This was my boyfriend's favorite hangout. So i happened to visit this place pretty often and I like it quite a lot myself.
The veggie wet shoes and homemade ice tea are to die for! :)
Even the pancakes were pretty good.
Everything else is tasty too and the service is always attentive.
Lentils is much used here, and I totally love it.
The only problem is that you have to wait anytime you go there.
Quite a wait, but always worth it.

I love Amy's Place. I used to live right in the neighborhood and discovered this place right before I moved. Breakfast is seriously my favorite meal to go out for and this place definitely delivers.

The restaurant is small, which my fiance hates so we don't come here all the time. But we've been lucky every time and have gotten a table, although service is sometimes a bit slow.

I usually get eggs, sausage, toast and pancakes. Their pancakes are light, fluffy and just oh so good. I've never gotten a non-breakfast entree or any of their other Middle Eastern meals. I always recommend Amy's Place to people and always wanna come here!

I would've given them 1 star, but due to their cheap prices, I decided to give them 2 stars instead.

First off, it's pretty popular with the locals. My friend took us saying their food is one of the best in the neighborhood. (emphasis on the neighborhood!) So when we arrived on Sunday around brunch time, we waited (not too long) to be seated at a booth for party of 4.

Boy was I disappointed with the food. My friend's steak and eggs came cold. She asked them to microwave for heat (in desperation for warm food) but the effort was futile. My other friend has some sort of lentil wrap which came out vegan for some weird reason when she asked to take out meat (suppose to have mozz cheese). My third friend ordered dish that had lamb meat in pita, which was just okay. I had an omelet which came with 2 ingredients + cheese of my choice, potatos and english muffin. The english muffin came ALREADY buttered (my pet peeve at restaurants) and lack of jam on the table. Service was terrible and the cooking area made me question their sanitation.
To add to all this, when I received my orange juice, it was basically orange colored water. When I got to the bottom, there was orange concentration settled in a giant phlegm like orange lump. Wow, unbelievable....

I do have to admit that it was cool that there were A LOT of vegan friendly menu items, but at the same time, I don't think it's worth the wait and terrible service. However, to end on a positive note, between 4 of us, we ordered 5 dishes+ 2 drinks (OJ & coffee whiling sharing cinnamon french toast), the portions are GIGANTIC and Cheap - our total came out little above $40 bucks.

Amy's Place is fantastic. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, this place is heaven. You have menu choices! The majority of the food is mediteranean/middle eastern.

The atmosphere is cozy, you feel like you're in someone's kitchen. So if you dont like something or want something different, speak up and ask. This isn't fine dining where ettiquette rules apply. This is Buffalo's veggie-heaven where requests are totally accepted. Last time I went there, I spent almost 3 hours at a table with a friend and did not feel guilty about it whatsoever.

Something is quirky in this diner. I've only discovered this due to a good friend, and after that, I've kept coming here since then for comfort food. I dunno, the ambience isn't that great, but somehow, it feels good to eat food from a quirky place.

I usually get any of their amazing burgers (medium rare for the perfect pink and juicy bite), or the Cherita Fingers, which is honestly, the best concoction in the planet. And should I say that they have bottomless sweet tea by the pitcher?

The clientele is also diverse. You see people from all walks of life, enjoying their food. They only take cash, however, which is not a problem. I'd go there regardless. If you want a hip underground diner, then this is the place to go.

Oh, and they are definitely very vegan/vegetarian-friendly!

Everything we got was good, and the staff didnt mind us loitering and doodling on their placemats. Excellent variety, super cheap for food marketed as being "vegan." Fresh & not greasy. CHEAP COFFEE. All around awesome joint, and they played good music too!

Just had the Margie Meal for lunch. Called in the order they said 10 minutes and I arrived 8 minutes later to have it already ready for me. Now that is fast service. And it was delicious as ever in its Charbroiled chicken, fajita fries, garlic spread and hot sauce yumminess!

This place is a true staple of Buffalo goodness when it comes to locally owned restaurants. If you haven't been here yet, good, don't go. Cause its busy already and I don't need more people finding out how great it is.

I totally get how other folks think this is a 5 star place. There's a lot to love here, including their ridiculously cheap early bird breakfast specials, veg & vegan options, mismatching dishware, and diner charm. The food was good, the service was fast, and the prices were spectacular. I just can't give it the "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" because I found the home fries and pancakes a little disappointing for diner food. I like a little more crunch and flavor on my taters.  I've yet to try their lunch, but I've heard it's quite good. Maybe an update is in store...

I love a good dive restaurant as much as the next guy but you can have that dive-y feel without being filthy.  I used the bathroom, but I had to clean it first, removing urine that was all over the toilet ... on my way back to the dining area I passed the open door to the kitchen. Not only was there food all over the floor, but also grease and old disgusting pieces of cardboard.  The worst though was that there were fruitflies and regular flies not only in the kitchen, but also the bathroom and the dining area .... its sad really, because the food smelled like it could be good but if you value a CLEAN dining experience I suggest going somewhere else

I had the mac'n'cheese, which was tasty on first bite, but completely congealed and tasteless when I returned to it. I highly enjoyed my spicy lentil pita. Lettuce was fresh as were the rest of the ingredients, but it wasn't spicy at all, so boo to that.

Fun crowd, definitely the hip underground folk here, lots of young university students. Reminds me of South Philly a little bit, or UTAustin area. Great service, and friendly communal atmosphere. Great if you're lactose intolerant, and affordable to boot. This stuff wasn't the tastiest around, but it's great that all of the food here can be adjusted for dietary restrictions.

A gem in University Heights. The food is quirky, I guess, but unexpectedly I've found it's a great place to take picky eaters - there's something for everyone on the varied, lengthy menu. Low prices, quick service and very tasty food for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Expect to wait for a table at peak brunch times, or just come at an off time and enjoy your meal at your own pace. Many on the waitstaff have been working there for years and it's a friendly place to visit over and over.

Amy's Place left something to be desired. The menu looked good and as far as hole in the wall joints, it was still pretty dirty. We decided to try it out anyway as it was nearby and it had good reviews. Our service SUCKED. She forgot our drinks and had an attitude when I had questions regarding menu items. I settled for the falafel sandwich and the first few bites didn't have any of the 'house dressing' in it. As I had suspected, it was all in the bottom. My boyfriend ordered the Lentil Berry sandwich which looked more or less like a bean burrito. It was pretty good but I don't know if I would buy it for the price. They didn't refill our water even though they forgot our drinks. The food came out fast and I couldn't be happier to not go again. BOO Amy's Place!

I'd rather go to Lake Effect across the street...or Falafel Bar.

We like this place and if we were from the area we would probably go back for breakfast. Food for the money was very good

Amy's Place is a complete blink-and-you'll-miss-it type place.

However, if you do keep your eyes open long enough to see it, you will not regret going in and eating here!

I came here while visiting B-Lo on the recomendation of my friend who I was crashing with.  I was beyond pleasently suprised with the the experience we had here.

The first thing I saw when I walked in is a huge sign behind the counter declaring 'Be Nice or Leave!'  I thought that was pretty awesome.

Decor wise they are very much a diner, formica booths and checkerd floors.  Its cliche but what did you really expect???

The menu at first appears to be strictly vegetarian/vegan and closer inspection will reveal this is not the case.  Theres so much to choose from its next to impossible to choose one thing.  I ended up with a spinach salad and Lebanese burger (hummus, sprouts, onions and tomatoes on it) and all were delightfully devine.   Then for dessert the whole table spilt some vegan chocolate chip cookies which were delectable, and since they were vegan and I am allergic to dairy they got along with my insides very well.

Overall, Amy's is a cute and quiant place with a funky kind of artistic edge.  Next time I'm in town I'll defintiely be back!!

    I want to give this place a 4 or 5-star review, I really do, but I can't.

It's a shame because it has a lot of things going for it. Awesome music selection! They played Regina Spektor and Kimya Dawson. I mean how awesome is that!? If only they played some upbeat Sondre Lerche songs then I would have been in heaven. And they probably could have since they had a Dan in Real Life poster on the wall.

Our server was rockin. She was really courteous and she definitely knew the menu and was able to describe it to me well. What she didn't describe to me was that the pita bread was old and gross. Yeah, I ordered the chicken souvlaka, and it was bleh. Two-stars worthy. My boyfriend ordered the lentil sandwich, and it was much better. The chips were gross too. Way too salty!

Would I come here again? Probably...but not anytime soon. I'm really hoping to give this place a better review, but based on what I ate, it wouldn't be fair.

This used to be one of my absolute favorite places to come for a greasy breakfast, or a veggie-friendly lunch or dinner.  Their portions are large enough to share with a friend, but their prices are inexpensive enough to feel guiltless about ordering more than you need or even want.

I recently went back to Amy's Place to find that the staff was friendlier than I remembered.  Nostalgia creeped in and kissed me on the cheek as I pictured a younger version of myself, sitting in a booth, nursing a hangover with diet coke and an egg sandwich with veggie "sizzle strips."

Amy's Place is a staple of University Heights and will always have a place in my heart even if I only get a chance to eat there once every three years.

Om nom nom! Local comfort food joint, mellow vibe. If you want a cheap vegetarian meal, look near an establishment of higher learning.

Portions appear to be designed to feed a broke student for a day. Busy service, but attentive. Special dietary needs respected. A request placed by one of my party was caught by the waitress on her way to the table, the correction was swift.

Vegetarians should check out the back page for the employee creations, they may be the best bets. Chicken & fish were on the specials board, but not a focus on the regular menu.  Skip the lentil soup, it's a starchy mess with overcooked pasta.  French fries are similarly mediocre. The rest of the meal was aces.

This place rocks the vegetarian scene...

Hubby was hungry that morning, and got the french toast and the shawarma (sp?). I thought his french toast was rubbery. The shawarma was very good.

I got a buckwheat pancake, and it was nasty. Also tried their hummus appetizer. The hummus was good, although they served me cold pita (the menu said it was served with warm, grilled pita).

They definitely always have a long line, so be prepared to wait.

Also, the stools at the bar are sooooo uncomfortable!!!! Wait for a table!!!!

    Undecided if I will return....

Hands down, my favorite place in the Buffalo area to take people for brunch, especially out-of-towners who think it's all chain restaurants and strip malls. There's really nothing better than a spot that combines old-school diner coffee with an up-to-the-minute indie rock soundtrack, greasy tables with vegan-friendly food, and lentils with curly fries. And the service, while usually slow, is usually very friendly. Thanks, Amy's Place, for providing a Sunday getaway from suburban mediocrity.

I went here with two friends after work the other day, as I had heard many great reviews from people about this place.  It really is a hole in the wall restaurant, but the food is fantastic.  We split the Wet Shoes, which is their term for Chili-Cheese Fries.  The cheese was actual melted shredded cheddar cheese, and not the questionable neon orange stuff you get from other places.

For my meal, I got the Margie Meal, which is a pita wrap filled with grilled chicken, tomatoes, zesty french fries, and mayo.  It was delicious.  The wrap itself was okay, and it started to fall apart, so I just ended up nibbling on it, while eating out the insides with a fork.  We all enjoyed the food very much.

The staff is very, very friendly.  The menu has many options, and it's really easy to find something for everybody including more vegetarian and vegan options than I've seen at most other restaurants.  People complain about it being over crowded, but we went during the summer and during the mid afternoon (4pm), so it was pretty dead.

It's cash only, but the meals are pretty cheap, and I highly recommend.

So, I went with a friend for lunch today with a forewarning that it is a really grungy diner.  However, after walking in and seating ourselves... I completely disagree... it was just as clean as most restaurants I eat in regularly..

I ordered the veggie mexican burger (has veggie chili on top and provolone cheese) and my friend got the chicken fajita wrap.  Both were super good.  Will definitely be going back!!!

For a couple years, I visited Amy's Place for breakfast or lunch at least once a week. Now that I no longer live in Buffalo, I have dreams about this place.

I was always surprised by the diversity of folks that come into Amy's. It's one of the gems of Buffalo. Everyone I know has their favorite dish. I teeter between the veggie wet shoes- a heap of lentils, vegetables, cheese, sour cream and salsa over curly french fries- or the lentil berry sandwich. These are my go-to's, but I know for a fact that the burgers, omelets, burritos, and specialty dishes are all great too.

This no-frills diner sums up Buffalo to me. They're usually playing Ani Difranco on someone's ipod in the background and your coffee cup is never empty. Word to the wise: wait to be seated.

    "Amy, meet Alison"

    *****************************************

Alison Krauss, please meet Amy Winehouse.  Amy, please meet Alison.  When you're at Amy's Place, you and Alison are closer than you think.

There are dive bars. Can there be dive restauarants?  Imagine walking into a greasy spoon with Alison Krauss singing "Baby, Baby, Now That I Found You" on the sound system.  Only the clientele didn't look like uber- hip bluegrass aficionados, aka Alison Kraus types.  The place was more like the after party post-Amy Winehouse concert.  But without the self-destructive behavior.  There were tats in places I didn't know could be tatted and piercings in body parts that . . .   Well, you get the idea.

In keeping with the sign on the wall that says, "Be Nice or Leave," I'll be delicate.  If you are at all like the Emma Pillsbury character from Glee (that's the red-headed guidance counselor germaphobe), do not, I repeat, do not look on the floor behind the counter.  There were no critters or anything, but I don't think it had been swept in a while much less mopped.  Doesn't instill a lot of confidence in what's behind the kitchen doors.

Our server, however, did cheerfully offer to make me a patty melt (see explanation in my Federal House review) when I said I didn't see it on the menu.  And a delicious patty melt it was.  The onions were grilled to perfection, and the rye was fresh, fresh, fresh.  My son's plate of shwarma and eggs was so huge that he couldn't even think about dinner until 8:00 that night.  Darling wife was agnostic about her shwarma wrap, but hey, Amy's doesn't advertise itself as a gyro establishment.

Would I go back?  Sure.  Amy's captures that upper-Elwmood strip vibe of Seattle grunge transplanted in Buffalo.  Or what if Buffalo had it first?  Please don't tell Courtney Love.

I am a fan of their lentil-berry sandwich. I have found nothing like it anywhere else!

Everything else however seems pretty standard as far as food goes. The place is kind of a dive-restaurant as one person described it in a review below. But, I know that is why half my friends love this place. No frills!

But, seriously, it's all about the lentil-berries!!!! It's this sandwich alone that I give this place a 4 and not a 3. I would almost consider giving it a 5 for this sandwich alone, but that would be over doing it. Order a whole, asking for half for eat in and half to go. IT'S A HUGE ASS SAMMY WRAP!!

I'm giving this wonderful place a 4 even though my food was more like a 2 or 3. I could see how people could love this place... it's cute, it's innovative, it's family owned and the service is phenomenal. It's not my style, but I am up-grading it because I think that most people would absolutely love it. I've never been into that cool college atmosphere, or people making innovative and crazy dishes... I like the traditional staples done well and I like them a lot. But I think visiting Amy's Place is well worth a few hours of your time because you may find that you love it.

Also, if you're into vegetarian food or fusion food or cheap but innovative food, this is the place for you. A lot of the menu is based around a modern-day, socially-conscious vegetarian style, but with a little Buffalonian thrown in there, and a little Americanized Middle Eastern or Greek or Mediterranean food too. I can imagine that most of the people I went to college with would have killed/died/committed high treason to have a place of this sort within the vicinity of our campus, so UB South Campus students are lucky!

Now all they need is to put some fish on the menu, and if it's a certain type of fish, they can call the platter: "Amy's Plaice." Bad joke.

We had brunch here last Sunday and we're not disappointed. The food was pretty durn good even if their breakfast menu lacks a little in variety. The pancakes were great and I appreciate the seitan/tofu options in place of bacon/sausage.

Prices are excellent and service is pretty fast. Might be hard to figure out who your server is but they are all rather helpful. They don't ever give you a bill. You are just supposed to know to go up to the counter when you are done.

    CASH ONLY

They were a little weird about my baby, feeling like her high chair was in the way when it seemed like oodles of room for folks to get by...

My type of place though and makes me miss California.

Amy's Place is great for what it is--a college diner. I would have killed for a restaurant like this around my university: vegetarian, cheap, and a friendly atmosphere that fosters rather than discourages young hooligans. Hole-in-the-wall but obviously well-managed, potential diners should not be warded off by the warnings of the below reviewers.

I gave it a 3 though because for non-university diners, the meal itself was only OK. The vegetarian chili was missing a savory component, perhaps stock, and as a result was sweet and hot but not hearty like a chili should be. The falafel in the sandwich was better than many I have had before, but tomatoes should not be served in the winter! They were awful! Overall, the sandwich was over-sauced and the flatbread was not very good, so I was disappointed. I tried the lentil berry sandwich as well, which was over-cheesed and not so flavorful.

I was extremely pleased by the service, speed, and options but it seems like a few kinks could be worked out to make Amy's an essential spot for  visitors outside of the UB community.

Amy's Place isn't bad but I think their food is a bit overrated.  I went here because of the Yelp reviews and even ordered what people were raving about but maybe I went in with such high expectations.

The food wasn't bad.  In fact, I enjoyed my meal but it's not a restaurant I'd want to visit specifically had I moved out of Buffalo.  I do like the atmosphere as they've done a great job of preserving what they had that made them known.  It's a shame that they only take cash.

This place is a little cramped, but not in a very annoying way. It is a pretty awesome post-grunge kind of cafe with a cool atmosphere.

I love the vegan options here. I got a Biff Sandwich which was barbecue seitan and some other yummyness on bread. It was great. I also got the veggie chilli which was very light but very good and spiced well. The three people I went with all loved everything they got and were raving about it afterward.

If I am ever in Buffalo again, I'm coming back!

This place was delicious, oh my gosh! It doesn't matter if you eat meat or don't, there's something here for everyone. Best of all, it's dirt cheap! I ate here twice for $12 TOTAL. And I had to-go boxes both times. Yuuuum.

I can highly recommend the lentils, home fries, and toast breakfast. Highly, highly recommend. The lentils are perfect and the broccoli was sweet and slightly crunchy while the home fries... okay, I can't describe them any other way besides heavenly. In fact my dinner later on the same day was an order of the home fries with a side of vegan mac n' cheeeeez. If you're looking for a great vegan mac n' cheese, look no further! Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

Couple this with great service and adorable thrifted plates and mugs, and you have all the makings of a cute little community diner. Packed for breakfast, packed for dinner, I can only imagine how busy it gets at lunch!

Just remember to bring cash or a debit card to snag cash from the ATM machine in the back - they do not take cards at the register!

Who knew there were cool people and places hiding out in Buffalo? This is a wicked little diner that seems homey and community oriented in a way that opposes my image of western New York as an endless car paradise boxed in by greasy fastfood and chain stores.

Amy's has a bare bones atmosphere to it with small wooden furniture that's even a tad bit uncomfortable and doodle art sketches on the walls that look like they belong in a college kid's dorm room. It was a little cool in there on a freezing cold day, but we came to eat and eat we did.

I had a lentil-wheatberry spicy pita. It was neither spicy nor in a pita (came in a tortilla which I prefer) but it was warm, filling, tasty and vegetarian-friendly. I ordered the larger version of this item and was warned of its size. They put half of it in a hoagie take-out bag and the other half was the size of my plate.

My companions ordered the 'Veggie Wet Shoes'(curly fries covered with lentils, tomatos and melted cheddar) at the servers suggestion and a BLT. The only person who was disappointed was the meat-eater. You know what they say: When in Rome, eat lentils.

I get the feeling Amy's would be all vegetarian much like Sadie's Diner in Toronto if it were not for a lack of willing clientele.

I will be back to eat pancakes.

If I had to pick one thing i missed most about living in Buffalo, it would be Amy's Place. I wish there was an option to give more than 5 stars because they deserve a million.  Easily the most vegetarian/vegan friendly place in Buffalo. The staff is also the nicest group of people and i want to give them all hugs every time i go in there.

I could go on forever about how incredible this place is.  I used to live above it and would go there several times a week and never got sick of their food.  Veggie Wet Shoes is by far my favorite thing on the menu, with the Biff Sandwich and vegan Margie Meal close behind. They also have a $2 early bird breakfast special with 2 eggs (or lentils for a vegan option), toast, and homefries.  You can't beat that!

Amy's Place has great food, and great food knows no regional boundary. The only reason it might get lesser reviews in a larger city is that there'd probably be considerable wait-time for tables.

Quite frankly, we're the ones who truly benefit from Amy's location, so consider US lucky, not the owners. There isn't a single spot in NYC that offers great food at that pricepoint. Amy's was my go-to spot during college and I spent many mornings there after putting myself through a brutal all-nighter.
