Great service, delectable selections, and a homey atmosphere.
I recommend an olive roll with cheddar! -

I so WANT Amy's to be wonderful, and keep hoping the service, cleanliness and baked goods will improve, but sadly each time I go I get kicked back by the gummy surfaces and "dirty dishcloth" smell combined with counter staff incredibly slow, with an oddly, superior attitude. This could be forgiven if their goods were more reasonably priced and they occasionally tried new things--cornbread or corn muffins, yummy doughnuts (gourmet ones like at Dean & Deluca can be stellar), and more attractive furniture and decor, but apart from the river view, it is very ordinary--too-sweet stale cookies, overpriced coffee., boring cakes !

LOVE!
Grilled Cheese and homemade Pizza is what my husband and I had for lunch today on our roadtrip through VT. Along with a fresh unsweetened iced tea. $14 for it all, too! YAY!
Everything was delish, including the free pickles & olives they offer when you pick up your food.
Sit in the back with a great view of the mountains and the river. Cant wait to visit again and try some of their baked goods! -

YUUUUUM! I ordered a veggie sandwich and it was delicious. The bread was so good and soft, it made me regret not buying a loaf to take home.
I did buy a "personal pie" to take home though, berry rhubarb, and it was also totally amazing. I intended to share it with friends but I just selfishly ate it all myself. -

Brattleboro, VT
O.k., I 'fess! I just broke my 4+ year boycott of Amy's Bakery Arts Café. Recently I had friends from the L.A. and Seattle areas visiting me in Brattleboro. It was a beautiful sunny day and we were walking downtown.
Now, anyone who reads my Yelps knows I have found many Brattleboro, Vermont businesses frequently lacking in friendly, savvy business practices and public relations. In fact, I was once told, "If you want Southern hospitality, go down South." But I try to be fair and give accolades when accolades are warranted in all my Yelps (wherever I go) and I never dissuade any visitor to Brattleboro from patronizing any Brattleboro business just because I have decided to not financially support their rudeness or indifference.
So when my visitors and my famished self found the other restaurants on Main Street closed at 3 p.m., we passed Amy's. I knew that, despite the acute pain it causes me to know I dropped thousands of dollars in her cash register over five years, the shop still has a nice view of the Connecticut River and her lunches are often pretty tasty. So, I (yes, I said I) suggested that we go in. I wanted to see what my friends' independent impressions were.
Upon entering, I silently noted that the front counter did not appear as unclean as it did when I last visited in 2008. I was relieved. We all ordered pretty safe fare; salads and a pesto, tomato, and mozzarella sandwiches on baguette (after all pesto is pesto even if spread on a shiny hard poly-composite resin surface) but did not risk a stale cake from the case. But the flies, oh the flies!! The view and pesto could not make up for all the flies that continued to land on our lunches and in our hair (or whatever remains of it). And....in addition to black flies mating on our lunches, guess what? Despite the swarm of flies, the woman behind the counter who waited on us was also very rude and curt to my friends! Hey, I tried. I even dropped $38.00 doing so. Maybe in four years (or forty-four) I will pop in again. But I will check out the seating area for flies before I order.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Stopped on a whim on the drive to Burlington. And so happy we did! After an eccentric old woman on line in front of us told us what to order (along with her life story), we grabbed a great table in back overlooking whatever river that is that runs through town. The bread is amazing. Delicious crust and a chewy center. The soup is delicious. And for dessert we had an eclair (not something i would ever order, but that old lady said they only make them on Fridays and we had to try it). It was, as expected, awesome. I wish this bakery was across the street from my house so i could go all the time and order whatever that nutty lady told me to.

Super Yummy...went for lunch and had the Vermont Croque Monsieur. The bread is so awesome and airy. Loved the pickels too and I not a HUGE fan of pickels but dang! They were good.
Don't hesitate, go here for lunch. -

Amy's was my go to dessert/lunch spot when I was in town during my grad school classes.
I loved everything I got here and I remember most of it even though I had it all back in 2008...thats legit how good the stuff was.
My favorite dessert there was their flourless chocolate torte...OMG amazing....rich, cocoa-y and smooth deliicousness. I also had a really good chocolate peanut butter cookie and lots of really yummy ice cream (which I think is Barts!!!)
Every time I ate lunch, there I had the delicious olive tapenade, mozzarella, and pesto sandwich...my mouth waters reminiscing about it!
For all the people moaning about the service...have you lived in Vermont at all?? The pace of life is much slower and is actually pretty relaxing so the sooner you get used to that the happier you will be at Amy's!
Also, why would you get coffee here???? Go across the street to Mocha Joes! (duh!) -

I stopped in here when Jesse and I were walking around Brattleboro in between record shopping to grab some sort of cool beverage for us. I first used the bathroom (nice and clean!) and got in line. I couldn't resist the pretty cupcakes staring back at me while I was waiting to order, and I ended up getting a chocolate cupcake for me, and a chocolate raspberry cupcake for Jesse. The cupcakes were stellar-great, creamy butter cream frosting, atop a perfectly cakey cupcake base. All around a solid cupcake. Definitely freshly made, and they were buy one get one free that day, too. I ordered fresh lemonades for us, and the lemonade was the perfect combination of sweet and sour and refreshing.
The atmosphere was nice, and the service was friendly. I'd definitely come back if I wanted a beverage, or even lunch. They serve pizza, sandwiches, bagels, and an array of sweet and savory pastries. -

Local art, a wonderful selection of baked goods (though the cookies look dry), sandwiches, delicious pizza (especially the chewy, crunchy crust), and good coffee are part of the fixings of this small town, earthy cafe. Prices were moderate-high for a small town; they take credit cards, which is nice. And, parking was easy. It also has an incredible view of a mountain.
The downsides?
We visited on a Saturday around 2:30, at a time when you would think it would be less crowded. It was packed. Service (up front at the register where you order) was not done with a smile.
The acoustics in Amy's are horrible. Screaming kids (running around), people talking loudly, and the bakery (who had heated up meals) yelled to let people know their food was ready.
It was so loud, and there were so many people irritatedly waiting for a table that I felt physically uncomfortable. I kept thinking, "I want to be anywhere else but here." Not the best thoughts while you're supposed to be enjoying lunch. ;)
There was a newspaper on our table, labeled Amy's, and some customer came over as we were sitting at our table, about to look at it, and just swiped it off the table... WTF? ...
I'm used to busy and lively like in Manhattan or calm and friendly like in San Francisco, but I'm not used to people getting in my space and taking things from it! ;)
Amy's Bakery Arts Cafe looks on the outside like a good place to go (esp. if you work around town), but, inside, at least while we were there, it was hectic, noisy and not friendly. I would not recommend it. -

Oh my goodness, how does anyone decide on just one pastry in this place?! Or even a sandwich for that matter. Everything looks incredible! And it is. Everything that I've gotten, that is.
I asked two women in town, working in different stores, and both of them said without hesitation go to Amy's. I had been to Brattleboro a while back, but couldn't remember where I got that awesome sandwich and sat with a gorgeous view. As soon as I walked in, I knew I was there.
This last time I got the grilled cheese with VT cheddar and mozzarella surrounding delicious tomato on fresh baked bread. Wow! It had a clever name, but now I have forgotten.
It can be a little hard to find a table at lunch time, but stick it out, and you will. The seating area has a nice view, and big windows. The art on the walls is by local artists, and is VT themed, always fun.
They messed up our order (and realized it), apologized, fixed it, and gave us an extra sandwich on the house, all in the course of about 6 minutes. Very kind. These things happen, especially when busy. It's all about how you handle them, and they did a great job.
Also, pastries there were incredible. I think that was the best hamentaschen I have ever had, including all those homemade ones I ate as a kid. Well done, guys! -

Amy's has a nice selection of baked goods and, I, for one, quite like their baguettes. The seasonal pies are also worth a try.
In terms of lunch, this place has a respectable and large Cobb Salad that I always order, despite vowing to try something else as I wait in line. I've had various soups and these, too, are definitely above average.
One of the best places for a quick lunch or grab bread in downtown Brattleboro. -

Brattleboro, VT
The only place withing 50 miles of Brattleboro that makes legitimate French style baguettes and good pastries. It would be a 5-star place if the coffee were just a little better.
Excellent food overall though... I don't know what I would do without Amy's.
I think the less-than enthusiastic reviews here have to do with the "service" or it being "too crowded." All that means to me is that some people don't like hippies serving them, and it's crowded because, well, it is awesome. Oh god, I forgot about the day-old small apple pies: better than same-day, only $3.50 and... unbelievably good. -

I eat here at least twice a week. A whole sandwich is kinda big so I get the half sandwich plus a dessert. Turkey and chicken salad sandwiches are my favorites. On Friday they have cream puffs, they're the best!
For others to criticize Amys because it's crowded is silly - the line always moves quickly and if it's packed then get your lunch to go and enjoy it in Pliny Park a block away. -

Brattleboro, VT
Definitely meh. It's expensive, the baked goods tend towards the dry and the coffee is average at best. It's always busy simply because there aren't a whole lot of options for a sandwich and a coffee in this town.
The sandwiches are all bread with little filling and cost far too much for what you get.
The bread, especially the baguettes and the sourdough, is quite good, though, although it's easier to buy it in the co-op. -
Review from Karen D.
They serve a great sandwich, even though t's a bit on the pricey side. My portabella sandwich cost about $10.00 because I added bacon, but I have to admit it was delicious and I would get it again. The back room has a view of the mountains.

I've tried a lot of items on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. The baked goods are also great. The food is a little to pricey to eat there regularly, but I always like what I get. The staff is also incredibly nice, which is a huge plus.
I would definitely suggest checking Amy's out for lunch. It's one of the better lunch places in Brattleboro. -

Excellent service and the best home baked cookies every, plus I recomend the personal size fruit pies.
It is a must stop for anyone visiting Brattleboro and you can relax at the back overlooking the CT river. -

Brattleboro, VT
This place is worth what you pay. The goodies as I like ot call them are divine. Gingerbread cupcakes, and mini pie so good and so freshly baked. They also have wonderful soups, and bread. They always have some day old bread for sale as well. Everything is freshly made for you and you can even see them making it as they go. Fantastic food and a great place for some Hot chai or a cup of coffee.
On ocassion though the lemonade was far too tart. Add a little ore water OK guys. -

Overprices and overrated, the only reason they hop the way they do is because the other decent lunchtime bakeries folded. Don't be fooled by the yuppie personae, it's all still sysco product yo. They do get props for regularly donating bread to the weekly free meal at the Common Ground.

I wasn't into this place at all. It is a coffee shop/bakery, so it has that feel to it (which wasn't a good thing for me). It was a little too.....hippie for me.
The mozzarella, pesto & tomato sandwich was just ok. The chili was terrible. The coffee & chai tea were average. The employees were not friendly at all.
The two saving graces for this place for me was the great view of the Connecticut River, and the fantastic Snickerdoodle cookie for dessert. -

Had a nice cookie and juice while reading my book here. It has a nice view out the back.

I think some of the food is a little pricey for what you're going to get - but I do think that the absolute best deal here is also the most delicious. Get a freshly baked sourdough roll and a hunk of sharp cheddar cheese. Only a couple bucks and very satisfying.

Review from Mark H.
I have tried a few of the sweets, and they have been utterly and completely delicious. But, [drum roll] read on for the greatest source of pleasure from Amy's.....
My DEFINITE RECOMMENDATION is the fresh mozzarella, roma tomato, pesto, olive tapenade sandwich. It is one of the freshest celebrations of food that I have ever eaten (this sandwich, that is). The mozzarella tastes like it was made there. The roma tomatoes have been roasted in their ovens and then chilled. The tapenade is their own, the baguette (American-style: wider and bigger than a typical French specimen) is fresh. I couldn't get enough of this sandwich, and I'm even dreaming of it now from NYC. It's so juicy, the tomatoes and mozzarella release their juices when you bite into this sometimes unmanageable sandwich. But that seems to only extend the pleasure, because then you feel like you have more to eat, as a bonus with your fork. And there's free water in the back. (Helpful hint: Be sure to check your teeth in the mirror before you leave! You know, bits of basil, olive tapenade...)
The only "con" to this place, is that sometimes it's not open when I want it to be. I forget the hours, but I thought that perhaps they were a little screwy. More than once I craved this mozz. sandwich and was disappointed when they were not open. :(
But that's a small price to pay for near-perfection. Sit in the back and look out the window, over the river to NH. Thanks Amy's, for doing what you do! -

My mom and I were starving when we pulled into Brattleboro. I saw Amy's on the main drag, I think it is actually on Main, anyway...pulled over and went in. The back part of the restaurant looks into the mountains and river-it's an amazing view, but we chose to eat outside. I had the avocado salad that was stuffed with chicken salad (you could choose what you wanted in the avocado). It came with mixed greens and a piece of bread. It was really good. My mom got their soup of the day which was lima bean/turkey kielbasa. It looked good and she talked about it the rest of the trip, so it must have been. We almost got the pumpkin pie, but I refrained. We did get some day old cookies though, and munched on those throughout the trip. Prices are a little on the high side, especially for a small town, and the art was outrageously priced and not good. Don't know if that's the norm.

Brattleboro, VT
We had Amy's do our wedding cake and it was delicious and amazing. They gave us samples of the different types of cakes, frostings, and fillings all of which were tasty. We decided on vanilla buttercream and chocolate cake, and it was delicious. I've never had any of their food, since we always seem to get sweets, but based off the other yelp comments, I'm going to have to change that.

A fun cafe with excellent baked goods and espresso drinks! Also a good option for lunch! Their menu is unique and the quality of their food is top notch. It is loud and sometimes crowded but a great place to bring kids for a snack or to meet a friend for lunch and coffee.
