We bought a Groupon (or something like it) for Ancho's. We had to spend $30. We ended up going at lunch with 2 adults and 1 nine year old.  We got there early so it was not crowded. They had the buffet (it was taco Tuesday) and the waiter brought us menus. Since Yelper Mike B mentioned the calamari, that was what I wanted to try. I am always searching for the best in Austin. The calamari was not on the menu. I asked the waiter if it was only available for dinner - "no problem" he said, "we have it in the kitchen - you can have it." Yeah! Great service. It was then decided that we would have the buffet for the three of us plus the calamari and soft drinks and it would be $30 (our certificate value). Awesome!

While we were there, the restaurant got busy. Lots of people were taking food out, but many were eating there as well. It looked like there was a conference. The space is really pretty on a sunny day with the windows soaring up for 20 stories.

The calamari was delicious. Probably the second best I have had in Austin. There were both tentacles and tubes and the aioli was already drizzled on - to very good effect. The iced tea also was noteworthy. I am not sure what was in it - but it had a delicious note to it. The buffet was terrific : lots of variety, cold salads or sandwiches, soup, chili, baked potatoes, and the taco fixings. There was the largest bowl of guacamole I have ever seen - the nine year old was THRILLED about that. I thought the turkey curry salad was yummy. Overall I thought the food was very good. It is made to satisfy a range of palates - so not super spicy or really strong tasting. I will likely go back some time as it is near the Paramount and other downtown venues I frequent from time to time.

In the middle of the road as far as price goes...Ancho's was an enjoyable experience.   Actually in the big atrium of the Omni Hotel building, it's geared towards lazy guests of the hotel (i.e. Me).  It still manages to make the experience a pleasant one versus your typical hotel restaurants.

If you are dining alone, there is plenty of distraction.  You can gaze up and down the hotel and adjacent office building windows for a possible peep show.

I ordered the calamari based on other Yelp reviews.  Maybe I was placing too much expectation?  It was good but not O.M.G.  I would have preferred the sauce to be served on the side.  Depending on how much they put in, you could end up with very wet calamari pieces.

I had a simple meal of a grilled chicken sandwich and fries.  Served on bruschetta with greens, tomato, and pesto mayo, it was yummy.  The chicken was plump white meat and the fries had seasoning to them to make them more than your standard frozen variety.

There are plenty of other restaurants within walking distance.  But, if you are not wanting to deal with the 6th Street crowd on a weekend night, just eat at Ancho's if you're staying in the Omni.

It's get 4 stars for pure versatility and ability to dine in or grab something and go. This place is actually in the Omni building and you can either sit down and order a meal (great Reuben sandwiches) or help yourself to the buffet. The buffet offers salads, an array of noodle salads and a different soup each day.  They also offer chili, baked potatoes and cold cuts so you can make a sandwich 10 stories high if you like. Not to mention there is a specialty bar that allows a different meal each day of the week. (Taco tuesday, etc.)  The buffet is typically used for food to go by many patrons and is priced by weight. You take your food to the Starbucks kiosk and they'll weigh it for you. This is quick and easy and the food is of good quality and done well. I can eat here for 6 bucks.

Sitting down to eat @ Ancho's is nice, especially on a sunny day. I've spotted several Hollywood celebrities here as this seems to be a hotel used frequently while filming in Austin.

Note: I do not recommend Ancho's as a dinner spot. Not only because this is primarily a lunch destination, but taking someone to eat in a hotel, regardless of how nice seems, is a bit creepy. "Uh, after you finish those peas we can rent a room and dry hump for awhile... I mean... if you want."  See? I don't think so.

Ancho's is located inside of the Omni hotel here in downtown Austin.  My girlfriend and I had a date night here last night partly because we had a gift certificate to this place.  Let me tell you, if it wasn't for the gift certificate or wanting to try new places, I probably wouldn't have stopped by Ancho's.

First let me point out the two positive highlights of our evening.  The service was great, but that may be due to the fact that we were the only people in there for dinner that night...literally...only people!  Second, the calamari was delicious.  I try calamari at almost every venue that I visit simply because I love calamari and the way that it was prepared here was very unique.  The aioli sauce had this Tex-Mex flare going on that almost tasted like it had chorizo in it.  The also had some chopped olives underneath the calamari to give it some texture and contrast in flavors.  Finally the atmosphere wasn't too bad, the architecture of the Omni set against the sunsetting sky of Austin was nice for a date.

For our main dishes, I had a chicken sausage ziti and and my gf had the short ribs, neither of which are worth describing since both were just ok but the prices here made them "eh."  I probably won't come back here, it was just a one time deal to eat at a different place but beyond the calamari, the food was just ok and a bit overpriced for me.

    Cheers

I've never sat down and ordered a meal here, but their lunch buffet can't be beat for those of us who work in the area (Austin Suites offices are in the same building as the Omni). It's a pay-by-the-pound deal, and I've made decadent (if smallish) salads topped with marinated grilled tofu and gotten hummus, couscous and pita to go on the side for under $4. You can also make a sandwich or get a bowl of one of the two soups of the day ($2). I'd recommend getting it to go and eating elsewhere. Just pay at the little coffee kiosk in front.
