I went to the keys without firm plans, although I had always wanted to scuba. The visitor's center sent me to Amoray for a room, and then I realized that they are a full dive shop.
After inquiring about dive certification they set me up with Dan as an instructor. The first day went so well, I added on a second day. I studied at night and took the final exam after the dives and voila! Thanks to Dan's patience and thoroughness, I'm now an open water diver!
I also like what great care they take with their boat and gear.
The rooms were nice - I started out with a little cabin and upgraded so I would have a kitchenette and view of the water. -

I have mixed feelings about this Dive shop/resort, on one hand it is very well organized, friendly staff, helpful, but on the other side, they dont care too much to mix n match different certification levels even if you asked, I have been there with them and if they have divers who are about to be certified and you have more advanced divers (my case) theyll just take you to shallow waters so the newbies can do their thing, this really annoys me, I would really rather like to know in advance the depth and kind of place we are going, it seems they just want to take the boat out and charge you.
I also stayed last time at one of their rooms, it was an average room, clean, but a little bit pricey for the amenities and quality. The other thing that happened to me was that although I asked in advance if there was Wi-Fi at the hotel, and they say yes, there was no coverage in my room, I guess they didnt lie, just didnt tell me the whole truth...ohh wait, that is lie right?
I would recommend this place if you are new to diving, but if you are already certified and new ask for a guided dive, or they just let you do your thing even if you dont have experience, if you are advanced diver avoid this place. -

This is a... call it... quaint keys dive resort. Everyone I met, was there for the cheap rooms and daily dive trips. The rooms are older; the pool used mostly for dive classes. The office is - you guessed it - a dive shop. The staff was friendly and helpful and the dive crew was awesome. I just loved waking up, walking 20 feet, and loading my dive gear right on the boat, then right off afterwards. The dive captain made sure you knew you were in the keys by pumping the Bob Marley and Bruddah Iz tunes in the morning before the trip. The captain and crew were the best part of the stay. I will definitely be back for more dives and even classes.
Surprise! Get ready for a creative take on a traditional song on the ride home.
Now for the pet policy review, which should be considered separately.
This hotel is newly dog friendly. So, this is their first experience with traveling pets and hopefully a good one for them too. I brought my two (well traveled) dogs. I spoke on the phone to book and the staff reviewed the rules with me, so I didn't read over the entire hotel pet policy online. Definitely my fault.
The usual rules apply: always on a leash, no dogs in the pool, around the pool, only walk in special pet area, etc. Turns out, you can't leave the dogs in the rooms alone (even in a crate). I always crate the dogs in hotels, so I was a bit surprised to hear this rule. For me, no dogs left alone in the room is a tough one, especially when you are on vacation and want dinner or dive trips. Board the dogs during the day before the dive? Pick them up afterwards? Thankfully, the owner was there and agreed to give it a try while we were on the dives, unless someone complained.
Usually at other pet friendly hotels, that's the rule. If there's a problem, then you have to make another arrangement. I can understand not wanting to disturb other guests, but this doesn't jive with completely pet friendly practices. I am looking forward to seeing if that policy changes, since this is a new policy for them. I would definitely go back to Amoray for the low rates and dive trip convenience, but will not bring the dogs, with that policy. So why not any other no frills dive resort or hotel, if I have to board the dogs anyway? -

We have stayed and enjoyed diving with Amoray several times. We just want to add a review that complements their customer service. We checked in on Sunday for a week of diving. They not only remembered our preference for a cabin but they had a copy of a credit we had for two dives that were paid for but not used during our last trip. Unfortunately, a tropical depression blew in and pretty much ended that plan. So the next morning we decided to go home and come back when the weather got better. From start to finish they were totally up front about the weather and the chances of diving that week. There were no problems, extra charges, or hassles with us canceling our reservations.

I'm going with 5 on this one, but if there were 1/2's I would be at 4-1/2 since they don't have internet access. If they did I could stay here MUCH, MUCH longer :).
My husband and I were traveling to FL for a regular visit to the Venice/Sarasota area and decided to pop down to the Keys for the weekend to get some extra diving in. Key Largo is at the tip so we figured we would start there. I found Amoray while looking around online and it looked like exactly what we wanted, 4 dives and a stay overnight.
This was exactly what we were looking for, everyone was so nice in the office even though I'm sure I drove Dan crazy with questions :) and if not for the size boats they take out our dive trip would have been ruined or I just wouldn't have made it through since the seas were around 3-4' both days. Scott and Joe were excellent captains and Christy and Chad (aka: Mississippi) made setup, change-out and getting on and off the boat a dream.
I would highly recommend Amoray to anyone looking for a place to dive in Key Largo, it's not fancy, but it's exactly what you need! -

my fam of 5 stayed Sept 30-Oct2 2011. We loved it. This was our 2nd visit and won't be our last. We stayed in W2B and it was perfect. Upstairs balcony with hammocks was like a retreat. We went out on the Just in Time with capt. Tayne. and snorkeled Grecian Rocks and The Statue of the Abyss! He was pleasant and professional. My teenage daughters loved this trip as well as my 8 year old son. We plan on returning and getting some dive certifications for my husband and 16 year old daughter. Our room was spacious, clean and quite comfortable for all of us. We cooked our Saturday evening meal and enjoyed sunset from our little piece of heaven. Can't wait to go back!
when the guy at the front desk heard me say we had 2 teens he gave me a paper with the wi-fi password for them to use, however they never even picked up the i-touch's/phones the whole weekend because they were too busy enjoying the laid back weekend in the Keys! -

I never stayed here but I went diving with them a number of times. I would definitely go back to dive with them whenever I am in Key Largo. I got my advanced certification here with Scott Fowler who was awesome! The boats are great and the staff is extremely accommodating. And as usual, the diving is amazing! I highly recommend Amy Slate's!

BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE!!! I called to make a one night reservation in May because I do the MS bike ride from Miami to Key Largo and back the next day. When I spoke to Walt he informed me of the two night stay policy and when I explained why I couldn't stay for two nights he agreed to wave the policy because he said that business was so slow that they were happy to have the business. One month later, business picked up and I got a message from Amy Slate saying that they canceled my reservation because I wasn't staying two nights. I called back and explained that the two nights policy was waived and they basically told me too bad, business was picking up. Well, I will remember how I was treated and I plan to share with as many people as I can. Too risky to make a reservation because they will dump you if something better comes along!

I would give them a 0, but it wasn't an option. These folks lied to us 3 times. The first time we stayed there we paid for a room with 2 queen beds... There was only 1, and since it was after hours there was no one to address our grievance. On top of that the room was the closest to the highway and around 3:30 AM loud trucks offered us a terrible rest. We were also unable to receive wifi in that room. They did give us $10 off after some arguing in the morning. We missed out on the morning dive and decided to go south. Old Wooden Bridge cabins on Big Pine Key had a very nice staff. On our way back up we decided to give Amy's and the dive another shot. Requesting a larger room, away from the highway, with a stove, they guaranteed us everything we needed to make eggs in the morning. There was no frying pan or cutting board in the room. In the morning we did the dive and was told by the staff not to worry about checking out quick and to take our time. When I went to the office with plenty of time left before the offered checkout to get a frying pan and cutting board, the same man, James, denied me access and said he was going to charge us extra if we didn't leave immediately. The same guy who told us not to worry about it! On top of that, the staff (who apparently lived in the 2 rooms on either side of us with their entire families) were drinking beers hanging out right outside our door. This place sucked. When their business fails it will not be because of the economy but rather because of their horrible service, and poor communication, all signs of bad management. Beware!

People were soo nice, convenient location, cozy rooms!! And, it's inexpensive! We don't dive YET so we don't know that end of service, but we loved everything else here.
