Was reading someone else's review about falafel and like a flash of lightning to the skull, remembered stumbling in here after a lovely drunken evening and having the BEST. FALAFEL. EVER.
But, you know, I'd been indulging so take that with a grain of salt.
The table/eating area was basically a hot mess, but it was maybe 3am so I don't hold that too hard against them.
Will try to go back sober and confirm impressions. -

Crazy amounts of condiments available. I really like the eggplant one but they dont serve it all the time. boo. I try to put as much as i can in my falafel. Not a good idea when everything spills on you as you try and eat. I think by the 5th time i went there, i only used 3 napkins. Impressive!
Line moves super fast. -
Review from Rob P.
I seriously cannot believe the hype surrounding this place.
Full disclosure: I don't actually like falafel. I'll eat just about anything, but falafel isn't something I crave, or seek out on a regular basis. Maybe the problem is that I screw it up at the topping bar? After all, how do I know which of the million permutations of toppings is going to yield a sandwich that really tastes delicious?
Or maybe I was too sober when I ate here? Given its location in Adams Morgan, I can see this being the vegetarian alternative to Jumbo Slice - a food that becomes more acceptable with each beer in your stomach.
Oh yeah - what about the fries? They're fine. They're fries. Deep fry some cut potatoes in oil. Not especially hard to screw up.
I think coming to Amsterdam was the moment I realized that I'm too old for the Adams Morgan crowd anymore. Sitting in that tiny little restaurant, with heavy metal music blasting in the background, Amsterdam employees screaming obscenities at each other, I realized that this just wasn't my scene. -
Review from Neelam P.
I've never seen so many condiments for a falafel. I was tempted to put everything in my falafel but I knew there was NO way, especially since they don't give you plates or utensils. The yogurt/dill (raita-like sauce) is delicious!
The falafel balls were perfectly crispy and hot. The pita fell apart mid-meal but I think that was because I put too much humus in it! Anyway, it was really good and extremely filling. Jaimin S. and I actually shared one and I thought it was a wise choice.
We split the fries (regular sized) and they were delicious. First of all, the regular size is pretty big...definitely share worthy. They were hot, right out of the oil, and extremely crispy. This is just how I like my fries! We tried the peanut and mayo sauces with the fries but didn't care for them much...preferred the ketchup by far.
Overall, it's a solid meal!Listed in: Nom Nom in DC

Review from Nene K.
I'm going to be contrarian and give the Falafelshop 2 stars. I really don't get it. I was vegetarian for 2 years and still appreciate yummy and fresh veg*n food. However, I'm not convinced that Amsterdam Falafelshop lives up to its hype. I've been there twice and have been a little underwhelmed each time. The pita is small and falls apart even if you carefully apply the toppings, taking care to smush them. The flavors are good but only because the combination of the flavors makes sense not because AF prepares the toppings in any special way.
I've had better falafel at Israeli-run shops in NYC. Judging from the yelp reviews, I was expecting AF to be more like that. I can see why health conscious people who want a better late night drunk food option than McDonald's or Adams Morgan bar food would like AF, but I think the hours and the price are the main reasons why AF is so popular. I don't know, call me crazy but I don't think the food warrants 5 stars. -

**** 3.5 stars ****
Well it took me nearly 4 years to finally indulge this venerable rite of passage, but when I did I was actually rewarded with the best falafel I've had in DC (or anywhere technically, since DC is the only place I've eaten it). Granted, all other instances have resulted in me disliking falafel altogether, so take my rating scale for what it's worth...but this is the first place I would consider returning to again.
To be honest though, I'm not entirely sure it's the falafel I would come back for or the toppings bar. Give me enough peppers and dill yogurt sauce and I'll be happy with just about anything stuffed in a pita pocket. Once I had exhausted my top layer of condiments though I did still enjoy the flavor and consistency of the actual falafel, to some degree. I suppose that's worth something. The fact this is pretty filling and relatively cheap definitely gains some big bonus points too. Given the other "quick" drunk food options in Adams Morgan I would definitely choose Amsterdam.
I don't get the fixation people have with the fries though. I remember when I moved here I heard about them incessantly. Maybe I was just listening to the wrong people, but in all those "Best of" lists (which are admittedly usually written by idiots) these fries always appeared. They're fresh, which is good, but entirely basic in every way. I wound up eating a few then giving the rest to a sorostitute.
The place is quite small, and get go from deserted to packed in a matter of moments depending on what bar nearby is clearing out. Be warned if you have to sit at the little barstool area (like I did) that the heat vent is right there and will quickly make you uncomfortable.Listed in: Veg-I-Might

I can't comment on the falafels since I'm not vegetarian and skipped them to save room for other food later in the night. The fries were standard, even on the all-too-crispy side. It's cool that they have tables specially designed to hold the cones of french fries, but other than this quirk and the music from hipster heaven, the place is pretty average. Also, parking really sucks here and it's very likely you'll have to resort to the pricey parking structure next door.
Maybe if I had eaten a falafel I would've enjoyed the experience more. -

It's 2am and you're stuck in Adams Morgan... what to do? Amsterdam Falafel-duh!
This place makes my heart grow big just thinking about it. Order some water? Get a high five from the cashier- awesome!
The place doesn't take credit card and there isn't very much room to site, but it's definitely worth checking out. The variety of condiments are great...I think I've finally developed a pretty solid strategy of what I like and how to fit it all in one pita. If you're still hungry, the fries are good too.
It reminds me of the good ol' days of living in Berkeley. It's a hole in the wall, but you'll love the charm of the place and appreciate the good food. -

Washington, DC
Okay so the place isn't "fine dining" . The seating is haphazard and there are no utensils. But I didn't mind using my fingers since the food was genuinely tasty!
The only thing they serve is falafel and fries (as the name suggests). But the topping bar is extensive and the ingredients are all obviously fresh and well made.
I personally don't love falafel, but if you're gonna have it, have it here. The staff is very friendly, extra toppings are free and so is the soda refill.
Overall, if you don't care drunk people, frilly decor or forks and knives and just want really good food- this is your place! -
Review from Francisbro S.
Washington, DC
It's good. This is some of the best falafel I have ever had including the falafel I had in Istanbul. The thing that really makes this place great is the topping bar, which has 10-15 different types of toppings for the falafel.
The first time I went the guy behind the counter showed me a trick: after you get the falafel, which comes in a pita you squeeze the sides of the pita to smush the falafel which then sticks to the sides of the pita, when you open it up again there is a crevasse to stuff your toppings inside of.
The other thing that I love about this place is the Dutch Mayo. This stuff is nothing like the mayo you buy in supermarkets, I could literally drink the stuff, in fact I have before. For those of you who are looking for something to put on your french fries this is it. I like it so much that I will occasionally get extra containers of it and bring it home to put it on other foods.
If you are looking for anything besides falafel and fries, don't go here, variety isn't their strong suit, that's all they serve. But it's fast and delicious, so if you like falafel this place is for you. -

The falafel is great, tastes wonderful. Fries are good too.
The overall price is cheap, $10 per person average.
The staff is very welcoming.
The place is very small though.

Tried this place for the first time a few days ago based on the Washington Post listing the falafel as one of the top 40 things to try in DC.
I really liked it - one of the better falafels I have had, including having been to the Middle East. The falafel itself tasted very fresh, was not overly fried, and was easily "smushed" to accommodate some toppings from the toppings bar. I had a small - which was big enough and very filling. The pita bread is organic, which is a nice touch.
I also ordered a small fry, which I have to say was a gigantic portion of fries. I am not a huge fry fan, but thought they were very good, not too mealy, and the peanut sauce was great (and reminded me of Amsterdam).
The toppings bar is good, though based on other reviews I thought it would be bigger. I found it adequate, was just expecting the Taj Majal based on everything saying it was "huge".
One word of caution - the place is tiny, so be prepared to take it to go or eat it out on the sidewalk. I was there at 5pm on New Year's Eve and had to wedge into a counter stool. I used a City Paper as my plate. Also, there is a delicate dance that happens while you wait for the sandwich and jockey with folks trying to get to the toppings bar.
The staff were ok - not overly friendly or communicative. But given this is a cheap falafel place, I wasn't that concerned.
For those of you that like your falafel Israeli style, I would recommend just putting the fries into your sandwich. Probably closest thing you will get to Israel without going there.
Will certainly go back again - well worth the 1/2 mile walk from Columbia Heights to Adams Morgan. Also, they are apparently open REALLY late on weekends - a plus for those out clubbing. -

I have.never.seen.so.many.toppings for falafel before! EVER.
But catch-22, there are so many choices that it can be extremely overwhelming, that you end up topping...wrong?! Yes.
But the eggplant topping is by far the best tasting topping there. Or anywhere.
The fries were...okay, just regular fries, but we'll forgive that. -

I wondered into Amsterdam Falafel for lunch. It was my first time there & was pleasantly surprised. The sandwich was good and there were plenty of toppings. The person behind the counter was friendly. The only con is the fries. I expected fries with some spice or something - instead they were just plain old ordinary flavorless fries.
Next time I am hungry for falafels I will be back - but will skip the fries. -

Cheap and fast. Service behind the counter can be a little flat and impersonal, but they have lots of signs telling you what to do.
You have the choice of small or regular, white or wheat pita. The falafel is some of the best I've had anywhere. If you smash your falafel in the pita, you can get your fillings distributed a little bit better in the pita. The fillings are completely up to you, so if you make something funky, it is completely your fault. I wouldn't mind if they had suggested combinations, because sometimes what you make may be slightly off! The french fries are good, but they aren't the best I've had. The large fry is plenty to feed several people if you like to share.
They don't have napkins or silverware. The fries can be helpful fork-like vessels, but be prepared to lick your fingers clean!
The seating is sparse, so if it is busy/cold/rainy, you may have to eat standing up. -
Review from Tara L.
'Twas the night before Thanksgiving
And all through the 'hood
The bars were last calling
But it was all good
My sister declared without worry or shame
"It's the night before Thanksgiving - I'm stepping up my eating game!"
We circled the block for signs full of glow
But only vegan friendly
Would be the way that we'd go
I made a quick call from my Yelp app with ease
To find that Amsterdam was ready to please!
One white, one wheat pita
(Since we're a mixed bunch)
And load up those toppings
I'm ready to munch!
Things got a little messy
This I'll admit
But besides the indulgence
The food was legit!
Although it was not my first time at Amsterdam, it had been some time since my last, late night falafel adventure. As always it did not disappoint. I think the falafels are great (albeit not my favorite of all time) and the unlimited, fresh toppings are a bonus although I'd advise to keep it simple.
And if you're not into falafels, the fries are bangin' and served up as a huge portion. The fries alone are worth a late night romp.Listed in: Late Night Eats, Grown Folks Guide To AdMo!

Cheap, fast, and delicious - I only wish it were closer to my apartment!
You can choose between a regular or small size as well as white or wheat pita. The small wheat is plenty of food for me, especially after I tackle the packed toppings bar.
You can refill your sauces, but you only get one shot at the toppings so choose wisely and pack them in!
There aren't a whole lot of seats so be prepared to stand or get your food to go. Also, no silverware - you'll need to master eating it with your hands. -
Review from Juliet K.
great hole in the wall, fast place for some falafel. honestly, i'm not a huge fan of falafel. its all vegetarian and i like my meat.... so i wasnt that trilled to try this place. but the bf kept raving about their falafel and he's a huge carnivore, so i figured its gotta be good. we get there, and at first glance, i'm not impressed. the store is TINY with about 5 tables inside and not much room for anything.
i got the small on wheat. the small is not so small. i think there were 3 or 4 falafel and then they have this endless bar of toppings with lots of different stuff: taziki sauce, hummus (2 diff kinds), cucumbers, cilantro, beets, cabbage... i cant even remember what else - something with whole chickpeas and something else that kinda resembled coleslaw... and then lots of sauces, one tomato based, 2 spicy ones (one green and one red) and then tahiti sauce and garlic sauce as well.
the small filled me up a lot more than i thought, AND it was a lot tastier than i thought it would be. the falafel was perfectly crispy on the outside, and with all the fixings you could really tailor it to your taste! i warn you though, its a bit hard to eat, or maybe i'm just a messy eater. delish. i would totally go back for more! -

I came here on a weekday night and it was nice and quiet. The seating area holds about a dozen tables, half inside, half out. It was clean and the staff was great when I went. As most other have related, you can get falafel pitas, fries, brownies and drinks here. However, some have said this place was cheap. That is not really the case. For $9 you get a pop and a 'regular' (5 falafel) pita. The pitas also come in a small/3 falafel size. These prices are roughly average for any DC quick lunch/dinner sort of place, not something I'd exactly consider cheap.* It is however, very good and they do use organic pitas. You are also able to use the toppings bar to your heart's content. I'd definitely go back, if for nothing else, the aftertaste it leaves is amazing.
*I'm extremely cheap. -

The food was awesome. The staff was cool. One of the most insane restaurant experiences I've ever had though. A HUGE Indian family of like 20 came in ahead of us and fucked up the whole place. The gyro bar is build your own style and these fuckers were stuffing hundreds of little cups with toppings and fighting with the staff who were nicely trying to get them to stop stealing and holding up their business.

Great condiment bar. It is a great dilemma and contest to see how many items you can fit in your pita. Be a great drinking game, but would end in weeping if any items hit the floor. I would have given five stars, but I am not that big of a fan of their fries. With all the topping wonderment for the felafel, I want dry spice choices to sprinkle on my luggage sized container of fries - cayenne, cumin, paprika or any other brown red color spice...

5 Starts, as good as its gets. Definitely a must whenever i'm even in the area.
The falafel is moist and falvorful, and bread is deliciously soft and warm.
The topping bar...whoa, the topping bar... everything you could ever dream of...pickled veggies, slaws, sauces, herbs... you name it they've got it...what they don't have, is pita's big enough to hold it all...
Enjoy!Listed in: DC Carry-out

Delicious falafel & a wonderful toppings bar! Probably one of the best you can get in the US..especially after a late night of partying :P
Food: fresh, fast, tasty
Ambiance: nothing special, kinda cramped, can get messy @ late night hours
Price: Rather cheap, fast food levels
Bottomline: Sober or drunk this is a great place for lunch/dinner/midnight snack -

I travel to DC on business a few times a year, and this is always one of my first stops. Last time I passed up a business dinner at a fancy steakhouse and showed up here solo, in my suit, instead. If that doesn't tell you how I feel about this falafel nothing will... :)
Best falafel around. Friendly service. Great value and selection of toppings. -

best late night food in dc. hands down. fried balls of goodness.
the service is hilarious. they are willing to serve the falafel with out the pita making it a nice little late night treat for those of us avoiding gluten. The bar full of toppings makes your custom order possible with out the confusing "no tomatoes no onion" BS.
Be ready to scramble for a seat or take it out the curb because there is little seating available but this little cheap gem is worth it. -

I dream about these falafels. And more specifically, about the elaborate bar of fresh, delicious toppings. The grilled eggplant, pickled turnips, red cabbage slaw, spicy green salsa, tahini... absolutely mouth-watering. I would argue these are the best falafels outside of Israel.
Mega-tip here: Order the falafels without the pita... that way, the falafels come piled in a foil cup, and you have much more flexibility and room for toppings. I crush the falafels, start with sauces, then pile on the toppings. Never disappoints. My only gripe is the strict no-going-back-for-seconds rule on the toppings bar and the flimsy wooden mini-sporks.
On the plus side, the shop recently started accepting credit cards (though the price was always great for an all-cash establishment). They've also been recruiting pretty heavily for franchises. Just hoping all this 'growth' doesn't hurt the quality of the food. -
Review from Anne M.
I moved away from DC three years ago. Even though San Francisco has some of the best produce and places to eat in the world, I still lay awake at night counting down the days until my next visit to dc to get some Amsterdam Falafel.
Huge portions, delicious toppings, big luscious falafel balls and then crushing them flat... My mouth is watering just at the thought...
The toppings are all so fresh. The cucumbers, the tahini, the hummus...
The fries.... even Fritjes in SF cannot do justice to the warm delicious Belgian style fries at Amsterdam Falfel. The peanut sauce and mayonnaise are TO DIE FOR.

I've been here many many times and keep wanting to come back. The falafel is great, well cooked up and wrapped in a pita. The topping bar is amongst the best. It has so much variety that it would take several falafels to be able to try it all.
If I am ever hanging in Adams Morgan, I am probably coming by here for a meal. -

Amsterdam Falafel Shop located in Adams Morgan is a real treat. For $6, you get a falafel and you can top it any way you like! It's like an all-you-can-eat savory sundae. I stacked mine so high that it had tripled in size from when the cook had handed me the conic wonder. I was determined to maximize my bang-for-the-buck ratio. I could no longer see the falafel balls that were hidden underneath the mountain of toppings. I ate my way through the multiple layers of hummus, tahini, chickpeas, cucumbers, etc. After about 10 minutes, I could finally see the falafel balls. They were still crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle, just the way it should be. It's the best falafel I've had in DC to date. And since a friend of mine bought me the falafel, I was getting infinite ROI on the deal!

Review from Tee Jay R.
While the line-up is long, the wait for your order can be a little tedious, and the fixin bar is crowded to the point of being stressful, I have nothing but praise for the food itself. Hot, crunchy, flavourful falafel balls and perfectly crisped fries, with a varied bevy of DIY toppings are awfully close to the real deal I grew familiar with in the Middle East, though on that note I do wish they'd offer to do it up Israeli style (i.e., stuffed with french fries and eggplant) which I can't seem to find anywhere in North America. It is indeed reminiscent of an Amsterdam street food shop, minus the Turkish pizza and relentless techno soundtrack.

For the huge handful of falafel that you get it is well worth much more than the $5 you pay for such hot deliciousness!!
My friend Jen M. gave me simple instructions (since parking was solidly full everywhere, she had to drop me off first and then hunted for parking on a side street). Buy the falafel, squish the falafels flat, then open the pita as wide as it can go and put as much toppings as you can inside.
There had to be over a dozen toppings at the topping bar, everything from pickled vegetables to hummus to yogurt to garbanzo beans. And so much more. I attempted to put at least a scoop of each into the pita and after the eighth scoop my pita looked like it was going to explode. A girl standing next to me was explaining to her two friends how to fill the pita and she pointed at me and said "girl, you got it done right!"
After I couldn't stuff any more into the pita, an employee helpfully wrapped my pita in a large piece of foil (I was going to take it home and eat it). Jen also recommended the fries, but after looking at the monstrous pita there would be no way I could have room for them. I have to say they smelled mighty awesome and I saw a couple of cones looking really good.
Ahh yes...and a fresh orange juice squeezer machine? You can have freshly squeezed orange juice to go with your food.
Oooohh and the falafel was fabulous!! I wasn't sure how all the different toppings would fare all mixed up, but it worked out really well. So good!!
As others have said, this place stays open late. But whether you are looking for an inexpensive dinner or a late night snack, this place is a real winner. -

So money.
It's good because it's fresh, the condiment bar is amazing, it's cheap, and it's in a cool part of town.
I happen to love all things Nederlandish so I loved the Amsterdam theme.
Marcus behind the counter is also the coolest - when I told him I lived in Carolina, we worked out a swap for some BBQ the next time I come up on bizness. -

Quick, cheap and delicious. I love this falafel joint! You order a complete falafel for under $5, and there is a bar right there where you can add all your toppings yourself. Just about any topping you can think of.
If you're in the Adams Morgan area, it's definitely worth trekking up this walk-up for one. And it's open pretty late every night, too, which earns extra brownie points from me. ^~^ -

I've been a Kalorama/Adams Morgan resident for 3+ months now, and have only made my first visit to Amsterdam Falafelshop last week. And for that, I deeply apologize.
The bf kept telling me how great it was, but I always met it with a "mmm...nah". Silly girl.
Unlike some not-to-be-named pizza places on 18th st (let's call them Voldemort Pizza), it doesn't need to be 3am and you don't need to be falling down drunk to think they're awesome. They're awesome any time of day, stone-cold sober.
I got the small on white pita. If you've never been, take note of the helpful instructions about smashing your balls some before you hit the (condiment) bar. There are little fork-picks on top of the bar that I missed but would have been really helpful. I get why they don't have bowls, but it'd really help with condiment distribution as you get further along your sandwich.
Fries were hot, thick and mealy. Delicious. -

Quite the divey late night college place. the restaurant was FILTHY DISGUSTING. BUT if ur a drunk frat boy, im sure u wont notice or mind.
the dutch mayo sauce is good. most of the toppings are great but cut too large to even fit on ur falafel pita.
lines can get really long and the pick up process gets confusing. they need more cashiers/faster workers.
good quality falafel taste. the pitas can sometimes be cold. pitas should b nice and warm. -

Some combinations in life are just meant to be together like peas and carrots, romeo and juliet, mac and cheese.pepperoni and pizza.
Such a classic DC love story exists called Dan and Falafel and is best early or very late on a weekend night by visiting the legendary Dan's cafe which is one of DC's best dive bars and getting very filled with very well priced drinks and overloading on shots served from a ketchup bottle.
After you get very hungry from all that drinking, head up the street to amstedam falafel shop. DO NOT STOP AND LOOK AT THE PIZZA, it's not real. Unfortunately DC does not have any real pizza.
After arriving at Amsterdam Falafelshop, Order a falafel sandwich on white or wheat pita bread and take your hands and press the fresh fried falafel balls in the pita bread to crush them completely into the sandwich. this is very important. CRUSH them in as if you are very Angry using brute force and both hands
the move to the topping counter to fill up the toppings. yes fill it up.
Did i not say FILL UP THE TOPPINGS?
I think you did not understand what i said. don't be shy
FILL UP THE TOPPINGS on the pita sandwich.
Ok that's better.
Now remember they don't serve spoons here intentionally. bring the caveman instinct out in you and use your hands while eating. it's okay everyone else also just came from Dan's.
Grab a lot of napkins and devour the fresh tasty falafel sandwich. its great quality and very tasty, though it is almost triple the price from New York city as it will run you $5-$7 atleast depending on the size.
You are welcome :)
