Ana Maria's serve the best tacos al pastor I've had to date.
Located in the Grand Central Market in downtown LA, there are plenty of options for Mexican food...go to Ana Maria's!! After reading the Yelp reviews, I ordered just one taco and was presented with a heaping mound of salty spicy al pastor on top of 2 corn tortillas and served with 2 extra tortillas on the side. The taco was topped with lots of fresh cilantro and diced onions. My mouth is watering just writing this review!
I can't wait to hit up Ana Maria's again (and to check out the rest of Grand Central Market)...I'm even contemplating a mid-week drive downtown despite the crazy traffic from the westside...it's that good...
Good luck finding a seat. We had to devour our food standing up. -

A friend of mine introduced me to this place for lunch. I can't say i had many experience with Gordita before, but this place made a pretty good impression for me. It is a bit on the greasy side, but if you're into fried stuff, than you wouldn't mind this too much.
It is located in a very touristy area. Great choice for a walk in the city or if you're near by the Bradbury building/Angel's flight, definitely check out this place. -

I've been a loyal customer of Tacos Tubras a Tomas at the Grand Central Market for ages. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
But today I got curious to see what goodies the other taco/burrito stands in the market were serving up. The line at Ana Maria's was just as long as Tomas, and the prices were similar, so I figured that the taste and quality would be comparable.
I ordered a half & half burrito ($5.50) with asada and pastor meats, topped off with spanish rice, refried beans, spicy salsa, cilantro and onions in a big warmed flour tortilla. I think that thing must've weighed a good 2 lbs. The service was very friendly and speedy too.
I squeezed a little lime on this bad boy and went to town... heaven. The mix of savory meats with the fluffy rice and beans, and a nice little kick from the salsa and lime was perfect. The consistency of each bite was so delicious, and the hefty amount of food really hit the spot for a late lunch. But now my legs and eyelids feel heavy, and feel myself slouching in my desk chair. I'll pretty be much useless the rest of the day thanks to this burrito induced food coma.
I am so happy that I tried Ana Maria's. Can't wait to go back. -

Man this spot is the absolute best!! The main man Jesus is a really friendly guy, I always wait and call for him to serve me. I brought some buddies wih me to try their tacos for the first time and they enjoyed them as much as me. This has been my frequent lunch spot now and wont be looking back :-)

Let me get this straight - they sell you tacos that are twice as big as a regular taco but they charge you twice as much per taco?
So kids, is this a good deal?
NO!
The same rationale is exactly why I didn't want to be an investment banker. Yea, I could've made twice as much as an investment banker than I make now as a commercial banker but I would've had to work twice as much too. So what's the appeal?
Don't get me wrong. The tacos are tasty but they aren't any better than the tacos you can get at any of the hundreds of roach coaches roaming the city. I think I'll just go buy two $1.25 tacos from a roach coach instead. -
Review from Phuong K.
My friends and I went on a mini LA adventure over the weekend and decided to get some yummy Mexican food here. There are quite a few places to choose from and most are Mexican food places (duh) that pretty much serves the same ol' thing.
Since my friends and I aren't too familiar with the Grand Central Market and the food vendors we just decided to go to the one that looked the busiest. Hence, we decided to go to Ana Marias.
I got the Asada taco and a sopes. The pile on the meat here and they give you an extra tortilla since they give you enough meat for your one taco to make two tacos. It was delish! I got the spicy red sauce, but it wasn't too spicy or anything. It was very filling. The sopes was good as well. My friends got a side of Mexican rice and that was really good as well.
I cant wait to come back and try other places here. Good thing about this place is they accept Card here also! -

I've been coming here since I was an even FATTER LITTLE CHO CHO!!!
I love most mexicans! This spot hooks it up!!!
Just a quick FYI ... Unless you are Adam Richman, and you are eating a portion enough to feed a small village in etheopia ...
Just start with ONE taco ... they pack on so much meat its not even funny ... They give you 4 BIG ASS TORTILLAS because they give you so much meat!
I get the Gordita (Fried bombness cant really describe like a party in my mouth and everyones invited kind of bomb!) And I get it stuffed with the milenesa (breaded fried steak) ... They add avocados, lettuce, tomato, and crema ...
This place is no joke and you are THAT much closer to having a heart attack!
Dont forget to get your ticket stamped so you dont have to pay for parking!
Enjoy, and dont say I didnt tell you so if you order more than 1 taco!
Just writing this review ... makes it harder to breath! -

Came here for lunch on a weekday and the line was minimal. There is no rhyme or reason on where or how you order, just walk up and someone will help you. For $2.50, you get a taco filled with meat and is actually 2 tacos, they even give you extra tortillas for this.
The service is friendly but language may be an issue. The only meat that I would get from here would be the pork. Everything else is a bit greasy and not the greatest quality. Great deal for $2.50 though! -

I've tried sopes from around la and some claim king taco is the best but this place de thrones the king! I've taken countless friend's and they all can agree this place has it all this place is friendly, efficient service and affordable prices what more can you ask for? Take a girl here get a sope and horachata walk to where they shot 500 days of summer BAM collect panties that's how good the food is.

I used to work Downtown, and what I miss most is the variety of spots where I could eat if I were willing to walk a bit. What I miss least is the drive.
Ana Maria's was my go to spot for lunch if my random lunch walk brought me toward the Central Market. Usually 2 or 3 deep at the counter with no real queues, this was almost always the busiest spot in the Market.
Today, I was downtown for a meeting nearby and went with a coworker for lunch. I don't know if it was the economy or the day of the week, but the place was not crowded at all. Also it seemed the prices crept up a bit, but at less than $10 for a huge gordita and coke, I was still happy. My coworker had 1 take, which is seriously overstuffed and served on 2 tortillas with another 2 on the side. There is so much meat that you have to either eat it with a fork or split it into two tacos. At about $2, it is a serious good deal. Toss in a soda and you have a quick meal for less than $5. -
Review from Daniel L.
I came to Ana Maria's at the Grand Central Market with fellow Yelpers Frederick G, John R, and Ching T and on a separate occasion with Lei B to check out their tacos. This Mexican food stand is located next to Roast To Go, and has a similar set up with a large steam table with plenty of rice, beans, meat and tortillas neatly compartmentalized and a simple menu posted on the signage that includes tortas, chiles rellenos, gorditas, and sopes. The atmosphere at the market is always bustling and their service is quick and efficient.
I twice tried their Lengua Taco ($2.50) which came with double tortillas and was enough for me to get full by eating just one. The person at the counter was very good about issuing an extra set of tortillas so we can spread the wealth around. The quality of the lengua was much more refined than Roast To Go, with large strips of firm and tender pieces topped off with freshly chopped onions, cilantro, and a mild green salsa that lingered with a spicy aftertaste. I highly recommend it.
Frederick G. and John R. treated me to a Milanesa Cubano Torta ($6.50). Not to take anything away from the massive torta at El Farolito or Juquila Taco Truck, but this gigantic submarine was enough to feed two to three people as it was stacked with fried veal, refried beans, thick blocks of fresh avocado, ham, jalapeno, mayo, cheese, ground beef, lettuce and tomato. The sandwich was not soggy and the bread surprisingly held everything together quite well. It was one massive sandwich so I wouldn't order it unless I have someone to share it with.
Given the price, value, and greasy goodness, all the taco stands in the Grand Central Market should not be taken for granted. I'd be interested in returning to try their other items. -

This place is smack in the middle of Grand Central Market. Grand Central Market used to be pretty sketchy, around 10 years ago, and used to be home to hundreds, if not thousands of rats and rodents. but this place has greatly improved. it's worth checking out.
If you go at lunch time there will be people all around Ana Marias, and with good reason. This place is Good!
There is no line, you don't pick a number and wait for your number to be called; no organization; just a cluster of people around the counter. Don't be shy, or you will not get any food. Be like a little piggy working your way in to the teat, or you will be left out.
The people that work there are cool. The food is good. I usually get the red sauce, which is spicy, but just the right amount of spicy.
enjoy! -

My coworkers and I come here at least once a month for the tacos. Two delicious carnitas tacos for $5. It gets even better when the amount of tortillas and meat you get comes out enough to make 4 tacos! We always feel stuffed afterward.

Great food. Good price. Awesome atmosphere. You really can't go wrong for a fun, casual lunch. -

I tend to stay away from the other animal parts - buche, sesos, lungua, cabesa, tripas and stick to chicken. The chicken tacos are really good, they cut up the chicken legs and thighs in front of you and come in large portions. 1 taco = 2 tacos.
It's funny how my total is different every time when I order the exact same thing - 2 chicken tacos con todo and a side or rice and beans.
Today it was $6.50 -
Review from Cynthia L.

This Mexican food stand is located inside the Grand Central Market. For $2.50 you get what I like to call it, "a double taco." The taco is piled with so much meat that they need to give you extra corn tortillas on the side. If you try to pick up the taco as served, it will spill all over the place, maybe even breaking the tortilla. I suggest taking a fork and spread out the meat love.
I also thought the carnitas were too greasy. I needed to pat it down with a napkin.
Their chile relleno sucked, too. It was a pitiful little green thing on a plate. Tasteless and small sized. Just stick to the tacos.
3 stars it is. -

I'm getting hungry just yelping this place. One of the best tacos in LA or anywhere in the US. This is the stand smack-dab in the center of Grand Central Market. The portions are huge - a single $2 taco comes with meat stacked high, extra tortillas and a fork (essential for eating). Get a couple so you can try out some of the different meats, but you won't be able to finish more than two (see pictures!).
I highly recommend:
Al Pastor *****
Machaca (stewed beef) *****
Vegetarian (a friend ordered this and it is surprisingly good)
Grilled Chicken
Carne Asada
Their tortas (sandwiches) and pupusas are also great.
Side note: Ana Maria is owned by Tomas who operates another stand (Tacos Tumbres a Tomas) in the GC and who split off from Roast Meats to Go years back.Listed in: Best Tacquerias

West Covina, CA
This is my favorite place to go for Mexican food in Los Angeles. Let me start off by writing that I am a San Diego native, and that since moving to the lovely greater Los Angeles area, I have been longing for a place that satisfies like so many of the Mexican eateries in San Diego. This is the closest that I have tasted.
Their tacos de Carnitas are just about as awesome as you can get. $2 (yes, two dollars) can get you a pile of carnitas on top of 4 tortillas (hopefully you all know where I am going with this). This means you get basically 2 nice thick tacos for 2 bucks, what a deal! That's not even the best part of it, though. The carnitas are really quite good. They are moist but not greasy, juicy but not fatty, and crispy but not dry. Honestly and truly, some of the best carnitas around. You also get the choice of red or green salsa with the tacos.
You must all be wondering now, "Hey, Spencer B., why only 4 stars?" Well, their Carne Asada and Al Pastor are just ok, and their Horchata is pretty average too. So, what are you waiting for, go be a good heathen, break everything that's Kosher, and get you some Carnitas! -

Thisis a great Mexican food stall at the Grand Central Market in DTLA. This is probably my favorite place to go to when I have a craving for tacos. First off, their meats (carnitas, asada, etc.) are seasoned very well plus they don't skimp on the servings. One order of tacos is like getting 2 regular size tacos (not small like other places) with whatever you want on it - I usually just have it with chopped onions, cilantro, and the chili sauce. And for just $2.50, you can't beat the price! I've also tried their burritos and tortas and they are as good as well. Definitely a must go to place for good mexican food.

MASSIVE tacos! so massive that they give you 2 extra tortillas on the side for all that excess meat! One taco here is the equivalent of 3-4 tacos anywhere else. and for $2.50.. a steal!!
even though I've been a patron here for years, I can't review anything else beside the buche tacos which is what i get here every. single. time. best buche tacos in town! in fact, I won't order buche tacos anywhere else BUT here.
it's always crowded, but service is fast and its never a problem finding a little spot at the counter .
hands-down, my fav thing about the Grand Central Market! -

Last summer, I interned across the street from the Grand Central Market and Ana Maria's. I first went here as a kid almost five years ago with the familia but then, sadly, went off to college and away from this beloved Mexican joint. But lo and behold, the food gods decided that I had been without its gorditas for too long and plopped me down at a nice job right across the street. GLORIOUS!
Ana Maria's food is GOOD. Delicious. Enough to make me ditch my coworkers attempts to eat out some place "nice" and walk myself (and my two and a half inch pumps) down that gigantic flight of stairs next to the Deloitte building get myself a gordita. And when I say gorditas, I don't mean the Taco Bell let's grab a pita bread thing and stuff nasty meat in it. I mean the solid doughy shells they physically cut the pocket into and shove the best ingredients in. The meat is always nice and juicy (I usually get the carnitas) and they put on so much meat and guac and sour cream and all the goodies that it just bursts from the seams. Add a side of Horchata and bam! My life is complete.
This place is so worth it too - $4 for a gordita + drink. That you can't beat anywhere. -

Just got back from lunch there. So...hard....to breathe...I seriously over eat every time I come here. You can have a whole meal from just two tacos. They're THAT big. I on the other hand like to go overboard and over indulged in a gordita AND a taco. All the food is pushing my stomach up into my lungs so it's harder to take a full breath in but, damn was it worth it!
It's so nice to be able to order cheap (as in price) food that is still high quality in terms of taste. The only bad thing about this is trying to get the attention of a worker so you can order (as also mentioned by David E.)
The only thing that I need for this to be a perfect meal would be a nice cold beer. Mmmm....beer. -

Tacorgasmmm, mmm oh OOH ohh!!!
Ana Maria's is hidden in the middle of Grand Central Market, where you will find a thick crowd huddled by the counter trying to catch the eye of the cook staff. Have your cash ready and place your order... Espanol or English, they'll take care of you. I usually get two tacos, which are filled with a MASSIVE amount of meat (even get extra tortillas) and very tasty. A little salsa roja, sal y limon, and I'm good to go... for less than $5!
Grand Central Market is a no-frills kind of place, and seating can be tight, but this is DEFINITELY worth coming by for a tasty plate of tacos. -

ENSENADA-STYLE FISH TACOS. oh, and the ensenada-style fish burrito.
seriously, they are amazing. i'm fairly picky about my fish tacos. they can't be runny, and the ratio of coleslaw to sauce has to be perfect. the fish has to be crispy and tender at the same time. they use shredded iceberg lettuce instead of coleslaw, but it's actually gives it some interesting texture to the rather-large taco. two of these tacos is usually enough for a full meal for myself. i sometimes dream of these tacos at night. i'm running down a long hallway and i smell the tacos. then i wake up and half of my pillow is missing and my boyfriend is sitting in the corner, crying.
the only reason they're not getting five stars is because their hot sauce/salsa is so lacking to me. it's not spicy and actually smells a bit fishy.
p.s. there are two ana maria's stalls, one that specializes in seafood and the other one in the middle of the market. this review is for the seafood one, closer to the broadway entrance, fyi. -
Review from Hannah E.
This little stand in Grand Central market had a line three deep when we walked by, so, like lemmings, we joined it. Then we jostled and yelled with the best of them. I made it up to the front eventually, and ordered over the shoulder of the guy sitting at the counter inhaling a taco with carnitas. That looked good, so I ordered one of those and one with carne asada. Dan is on a search for a torta as good as one he had at El Rey in Boulder once, so he got one of those.
Two stars for the tacos. They were, well, boring - dry, slightly overcooked meat, limp corn tortillas that fell apart at the slightest touch, and they were WAY over-cilantro'd. (I'm not a cilantro-hater at all... or at least I wasn't 'til I tasted these tacos.) I gave them to my mom to finish.
Four stars for the torta. Somehow, even though it used the same meat, I assume, it was juicy and tasty and the salsa they chose meshed perfectly and contained only a hint of cilantro.
As for the horchata? Dan said it tasted like a Yankee candle. I found that to be pretty accurate. -
Review from Marcin M.
Located inside of Grand Central Market, Ana Maria's has become one of my go-to spots for a Mexican food fix in DTLA. It's basically a stand so you walk up to the counter, and just wait to be served (which is usually quite quick).
The tacos here are gigantic and run $2.50. A single taco has enough meat on it to feed a small family so you always get an extra tortilla to manage all that run-off meat. But what I really recommend is the gordita -- basically fried dough that's stuffed with meat, beans, and whatever else your heart desires. A gordita runs $3.50 and will do the trick for lunch.
I find the meat here to be a little on the greasy end compared to other taco stands/trucks but I cut this place a break for the historical aspect of being part of Grand Central Market. I recommend it if you're looking for a quick cheap bite in DTLA. -
Review from Summy L.
Los Angeles, CA
You know the food is good when you have to battle your way to the front of the line to place your order...literally. This place has the best Gorditas around and you're going to have to fight your way to get it.
Everything is made fresh that day for consumption. A Gordita is like a taco sandwich. Instead, of a tortilla, they use this fried dough - cut in half - and stuff it with meat, beans, onions, guacamole, sour cream, and served with a slice of lemon. It's Huge! This is sooooo delicious but soooo messy.
You are warned: Use the fork and save your shirt. Use plenty of napkin!!
This place is located dead center inside Grand Central Market. Parking is across the street in one of the public paid parking structures or street if you have the luck. -

Ana Maria's located in the center of Central Market is a go to not only for me but my entire staff, we will make the 15 block trek up and down Angel's Flight to bring back the Delicious and super sized taco's and tortas. On this last occasion i made the trip alone to savor a Delicious Carnitas Torta, filled with pork, beans, avocado, tomato, lettuce, cheese and your choice of mild or hot sauces. $5.50 I add a ice cold 1/2 liter of Coke in a bottle and you have contentment for at least until you polish off the terrific creation in your hand. They do get busy during the lunch rush but the team behind the counter works very fast so you wont wait too long to enjoy your meal.

The carnitas tacos are so good! I had this six years ago and have been craving it since! On our last trip to Downtown L.A. I had my husband drive me all the way across L.A. so he could try it. ONE taco is enough to make about 4 (they give you extra tortillas). I was stuffed after "one" taco and my husband ordered two and he forced himself to finish. Im not usually big on putting a lot of sauce on my tacos but their red and green sauce is so good I could drink it! One word, yum!!!!!!

Ana Maria's is actually a stand located within the Downtown Grand Central Market. You can order for take away, eat at the counter (if there's available space), or take your food to the west end of the market, where's there's some basic tables and chairs. The environment is bare-bones, but this once bustling produce marketplace is part of old LA history.
How could anyone not like this place? The tacos are bursting in size, the tortas are filled with tender meat, and the burritos come any way you want them. And everything is dirt cheap!
The tacos de carnitas are terrific. The typical woman would struggle mightily to finish two of them, and most guys can barely put away two. If you can finish three, you're either a big dude or you have a tapeworm.
The tortas are bit easier to finish, and they include freshly sliced avocado. The chicken torta is my favorite.
I've never had the burritos, but I've seen people just stand at the counter and point to whatever ingredients they want included, and the end result is an impressive sight. Gotta try one of those if I can ever break my carnitas addiction.
A fantastic place for an inexpensive, terrific, and filling casual lunch. The guys and girls who work this counter are efficient and friendly. -

I cant believe there is not one bad review. This is not good Mexican food people its just not. Food just sitting on steam tables for hours. Al pastor that taste like its been seasoned with TANG. I'm on to you guys...I've never felt so unenthusiastic about eating a taco after the first bite. Dry as hell and the more salsa you put the worst it taste, cuz the salsas flat out suck. I heard some crazy shit being thrown out like best in LA, best in the US, al pastor heaven, and authentic. Sorry none of these are true statements. The only two statements that are true is that it is dirt cheap and they serve you a SHITLOAD. But excessive quantities and cheap prices doesnt make anything taste better.
Trust me there are way better taquerias in LA and especially in the US. Authentic? None of it, street vendors in mexico first of all dont usually buy store brand tortillas and steam them in the same plastic bag. They put em on the flat top. Second the tacos do not weight 2 kilos, they are small and tasty. A balance of flavors o yeah and authentic salsa has body to it and taste good. Funny how every salsa in grand central market taste the same smell the same and look the same. whats authentic about that especially when it sucks, carnitas morelia has a diff. sauce but they are weak as well. Third Al pastor heaven? True Al Pastor is cooked on an upright spit. the meat is thin layers that are rubbed then stacked. and usually has an onion and a pineaple on top of that. then they shave it off the spit and let it kiss the plancha for a second. the meat is almost like that of braised meat with a delicious bright slightly fruity, sweet, and acidic adobo seasoning. That doesnt even exist in Ana Marias sweet little dreams. GOODNIGHT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
And for everyone who thinks I'm just being an ass im not. I would just like to push for a better final product. Properly cooked Mexican food is delicious and people should know that. And this should not be held up as a good standard for solid mexican food. Its embarassing that every mexican joint in this bitch is all the same shit, overloaded dry low price substance material. its the 2.50 that everyone is in love with. I dare you to go eat there and truthfully see if you are excited through out eating your taco. then tell me if every bite is an explosion of delicious mexican flavors. Or is it just chew chew chew swallow drink breath breath chew chew chew swallow take a drink chew chew chew fuck finish already. cuz thats how i feel. Mexican food should be explosions of bright colorful flavors in your mind and mouth. Not a dark cloud of jaw work. -

if your in downtown LA, hungry, but ur balling on a budget i got the spot.
im talking about "ANAMARIA'S MEXICAN FOOD" in the heart of downtown LA's very own GRAND CENTRAL MARKET. i think just about everything on their menu is supersized. my personal favorite are the tacos al pastor( two is my limit). you get a regular size corn tortillas with a massive double scoop of meat. the meat is so juicy and full of flavor. its "AL PASTOR LOVERS HEAVEN" and yes you do get extra tortillas. it would be futile to attempt to eat as served. im sure there other meats are just as delicious. but for me al pastor does it all the time. they are delicious and believe it or not all this greatness for under $5. cant beat that.
this spot is a must if ur in the downtown area. -

A little while after losing our pupusa virginity and right before leaving Grand Central Market, the G/F and I decided we needed to try at least one of the few mexican/taco stands. So we decided to go to the one with the largest amount of people surrounding the counter. I just jumped right in and ordered us a taco de pollo with mild (for the G/F) salsa.
Let's just say ordering one taco is really like ordering two tacos with the amount of tortillas and meat they provide you. Our order of one taco came on a plate with two nicely sized corn tortillas covered with a very generous amount of chicken (dark meat of course), further being topped chopped onions and cilantro. Then on the side of the plate are two more folded tortillas. The G/F suggested just sharing the taco and then just using the tortillas to scoop up the rest of the meat. But I just went ahead and split the meat and toppings, making two tacos. The crazy thing was that even after dividing the portions, the meat was still bulging out the ends of each of our tacos. In retrospect, for the amount you pay ($2.50) for one taco, it is really like you paid for two...I think they should just change that on the menu...oh well. Anyways, the meat itself wasn't two greasy, but was not dry at all. It was a great way to end our lunch and overall experience at the market. -

Taking away a star. Their price has shot up a lot in a short period of time. A gordita is almost $4 now. I think it's linked to the price of corn which has also risen because of demand for corn ethanol as an alternative fuel.
