Super solid 4 star rating.
I'll take you through the whole experience.
Ease of website and reservation: very easy and user friendly
Email confirmation with all pertinent info.
Location: If you are not some normal numbnut tourist then you'd rather stay in Dante's 7th level before you'll stay in mid-town ever again...so for you who get it the UWS is where to be. Oh and for about a hundred less a night. Ugh, sometimes I hate being so right. Its at 76th/Amsterdam. Great bars, restaurants, subway stops, shopping, and central park are all within a couple blocks.
Staff: Super friendly and quite helpful.
Room: Damn clean and spacious. Our had a kitchenette and a huge modern bathroom. Clean! Everything perfect.
Price: Dirt cheap in comparison to tourist traps. Who in their right mind would want to stay at a Super 8 in Times Sq. for $250/night. Idiots!
Checkout: Noon...awesome...since getting in at 5am makes it difficult to get out coherently by 10 or 11am. PLus they'll watch your bags if needed.
Pub on bottom floor/corner. Flat out perfect. Wish I knew the name so I could Yelp it.
Why not 5 stars? 1) No elevator...strictly euro style. OK for me but some of the older chaps may have problems. 2) Construction next door takes away from cozy home away from home feeling.
Oh, and check out the worlds smallest bathroom on the first floor. God forbid you need to shit and you are over 5'10"!
Relatively unknown walkup hostelry over a bar, with small rooms and largish prices. Excellently located on the UWS, but otherwise, not special. Corner of 76th and Amsterdam. Europeans and other money savers come here.
UPDATE: May 2008: a alrge luixury bldg is going up around (literally) this bldg.
I've stayed at this place a number of times - mainly for the price. About $120 a night is a deal in the upper west side. The rooms are o.k. - not the cleanest. I've experienced a room with a private bath as well as shared bath. The bathrooms are not cleaned frequently enough. There seems to be a plethora of individuals living in the hotel and from their rooms wafts the smell of cigarette smoke and the sounds of blaring tv's. It's not terrible if you need a short stay for a cheap price.
