I've been eating cake from Amy's ever since I was a little cake-eater in training. My parents bought my birthday cakes here. And now I'm buying b-day cakes for my friends from Amy.
I'm not sure if "Amy" is just a randomly chosen name, but I like to think that it's named after the mean Cantonese lady that works there. And if that is in fact the case, then wow, Amy's a bitch!
A while back, I went to buy a birthday cake for a friend, and explained to the lady that I wanted her to write "Happy Birthday [name]" on it. She screamed at me saying that she knew how to spell it without my instructions. At first I was startled, cuz bakery ladies are generally kind and gentle people like Sara Lee and Little Debbie. But not Amy. Amy was/is a level 30 gremlin bitch. When I timidly asked her to add the sliced almond flakes to the side of the cake, she shouted that she always added the almonds last and didn't need to be reminded by her customers. (I was THIS close to dragon-punching her).
Amy's prices are cheap and the cake is perfectly light and encased in a nice soft cream. The fruit in the middle always tastes fresh. If you don't mind the mean auntie behind the counter, I would recommend Amy's for your cakey needs.

I miss you Amy, you old bitter hag.

A solid 4 stars for a bakery that creates inexpensive, tasty cakes!

Most of the cakes are fruit-filled (typically fresh strawberry, banana, fruit cocktail, etc.).  The cakes aren't super fluffy, but moreso, a little spongy in texture.  The frosting isn't too overbearing or sweet.  Can't say much for the decorations, or lack thereof.  They are simple (i.e., frosting roses on the corners, ribbon effects, etc.).  But again, they are cheap!  A 1/2 sheet cake costs $30.  A round cake is $13.

Amy's sells cake toppers and other plastic decorations, but they are really dated and look like they have been on the wall since forever.

Like Egan Y. mentioned, Amy isn't the happiest baker around, but she does bake up some good cakes!

I won't even try to write a review as good as EY L.  LOL. Got a great chocolate cake - $18...it fed 22 people plus we had almost half of it left. Great price and amazing light cake! I'll be back!

Stopped by here after Taiwan Fest 2008 because I was parked around the corner, it had an "A" rating, and it was in this strip mall that I wouldn't step foot in after sundown. If you're of the Sweet Lady Jane demographic, keep on movin' don't stop, because this place is here to sell cakes and desserts and that's it.

It's a tiny, humble place, with a refrigerator full of cakes directly in front of you and a one filled with drinks to your right. To the left was a counter full of different baked goods, ranging from macaroons, to cookies to cakes (75 cents for a slice of cake!, $19 for a half sheet!), they had this fruit cake that was twice as high as any sheet cake I've ever seen, and they have a wall full of cake toppers and candles for dirt cheap. I bought a slice of chocolate cake to go, and it was dee-lish.

My game plan in the future would be to stop by here after stuffing myself with a double dip at Philippe's and grabbing some desserts to go. The strip mall has a small lot, so if there aren't a ton of people at the place next door getting bail bonds, then you should be able to find a spot.

OMG- so freaking good. I just had a slice of cake and it is so freaking good. I will be purchasing my next cake from here.

Its better than Elizabeths bakery in south gate, the quality is so much better.

I'm not sure why, but in the beginning years of my life my parents used to always get me a personal sized strawberry whipped cream birthday cake from Amy's every Sunday. And we lived in Glassel Park. ~^O^~?
That was probably why I was so big when I was little. Now that I'm older, I get to jaunt around L.A. in my very own car with my very own money on a hunt for the perfect wedding cake that will satisfy my anal retentiveness. I hadn't been to Amy's in so long and am always astounded that it's still in business, being that it's stuck on an island far away from the center of Chinatown. Inside, you'll find glassed cold display fridges instead of glassed display counters, showing ready-made birthday cakes and sliced strawberry, tres leches, and chocolate cakes. I bought a 15-inch coffee cream roll for $3.50. This is usually the price for an 8-inch jelly/cream roll in the other Chinatown bakeries. Afterwards, I shared it with my parents, who were also surprised Amy's was still open after nearly 25 years. The cake is a coffee flavored sponge (or is it chiffon?) cake filled with coffee butter cream. The other bakeries use coffee whipped cream for their fillings, so I found this a novel surprise. It's not bad at all, not bland, like a nice slice of breakfast cake.

Though the little strip plaza has its own parking lot, it's difficult to turn into, so you might prefer using the meters next to the lot or be brave and vere 90 degrees right with eyes closed.

This bakery is located on one of those lots you'd normally drive by because they're so ugly, but stop by if you are interested in purchasing a cake.
I've been going here ever since I was a child to buy birthday cakes and it's good to see they're still in business. I especially love these cakes simply because they aren't too sweet. They're delectable. They're also inexpensive.
