Review from Kristi C.
Every trip to Duluth deserves a detour to Superior, with a stop at this true dive bar. Expect hit or miss service, sprinkled with friendly and sometimes surly patrons.
Enduring all of this makes it worth one of the best burgers EVER and fresh cut fries like my momma used to fry up in her old fryin' pan. The Jalapeno Cheddar Burger is hot, but sooooo juicy and delicious. Only to be topped by the mouthwatering T.W.A. Whaleback...a double with bacon and BBQ sauce.
Not only is the food great, the price is easy on the pocketbook. Two beers, two burgers, an order of fries...$14 plus tip. -

Heard about this place from some buddies who went to college up here. I was told it was a dive with great burgers, and that is exactly what it is.
Compared to the twin cities the prices are astoundingly low. A third pound burger is around 3 bucks and a gigantic one pounder is under 6 bucks!
Divey, cheap and tasty, these are a few of my favorite things. -

One of the best burgers I have ever had. Great prices and atmosphere. If i could give it more stars i would.

Delicious burgers at fantastic low prices. The measuring stick for all burger places in the Twin Ports. Expect long waits and mediocre customer service. But the wait is worth it. Recommended for fans of dive bars and all things nautical.

Great burgers and solid fries in a classic dive bar, what's not to like? Seriously, the Anchor Bar is cramped, dark, crowded with bric-a-brac, and in a nondescript part of town just a few blocks off the bridge over to Duluth and Minnesota...but when the burgers are this good who cares!
First off, bring cash. Second, you are on your own to grab yourself a place to sit; it's survival of the fittest and quickest in a joint this small and crowded. Nobody is going to help you out, shove in when and where you can. And if you can, definitely sit at the bar. This ancient, warped, scratched up slab of wood (properly sharply angled back to the keep side so the odd spilled drink doesn't end up all over the patrons) looks about 100 years old and like it has some stories to tell. Same deal with the cavalcade of nautical and other paraphernalia hung, fastened and attached to any surface that isn't moving...and some that are.
The menu is simple and to the point, a couple dozen burgers with a few other sandwiches (BLT, grilled cheese, etc.) thrown in and french fries as the lone side. That's it. My first (and so far only) visit I ordered the Baconburger and fries, and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. Cooked just right, simply, cleanly. Fresh hot fries just the right thickness to get that mix of crispy crunch exterior and starchy interior. Heaven!
Food came out of the tiny (and visible from the bar) kitchen surprisingly fast. These folks know what they're doing and they do it well. So if you want a solid burger and fries, a cold beverage to wash it down, dirt cheap, in an authentic neighborhood joint, look no further. Anchor's the way! -

GREAT little spot in Superior WI. Since you were heading to Duluth anyway you may as well make a tiny detour for these awesome burgers, cheap beer and, well, cheap beer and awesome burgers.
Try the Olive Burger - it will not disappoint! -

My Favorite Burgers! Service is very slow so be prepared, and bring cash (no plastic or non local checks). Burgers are nice and juicy and fries are cut fresh and tasty. They have a range of burger from plain to cashews and jalapenos. The only thing they don't have is avocado (yep I'm from California). Good selection of beer and the giant mug is the best deal for less than $5. They have Anchor Steam bottles for $2.75 you can't find it that cheap unless you're buying it from the store. Seating is a little wacky, but remember it's a bar! Under 21 is allowed, but they must be with parent....IT IS A BAR!!

Best burger in the twin ports! Hands down! Might be my favorite greasy burger joint of all time.
this place is a tradition in the northland. They are always swamped, especially on Friday's, so get there early or be prepared to stand and wait. They have very limited seating and standing room is quite cramped too.
this place is cheap.. I mean for less than $5 you can get a burger with fries...and they have great priced beer too. not just cheap crap beer, but tasty suds from all around the world. My favorite brews come from the New Glarus Brewery and the Anchor usually has a few from that brewer.
I go for their jalepeno cheese burger. It is topped with some perfectly spicy peppers and goes down well with a nice beer.
Bring cash...no CC accepted. -

I have been eating double cashew and swiss burgers here for the past 12 years. Burgers, fresh cut fries, and a beer for about $6. Cannot beat it. It is a tavern, not a restaurant. Don't expect great service, but count on one of the best burgers you can find.
They do not accept credit cards and will I.D.Listed in: Burger Time

This places scores huge points in my book for a couple of reasons:
1) The ambiance is great! It is pretty run down, but the old character of the space is quite quaint. The Anchor Bar was recently featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive ins, and Dives as well! We scored the corner table by the front door, where there are tons of old board games to play! Slapjack was calling our names while we waited for food to arrive.
2) The food is very good and cheap! The boo and I each got a burger and fries, along with a pitcher of beer for a whopping total of $11. Cheap date if you ask me. The blue cheese burger does come drenched in sauce (refer to la photo) so if you just have a like vs love for blue cheese make sure to ask for it on the side.
The service was not great, yet I did not mind as the overall experience was so fun.
Caution: one must be 21 to enter, so definitely not a place to come with the kids!Listed in: Duluth & Superior Eats

Don't go here for the service or the social interactions. You'll see very sad situations of drunken parents with children in tow playing psuedo-slot machines (ahhhh, the spirit of the great town of Superior!). The waitresses are rode hard and put up wet - rude as the day is long. That said, THEY HAVE KILLER BURGERS AND STRONG DRINKS!! You must try the cream cheese & green olive burger - TO DIE FOR!
Bring cash or prepare to use their ATM. And be patient when you arrive, its always packed. -
Review from Joey J.
This place works on so many levels its kind of like the Sears Tower of dive bars.
From just a bar perspective, this place would be great. I ordered a "small beer" and the waitress brought me 34 ounces of Summit EPA. She noticed that this was in fact a "large" beer. She charged me the small beer price of $2.00(for about 16 ounces) instead of the large beer price of $2.75.
Throw in the fact that this place makes a pretty good burger, complete with hand-cut french fries, and you really can't go wrong here. The fries are a little bit greasy and soft, as opposed to crunchy so some people might knock the Anchor because of that and the wait staff kind of leaves you alone to your conversation instead of being in-your-face. I tend to like these two traits, but others might not I realize. The best part is however that a burger, fries and a beer costs about as much as a burger, fries and soda would at your average fast food chain.
Get here soon, before their episode of DIners, Drive-Ins and Dives airs and seating gets even harder to come by.Listed in: My Favorite Things, So You Want to Head North for…

Review from Adam S.
When I first started coming here, they had budweiser on Tap for 85 cents, pop was a dollar. That should say it all, but it really doesn't. They have an extensive bottle selection of beer, cheap mixed drinks that are strong, and dont ask for a frozen drink.
To enjoy the anchor, one must be willing to put up with different type of service, and even possibly insulted. I once asked about the super rope behind the bar and if people actually bought it, I was told to shut the F*&* up. Normally, I'd leave, but instead, everyone just laughed.
Sadly they replaced their jukebox with a digital monstrosity, I wish they kept the original juke box. One night we took over juke box and played a lot of polka for some reason, this did not sit well with the wait staff, hey, you put it in there...now I go in and hear the black eye peas or katie perry, and I weep inside.
Their menu consists of Burgers and "other grub". I've only had burgers. I get Anchor Supreme, which is delicious, but they have burger with cashews on it and it's very good. Their fries are fresh cut.
As to seating, it's usually packed and that ass hat guy fieri may have ruined it by showing up, but I either went for the bar, barber chairs, or the "library".
Just a warning, there are no windows. So if you go for lunch, expect to be blinded by the sun when you come out.Listed in: Best Burgers

A tiny little bar and burger joint, located right in Superior. This place is delicious. They make all there burgers fresh for you, and they taste immaculate! There isn't very much seating, so when this place gets busy, it gets packed! I was here once, and the power went out on us, it was funny, there was no power, but luckily for us, we had just gotten our food right before it had happened! We got to eat by candle light, and if you've been in here, you know that there is no window light, it is all man-made lights on the ceiling! Anyways we stayed and ate, why would we leave?
It is a sorta dingy place to go eat and drink, but it is totally one of those fun little whole in the wall burger and bar places that you cannot pass up.. good food, tiny place.. really, super good! -

This place rules. I spent the previous weekend in Duluth and upon arrival we headed here for a burger and a beer to start the night.
The decor of the place plays a nautical theme, which makes sense considering the namesake. When ordering a "big" beer, I assumed it meant the usual 22 oz fare, but when they say big.....they mean it. 34 ounces of goodness for $2.75. The chairs we sat in were old barber chairs, complete with levers and a swivel.
The food is pretty good. Far, far better than your average bar burger. They do some interesting variations as well. My friend had a burger with cream cheese and olives atop it. Cheap, too. I think for the three of us it was around $21.
Other perks of this bar include $2.50 pitchers on Monday night, and every night after 10 PM. Its basically an alcoholics paradise. Also, mystery shots for $1.50!!! Is it Cutty Sark? Is it paint thinner? Who knows! Where else can you spend $1.50 for such mysterious excitement? I didnt participate in this mysterious sexy experiment, but I will next time I promise.
Im actually a little envious that this place isnt in the Minneapolis area, to be honest. -

Where can you get a burger and a beer for less than $5-6? The Anchor, sir.
The Anchor has a nautical theme, complete with a life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald. Don't expect overly perky waitstaff. This is the kind of place where, if you ask "What's on tap?" the answer will be "Beer."
This place has some of the best food in Superior. Don't neglect the fries- they are amazing.Listed in: Drool-Worthy Restaurants

Chicago, IL
Went to this place after seeing it on "diners, drive-in's and dives" with my parents while visiting the northwoods. Disappointed doesn't quite get across how bad we all felt upon leaving. Sure it was cheap, but it should be, as it was the worst burger we ever had, all 3 of us agreed. I had the mushroom and swiss, parents each had the anchor burger. They were over cooked to say the least...no flavor. Meat tasted like dishwater :( Not to mention the waitress asked us each if we wanted fries or chips as though they were included in the price, which they weren't. Maybe Chicago eating has spoiled me, but do yourself a favor and stop at Hardees on tower ave instead!!

First off I don't give many 5 star reviews. However Anchor Bar earned it. I've eaten here 3 times and every time has been great. They have the best burgers I've ever had, anywhere. The fries are homemade and you get a heaping portion. The buns look and taste homemade but I assume they get them from a baker. A California burger and fries is $4.25. Perfect burgers, perfect price. Anchor Bar I love you!

We were driving around Duluth using the Yelp app on the droid, when we came across Anchor bar. We decided good burgers and cheap beer sounded good, so we drove to Superior. I'll admit, when we pulled up to the joint, I was a little scared. Just imagine 5 little asians from the cities in Superior about to head into this hole-in-the-wall joint in the middle of a port. First thought, "I hope they're not racist". Second thought, "man this place smells good", third thought, "wow this place is cheap!" Pitcher of beer $4, $3 burgers, $1 fries. We seated ourselves at one of the 5 round tables. There was only one waitress there and she was all over the restaurant, but on top of everything. When we got our Anchor burgers, it looked amazing. Fresh, hot, juicy...and thats exactly how it tasted. The fries were crispy and perfectly salted. Its definitely an experience you should try.

Always a treat. Definitely a dive bar, and maybe not a good place to go to impress a date (depending on the date of course), but I've yet to leave this place unsatisfied. Low cost helps!

I was brought here by a tour guide while in town for a few days. WHile the interior was quite fascinating (a nautical theme), the real surprise was the cheap prices. Most of the burgers cost around $3.50, and that is not a slider with a handful of frozen french fries on the side. The $3.50 buys you a yummy medium-sized burger with a large portion of freshly-made fries. The two of us bought two burger plates and a pop for seven bucks and change, a meal that would probably cost at least 13 dollars in the Seattle area (my home) I hope to go back again soon.

A double cheeseburger, hand-cut fries, and a large Sierra Nevada tap for $7. What else do you need to know? Most everything the other reviewers have said is true (even the bad), but you must make the scene at the Anchor by 12:15 or you'll be sorry.

This is the best place for burgers in the Twin Ports area. It has an old, dark, fishing/shipping theme on the inside. Once your eyes are used to the darkness, order a beer and the Anchor burger, better yet the galley buster. The fries and burgers are hand made.
