Review from Di R.
I have driven past this place a million times and had no idea how great it was inside!
On Mother's Day my daughter and I ran off to church early promising my husband we would be on time, so we did not have time to eat. After church we still had to grocery shop for a dinner I was having at our house and go to a place my daughter had been wanting to go so we ran to Joe's Place on Spring Street. WHAT were we thinking??? It was Mother's Day!
It was packed! Soooo I said I had seen this coffee shop that looked kinda cute.... blah, blah, blah.... and she said she had met a friend there once on one of her visits home and liked it & she thought it might have something to eat.... there was parking nearby, so we tried it and it was delightful!
There are big overstuffed sofas and random table seating through out the place. Reminescent of The Perk on Friends. I absolutely loved it. The girls up front were nice and the service was fast. (Even though it was pretty busy!) The food was great (we had two fluffy eggs on english muffins) and maybe because it was Mother's Day and my daughter had surprised me with a visit "home" to honor her ole' mama or what but I do have to say that each visit only gets better. But the coffee... (I had the house blend and my daughter had the Americano) everything was wonderful! Maybe cuz we are both older and appreciate our time together more but I loved this little place and it "just worked" for us at that particular time to make it the perfect find.
I love Yelp! It is so easy to pull up reviews on my phone and decide if I want to try a place or not........
I think a good Yelper will yelp because they love to write. They want to share the good, the bad, and the mediocre. They have a variety of reviews that range from one to five stars.
That being said~
I have read the reviews about an older woman who seems a little territorial and controlling that made me re-think my original idea that I had when I was sitting there~ about bringing my laptop there to "write" and work on my book there but I have to say that I only saw very pleasant young girls working there that served very good food, promptly and loved the charm of this very great find. So I still give it 5 stars! I want this place to be here for a LONG time!!! I really do. I would love to have this my new go to place to suggest when I want to meet a friend...etc...
It usually is the groups who don't order a lot other than a cup of coffee or the lone guy typing all day on his laptop that are your best advertisement and honey if you have tapped into your marketing budget lately.... sometimes those "word of mouthers" are your best advertisement!!!!! So even if you think they are a waste of space... you might want to re-think your view point.Listed in: Best Make The World Go Away…

Yeah, it was alright. I didn't get the greatest of vibes in here, and then the drinks came out... they were okay, but that's all. One of them was far too sweet, the espresso was not very good, and the orange juice clearly came from a bottle.
The egg sandwich was pretty bland, too...
I guess I'm probably being nice with this review. -

When I first started going to this coffe shop I would have given it 5 stars, but after my most recent experience, it would get a Zero if yelp offered that option.
In short, this coffee shop is doing so well that the owner actually tells people not to return! Here's what happened...
My nursing study group has been meeting at Amsterdam quite frequently, about once a week. There is usually three to five of us, and we stay for a couple of hours. During that time we EACH buy a minimum of 2 drinks and often a snack or lunch.
One afternoon the owner specifically approached two of my study buddies, who had arrived before me. She complained to them that one, our group always comes at her busiest times, and two that we always take her biggest table. Because of this she claims that we singlehandedly drive people away from staying to enjoy their coffee.
My friends were shocked and immediately left, arranging with the rest of us to meet elsewhere.
In answer to her complaints: there are several tables that seat four people, so I don't understand which is her biggest. We also only take one of those tables when there are going to be several of us. Secondly, "her busiest time" uh, aren't we customers too?! It's not like we premeditate coming during a rush, we meet when we can. Thirdly, a great deal of people get coffee to go regardless of how busy the cafe is...or how many students are there, I dare say. You can't blame the fact that not everyone stays on us.
I thought that coffee shops ENCOURAGED people to hang out, especially customers like our group who buy SEVERAL items. Each of us had spent a LOT of money in this cafe, so to be told that being a regular is unwelcome is just mind blowing! Wow, I can't believe that a business is doing so well that the owner actually tells loyal customers not to return.
Needless to say, our study group now meets elsewhere and I will NEVER spend another dollar in Amsterdam. It's too bad because before all this I actually really enjoyed their coffee and food. I hope that the owner reads this, as she clearly needs a wake up call regarding her business. -

Very clean and great tasting coffee. The Panini's are also fantastic. I'd give it a try. It has a great atmosphere while you enjoy good coffee.

I recently came into this coffeeshop with my sister, we had purchased some food from another location and were intending on eating at the park, picnic style. But then it started to rain and we looked for another spot to eat our food. Walking around we spotted this coffee shop and saw that it wasn't really busy inside so we popped in to order some tea and eat our food.
It really is a cute place and in a great location. But that's all I have to say that remains positive.
An older woman, not sure if she were the manager or the owner (never the less, very rudely), approached us commenting on the smell of our food. She told us that the smell was bothering other customers (which there were 3 of on the other side of the shop). It obviously didn't bother them, it bothered her. She asked us to either throw out our food or leave. Saying that she didn't her regular customers to be disgusted by us and our smelly food. DISGUSTED.
Meanwhile I am waiting for a coffee.
Like I am not a paying customer. I just can't believe she would say that to any customers. It's not like we were smelly bums off the streets eating garbage in her restaurant!! We were paying customers! Were.
I am not sure if she was the manager or whether or not she was just a barista on a power trip but that place could use some new employees and better customer service skills. Geeze lady. Chill out. -

Pros:
-Great central location off 13th street. It seriously doesn't get any better.
-Cool looking decor inside. Warm, cozy, clean and inviting with several tables in which to sit.
-Expedient service. Very impressed.
Cons:
-25 cent credit card surcharge (Seriously?). It's not a money issue, it's a principle issue. Mastercard's money is just as good as Uncle Sam's these days.
-My Latte tasted weak and overly-milky. I've received better lattes from Starbucks in the past.
Overall, I will be back next time I'm around downtown Paso and craving an injection of caffeine into my bloodstream. Maybe I'll just try something else and pay with cash (Who still carries cash nowadays anyway?) -

Stopped in for a coffee break while wandering the square. Service was attentive and the coffee brewed nicely. We managed to get a small table in the corner to relax while drinking the coffee down.

I like the turtledove coffee. They have a unique beer selection. Chai beer? Interesting taste. Great atmostphere, but the flies were a bit annoying. I keep coming back for the coffee though. Love it.

Easily the best coffee in north SLO County. The atmosphere is unique, the service is USUALLY friendly but the owner likes to impose censorship upon her patrons. No fowl language, smoking, or suggestive conversations. If you are willing to overlook the disregard for you 1st amendment rights, there is great coffee, delicious muffins, good panini, and tasty italian soda to enjoy along with free wifi and music that usually strays from the mainstream. Would have been five stars if the proprietor was not so dictatorial toward her guests. At least I can talk however I like at Starbucks without being threatened with refusal of service.

Cool funky vibe, great location. I live in Atascadero, but when I'm in Paso I go here. But recently I had a bad experience. I went to get a cup of coffee, but was denied. I was simply told they were out of coffee for the day. They had a little decaf and offered me that, but I am not a decaf drinker. They offered me a pour over, which costs more, but I'm already choosing the increased price of their local shop over the cheaper Starbucks down the road, so I didn't want to pay more. I was expecting them to waive the fee for the pour over and just charge me for a normal cup of coffee. After an awkward silence I took my money back and ended up going to Starbucks. My personal thought is that a coffee shop should offer coffee during business hours. Poor service.

All the coffee and tea are organic and they make whipped cream onsite, a true old school coffee shop.
In the bathrooms they should put energy saving lights and get rid of the paper dispensers to make it more environmentally friendly

I usually order a double shot latte every where I go, but here the double shot was too strong. Good, but I'll remember to take the single shot next time.
It's a cute place and nice to hang out in. I didn't see a nose buried in a laptop anywhere. -

FINALLY!!! A real, old-school authentic un-pretentious coffee house! One of the better damn Americano's I've had in a while. Slightly sweet & smokey, 4 shots of espresso & hot water never tasted better.
A croissant roll the size of a baby's head, warmed pumpkin scone & my hangover just melted away. -

I've lived in Paso now for 6 months. I live right around the corner from Amsterdam. I've spent several hundred dollars there, but will no longer be supporting such terrible management. The coffee is delicious but the older lady that seems like she owns the place is extremely rude. They have a mug next to the coffee dispensers that distinctly says "refills $1.00" but apparently they do not honor this advertisement putting them in violation of California UCL Section 17200, specifically false advertising. They claim that refills are actually "top-offs." I told her that when her mug says "top-off" instead of "refill" that I will get a top-off. But until then I will continue to expect them to allow me a refill if I pay a dollar.

I drove up to Paso Robles for some business and decided to stop in after reading some reviews here. I must say that the place was great and the service was 5 stars. I had a chai vanilla tea with almond milk (almond milk isn't carried by some of the big coffee boys) so that was a real treat. The owner cooked me up an egg with cheddar that was a delight. She suggested it after telling her my difficulty with eating things with sugar.
Overall a great experience, the owners were very kind and although it might get busy at times, it is well worth the short wait if there is one. I will definitely stop in again on my next visit to the area. -

I'm not going to reiterate the lack of customer service. Thats kind of a difficult thing because I get coffee here all the time and most of the time the girls are very nice and polite, but there are a couple people who work there that are kind of rude. I hate to ridicule the shop as a whole, because most of the time I love it. The coffee is pretty good. Atmosphere is awesome here. Its worth a try, but honestly I think Paso Espresso has better service, equally good coffee, and its not crazy busy all the time. Try for yourselves.

There is a barista at Amsterdam that I've consistently received a snobby attitude from when ordering. I try to be really nice to service industry workers and it bums me out to get this reaction. I've visited this joint multiple times and always experience the same tude from this punk. I'm probably just not hipster enough though.
Anyways. Besides that one annoying guy and the flies that do accumulate (which is kinda gross for a food-serving establishment), this place is bomb.
The coffee is strong and delicious and there are unique drinks on the menu, which I truly appreciate. The tea selection is awesome and the vibe is chill to do some work or chat it up. The muffins and such have always looked appetizing but I'd skip the food (and go to Thomas Hill Organics next door instead).
Stop in for a nice cuppa joe, if you can handle joe without any joe. -

So I'm looking at my previous review, and everything still holds true except for the service.
I've come here twice in the past two weeks and both times my order was wrong. Both times, I watched a person write and complete my order incorrectly, which is interesting to me because the orders were written either on the cup itself or a post-it that was directly in front of their face. And, to be clear, the orders were not complicated: I asked for a vanilla Italian soda and received a raspberry one instead. I asked for cheddar cheese and got papper jack. The lack of attention to detail is what you would expect from maybe Starbucks, not a boutique coffee house.
This by itself might not have caused me to amend my review, but the attitude of the guy at the register this last time definitely did. Not only was he notably not friendly, but he obviously could have cared less that there were about 6 of us waiting for more than 30 minutes to get food. I've worked in a tasting room - I get that sometimes things are just backed up, but that's when you politely say "Hey, sorry for the delay here, it will be about ** minutes". I had a meeting to get to and was late because no one bothered to mention that I was going to be standing there for half an hour. I wish I could have just received a refund.
The whole experience completely rubbed me the wrong way because coffee house employees are usually the first ones you interact with in the morning. I left Amsterdam in a less than great mood, feeling like it was a complete waste of my time and money.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Loved the atmosphere, location and music. Coffee was very good. A couple management issues. First don't sell bagels from a plastic bag bought at the market. These are awful. Make a deal with a local bakery and buy real bagels. Second get rid of at least most of the flies in the place. This could be a five star place.

I'm on a little extended break in Paso and Amsterdam is my second home. I get some work done via their free wifi. Great coffee, fun crowd, friendly staff, quick service.
I decided to have some breakfast here today because all the other breakfast choices in Paso are greasy spoons. I had the tri-tip breakfast burrito and I was pleasantly surprised. -
Review from Kenny O.
Pretty nice atmosphere, but just so-so espresso drinks.
I came here during a drive up to the bay on the 101. After picking up a friend en route, we decided to caffeinate ourselves a bit, so we came here on recommendation of said friend's mom.
The place was in downtown Paso Robles and it looked real interesting from outside. There's a half-door entrance coming in and the interior was decorated cozily.
The menu had quite a few special drinks, so I decided to try one. I believe I had the forest mint espresso drink for $5 (large). It was a bit pricey, but I'm pretty used to Starbucks prices, so this was reasonable for a non-chain business. The drink was alright -- couldn't really taste any espresso, but it was yummy; after a while, however, it proved to be a little too sweet for my palette, so it just ended up not being finished on the car ride to San Francisco.
I'd still recommend this venue if you're in the area. -

Inland Empire
I recently moved from San Jose back to the Inland Empire, and due to the size of my car, had to leave a bit of my shit behind for a second trip.* So during this second trip, I drove up to San Jose, went to a museum with my mom, packed my shit, and prepared to drive back. I had been getting about 3 hours of sleep for perhaps a week. So this trip was fueled primarily by espresso drinks.
On the way to San Jose, my mid-trip stop was in Paso Robles, where I staggered around in a semi-daze, tired but alert, and aware that once my morning espresso drink wore off, I'd be in deep trouble. I found this shop, went inside, and asked for a recommendation as I squinted at the menu sign. Before she could give me one, however, I said
LAVENDER LATTE! Give me one, please!
And oh boy, was it delicious.
So on the drive BACK to IE, I stopped in again. I looked at the menu for something else awesome and different, informed them of a grammar error on their sign (she soooooo didn't care), and said
STRAWBERRY MOCHA! Please!
Oh boy again.
So thank you, Amsterdam Coffeehouse, for some new and delicious things.
* I am not sure how this happened. It all fit in my car when I moved UP there. I guess the addition of my new teeny tiny dog in her travel box in the front seat makes all the difference.Listed in: Storytime

I used to be loyal regular here because 1) I am huge on supporting local, 2) their coffee was pretty good and 3) it was located close to where I work. After raising the price of my Iced Americano by nearly a buck (overnight and without warning) I posted a negative review on Yelp and then boycotted the place for a couple of months.
Yesterday I decided I would give Amsterdam another shot to redeem itself... only to be chastised by one of the owners (in front of my co-workers nonetheless) for my negative Yelp review. It was pretty a embarrassing and uncomfortable experience, and seeing as how I personally did nothing wrong to receive this treatment, I will have to let the negative review stand.
Try Paso Espresso on Spring and 14th instead. Or head to Starbucks on 24th -- the drinks are cheaper (without sacraficing quality) and I hear they have free Wifi starting July 1, 2010.Comment from Rosemary B. of Amsterdam Coffee House 6/16/2010

Middle of the road coffee. Better than Starbucks, but Peet's would hit 4 stars for the coffee alone.
That said, great atmosphere, can totally chill and relax, and they have books sitting around inviting you to stay a while. (I'd almost give them 4 stars just for the atmosphere, but not quite)
Dude behind the counter could probably learn to smile, but if I had to work Sunday morning, I wouldn't be smiling either... -

If i lived in paso I would be a regular at this coffee place. They have beautiful looking pastries and cookies, a great tea selection, and the coffee was good. I love the atmosphere, the entry door is fabulous and the cafe is really bright and cozy at the same time, which is hard to do. I loved this little coffee shop. Next time I will try one of their pastries, they looked greaaaaat! The barista's were really nice and in the 30 second interaction managed to crack a friendly joke, which always is a plus for me. :)

Crippling effects of being a barista for 4 years: Never finding pleasure in coffee houses- ever- again.
Until last Saturday, I was a coffee house cripple. Couldn't enjoy them. Never liked their drinks as much as the ones I used to make. Ever. Each venture to a new coffee house was just a cup of disappointment with a sprinkling of nutmeg.
Rosemary the coffee angel cured me last Saturday.
Hallelujah.
There is a coffee god... and he lives at Amsterdam Coffee House in Paso Robles.
The Chai Latte Rosemary's daughter (we will call her baby coffee angel) made me was sumptuous. Yes. Sumptuous. Better than anything I ever made myself. Perfect spice, foam, and temperature. I lapped it up like a kitten at a saucer of cream.
Dear coffee god, please bring an Amsterdam Coffee house closer to where I live. Until then, I will look forward to visits whenever I am through Paso Robles.
Amen. -

Espresso was OK.
The owner and staff don't know anything about tea. Gave my wife a very weak mediocre tea. When my wife asked for additional tea leaves, they said that is how much the "tea lady" told her to put in and it was better than Lipton. Well, we did not spend over $2 for a Lipton and who in their right mind compares loose leave tea to Lipton anyway.
Scone was soggy in the middle, pretty much a waste of calorie
