While I agree with many reported service problems at this restaurant (they try to get by with one waiter--the SAME waiter--ALONE, every night), the food IS great, the best on The Castro (unfortunately, a low bar). Try the Borscht Stew--it's not on the menu every night, but when it is, I always order it.
If you're in the mood for anything fish, go here.
I head here an average of twice a week and almost always order some sort of combination of the following: Oysters on the half shell x6, Clam Chowder, Crab Cake appetizer, Caesar Salad, Cioppino (not on the menu but they usually can accommodate if you ask about it).
The food rocks. Sometimes you might even luck out with the house wine being a Marlborough sauv blanc. The caesar dressing, oysters, and the chowder are really some of the best I've ever had anywhere.
The only downside is that the place is pretty tiny... meaning you might not always get a seat and have to wait outside (in the cold) unless you want to go across the street for a few drinks at Nirvana to wait.
Oh, and if you need to go to the bathroom, you actually need to walk through the kitchen to get there... which is so awesome on so many levels that they really aren't trying to be like everyone else and are fine with being old school.

this place SUKCED! Service was terrible, food was expensive and looked like it was prepared my some part time cook from Dennys. Oysters were soupy and suspiciously old smelling. Yet another piss poor restaurant in the Castro that serves up half assed food at outrageous prices. Thanks, but I wont be back.
Not many things in this world would compel me to drive across town in the rain to get to it, but Anchor Oyster Bar's Crab Sandwich is one of them.
OMFG - I think I seriously would drown a bag of kittens for a plate of these. Ok, maybe not drown, how about bathe?
The crab is SO good, served hot with melted cheese and veggies on a bun....geez, I'm literally salivating all over my keyboard just writing this. Anyway - also comes with a fantastic bowl of clam chowder which is usually kinda gross most places, but here is fantastic.
Eating the food here, you kind of get the feeling you are having something special - something not many people know about. Anchor has been both a revered staple of San Francisco and also a hidden gem for aver 40 years. If you haven't been, here's some tips:
-Get the freaking crab! (though everything is amazing)
-Prepare to wait if you come at prime-time dinner. They have VERY limited seating. Yes, I have seen them give some VIP treatment from time to time with the waitlist - usually doesn't delay you more than a few minutes and your taste buds will thank you for waiting!

Sure, it's small inside, but the food is pretty amazing.
James and I both had the chowder (great flavor and thickness, just the thing to watch oyster crackers drown in) and salmon special. The salmon special was a farm raised Scottish salmon with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The potatoes were great, the vegetables were acceptable, and the salmon was great -- flaky and tender to the point of nearly melting.
The waiter claimed the salmon farm was so humane PETA approved; I can only assume that humane farms make delicious salmon. Note that we were both skeptical of PETA approving a salmon farm but with fish this good we were willing to suspend our disbelief for the 90 minute meal (hear that Michael Bay? it's not acting skills that Pearl Harbor was lacking, it's really delicious salmon).

Hands down the best seafood in town. The scallops are seared and prepared to perfection. If you are an oyster fan you must order the Anchor Special (12 oysters on the half shell, 8 steamed Clams, 4 chilled prawns) to share. Unbelievable good. I only wish that they either took reservations or commandeer the space next door and expand! They would definitely fill up both spaces!

it was an delightful little late night snack run. The service here was super sweet and the waiter for our table was pretty knowledgeable about oysters, which is what I went there for. Decided to order the combination plate with steamed clams, shrimp cocktails and a dozen of oysters (3 of each kind, the wellfleet, miyagi, pacific, and the eastern). And it was De-li-cious! Miyagi is still my fav! But definitely try this place out if you are in the city, the oysters are pretty fresh, didnt get to order anything else because my company kept on nagging about how I already had dinner and it's not right to eat so much and blah, blah, blah. But everything else looks pretty delicious as well. And btw, did I mention the service is really good too!
So my friend has always been obsessed with this place, since he's oyster crazy. So we finally went together with a couple other friends a few fridays ago. The wait was LONG, understandably. But it was especially cold outside that night as that's where we had to wait since the place is so tiny. I kept thinking to myself "This place had better be worth it". Now, as a hardcore seafood lover, once we were seated and I took a look around and at the menu, I felt like I had just stepped into my personal fishy heaven. Everything sounded great and I couldn't decide. We ended up getting two dozen oysters. The waiter arranged to give us a sampler of each kind they were offering that night. We also had an artichoke appetizer, clam chowder, ceasar salad, and I ordered the prawn cocktail (my favorite kind of seafood). All were fantastic. I need to start saving my meager wages to go back again.

Sorry, sorry, sorry, I am the reviewer #70 here, I feel like I broke the #69.
Passed by this place many times, tried it, it was good.
Lately, I've gone by here at least once a week and on a whim, I decided to go in. Okay, first off, I know it's a bit expensive, but it's seafood, right? Anyway, i walked in and sat at the bar closest to the kitchen and let me say that if you're prone to be claustrophobic, this may not be the place for you, because it's a small space that fills up quickly. The waitstaff was cordial and attentive and as I stated before, my meal was pricey but very good. I had their green salad with shrimp and their bowl of clam chowder. The green salad was fresh with very generous portions of shrimp, I had it with a balsamic vinaigrette and it made you feel as though you were indulging without the guilt. The seafood chowder was delicious and hearty. I'm definitely going back, when I make a bit more money.

The seafood was fresh. The service ok, the ambiance lacking...it does not compare to Swan's in my eyes, but still good seafood.
This is my first time at Anchor Oyster Bar, and I now have it marked as a place I would definitely go back to. The place was intimate. The wait staff was very attentive.
Good suggestion on the salad dressings to go with the crab salad--their creamy garlic dressing.
I also had my first crab cakes in my life (I'm 42). I expected crab cakes to be very dense, but wow, they weren't--there's a airy factor to them. I got to experience these three amazing hockey puck-sized yummies with tiny tip-of-your-finger-sized potatoes and a large-sized side salad. I was skeptical about those weird little potato things at first, but found out quickly that they were also very very good.
The place is pricey, but well worth it--$23 or so for three excellent quality and tasty crab cakes, potatoes, and a side salad. My friend treated me, but I can't wait to treat her next time. Just an excellent meal--I look forward to many more at this place.

I used to eat here often when I was living in the Bay.I still make it a thing to stop by whenever I'm back home visiting. One of the best place all around for fresh oysters,I come here for this very reason.I love oysters and anyone that knows me can tell you I can easily consumed 70-80 oysters at a time.I'm am very picky(where I eat fresh oysters) and I come here to AOB because I know their oysters are always clean and fresh.if you are a big fan of fresh oysters as I am,I would highly recommend this place.
Yes, this place has excellent fish dishes, oysters, clam chowder, etc. Yes it is cozy - i.e. small and often crowded if you come at the wrong time. Yes the service is outstanding.
But look at the sign, it is also a Fish Market.
Hands down the best place I have bought fish in SF. I am sure there are better places, but considering how this is four blocks from my house I'm not complaining.
After eating fish from here so much, I'm going to get so pumped full of mercury I'll be able to take your temperature. Anywhere you like.

two stars seems to fall below the average here. if it wasn't for the 30 minute wait that ended with two separate parties being seated prior to us (despite being told that we were the first ones there), i'd have given them more stars. what got me the most was the fact that our names were on the board before these people, AND the server actually pointed to us and sat both parties anyway. no apologies. after telling myself that i need to let this go, i finally allowed myself to enjoy my boyfriend's company and the food. the special was good. i loved the miyagi oysters and i especially had a thing for the steamed clams. sopping up that broth with the crusty bread was a good thing. it would have been great had it not been for the preferential treatment. the only reason why i would return is if my boyfriend really wanted to go.

This cozy place is great, everything was amazing-- food, service, presentation and overall experience
She got the sesame crusted salmon entree.
I got a small green salad, 8 assorted oysters and the mahi mahi special
It came with some amazingly tasty mashed potatoes, asparagus that was not too soft and not too hard, and pretty carrot looking things
The small salad was also unique, with large chunks of stuff that was cooked down to make it softer and more pleasurable on the palate and stomach :)
The mahi mas thick, meaty but not too dry
Hers came with some rice thing and the rabbe? type of broccoli that was also the perfect consistency
The flavors on everything were optimally balanced, not too little, not too much
Bread, butter and water were immediately replaced when used
They Hoegaarden on tap and a nice array of wines as well as take Discover cards ( a rarity )

I walked by Anchor Oyster Bar probably over 100 times and always want to try it. I even got rave reviews from some friends on their seafood. Finally I cleared my bank account on my day off, went into Anchor and ordered myself a fresh dungeness crab meat sandwich with a cup of clam chowder. The chowder came and it was hot which is a good sign. A couple spoonful confirmed that either the chef had a cold or he forgot his salt and pepper. It was a creamy concoction of diced vegetable and chopped clams. Then the long awaited "fresh" crab meat sandwich arrived. The crab meat was moist but lack of the sweetness of fresh crab meat (like the one I had at Swan). In between the buns, there was a piece of lettuce and a slice of tomato. No cocktail sauce, tartar sauce or even salt and pepper. Again, with my high blood pressure and high cholesterol, I probably should appreciate that the sandwich did NOT come with any condiment. I am just curious how did the management know about it in advance.
Service was very friendly and welcoming, to say the least.

Awesome oysters, shrimp cocktail and clam chowder. This place is definitely on the expensive side (or maybe I just can't stop eating oysters). My favorite places to eat on Castro Street when money isn't an object.
I originally gave them only 4 stars because of price, but I have to change it and give them five because they are quality and quality is worth paying for. Their menu is so logical and so perfect without any silly items on it (Gordon Ramsay would approve). The interior of the restaurant is small but clean and neat. I would say the interior is very simple but somehow very sophisticated at the same time. No crap inside, which I like. I like the front window too. Whenever I walk by it ALWAYS appeals.

Absolutely love Anchor Oyster Bar. This little diamond in a rough is so wonderful.Their garden salad was very fresh that even the plain carrots were so good, the garlic prawns were flavorful, and one of the fish specials ( I can't recall which fish I had) was made with a stunning sauce which just complemented and tied the whole dish together. Our waiter had great customer service and was very knowledgeable when it came to the oysters. My suggestions is to arrive early since it is tiny and will get very crowded. Definitely way better to go here for a full meal along with fresh oysters over Hog Island Oyster Bar with their mediocre food menu.
How funny that my latest find has been here for decades. Anchor Oyster Bar thoroughly reminds me of my life, long ago, as an artist working in costal New England restaurants to help pay the rent. This place is an authentic seaside raw bar! So authentic that it feels a little out of place in the Castro. Then again, it was here before the nabe was even called the Castro.
For me, it's all about the oysters. Good selection, slightly expensive, but really served right. Some crusty bread, a selection of wines and beers oriented to work with oysters, and a really nice setup that lets you decide how much horseradish to mix into your cocktail sauce. Most of all, the oysters are fresh, fresh, fresh. And the staff is really nice too. So whether you're in the neighborhood and ready for something different, or an East Coaster looking for a fix, Anchor is here to hook you up.

Top notch oyster bar. Can't believe it's been here over 30 years and I'm just now discovering it! Best clam chowder I've had in the city, yet (still not topping what I've had elsewhere, but we're getting closer!). The bread was perfect for dipping in the creamy soup. Good oysters (duh), and, best of all, PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT steamed clams! Love the sprigs of rosemary; a wonderful and aromatic compliment to the buttery white wine garlic broth.
I must also commend the service. So friendly and helpful when I was in a bit of a crisis. It was also fun dishing with the waiter about the Harvey Milk filming, as it's next door to his old camera shop giving them a front row seat for filming. They've undergone a transformation, same as the rest of Castro. I hope I recognize Anchor once it's back to it's old (or should I say new?) look!
We were just walking around the Castro and found this place by coincidence. We were lucky enough to get there just before the dinner rush. Service here was outstanding. Presentation just made me smile, because you don't see that much anymore. They placed the seafood on top of crushed ice with seaweed swirled around overhead. Very pretty.
First off, this place scores points with me for simply being the quaint 30 year established neighborhood spot that it is, I just love that. The small room with its marble topped bar and exposed kitchen makes for a cozy space which the servers navigated admirably.
Okay, the clams were small, prices on the high side and beer taps not working, but the oysters were fresh and yummy and the smooth clam chowder was the perfect antidote for a cold winter day. My lunch mate enjoyed the enormous crab burger but I can't vouch for it, I was too busy soaking up the wonderful broth the clams came in with copious amounts of sourdough to bother trying his sandwich.
It would be nice if there were some accent sauce options for the oysters on the half shell akin to what Eos offers (and a happy hour discount wouldn't be bad either) but all in all I was quite a happy clamper.

One my favorite places in the city to enjoy amazing seafood, in a comfortable atmosphere. I have yet to find fresher fish, oysters or crab in the city, and I love their clam chowder - pasta's are always changing and delicious. Not cheap, but you can't get better quality food. Fun, friendly and efficient servers add to the experience. This place rocks!
After soliciting Yelpster advice on the best places to eat Kumamotos, we stopped in to Anchor this weekend. The place is really small, but in a charming way. Many people mentioned a wait, so we dropped by at an off hour between lunch and dinner and had our pick of bar or table seating. The Kumos were excellent and we also had some Miyagis that were great. My only disappointment is that they're served with horseradish, cocktail sauce and lemon wedges, no shallot vinaigrette like at Hog Island, Zuni, Foreign Cinema etc. Not a deal breaker, but it's such a nice compliment with the oysters. We just went for the oysters, but the rest of their menu looked like it was worth coming back for!
****Update 3/4/08
The food is incredible! The best petrale sole preparation I've ever had. They serve a handful of specials every night (I don't think there's a regular menu) and everything is excellent. The wine list is not good, which is really unfortunate because the food is so great, and I'm not being a wine snob. On the plus side, they don't charge a corkage fee and will happily chill it so you can bring something with you or look at the menu while you wait for your table then walk acoss the street to Swirl and grab a Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Champagne, Muscadet, etc to compliment your oysters or fish. If you don't mind the extra step, I think it's great to be able to pair with exactly what you want. It makes all the difference in the world!

Love it. Love the oysters, love the gigantic crab caesar salad, I even love the bread. Oh, and love the delicious little oyster crackers. Go early to avoid the wait.
i was given a multiple choice where & what i want to eat for dinner tonight and none of the choices mentioned AOB, not until we saw a perfect parking spot across from this place and decided just to have some seafood here.
lucky indeed, there was no wait. we took the window seat, a perfect post to see the light rain pouring and people watch.
we ordered the most fascinating 6 pcs. of garlic bread in the planet. it was crunchy, toasty & soft in the inside and certainly bursting with flavor!!!
the huge bowl of green mussels, with a tease of soupy broth was amazingly edible, that you could dip your bread in it. the meat of this shellfish were all sensually plumped & deliciously, fleshy, warm to the palate. just perfectly cooked to be enjoyed with a squeeze of lemon.
the caesar salad with shrimp was also spectacular. they put the most rotund, pudgy shrimp ever landed in my salivating mouth. the romaine lettuce were gently tossed, for none of every single leaf was torn or bruised. a could hear the subtle crunch of these greens while chewing.
the dressing was justly mixed and they definitely used splendid croutons, made from fresh french bread.
sea salt, hot sauce, pepper & oyster crackers (for your clam chowder, which they creatively used an abalone shell as a container) were all arranged conveniently on each tables.
the place is quite small, having 5 tables only and a tiny bar with simple decor.
impressively "shucking" since 1977, this place surely proves that they are doing an excellent job!

Who says gay men don't like fish? Who says gay men don't like to go down on fresh briny oysters with red sauce? This is the only restaurant that can convert bitchy gay men into clam-sucking seafarers.
This is best seafood restaurant in the Castro. Unpretentious... Food lovingly crafted. The meals are a bit square (always a starch and vegetable stacked mountain high with a huge piece of fish). No cosmopolitans here, just really good, honest food.
Locals who know this place always get the combination seafood salad. Mounds of fresh crab meat and shrimp in home-made salad dressing (definitely get the creamy garlic dressing) with perfectly blanched carrot pieces.
Skip "Catch" (mediocre seafood; people go there for the strong cocktails) on Market and skip "Woodhouse". This is the best seafood in San Francisco.

I have a weird obsession with oysters where if I go too long without eating them, I begin inserting them into my daily conversation. Example below.
"How's your day going?"
"Good, could use an oyster, but I'm on track to get you that document by end of day."
So when that happens, it's time for me to get oysters and stop being a weirdo.
Living around the corner from Swan Oyster Depot and seeing the horrendous daily line full of tourists, my boyfriend and I decided to check out Anchor in the Castro.
Sing it with me: OB-SESSED!
The oysters are phenomenal! We sampled all of the daily specials, though I have a special place in my heart for kumamotos - which were huge! (They are small oysters, but Anchor had ones that were bigger than usual.) They offer a variety of seafood options from clam chowder to seafood salad to seafood platters. They have a variety of beers and wines to complement each dish, though let's be honest, nothing beats oysters and champagne.
The server was super helpful and offered oyster combos not on the menu. The space is small, but if you lurk outside before they open on Sundays at 4pm (like my bf and I did) then you will get first dibs on seats at the bar.
Sing it with me: HEA-VEN!

I think this place is way under rated. Probably because the Castro isn't known for cuisine. I love the super friendly staff, the excellent, rich warm chowder, the fantastic salad (with blue cheese), the Dungeness Crab burger.
I always leave warm, happy and well fed.
This place is small - it maybe seats 25 people.
Once we did get a seat, we were greeted with bread which they claim costs $1, but doesn't, which is good, because it's stale (think supermarket on a Sunday night stale).
But it took 20 minutes for them to come over and take our order.
So we at the bread
and waited.....
and waited....
One nice thing about Anchor is that there is a mirror over the kitchen, so that when you stare at the kitchen waiting for your food to come you can at least make sure your hair doesn't look stupid.
An hour after we sat down, the food came:
Jesus hell was it good. I got the red snapper and shrimp with get this: pesto tarter sauce! My date had the crab cakes which were also wonderful.
In sum: take out take out take out.

A small inviting spot for an intimate dinner. A must is the cioppino, its got a fabulous spice, kinda spicy-kinda sweet I think they may use roasted tomotoes in their broth, and don't forget the oily and crispy sourdough for dipping- very YUM!
The monochromatic surroundings, of the stainless steel kind, help in focusing and heightening your tastebud experience. The servers are fairly attentive but I liked that they minded their business some because I was there with my sweetie and we enjoyed the subdued atmosphere and opportunity to conversate.
Decent wines and some good mid-week price specials. Relaxing yet slightly decadent dinner rendevous!

Who says there's no good food in the Castro? Oh right, that's me. At least before I went to Anchor Oyster Bar...
The lovely Tom K. took me to Anchor Oyster Bar before we went to the Sound of Music singalong at the Castro Theater. I didn't tell him that I don't like mollusks/bivalves/whatever you want to call them - I didn't want to break his heart because he seemed excited to go to Anchor Oyster Bar! And I figured they would have other things besides oyster...and they definitely did!
We met at Anchor Oyster Bar at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Rut-ro - it doesn't open until noon! Good thing we were there right when it opened because the place was packed just a few minutes after 12. This definitely seems like the kind of place where I'd want to kick back and have a longish lunch with some friends over wine...but we had to get a move-on to make it to the singalong.
Tom K. advised me to order off the daily specials menu - can't say it was the right choice because I haven't ordered off the standard menu, but I really enjoyed my entree. I got the "crab burger" with a side of clam chowder soup (salad what?). The waiter nicely explained all of the daily specials in detail, so I knew what to expect with the crab burger...which is that it's actually more like lump crab meat mixed together in a tartar sauce on a bun - not a crab cake on a bun (which he made sure to mention since I'm sure many people expect that). The crab burger was so good - a nice, light (just the right amount of tartar sauce - not like a McDonald's Filet o' Fish) lunch. The clam chowder was also tasty. Other things on the menu of daily specials included a fish stew (which another friend devoured) and a stuffed sole (which Tom K seemed to enjoy also). Daily specials ranged from ~$14 to ~$18 (most included a choice of soup or salad). The standard menu is a bit spartan, but definitely enough for anybody who enjoys seafood - I'll have to go back for the crabcakes.
The kitchen is tiny, and they do a great job making fabulous food in a tiny space. The seating area is also tiny so I think there can be a bit of a wait...but definitely worth it.

My long distance girlfriend has yet to be wowed by any of my favorite restaurants in SF. In fact, when I took her to Avatars to tell her I love her, she vomited directly after I put it out there. Don't worry though; she came back from the bathroom 10 minutes later with a flushed face and returned the sentiment.
However, while its good that such a selective person chose me, it still bothers me that she didn't share my high regards for san tung, marnee thai, koo, tulan, etc.
We stumbled upon the Anchor Oyster Bar only because we were craving oysters. But it ended up being quite an enjoyable time all the way through.
Cozy atmosphere, knowledgeable and friendly staff, crab-rich crab cakes (rare), great wine selection, and most importantly, an outstanding variety of oysters.
Not only did I really like it, my love loved it, which makes me like it even more.
On a side note, if anybody knows a place to take a critical eater, I'm all ears. Thanks

Last night I'm waiting for my friend to show up because this is in her top five places to eat when she is in town and these two guy muffies, you know those preppie types with too much tan and starched khakis and I SWEAR TO GOD- a pink sweater tied over their shoulder, these two guy muffies looking like they just parked the yacht at Kennebunk are staring at ME, like I'm a white rhino escaped the zoo. In my own hood! Then I notice that I am the only female in the place. It is gay-maleorama. And tourist season. CRAP!
Now I love my gays, but visitors please note- women live in the Castro. No, we aren't contagious. Yes, it is not polite to stare.
Food and service was fine, good place to get oysters if feeling too lazy to go to Zuni.

I've always walked by this place and never popped in until Friday night. My hubbie and I planned on stopping in to have some oysters and drinks before heading on to Ararat for dinner. It never happened because we were seduced by the CRAZY delicious seafood here. We got an assortment of oysters and then we thought, well how about a seafood cocktail - this was HUGE and really good. Then we thought, forget it, we're eating here, forget Ararat and we had the clam chowder and shared the Cioppino. BTW, the cioppino is huge, so if just one of you is ordering it, they will make a half order, even though the menu doesn't say so.
Only four stars because the wait can be pretty long since it's so small.
Otherwise - Loved, loved, loved it. Will definitely be back.

YAAAAAY! I found a great oyster bar in SF, and I haven't even been here a full two weeks yet! I loved this place. If it were a person, I would want to marry it. It's so cute, the food is delicious, and the service was excellent, so what more could you ask for? I stuffed my face with the fresh bread, clam chowder, crab cocktail, four different types of oysters and a glass of wine to top it all off. Absolute perfection. I only deduct one tiny star because although the place is tiny (which adds to it's charm,) I would get irritated if I had to wait (which I didn't,) and also because to get to the bathroom, you have to go through the kitchen...which is a big no-no in my book. But I know this will be on my list of regular dining establishments!
