5 reviews for Andale
Andale is a Mexican-style restaurant that opened in the Penn Quarter after Co-owner, Chef Alison Swope (who has a background in Latin cuisine) took a month-long sabbatical in Mexico. This is THE place I go to to satisfy my Mexican cravings. The decor is cheery, colorful and fun (for groups I like the round booth best). The cuisine is not typical straight up Mexican; it has more interest than that.
I recommend that you start out your experience with a margarita (I like the Prickly Pear). Andale's bar could easily boast having the largest selection of tequilas in DC. I attended an event where the bartender from Andale taught us how to make the perfect margarita - note to self: I'll have to dig that up! And if the crowds that flock to the bar are any indication - the margaritas are fantastic!
While the menu changes frequently, you can almost be sure to find some dish with Carnitas, Tamales or Mole sauce, all of which I recommend. The Mexican hot chocolate and donuts is a nice way to finish your meal.
Unfortunately right now they are closed for renovations (since July, which is an awfully long time!) I'm sure Alison is cooking up something spectacular!
Decent, though overpriced.
CLOSED FOR RENOVATION.
Not bad upscale Mexican, but a bit overpriced. The biggest plus is the location close to the National Gallery area. Though it has to compete with Jaleo, there's not much else for a few blocks. Definitely worth a try.
Andale was great, but it is now permanently out of business and Oyamel, Jose Andres's Mexican small plates, is in the location. Just in case anyone accidentally found this review and wanted to check it out.
I have eaten here for lunch before and enjoyed the upscale Mexican atmosphere and good food and drinks (margaritas and flavored waters/juices). But tonight I had an experience for which I will never return. My 21-year-old friend's ID was rejected in the rudest customer service i have ever experienced at a restaurant. I respect the manager's decision to reject a license from a state that does not have holograms or scanners, but under no circumstance can i accept his decision to treat us like second class citizens and be a downright jerk. We left and I will not go back.
