I ended up discovering (and then playing) Tuesday Night Trivia here quite by accident. Walked in here with a couple of friends quite randomly one Tuesday night and the waitress asked if we would mind taking the one remaining table by the door. "You'll have to share it with the trivia guy" she said, "but don't worry, he's very polite." And that's how we met Adam. He convinced us to play ("its free and you get money off your bill if you win!") so we did. We ended up finishing in 5th place, which is pretty respectable all things considered.
The service is good, as is the beer selection and their food is decent. I haven't had a chance to make it to their happy hour yet but their regular prices are pretty reasonable. Good ambiance, good crowd, overall just the type of bar I'd like to be a regular at.
I'm definitely planning to go back and take another shot at trivia. Looking for some teammates. Anybody interested? :)Listed in: Morningside Heights - Back…

I know it's probably a little weird for a chick to wander into a bar alone with a book, but that's what I did the other evening. I was waiting for my boyfriend, had a book, and wanted a beer. I've been to this joint a number of times and love it for the most part. Great selection of beer. Generally really tasty food. I am a fan.
My only small complaint was that I didn't feel super welcomed when I showed up. I might be overly-sensitive. That's a distinct possibility. But the bartenders (all female that night) basically ignored me until I flashed cash. Ah well. I got my beer. -

I don't find myself bar hopping in the Upper West Side too often, but luckily enough I stumbled upon Amsterdam Tavern (with the help of Yelp, of course). Turned out to be a bar with a solid draft selection, plenty of seating, good crowd, and fine service.
The place was absolutely jumping on a Friday night. We managed to find a couple of seats at an already pretty full table - luckily the other patrons were very chill and didn't mind us encroaching (5 yard penalty!). At the previous spot my friend had raved about about a Sierra Nevada brew, Celebration Ale, that reminded her of Christmas (and I raved about the oh-so-amazing Shiner Cheer) and it turned out that Amsterdam happened to have it on tap. What a pleasant surprise on a chilly January night!
Food looked/smelled great, but we had just gotten done scarfing chicken & waffles down at Amy Ruth's and were far from hungry. I'd definitely be back for their bottomless brunch though.Listed in: It's Beer Thirty...!

Awesome place for happy hour, bottle beers were $2.50 and i think drafts were like $4. Good after work crowd.

This is my favorite of the dive bar locales. They have good food, great beers and $4 draft happy hour. The downside is no juke box and the outside is very small but you're there for the beer and they have the best in town.

Great beer. And great selection. Really, really great beer and great selection - that changes, and is always good.
Food is pretty good - not your usual boring pub fare, but nothing extraordinary.
HOWEVER - service has gone downhill the past few months. We used to come here very frequently, for beers and food - great neighborhood bar with an awesome beer selection. And we like to drink good beer. Frequently, meaning about once a week or every other week. Would go to meet friends and go to watch NFL games.
And the waitresses USED TO BE great. Very friendly, efficient, together. But recently - read: the last 3-4 months, the service has been very bad. Ignoring you when you come in, seating you and bringing menus, only to take 15-20 minutes to actually come and take your order, very rude and inconsiderate. This has led us to really try to find another bar to go to in the neighborhood -- which is unfortunate, since the beer selection here is AWESOME and the food is pretty good too. What happened to the old waitresses, and old vibe?? We want that back, please. -

Definitely a good happy hour stop. From 4-7pm most craft beers are $4, $5 for the more expensive ones. I wish I had been here when they were $3. They have over 20 craft beers to choose from and you can bring a growler to fill up. Standard UW crowd, and they had 90's alt rock jams playing.

Come here on Tuesday night for Trivia night it you want me to whoop your ass* at trivia while I drink a ridiculous amount of beer and berate you.
Come here on a Sunday afternoon after your teachers mind-fuc you (not funny, useful, or cool) for 10 hours** while I drink a ridiculous amount of beer and berate you.
Come here any weekday night for the $4 selection of beers which covers an entire sheet of paper, front and back. This leads to -- you guessed it -- too many beers and being berated by me.
The food is standard pub fare and while it won't make you wanna slap yo' mama, it will go well with the ridiculous amounts of beer I drink and the berating you get from me.
Who wants to go?

* By whoop your ass, I mean I will get 3rd place and a $10 bar tab because there was a section on reality TV and no one watches more reality TV than me.

Once again, add this place to the list of places I didn't take advantage of when I actually lived in Manhattan Valley...
At 2 a.m., there is a comfortable amount of patronage. I don't want to go into a packed bar, but I don't want to go anywhere that seems a little TOO empty.
The beer list was plentiful, with plenty of craft beers on draught or in bottles. My one disappointment was that there was only one kind of hard cider! However, it was Kopparberg Pear, and it was merely $5 (...I've seriously and regrettably paid $9 for it at other establishments...), but no Original Sin, Woodpecker, or another tradition apple hard cider? Curious.
Food was available, but I did not partake. Lots of flat-screen TVs showed the kind of awesome and bizarre television that lends itself to 2 a.m. show times. Nice vibe. Nice ambiance. Chill. On my own, I don't think I'd come here electively, but I'd certainly go back if a friend said, "Hey. Let's go HERE!" whilst puttering around that 'hood.
I'd rather go there then 1020 Bar, that's for sure... -

Food here is awesome, great bar for sharing snacks. Specials included mac and cheese and short ribs. Bar is small and cozy, with an old neighborhood feel. Waitresses are attentive and super sweet (of course, I'm pretty sure my dad flirted his way to good service).

I'm one week into a two month stay in New York, and I've already been to this place three times. I guess that makes it my favorite bar in New York. The beer list is diverse and always changing, the service is friendly and prompt, the food is decent pub chow, the atmosphere is just right, and the music is usually great. My only complaint is the hordes of self-entitled brats that frequent it, but what do you want from a bar five blocks from Columbia?

This place has a nice rotation of craft beers on tap. Its a quaint destination and even on a Saturday night late was able to get a seat with friends to relax and share a few.
The food menu looked really good as well but we only tried the sweet potato fries which were great.
I will be back here to check out what else rotates onto the taps and to try some of the food because if the fries were any indication it will be good. -

It was a rainy Thursday night, and my boyfriend and I were looking for a place in the neighborhood to catch Game 6 of the World Series. We spent about 20 seconds in the Village Pourhouse, felt like we had stepped into a raucous frat party, and walked back out into the rain. What to do?
Amsterdam Tavern to the rescue!
There was a lively, spirited crowd (most people seemed into the game), and though it was crowded, we were still able to get a table. It's a small place, with a few tables that each seat about 6 people, so we wound up sharing a 6-person table with another couple, but it still felt like there was sufficient personal space. (And believe me, I need my personal space.)
There was an impressive selection of beers on tap, and the food, while nothing to write home about, was solid, standard pub fare. Service was great, and everything was reasonably priced.
There were plenty of flat-screen TVs for optimal game-viewing. Whenever the Cardinals scored there was a lot of cheering, high-5-ing, and this one dude kept doing this entertaining jumping up-and-down sort of victory dance. So it was definitely a fun, spirited, but not-too-crazy atmosphere, and for us it was the perfect setting to enjoy the incredibly exciting Game 6. (I can't even imagine what kind of madness was going on up the street at Village Frathouse, but I am very glad I didn't stick around to find out.)
We were so glad to have stumbled upon this place and will definitely be back. -
Review from Kenny O.
Very comfortable little tavern. Enough space to sit around 12 on the counter, and perhaps for 40 at the tables. Walked in after a long day if traveling, and a nice game of futbol between Napoli and Inter was on. My stress seemed to melt away with the pints of Keegan Ale Hurricane Kitty and Arcadia Starboard stout was served.
I had a long in-and-out conversation with the other football enthusiasts in the tavern. For a while they ignored me until they figured out I spoke Spanish fluently and could join their little group! One of the older gents bought me a few shots, so I can say that I'm a fan of the clientele coming around this place :) -

My friend and I came here spontaneously around 8pm on a Saturday night. The bar was definitely full but not too full. We easily got seats at the bar and had two screens to watch the Barcelona vs. Madrid soccer game.
Pretty decent draft list, though the first three options my friend chose were all out at the time.
Definitely a sports bar, but it was clean, and the bartenders were nice and attentive. I'll be back!Listed in: BOW - the bars of Manhattan…

What can I say about this place other than it's just the best. Drinks are always incredible, food rocks and the staff is amazing. I suggest nachos, fried green beans, mac and cheese, the burger or chicken strips. Draught beer list is constantly rotating and always incredible. Aaaannndd make sure to check out specials: sriracha mac and cheese popped up last week and rocked. Could've done without the .95 cent price bump in the last 3-4 months but other than that 106 is the best!

Great food, spotty service. My boyfriend found the menu online, sounded good so we went. We knew it was a bar and probably full of college students but we went anyway. It was a very nice crowd, not overly crowded. The cheese plate, steamed mussels and hamburger were delicious. The service was a bit sub-par. We were served the food with no utensils. We got tired of waiting for the waitress to bring them so got up and got them ourself. My food was served first. After waiting a while, we asked the waitress where the hamburger was. She said they accidentally gave it to someone else. She compensated by comping a beer and had the kitchen send one out right away.
All in all, the food was good enough for a return visit. Hope the service improves. -

Beer List - 4.5 stars
Food quality 3.5 stars
Accuracy of their website: 0 stars
I like this place, they have great fries, good burgers and a good tap list, and most are only $6. BUT i have to say, CHANGE the damn menu on the website and get rid of the specials you claim to have, since you don't offer them. Sort of annoying.
Anyway, the wait staff and bartenders are friendly, though they are a bit annoying about growler fill ups. Don't advertise them on the menu if you are going to complain about it. Also, don't over charge me for them. -

Came in here on a Friday night with my girlfriend looking for a casual meal, after having read some good reviews on Yelp (yay! it works!).
We shared a lobster mac & cheese appetizer...OMG what a cheese-erific start! granted, if you put lobster, macaroni and cheese together, it's prettyyyy hard to fuck up, but it was awesome. The only other time I'd had lobster mac & cheese was at Poco on the LES (that review's on my to do list)...and that was HEAVENLY. A106's isn't as good, but is still really good.
Girlfriend had the burger with gruyere cheese and mushroom...AMAZING and perfectly cooked. Waitress accidentally brought regular fries when she had ordered sweet potato fries. When my GF asked, she brought us an extra basket of fries, so that was very cool. Unfortunately, both sets of fries were kinda bland :(
I had the grilled chicken salad, which was good but...uh...too healthy I guess? I wanted something healthy after the LM&C, but jeez louise. Very very very, almost non-existent dressing, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. For $12, eh I'll make my own.
Awesome selection of beers though! I didn't really like mine, but that's a matter of the beer's taste, not A106's. If I'm in the neighborhood, I'm definitely going back for an appetizer (definitely mac & cheese again or hummus) and a weird beer you don't normally drink....oh and maybe take home a "growler", a $13 to-go half-gallon of beer...good idea!!
Oh, and it has a buttload of TV's. You can't possibly escape sports if you come here.
Good place IF:
1. you're looking for a casual spot with good food and a good beer
2. you live in the neighborhood...nothing to travel more than 20 minutes for or write home about -

I'm confused- is it Amsterdam 106 or Amsterdam Tavern? Whatever it is called, this restaurant is a beautiful space with a clean, fresh ambience. During daytime hours, it is very light and airy and when dusk settles, it becomes quite romantic and cozy. I can picture taking my girlfriends for brunch in this surprising location.
Mr and I stopped by for happy hour after work for the first time. Apparently, we arrived at the "soft opening" before next week's Grand Opening! New management? The menu was still in development.
Anyhoo, we had a $5 cheese plate, and house merlot / chardonnay and beer that was like $5 bucks? I forget, it was something crazy cheap like $5 or less until 7pm on weekdays. Today, only 1 beer on tap was on the happy hour menu, which I don't quite understand. But the bartender was very sweet and approachable. We'll most likely come back to try something on the full menu after the grand opening.
The bathroom doors do need some signs signifying that they do lead to bathrooms. -

Lobster Salad Slider - WOW - REALLY GOOD.
I've tried a lot of items from the new menu (i think it's different from what is shown on the website - but even better) and loved everything - OH YA the veggie wrap with edamame puree is awesome too! And, I can never get enough of their sweet potato fries! I'm hungry just thinking about it!
Fun, young crowd, too. Very casual and welcoming atmosphere. Everyone wants to be friends here :) -

I've been back to Amsterdam 106 a few times since my first review and it is holding tightly to its 3 star review. I like that I can usually find a table and that they try to offer more than just the average beer selection.
But it is frustrating how the waitresses never come around then get mad when you finally suck it up and order from the bar... I also have to admit that despite the 20+ beers on tap I always struggle to find a single one that I want. 106 is a good neighbor hood bar but certainly not worth traveling more than 5 blocks for.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I really like Amsterdam 106. In its previous life, it was a dive bar that looked sketchy to even a bar rat like myself.
But I like the new and improved 106 a lot. The selection of beer is outstanding - very varied with brands and styles I've never heard of yet alone tasted (I had a stout with hints of Mayan chocolate my last time there).
Service is prompt and friendly - sometimes they give out free blow pops or starburst. Can't go wrong there. In terms of food, I've had the burger, which was nothing special but definitely good enough.Listed in: Up on 110th Street, Drinking on the 1, 2, 3 Line

If you live in New York, you have done some serious people watching/judging in your life. My trip to 106 was the scene for one of the most hilarious people watching and subsequent judgings that I have had in a New York bar. Let's just say that if you have underwear that say "CLASS" in big letters across your ass, you should purchase jeans that are high enough in the back that they cover said undergarments when seated. And if you need to adjust yourself so that your "CLASS" is no longer broadcasted, you should pull your jeans up as opposed to pulling your underwear down. Crack kills. :)
That said, Amsterdam 106 seemed to be a perfectly nice bar/restaurant and is always busy when I walk by. They have a respectable beer selection that rotates weekly and a decent menu. To be honest, I don't remember what I had to eat, besides the fact that it was a burger and it was tasty. The best part about this place is the growlers: for a reasonable price you can have a half gallon of the beer of your choice to bring home with you!! can it get better than that? Nope!

Hell yeah Amsterdam 106! The first bar I visited in New York this past trip and my experience was awesome. Walter, the manager, was our server and he did a great job of recommending food and beer to my friend and I. He also made us feel very welcome and even comped a round of drinks! (I hope it wasn't a mistake on his part, but I don't think it was!)
I ordered two beers- Atwater's Java Vanilla Porter and Goose Island's 312, neither of which I can find on tap in Los Angeles! I was impressed with the selection; since I'm from California and distribution of our beers to NYC is limited, it was interesting to find Green Flash on tap in NYC. I also appreciated that they served more than just Smuttynose, SlyFox, or Magic Hat #9. These seem to be staples on the taps in NYC, and he offered way more. I was also impressed with the Dogfishhead selection, and that Walter let us know about a Harpoon event coming up. Amsterdam 106 is definitely a bar that gets frequent, rotating, and sometimes rare taps. If I lived in the area, I think this would be one of my main spots (my Library Alehouse equivalent of Manhattan!)
Also, per recommendation of a VERY enthusiastic guest sharing a table with us, I had the BEST TUNA MELT EVAH (this is really the name) with the "Mottz" aka mozzarella. It was actually really good, and although not the best ever, it was pretty damn close. I'd come back just to try more items on the menu.
However, on a Friday night of course, seats are hard to find but they do come up if you camp out for a bit. Cheers to Amsterdam 106; you've made my short list of great craft beer bars in NYC!Listed in: Beer Odyssey NYC

A proper "beer" bar ... had a selection over over a couple dozen.
It's no Peculier, but it also doesn't smell like sewage.
Very reasonable prices, even though we missed a happy hour which they do from apparently 4-6 M-F ... can you say $2 Guinness?!
Tasty menu, we just had some small bites.
A GORGEOUS tin ceiling and very nice tables in general, all of them topped in polished granite.
Friendly service (cute waitress).
A few quality TVs if you're looking to catch a game/etc.
Just an all-around stand-out place in the area.
I don't make it up that way often, but I'd go here again without hesitation. -

Only one word is necessary here:
GROWLERS!!!
For those unversed in what is best about beer brewing, let me educate you. Imagine a half gallon glass container that you bring to your friendly neighborhood bar or brewery (in my case, Amsterdam 106) that is then filled with one of many brews on a list. Air sealed and sitting in your fridge until you decide to partake.
I can't comment on anything else since we literally walked in and walked out, but I was happy with the results. The bartender seemed a little annoyed for really no reason, but I'm okay considering the growler itself is $5 (one-time fee since you bring your growler back) and to fill it up with any of their decent ales is $13. I also noticed that if you're into Bud Light, it's a grand total of $9. Some of the more expensive ones ran you $22. Not bad for a half gallon, which is roughly 4-5 pints. I'll definitely be back and maybe I'll actually sit down in here!Listed in: Manhattan Valley, Gimme a Pint!

We retreated here in search of real alcohol after suffering through fake, watery caipirinhas at Blockheads down the street. My friend said it was a great bar, and you know, I wasn't disappointed! We were here on a Monday night and there were enough peeps in the joint to make it festive but it wasn't obnoxiously crowded. Just a chill neighborhood scene. The decor is beautiful -- lots of wood, ornate ceiling, lights not too dark/not too light -- and the staff are polite and quick with the service. The bathrooms are nice, clean and private. And I was, thankfully, able to get a few glasses of Johnny Walker Black on ice and just hang out.
The night took a turn towards hilarity when we noticed they had a jukebox and we started putting in our songs & singing along. They have a lot of everything! It was cool to be able to hear the Smiths, Cake, Eric Clapton, Lily Allen, Tears for Fears, Prince and Simon & Garfunkel all in the same place! Plus they had bar staff put together their own favorites playlists alongside the full albums, and I love it when places do that. It gives them a little bit more character. We stayed so long we ended up ordering Dinner Part 2 (aka drunk eats). The cheese sticks we ordered were decent but they took a little too long to get to the table . . . or did it just seem that way? ;)
Overall I was quite happy -- this is an excellent Upper West Side drinking spot that's not too young or too old. I'll be back! -

I really like this place. Not all the time, mind you, because some days it's just so crowded that you can't even get close to the bar to order. But on a Wednesday night the crowd is under control and you can even get a seat if you stay away from the dinner rush.
The kitchen is surprisingly good. I've ordered mostly sandwiches, but the guy next to me the last time in there had something called shastuka (sp?) that looked amazing. I'm getting that next time. I don't know who Mary Ryan is, but the sandwich named after her is a thick slab of perfectly cooked (rare for me) tuna on grainy bread with lettuce, tomato, avocado, wasabi mayo, etc. The po boy is really tasty as well, and the veggie burger is huge and tastes like home made.
They have a lot of brews available, but the house beer that's made by a local brewery is really good and incredibly cheap.
And the staff is super friendly. It's a great place to unwind after a long day. -

It's a small bar with some good beers. I don't live in this area and I probably won't come back... but IF I did live here, this would probably be a place I'd go to drink after work.
I was here for Craft Beer Week, and got to taste the wheat beer and maple ale. The maple ale was pretty good - it had a smooth syrupy finish (maple, duh). We were at a table and the waitress was kind of a you-know-what and completely ignored us. However, a guy that seemed to be a manager of sorts came up and asked if we were still waiting for our beers. When I told him we were still waiting to order, he jumped and quickly got our beers, which was cool. Then he mentioned another beer he thought I might be interested in and said he'd give us a taste of it. He walked away. And never got us our beer tastes. Oh well.
Maybe I was just in a good mood that night because I think it's still a decent place to have a few drinks. I also appreciate the glass of blow-pops they offer at the bar. -

Totally adequate and nothing more. This bar probably has four yelp stars because it is decently shiny and clean and carries more variety of beer than Bud, Miller, and Coors. Even though the beer selection is a bit expanded, it isn't anything that impressive or interesting. If you envision your typical bar with typical atmosphere, that's what you're going to get in 106. Nothing more, nothing less.
It's nice that it's near where I live, but I wouldn't give a place like this a second thought if it were downtown. -

Just the best place in the world.
A bar with the best happy hour ($3 pints of interesting and obscure and high-alcohol brews) and shockingly delectable food (well, the shock is starting to wear off because now I just expect the best from them). Great bartenders and, for most of the day, the best vibe. Wi-fi, televisions, jukebox with homemade mixes.
It's what I've always wanted in a cafe, just in a bar, so it's mad better.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Nate is a cool bartender. The 80's music was blasting! It was fun to clown around. That energy was infectious! Great beers on tap. The medium rare 106 burger was a big sloppy mess of meat and blue cheese! Yeah, baby!!! The fries were crisp. The area nearest to where the bar and the front door meets seems a little small, so I can imagine a nasty bottleneck action on the weekend. But today, this was very enjoyable.

I liked the ambiance and the view (hello there, grad school boys!), but felt like my waitress wasn't very attentive. Maybe because it was a Friday night and I was there with my girl friend, and the waitress prefers to flirt with boy customers. Who knows.
They were out of two of three beers I'd wanted to try, and the beer menu hadn't been updated to reflect that, so it took me forever to order.
Sadly, I'm used to paying $6+ for a crummy pint of Magic Hat in the city, so the prices sure don't make this bar special. I'll come back to gawk at college kids that I'm too old to date, so there's that. -
