and the service was amateur.
I ordered the Chicken Saag and then was surprised when my waiter asked if I wanted rice with that.
Really? Rice is extra. Wow, classy.
The rice was not even the good basmati rice. What?
Then, not once, but twice, I had to spit out a cardamom shell or hard seed- nut thing. WTH? When I showed it to the waiter, he tried to pass it off like that was normal, instead of apologizing. I explained to him that when I place food in my mouth, I never want to remove it. Call me crazy.
When the bill came, it was like they were waiting to see if I was just going to pay full price for spitting out my food Finally, he asked "Can I do anything for you?" When I said, "Yes." He said, "Tell me what you'd like me to do?"
Are you serious? I'm not a restaurant owner, but it's sort of customary to never ask an unhappy customer to pay full price. And it's always best to knock off 15% to begin and not force your customer to haggle over the bill. Get a clue on how to treat customers, Andaz because this one won't be back. -

I've been here a few times, dropping by when I get some free time off from the hospital. I really enjoy the food here, maybe I'm not the biggest Indian critic by any means. But the food is maybe the best I found so far in this particular region.
The indian food isn't as spicy (moderate is really a mild) as one would be accustom to if coming from some other place other than UES.
Lunch, their dinner buffet seems to lack much variation but to be honest, the times that I've been here, I've been only eating by myself. Thus, who really needs much when they lack much cliente. Take it or leave it... and to be honest I come here because I'm sick of all the other food nearby. So thus, any change in food is good food to me. Note that buffet style food is always prepare in bulk and freshness and quality always depends upon when the food comes out and where you make your selection from the pile.
For dinner, I'm a bit of annoying costumer who doesn't know what he wants and tries everything. I always almost always get a chicken or lamb within my curry and garlic nan. I don't believe in extravegance and love the simplicity of my food and its ability to give complex taste.
The service is excellent here even if there is only one customer in the restuarant. They really work around you and always seem to be very sincere.
I still love this place, maybe its not the best but its a nice getaway from work, job, and stress. Maybe I take someone on a date here one day, the environment is definately romantic. -

Decent Indian take out if not inspiring. Reliable lamb saag, tandoori chicken too dry, chutney very spicy.
Asked for no coriander as my wife doesn't like it but they did not comply. If its close and your in the mood, go for it. -

I've had a hard time finding good Indian in the neighborhood with matching service -- as far as delivery goes, anyway. Andaz is the best I've found -- everything was very tasty and packed well, delivered as ordered and came quickly -- so happy to have found it.

I love Indian food, and I live around the corner from Andaz. This means you'll find me here often. But you'd probably see me here even if I lived further away. The food is good and very reasonably priced, and the service is fantastic.
Here's some of my favorite items in the menu:
* They have some of the best Onion Bahjia I've had--it's always very crispy, never burned, and is absolutely delicious with a little tamarind sauce.
* The Kalmi Kebab (chicken wings) appetizer is practically an entree. And I give it two thumbs up.
* They make great Rogan Josh--one of my favorite Indian dishes.
* The roti is good, as is the garlic naan (a little too buttery sometimes, but that's ok).
I've only gotten delivery once. Maybe it's because I'm so close, but it arrived very quickly, and the food was nice, and hot, and just as good as when we've dined in. I was pleased to see that they sent pappadam with cilantro chutney, tamarind sauce, and onion relish (as you'd get at the table). They also sent some free rice pudding.
The only bone I have to pick with Andaz is their raita. It is way too watery. I hate that, because I love raita, but I've given up on it here. -

I goto Andaz once a week, every week for their lunch buffet. They've made me a regular customer because it is affordable, clean and very very fresh with good service. It is one of the best buffets I've experienced in Manhattan.
The appetizers rotate and are usually 2 salads with 1 Indian type appetizer like a deconstructed samosa or a delicious eggplant with tamarind sauce (my favorite item there).
As far as entrees, they always have rice with chicken tikka masala. I will admit the chicken is often dry but the masala base makes up for it. It is rich, creamy and savory. The other entrees rotate every week from fish or egg curry to chicken kofta, with at least 2 other vegetarian dishes. I'm not much of a desert fan and havent tried it yet.
The service is very courteous. The facility is clean. I'd give this place 5 stars if they would be a bit more bold with their spices and flavors. I feel like this is not necessarily Andaz's problem but a problem among most Indian restaurants in Manhattan -- they seem to be a bit timid with the spice. Otherwise, Andaz is a great place for a weekend buffet! -

this is a place you"dine in" at because something happens to the food when it's delivered. Not sure what but something...
Paneer Makhani was very good but in need of a little more spices, apps were different but in a good way. Staff is friendly but a little too interested in how you are enjoying the meal.
We hit this about once a week but like I said, don't do delivery! -

Andaz is a nice new addition to the UES, serving tasty Indian Cuisine. It is a small and casual restaurant, but a nice place to come for a meal. The food was all really well prepared and moderately priced. They do an "all you can eat" lunch buffet 7 days a week, which would definitely be a nice brunch alternative.
We tried the Samosas, which were yummy and well made. The Lamb Saag was perfectly made, and such tender meat and perfectly spiced spinach. The Chicken Tikka was extremely juicy and tender. The marinade of yogurt, ginger, garlic, and Indian spices was delicious and really came through in flavor.
This was a nice experience. I am happy to have a new Indian restaurant in the area, as I do not currently have a "go to" place for Indian... maybe I do now.
I recommend giving Andaz a shot. It's a new restaurant and so far so good! Let's see if this place can stick. I plan to come back and try some more! -

I really want to like this place. hell, i'm struggling because i'm not giving the 3 stars. But alas, i cannot do better than 2, though 2 1/2 would probably be more accurate. i tend to round up in these situations, but after last nights dinner i cannot.
Previously i had only gone to their all you can eat lunch - it was ok, nothing special, not bad, just sorta uninspired. But i figured in an all you can eat thing you need to cater to the lowest common denominator in taste, nothing can be too spiced, or too adventurous. So i held off reviewing them until i had dinner, and could judge more fairly. I'm pretty sure they wish i hadn't
for an appetizer i had Papri Chat: crispy puri, chickpea, onion and potato mixed with tamarind, mint and yogurt. Sounds good, no? no. overly sweet, no subtlety, no balance, no good.
for the main i had shrimp vindaloo. Now, i have spent a fair amount of time in Goa over the years, so i know a good vindaloo. Don't get me wrong, i place tastiness over authenticity in most cases, but this vindaloo had neither. In its defense i will say i was very spicy, as a vindaloo ought to be. That's the only good thing i can say about it. It had little flavor other than the heat, it was under-seasoned (i doubt it saw any salt), it didn't have the sour base needed for a Goan dish, it was a godawful neon maroon color that scared me, and the shrimp were probably slightly undercooked. it had a few potatoes which have sneaked into this dish over the years because it has aloo in its name (but that doesn't mean potato in this dish, it just reflects its Portuguese roots) but i wont hold that against it. why bother when it has so many actual problems.
finally i had some pistachio kulfi for dessert. sadly i could not taste any pistachio in it.
i wish this places was as great it is cute, as delicious as it is close to my house.

So we wanted to get Indian food right in our nabe, and this is pretty good find in the UES. The vindaloo is surely spicy enough, so be forewarned. The lamb is tender. The channa masala is good; it's a bit sweeter than I've had before. The aloo paratha was ok. The thing that bothered me is their $3.95 white rice (that's unusual to me...). For that, I am steering more towards ordering stuff to go and making rice at home to go with it.
Service was good; our water had been constantly refilled. There was a good number of patrons. Place is cleanly. I'd really like it if they did a dinner buffet.
I want to next time try their saag paneer. I also find it somewhat concerning that on their website, "canned soda" is on the top 10 most ordered items list. Must be good, haha. -

Love It! This is our go-to place. The staff are always good to us, and the food is always fresh and prepared just right. This is the best Saag Panner that I have ever had, with fresh, bright green spinach, and they tell me the cheese is made fresh in their kitchen. The Malai Kofta is definitely the best I've had so far in the city, buttery and rich. The Somosas and Parathas are fantastic (if heart-attack inducing). Also, if you have a favorite food you don't see it, just ask! They will make it for you (as they did with us recently after my girlfriend discovered she loved Mater Panner at another place).
The other day, the manager told me I looked like I'd put on a pound or two... and it's true! And it's all their fault! -

Solid as a rock Indian take out!
I ordered on Friday night - been eating for lunch all weekend - yum!
So i order what I always get to determine if i'll ever order again...chana masala, lamb vindaloo, some naan.
Chana masala may be the best i ever had, garlic nan solid too, perfect.
I asked for my lamb to be very hot hoping they would get me near authentic levels. I sweat and drank 4-5 beers just eating half of it. WOO HOO I felt alive. Meat was tender sauce was develish!
Ive been ordering take out indian for 20 years in the NYC NJ area...this was by far my most pleasureable blue collar indian meal.
Nice touch with the rice pudding finish fo free!
It all cost about 32 bucks, had dinner and 2 lunches. No Delhi Belly!
Order here fast! BTW the woman who took my order was as nice as they come, I'll be a long time customer.
HOORAY for ANDAZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -

I have low expectations for service at an Indian lunch buffet. Clearly nobody told the staff here that! They were very attentive and made sure my belly was full of great food. At a great price of course too.
If you're going for a workday lunch, cancel all afternoon meetings so that you can better deal with the food coma. -

I've only had takeout from Andaz, so this rating reflects that experience. I've ordered from here three times.
On delivery, they've been timely and have always gotten my order 100% correct.
The highlight for me is the food - it's great. I tried Bawarchi, Baluchi's, Shamrat and Chennai before I settled on Andaz. Certainly the best Indian delivery on the UES.
Try the Chicken Chattinad if you like very spicy, peppery dishes. -

BLEGH. I live right around the corner and see the $9.95 lunch buffet menu all the time. Decided to give it a try and I thoroughly regret it. If you want Indian buffet, go to Brick Lane instead. This unsatisfying meal ruined my appetite for the rest of the day. My digest system hates me for what I put it through.
I'm not even sure how I should structure the review. Was the food or the experience worse? They were both so, so terrible.
The food lacked spice and the selection of curries did not pair well with each other. The chicken tikka masala was watery and tasted like sweet tomato soup. The rice was super dry. My entire meal tasted the same. I got so bored. I had to force myself to finish my first plate and then convince myself that maybe the other two curries I hadn't yet tried would be better. They weren't.
The entire dining atmosphere here is SO UNCOMFORTABLE. It's oddly quiet and for some reason the thermostat was turned up too high making the whole place warm and humid. That combination goes great with shoddy curry to create an experience I never want to relive again. -

I had the Aloo Ghobi and my friend had the Chicken Tikka Masala. It was very yummy. The only downside is that you have to pay extra for rice. It is not included with your entree. The portions are quite large and the service was pretty good.

Every time we go for "a quick" lunch here, it turns into well over an hour. Let me tell you why:
They have Indian beers. I'm not one to shy away from an alcoholic beverage or two at lunchtime on a weekday. They have a buffet special. The staff is polite and attentive, and after one of those huge Taj beers, I tend to have some obscure conversation with the waiter about Spanish superstitions or the Taj Mahal. They bring out fresh baked naan. It is the BEST I've ever tasted, and every week I burn my greedy little fingers on it. These things, combined with pleasant Indian music and atmosphere, lull me into a zen like state, which of course calls for a lovely Chai to linger over.
Oh, am I late getting back to work? That's okay, because I am one with the universe. -

By far the BEST legit. Indian restaurant!
I've been to so many other Indian restaurants but they just don't cut it. Andaz has never disappointed me, and the waiters and manager are great!
Portion and price is decent, and the setting is cozy.
I asked them to make it spicy "their way" and they made it spicy, just like how I like it.
Lamb Briyani is delicious!
Samosa's and garlic naan!
the buffet lunch is really good too!

Appetizers were awesome. 5 bucks for a hefty sized plate of samosas.
I got the chicken curry for my entree. it was meh, and about the same size as my appetizer. food took over an hour to come out. not going back out of spite for that, but maybe others will have better luck.
appetizer: $5 - great
entree: $12 - meh
22 oz beer: $7 - meh -

I've had Andaz three times. Twice for delivery and once dining in. Maybe it's just the cheapskate in me talking, but I prefer this place for delivery. When you order in, the entrees come with rice (in the restaurant, you pay extra), plus they send you papadum, dal, and kheer.
The best things I've had here are the vegetable samosas and the chicken tikka. The boti kebab was better at the restaurant than at home. The baingain bharta was fine. The saag paneer was under seasoned. The mint-cilantro chutney (my favorite thing about Indian food) was middle-of-the-road.
It's solid indian food and good for the neighborhood, but it's nothing I'd get on a subway for. -

Andaz was my first foray into Indian food, and I'm glad it was! I've been there for the lunch buffet several times, and it's never disappointed. It's a small restaurant, so there isn't much space for a buffet, but they have a nice selection of dishes and what they do make they make well. I can always fill my plate with vegetarian friendly items, and everything is always hot and fresh.
The service is as attentive as you'd expect a buffet to be. They refill your water often enough to be convenient, but not too often that you feel they're hovering and listening to your conversation. And the lunch buffet is only $8.99, so even with tax and tip it's a great value for a filling buffet. If it wasn't so far from where I lived, I would certainly bring friends and try out their offerings at other times of the day as well. -
Review from Neha S.
This has the be the WORST indian food place on the planet. Ordered delivery from here. Got the saag paneer and my friend ordered the vindaloo and we both got garlic naan. My saag looked like pureed broccoli - it was this light green color, which i'm sure meant that they just put spinach and heavy cream in a blender and threw some cheese in it. Saag paneer is not blended spinach - but it should be fresh spinach sauteed with cheese. Anyway, I decided not to judge the book by its cover and tasted it - tasted like NOTHING. I had to dump mounds of salt and luckily had some spices to try to add some flavor, but it was just awful. Even the garlic naan was too dry and bland. NEVER GO HERE!

I ordered delivery last night from Andaz Indian Restaurant because I had a 25% off coupon. I am not a huge fan of Indian food, but a few times per year I get an intense craving for it- and this was one of those times.
I ordered 2 of the most highly rated items on the menu, putting my trust in Yelpers and seamlessweb.com-ers. The Saag Paneer (spinach with cheese) was awesome- huge chunks of the paneer cheese and fresh spinach and spices. The lasooni Gobhi (cauliflower in a sweet red sauce) was also good, but the sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking and tasted like it was definitely ketchup based. Both dishes were quite tasty when eaten folded up on the nan, even though the nan itself was on the greasy side. I always love the sauces that come with Indian food, and the cilantro sauce cut the sweetness of the cauliflower just enough. I also ordered a mango lassi - a mango yogurt drink, that was such a bright shade of orange that I assume they must either add food coloring or perhaps some canned fruit to get that intensity. It tasted excellent, and I wished I had more when I finished it. The basmati rice that
came with my meal was fine, but it's just plain rice, so I put it in the fridge to use for something else. The nan bread was plenty of carbs for me, and I didn't feel the need to waste my appetite on boring rice. They also included some kind of dessert, free of charge. As much as I love free stuff, when it's an orange rice pudding-ish, jello-y thing with soggy cashews and raisins, It goes straight to garbage-land. Yeah. Not interested.
Overall, Andaz was reasonably priced, quickly delivered and tasty. I have heard that the buffet is also totally worth a visit- but my next craving most likely won't be for many months. We'll see...
