Little puffs of delicious, affordable heaven. That's what you are, An Xuyen. How you manage to stay in business when your prices are cheaper than dirt cheap ($3.99 for an amazing and good-sized curry chicken bahn mi sandwich and Vietnamese iced coffee combo) is beyond me, but Lord knows I'm thankful for it.
The french bread here is a miracle in and of itself. A light crunch, and then the soft bread inside the crust almost melts in your mouth. Irresistible! Oh, and the pastries are nothing to miss out on, either. A guava puff pastry that we had was absolutely delicious- and only $1.00. Their red velvet cupcakes were awesome, the size of my head, and only $1.75. How do you do it, An Xuyen? HOW???
The service was excellent, too- a wonderful girl behind the counter who was promt, professional, and clearly knows her stuff. What a great experience! My first time there was phenomenal and I can't wait to go back for more. -
Review from John L.
Tried the bahn mi today. Mistakenly ordered the chipotle chicken instead of the grilled lemon grass chicken. It was still very good.
The bread, the most important part was light, crispy, and yet a bit chewy. Very good. The right amount of daikon, and cilantro, and jalapenos. Fantastic deal for under $3. The combo with a vietnamese iced coffee and bahn mi for only $3.99 is awesome!
Will definitely be back to try the grilled lemon grass bahn mi and the other bakery items. -

Continuing my FoPo adventures landed me at An Xuyen. I'm not super familiar with Vietnamese food/baked good, but I'm still real interested and slowly cultivating my taste for it. Obviously, bahn mi is the first choice. I find that comparing places based on their (cultural--whether perceived or real) staples is a good way to gauge quality.
Parking lot small, with a few picnic tables outside. Inside is also pretty small. Enough options for the adventurous and beginners. Crapton of baked goods, some traditional looking American styles as well, which I found slightly unfortunate but whatever. I went with bahn mi & iced coffee deal (4 DOLLARS) which was a solid amount of food to fill me up. Counter was very nice. Went back for bbq pork, which is like 1.40 each and got a bunch of those since they were so good. Seriously I asked if they mass quantity discounts but apparently I needed to get like 50 or more. And yes, I considered it. Been back a few times and bao is still awesome.
Is it the best bahn mi or bao I've ever had? No, but the price, friendliness, and quickness bumps it up from 4 stars to 5. Check it out. -

Fu*ck yeah!! An Xuyen is my new favorite Bahn Mi spot. The bread was perfect, the price couldn't be more affordable and the filling were made with quality ingredients. I will ask for more peppers next time. I like it spicy!!

Great prices, this place smells amazing! As soon as you enter this place and take a deep breath in, you realize that everything in this place is gonna be delicious. At that point I thought to my self "what is there in here I don't want to get?" I ordered the sandwich and ice coffee drink with the pork sand. It was great, the cilantro and jalapeño was a great addition of flavor to an already nice sandwich. I really wish I'd bought more stuff before leaving!

Super cheap fresh baked goods, for instance the strawberry crepe is 99 cents.... a fun dessert after Foster Burger. Oddly, they have cases with homemade items and then below that, pre-packaged things with all the artificial colors, flavors and fillers you can possibly imagine. Not sure if those are made here at this little bakery, or somewhere else. I just can't see them yelling at each other in the back "we're out of FD&C red no. 40!" in any case, some standouts from the fresh side are the palmieri, the bacon cheese bun and the cupcakes.

Probably the best bahn mi I've had in Portland. I got two--the pate and the ground pork. The pate was rich and flavorful, but the ground pork was mediocre. It was kind of dry and monotone. The bread is five stars, and I'm probably just being picky but the pickled veggies weren't really popping with flavor. Nevertheless, for $2.50 it can not be beat. Even with a bit of a drive, it's still cheaper and more satisfying than many other sandwiches. I'll certainly return to An Xuyen to sample their other sandwich varieties and their steamed buns looked tempting too.

Cheap, delicious, and fast? Maybe the people at An Xuyen Bakery know a secret the rest of us don't.
I can get in and out in under 5 minutes, and spend a total of $3.75 on a yummy bahn mi sandwich plus a refreshing Vietnamese iced coffee. They bake the bread themselves, and they bake it perfectly! Crispity crunchy on the outside, soft and melt in your mouth delicious on the inside. Plus they offer other snacky type foods for incredibly cheap prices.
If you need baked good they've got you covered too. Bread, pastries, cookies, etc. It's all fresh and delicious. Just remember the bread goes stale very quickly, so it's best used the same day.
Totally worth a trip to Foster to get the best cheap lunch in town! -

Wow! Iced milk coffee was perfect. Not knowing much about Vietnamese cuisine, I didn't have any idea about what to expect. Well, a little, maybe.
I've read travel guides and knew from Anthony Bourdain the Vietnamese like their coffee (ca phè) with sweetened condensed milk. I've seen people order the percolated drip ca phé at restaurants. I also know the Viet are a culture that has French interminglings in architecture and cuisine. But I wasn't sure what a Vietnamese bakery would be. A French bakery run by Vietnamese? A blend of Viet and French food? Would the Viet hospitality be on display?
This place was great. Menu in English and Vietnamese. Friendly Vietnamese employees. French and Viet food and drinks. Iced coffee = French pressed black coffee, iced milk coffee = traditional sweetened condensed milk coffee. I also had a butter walnut danish crisp thing. Prices were phenomenal. $3.50 for coffee and danish. Most baked goods were $.99.
They also serve lunch sandwiches (bahn mi) and it looked like they do wedding cakes, cupcakes and the like. This place is awesome.
They take debit and have a small private lot. Would have liked to see more drink options and a tip line on the receipt. Witholding one star because it's not quite my holy grail but it's still really really good! -

This is a great little bakery that you can easily miss whizzing by on Southeast Foster. I caught a glimpse of the cartoon chef logo on the building, the guy carrying a couple of loaves of bread and a cake.
The French horns and apple tartlets and cakes are all top notch. The French influence on Vietnamese cuisine is obvious.
This is a wonderful family-run business. -

What a great place. Highly recommend - and I rarely give out 5 stars.
Don't be fooled by the name, it's more than just baked goods. At first I was a little overwhelmed by all the selection, but it was all making my mouth water and the cashier was so friendly & helpful while I scoped their display cases and menu. I ended up getting a Vietnamese iced coffee, vegetarian steam bun & green tea/black bean cake - all for $5.98.
The cafe itself is inviting and intimate. They have outdoor seating with 4 tables and just enough decoration to make it comfortable.
I can't wait to go back and try more of their items. -
Review from Kenny H.
Dig this joint! Some times I crave a iced condensed milk french coffee.... this place takes care of that craving.
My general rule of thumb for after noon lunch food within a bike ride from home is $4.50 or less.
For $2.99 I can order a sammich AND the French iced coffee. Such a win I shall come back far more often.
They know the Portland market too. Want a veggie mock meat sandwich? They have it. More a fan of Tofu? That is avail too! Tuna for the fish eating Veggie? Yep.
And all for $2.99 with the tasty coffee.
Because I was s stoked to get this lovely crusty bread yumminess & coffee for a fair price, I also decided to live-a -iittle and try the Green Tea Cake with Red Bean Filling. It was good, but I was a little thrown off by the Cool Whip cream on it instead of a frosting.
Beware, I have ordered the coffee at 3pm and could not sleep until 2am the next day. Great for folks planning a late night clubbing.
the only reason I did not give 5 stars was the Cool Whip and the over use of plastic packaging here. Since they obviously got in on the amount of vegetarians here in SE, maybe they could also consider the sustainability of non recyclable packing? -
Review from Lisa T.
God Bless the French and their colonizing little hearts. I cannot think of a better fusion of food than french baking and Asian flavors. An Xuyen is amazing.
Their bahn mi are delicious. A delicious fusion of cool cilantro and cucumber, with spicy peppers. Lemongrass pork, so good. However, the rock star was the bread. Bread is the foundation of a sandwich, overlook the need for quality at your own peril .The bread for these bahn mi was meltingly soft in the center and crackly-chewy on the outside. Perfect.
Don't forget to snag a chocolate hazelnut puff pastry, they rock the rocks.
Bonus Points: The prices, that puff pastry would cost you 4 bucks a Nuvrei, here it's a dollar!Listed in: 2011 Short List

The absolute best banh mi in Portland for $3 or less. Possibly the best at any price.
The baguettes are crispy and flaky on the outside, soft on the inside. The pickled carrots and daikon radish are crunchy and not overpowering. The cilantro and jalapeno is always fresh.
Their greatest sandwich? Lemongrass pork, hands down. And I've tried almost every sandwich on their menu. The pork is served warm, it is exceedingly tender with no gristly bits, and is so wonderfully flavorful.
The barbecue pork is my second favorite. The slices of barbecue pork are tender and just sweet enough, served cold.
Vietnamese ham is, I think, some sort of moulded ham product, thinly sliced. It's okay, but why get it when there are so much better options?
The combination includes, I believe, barbecue pork, Vietnamese ham, and pate. This is the most "classic" of the banh mi at An Xuyen, and definitely good. My third favorite, but I haven't had one since I tried the barbecue and lemongrass pork.
The pulled pork is salty, saucy, and moist. It's an accessible sandwich, but too salty. And not as flavorful as the lemongrass pork.
The shredded pork is the pulled pork's quirkier cousin. It's fairly dry, has a rough texture, and has a flavor that I just can't place. It's not as intense as the barbecue or lemongrass pork, and for that reason it always gets passed over.
If you don't eat pork, don't worry: they also have tofu (which I haven't tried yet) and lemongrass chicken. The lemongrass chicken is tasty, but not as richly flavored as the pork. So it's another good sandwich that I overlook for the best. -

Almost everytime I come home, I tell whoever that is picking me up at the airport to greet me with An Xuyen's Banh Mi Xa Xiu (BBQ Pork) with extra veggies. After being Banh Mi deprived sometimes for months, nothing hits the spot and really brings me home like this sandwhich from this shop. It is especially delicious when the bread is fresh and crispy. It's never a true Banh mi experience until your shirt is covered in crumbs after you finished your sandwhich. For any long road trips, my family has always ordered from this shop through all the years. I've even been known to request this when my PDX friends and fam comes to visit me.

I was only more recently introduced to this particular type of French/viet fusion sandwich. I am in love with them now, the flavor that the cilantro brings to the table, The spice that the Jalapeno pepper gives. I love it with Tuna. An Xuyen does this dish with great excellence, and at a whopping 2.50 for the whole thing, it would be next to impossible to find a sandwich of this proportion and this freshness for a price anywhere NEAR as cheap. And don't even get me started on the baked goods, the donught I had nearly knocked me off my feet with it's powerful goodness.
Given the price combined with the quality, this may very well be the best place to get lunch in SE. And this may very well be a place I will be frequenting for a long time. -
Review from Dana S.
We stopped by to grab lunch on our way to drop a friend off at the airport. We came for the bahn mi and wound up getting some steamed buns and sweets. The steamed buns were the best thing we ordered; all four bahn mi were just average, and not very flavorful. They were fine for lunch, but not worth coming back for.
Also, plan on taking your food to go, since the only seating options are two chairs next to a narrow ledge. -

Oh hell yes. Banh mi. Banh you. Shit, Banh All-of-us!
Let me share with you a recipe for awesomeness.
1 part perfect warm flaky baguette.
1 part succulent marinated and grilled lemongrass pork.
1 part sliced jalapeños, grated marinated carrots, fresh cilantro
1 part crazy conversation with the random girl that works the cash register
Toss together in bag and serve. Enjoy immediately (trust me, it smells so good you won't be able to wait until you get home to eat it).

Come here for a banh filled time for everyone!
Being the 40th reviewer of this fine establishment, there isn't much left to be said... My favorite is the BBQ Pork chicken sandwich with coffee combo. Only $3.50!
Other staples you definitely should try are the fermented sweet rice dessert (sounds like crap, tastes like the opposite) and the pate chaud. All of which are warm, crispy, and gooey in all the proper places. The staff will even made sure my non-ethnic (aka white) friend know what he was getting into when he decided to try some of the more "adventurous" tasting options on the menu.
The little girl manning the register? I like her. She's got some balls. If you think she's only sassy to her customers, then you haven't heard her argue with her mother in Vietnamese. It's good to hear a verbal smack-down outside of Jersey Shore for once!
Five stars. Because I can't think of any other place where one can have so much fun with banh. Word. -

An Xuyen continues to amaze me. Eating here makes me feel all funny inside. That is a good thing. Actually the highest praise I could give a place.
The Banh Mi sandwiches are outstanding. They even taste good a day after you buy them. I was the last customer of the day when I was there yesterday and the guy behind the counter (one of the owners perhaps?) gave me a free meat pie. Mmmmmmmmm meat pie.
Steam buns are crazy good. I honestly don't think I've ever had anything bad here. $7.50 got me 2 Bahn Mi sandwiches, a steam bun and a regular meat bun. How could this be a bad thing.
Go here. You will fall in love as I have.1 Previous Review: Show all »

An Xuyen Bakery
Vietnamese French Bakery
5345 SE Foster Rd.
Portland, Oregon 97206
503-788-0866
This restaurant offers fantastic Vietnamese French sandwiches, pastries and coffee. Combo sandwich and coffee is only $3.99 and there's no tax in Oregon. A barbeque pork sandwich is $2.50 and the bread is exceptional. Don't poison yourself with commercial fast-food restaurants when you can dine on real food at An Xuyen Bakery. We'll be back often and suggest you indulge your senses with their food offerings.

Review from Brad C.
The little general running the counter was on point today.
She may not even be in highschool yet but the talkative little girl at the counter has been working the front of the house at this Vietnamese bakery for years, and it shows.
"Hang up the phone, mom!" (rough translation, my vietnamese is terrible)
Her commands are met with a quick shuffle and out pops a much older woman to help with the sudden weekend rush.
Under her breath a bit I hear mumblings about her mom always chatting away on the phone when she should be working. Everything from taking orders to making suggestions on what is good comes from this little commander behind the cash register.
They easily make some of the best banh mi in the city with obvious access to great mini baguettes light and flaky on the outside with just enough crunch to kind of scrape your mouth but enough to also hold the goods in. The other offerings are solid too, including the banh bao with sausage and egg on the inside of the sweet white bun. They offer some other fillings like red bean paste but they're not as good.
This tiny storefront in inconspicuous Southeast Portland has become a regular destination on weekends for my family. Now I know I can count on the little general to make sure it is smooth and efficient trip every time. -

I ordered: 2 steam buns, a bahn mi, and a coffee.
I payed: $4.99
I thought: $4.99?!?!?!?1 ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I gave thanks to all things Vietnamese: While I ate.
I wish I would've: Jumped the counter and kissed everyone who worked there on the mouth...for a while. -

This little bakery offers up one of the best deals in town: $3 for a banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich with fresh jalapeños, cilantro, daikon, and meat) and an iced coffee. While waiting for your food from this family-owned
enterprise, you can also pick up an
assortment of delicious French and Vietnamese goods. If they suggest you try something, listen. They're great at selling as well as baking. -

I spent the first part of 2010 developing a major crush on North Portland, but lately it is all about Foster Road. After an aborted attempt to visit Foster Burger, I decided to follow some trusted Yeeps advice and went to the Slingshot Lounge instead. Once I tasted their burger served on an An Xuyen bun I was hooked.
Imagine my delight when I realized the bakery was only a couple blocks away. Now whenever I'm in the area, I pop in and purchase their amazing French bread and butter rolls.
This bakery started operating in Salem (so now you can't say 'nothing good ever came out of Salem'), but expanded to Portland in 1995. They deliver baked goods to restaurants, including their neighbors Foster Burger and Slingshot Lounge, and Asian grocery stores throughout Portland.
I've actually had a couple of odd customer service experiences at the bakery and there isn't much room to dine in, so I've always gotten food to go. On my most recent visit, the cashier was a tween and I thought, man my kids are totally slacking. Got to put my boys to work. Preferably somewhere like this so they can bring home some tasty treats. -

Review from Connie C.
Knowing there had to be good banh mi in this city, I looked to the expertise of fellow Yelpers. Thanks to a handful of reviews, I found this place. It's tucked into a strange corner on Foster and seemed a lot fancier than the hole in the wall I was expecting.
The razor wire on the fences outside and the dozen cameras that follow you in the small bakery makes you think you're part of a bank heist you didn't plan.
The lady inside, who I'm guessing is the owner because I've never not seen her there, was really nice. She was extra smiley though that might've been because I was taking pictures of all the baked goods and menu. So far we've eaten the pulled pork, chipotle chicken, bbq pork, and grilled pork with lemongrass sandwiches. All were delicious though I think the warm ones were better than the cold in terms of flavor. The chipotle chicken is more like a sriracha shredded chicken and the pulled pork was peppery. Both are really good. Those are better than the grilled pork and bbq pork ones.
Like others have said, they are meat heavy, but being a protein loving girl, I have no problem with that and I don't think it takes away from the subtle flavors of the marinated veggies. The bread is what makes this sandwich really come together. It's crispy and toasted on the exterior and soft and pillowy on the interior. I've had so many bad banh mi's that I can't bite through. It's really unappetizing.
We've always gotten the banh mi and coffee combo for $3.49. The coffee is that condensed milk french style and it's heavy but addicting.
The other random treats I've had here are yummy too. The guava cookies fall apart in your mouth and hand. They're buttery and filled with soft gooey guava jam/paste. The chocolate hazelnut butter cookie is no where near as good. Both are 50 cents each. They had samples of the coffee cake which is good. We bought a cream horn and sticky rice with sausage but have yet to eat both. The fruit tarts here would be perfect for entertaining or an individual treat and for $1 each. It's not even comparable in price to what you'd get at a normal bakery. They were pushing the sesame balls filled with mung bean that day, but we had to pass even though they looked to be perfect golden brown spheres of crispiness.
We've gotten these sandwiches before heading to the river for the day to revive our sun drenched bodies and nothing tastes better after a few hours of attempting to swim and hitting my knees against rocks. -

Oh An Xuyen. If only there were more like you in the world.
I confess, I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to banh mi, so I only ever ordered the BBQ pork. But it was good. So good. What makes it for me is the rest of the sandwich, really. Oh.. and did I mention the PRICE?! An Xuyen's banh mi are so cheap they may as well give them away, and they're not bad, either!
When I lived in PDX, I valued An Xuyen more as my neighborhood bakery than for sandwiches. Their bread is awesome and fresh. You may recognize it from such films as every Asian grocery store in town. An Xuyen makes good french bread, good 'pan' (think Texas Toast), and good pastries, too! I used to stop in for an apple turnover and bread all the time. This location carries more of a variety than, say, Fubonn, so it's worth the trip. That, and occasionally, when I dropped by, the owner's daughter would regale me with tales of the garden outside. Good luck with that green thumb, kiddo.
To sum it up: An Xuyen's one of the best bakeries for your money in town. It's a good thing they don't offer the same kind of stuff as Grand Central or there'd be seriously stiff competition! Well, okay, maybe just in my wallet. -

** I've got a mule, her name is Sal (more on this in a moment).
I've driven past so many times and have wanted to try the sandwiches... I finally stopped there on a Monday (only to find they are closed Mondays)
** 15 miles on the Erie Canal (again, hold on for this one - just a moment longer)
I had dinner with friends. We got on the topic of Banh Mi and An Xuyen came up. One friend says "You have got to go there when the young girl is working... she's nutty and spunky and precocious."
So I walk in one early evening earlier this week.
She's there - though I had to walk all the way into the store because I could not see her at first.
I am greeted so politely and hear that she is singing. Between asking for my order I hear the lyrics to Erie Canal (above) and...
** She's a good old worker and a good old pal,
** 15 miles on the Erie Canal
We have a lively discussion about the Erie Canal, as well as the Panama Canal and I moved onward to food retrieval.
As I waited for the sandwiches (both pulled pork), I looked at the variety of baked goods and was impressed.
This brilliant young saleswoman also coaxed me into two cookies (a hazelnut chocolate and a guava cookie).
As far as the sandwiches go - Simply Awesome.
The pork was done perfectly and the punch of the peppers in concert with the sweetness of the meat and veggies touched by the addition of cilantro made for one delectable taste sensation.
I'll be back (but not on Mondays). -

Sometimes you find a spot that suits you so perfectly it becomes a second kitchen. Since moving to Portland, An Xuyen is that spot for me. I pop in at every opportunity and love showing it off to visitors.
DO try the green tea cupcake if they have it. No the green tea cake is not really a substitute. DO try the sesame ball.
Caution: There is a seed drink in the cooler that is definitely good sweet and tasty but I did not enjoy the slimy seed part. -

Hands down, the best banh mi thit nguoi and all other banh mi thit combinations in this city. I've been loving this since I was in high school. A close second is Lanvin. A perfect combo of pate, vietnamese hams and head cheese, a dash of soy sauce and jalapenos... yeah this is good stuff for under 2 bucks. If they had sandwiches like these in Chicago, it would undoubtedly put Ba Le out of business for being a fraudulent pieces of foul garbage.
Oh yeah, An xuyen also makes note worthy cream puffs, sweetened breads and cake rolls. My favorite Vietnamese bakery with french influences from the colonial days. This place is highly endorsed by my family and I and yes we are all vietnamese. -

Awesome, super-cheap Banh Mi, vietnamese sandwiches. Two Buck.
Also this other great French-Asian fusion, Pate Chaud, which is like a croissant stuffed with that stuff they call pate. $.75, up from $.65 like when I first started going. And! Cookies, breads, cakes, banana in sticky rice, and a new great rice lunch, with a quarter chicken or generous pork chop. Four buck. Coconut juice and other interesting beverages available, and espresso etc. No tables, take out. Nice folks, and sometimes their sassy kid is behind the counter.Listed in: Lunch Spots near Reed

I finally found a place to replace my beloved BALE from back in the day in Hawaii. The price here is as low as Bale was when they first opened 20 years ago!
Fresh crusty french roll with all the regular Vietnamese sandwich toppings.. Daikon and carrot namasu with chinese parsley! The pate was nice and creamy.. and char sui RED? pate is not supposed to be char sui RED!
I'll pass on the pate next time. The vege-meat was ok, lots of cinnamony taste on textured soy, good substitute for vegetarians. The grilled pork was delicious. Yes, I ate three sandwiches, salad rolls and a strawberry tart. I wanted so badly to go back and eat more, but sadly I had already driven away.
Please An Xuyen, provide some Sriracha and Hoisin so we can add some extra spice! -

My favorite sandwich place in Portland. Every sandwich is made to order with tremendous care, so don't plan on a quick bite because it gets crowded at lunch and can take a while.
Try the baked goods too. The lotus cakes are wonderful. Many other stores and banh mi places buy their bread from this location.
I just wish the location was more central as the Foster-Powell neighborhood is not terriby accessible. I have to go out of my way to go here, but I am glad every time that I do. -

I don't get it guys. I go here quite frequently, too. At least once a week, but still, I don't get it.
This is more or less my average experience: All I want is a cup of coffee and a muffin, maybe a bao. It's usually about 8:15 am or so and it would be really nice if I can just get in and out. I get here, there are no customers ahead of me, and the lady is in the back room doing something. She's not coming out. I'm waiting, she's still not coming out. It's another five minutes, give or take, before she comes out. FINALLY!
It's $2.50 for a cup of Vietnamese coffee. If I throw in another buck, I can get a sandwich with it.. I just pass on the sandwich. For the same dollar, I can get a blueberry muffin they just made, or a hum bao. It's a fair deal and I know I'll be happier with the muffin or the bao than I will be with their sandwich.
Since I'm here so often, I pushed my rating to 3 stars, but really it's about 2 and half. That's just me though. I'm glad other people have a better experience with this place than I do.
