White Plains, NY
One of my favorite pool halls in NYC. They have well maintained pool tables with decent cues.
If you're not into pool, you can try your hand at darts, table tennis, fooz ball or just drink at the bar.
League members for both 8 and 9 ball are very friendly -

This place has been here since i came to NY seventen years ago. Althoug i remeber it to be a different name. I think i've come here about the same number of times (17). Nothing special no frills, average prices for drinks ($9), only good thing is the $29 flat rate after 10 pm for you late night pool junkies.
Pros: flat rate pool - no matter how many players
Cons: The Richard (dick) at the front desk has a chip on his shoulder. -

My new favourite way to kill time while waiting for a table at Ippudo!
Ramen cravings aside, Amsterdam Billiards is clean, well lit, smoke-free, with tables and pool cues that are in great shape and lots of room in between tables.
I can't comment on food or drinks (since we were waiting for aforementioned ramen and the promise of silky smooth sake), but if you're willing to cough up a pretty penny, at least you get what you pay for to properly enjoy a game or two of pool. -

We were here for literally 90 seconds tops before this place revealed its douche colors.
Two of us came in to play a game. As we were checking out the lay-out of the place and looking for a free table, a manager-type came up to us and scolded us like we were wayward teenagers: "You can't just hang out here like this."
!!! Rude!!!
Never again.Listed in: East Village Proper, Son

This place is excellent, if a bit expensive. It's the best pool hall in New York.
There are a lot of great tables, and famous pool players come to play here. The league is excellent and a great way to meet people. They even have beer pong.
The drinks are good, and the staff is incredibly friendly. The downside is that it sometimes takes a while for a waitress to get to you. -

I was directed to this place by http://NewYears.com for the 2011 NYE party. I was thinking of Katwalk but was told by the lady at http://NewYears.com that this place would be better for a 30 something crowd and would be packed. So with that advise I bought the package for a private table and chairs to sit.
When I got there the place was only 1/3 full at 11pm. The staff was polite and helpful. My table was ready and my bottles of Champagne and Vodka were good to go. The place was nice looking and the table in great condition for a Pool hall.
I started to play and I was looking around for single women and found little none. Mostly guys, the women that were there were paired up with guys. So I have to hold that against http://NewYears.com Jersey for lying to me that Amsterdam was a meat market.
There was a countdown and a Strip show to change things up then while I was striking up a conversation with a woman at one table the staff came by and cleaned up my table. I was shocked by that. I was to have the table until 3am but it was 1am and I have no balls to play with (pardon the pun).
I was invited to play pool with a very nice lady named Mandi and her friends Omar and Kevin. We player 8 and 9 ball and had fun until 4am. Drinks kept flowing due to my VIP open bar pass so that made the night go by faster.
The staff was real nice and helpful. My cell was low and they happened to have a charger to fit mine. They took it behind the bar and let it charge. Kool move in my opinion. The Asian Waitress that was a belly dancer was great and nice but the Asian behind the bar gave me a snobby look when I gave her 2 bucks for 3 drinks I ordered on my open VIP tap. A beer, a water, and a Rum and Coke, Not very hard drinks to make yet 2 bucks was not good enough for her. The Lebanese (At least that what I think he was) was rude. You can tell he like to hit the gym and show it off but his attitude does not fit the club. When I walked in I should him my print out for my VIP package he glanced at the paper and then wave his hand like swatting a fly telling "go, go". If it was not for Chris I would not have know where to go or what to do. The doorman was more interested in his texting.
I will be in NYC again for Clubbin and drinking and would stop by this place again but only if Mandi, Omar, or Kevin were there. I would want to make sure this place is pack with women before I commit to it. Drinks are not strong and you will need to eat before you go.
This place would be a 3 star if it was not for Chris on the staff and Mandi for coming up and talking to me. -

So many negative/average reviews. I was pretty satisfied with my entire experience. The tables were in great condition, the pool sticks weren't bent and the pool hall was clean. I went on a Tuesday night and we didn't have to pay any door admission price that Sajid mentioned. I didn't order any beers or drinks so I have no clue how overly priced they are.
We made it for power hour which is pretty much 29 Dollars from 10pm - Closing. After 2 hours of playing we already beat the price they charge per hour. -

Whenever my thug flip/hawaiian squad decide to chill, its always at a pool hall.
This pool hall.
- Its got lots of room.
- The pool sticks aren't fucked up (bring your stick if you wanna hang with my boys).
- The felt on the tables aren't shredded.
- The beers are not cheap nor are the tables.
No smoking: I don't care what anyone says, its just not the same...when you are pulling your pool stick back and have a cig in your mouth...there's nothing like it.
Yea, team flip is number 1 in the world in billiards. Wez got to represent em, yo. -

I usually go play pool at Fat Cat but have often walked past this place so I was glad my date took me here to play. As it was his treat, I have no clue how much it costs.
Big pool hall with quality tables. Lots of seating around too.
I also noticed a shuffle board and ping pong tables.
There's a waitress that comes around, checking if your hand is in need of drinks. Bar serves Magners Cider - score. -

Not a bad place to go hang out on a Saturday. I actually had a good time here because of the variety of activities! I played pool, ping pong, pin ball, trivia and beer pong all while drinking strong drinks from the bar. Easy location, very large place.

This place was terrible. The bartender was unfriendly. Their bar menu prices were wrong. A duvel costs $9 on the menu, but after she poured the drink she told us it was $11! Really? False advertisement! After our first drink our bartender just ignored us. I will never come back. You shouldn't start!!!

Came here to play some pool with my friends who were here from the navy. The place charged an admissions. bleh- fail. Why? It's a stupid Tuesday night, do you really need to charge admissions? I would think not. Anyways, we got the 21+ bracelets and my friends had a beer. My end of the night was here and so I called it a night. I didn't even play pool because I didn't want to. I told them this and they still charged me. Ugh. it was a nice pool hall though and conveniently located near the bars downtown.
3/5 For Experience
3/5 for Charging cover
3/5 for Atmosphere.
It's average. A lot of seating and a few other games scattered around. Pretty damn big place. I guess they need to charge cover to make up for rent. I also see my review is consistent with others. 3/5 is generous. -

I came here to play some pool since I have always walked past it and never went in. I asked the waitress what kind of wheat beers they had and she said they have a lager and a sam adams ale... okay, my eyes glazed over realizing they hired a waitress who didnt know the difference between beers.
I decided to have mercy on her soul and opted not to call her out on it since it was too much energy to be mean that day. Nonetheless she did a few more dumb things to our party, denied us an order and walked off and only came by to scold us when we set the drink down on the table.
Next time you want a drink, do something bad to get her attention because she was a complete moron. I was totally expecting her to spit in my drink but someone had to tell her.
Overall the place is great for groups to play darts, pool, ping pong and foozball. The waitresses are all just a bunch of morons. Well, I won't say all but just that one who didn't know what a wheat beer was. I weep for her future. -
Review from Lisa R.
I held an event here on a hot, summer, Saturday night. I don't know if the air conditioning was malfunctioning, but it felt as if the outdoors entered in because it was sweltering inside the bar area. We all began playing darts, then moved on to pool and ping-pong. To reserve a table was $65/ hour, which I thought was a little pricey considering the neighborhood. Also, I reserved the two tables a few weeks in advance, and I found the process a little tedious. Everything worked out in the end, but I had to keep "on top of them" which required me to make several phone calls.
Overall, we had a good time, but we left soon after finishing our pool and ping-pong game. The layout of the bar was awkward, and we felt we couldn't hang out and enjoy our drinks without being stuck in either someone else's darts or beer pong game. I had a fun time because of the company, but I found this place to be mediocre. -
Review from Vicky C.
Extremely nice tables and cues. The felt was my favorite shade of green and very well maintained, no holes or little balls of fabric to alter the course of your ball.
There is a bit of a wait, especially on weekend nights. But you already know that. They give you this buzzer (or was it blinking...?) like contraption to alert you while you wait in either the comfy-but-is-it-clean couches or the bar. I'd never drank here (yes surprise, surprise) but I heard there's a pretty good selection.
They charge per person per hour. THE only place I've ever been to that does that. I didn't know that it's not common practice till a few months later and a friend brought me to another place (not as clean, but still nice) and the bill was 1/2 or 1/3 of what I paid here, which is usually $19-30. That is about 2-3 hours. Yeah, I play for long.
Beware that this place caters to the league. I'd never been kicked off a table as some reviews had experienced, but I think I had to wait for them to finish (about an hour!) that one time when my friend from Boston visited.
So if money wasn't an issue you'll see me here everyday. Right now, you'll find me anywhere but here. -

Went here yesterday afternoon to shoot some pool with a fellow Yelper, who may or may not have been an undercover hustler, as it turned out after a few games..
On to the establishment, they have good pool tables here, good felt and good rails, and with house cues that were in better shape than most pool halls tend to carry.
Downsides? Well, as with any pool hall in the middle of the afternoon, the people around (including myself?) can sometimes be a bit on the creepy/vagrant side, they don't have draft beers, and the other drinks they do have seem a little high on the price side. Also, they don't have much food-wise, but what they do have seems quite high in price. On top of that, the Yelp special they show here is inaccurate, as I was told when I got there that it was $22 for the table for the afternoon, not the $15 that's advertised here on the site..
What?
It's still solid value, but if you want to get liquored up you're gonna spend a little bit, and coming in during peak time looks like it could get really expensive in a hurry. -
Review from Elaine M.
The last time I was here, it was known as corner Billiards. Yes, I am aware that that was quite some time ago. Definitely looks a lot nicer now. Full service bar and ping pong tables.
We were a bit rusty so it took us almost an hour to play 3 games. A waitress came around to ask if we wanted drinks. An okay place if you're in the area and wanted to pass time. Although it can be pricey. At $9.25 per person per hour. Our rusty 3 games cost us $18.50. -

Great date spot. $6.50 bottles of beer, hilarious announcers, you check in and pay per the hour for a table. So if you are having fun, you can just play at your own table as long as you want. Love that, no one is hanging over your head to leave. Saw others get food delivered to their table. Can't wait to go back.

This place was the spot when it was on the UWS. It's a shell of it's former self now, reminds me of Pele playing at Giants Stadium.
Not worth the price, NYU kids or too close together tables jammed into too small of a place.
You ruined my favorite place in the city. -

I wound up at Amsterdam Billiards as part of an "office olympics" party for an office that wasn't mine. Long story. Not worth getting into.
What IS worth getting into is the fact that these guys run a tight ship of pool, ping pong, and then an epic winner takes all beer pong.
Yeah, that's right, for a hefty hunk of change you and your coworkers can beer pong it out over who didn't fill out the TPS report properly. But be weary of the low hanging pool table lights that will ruin your award winning arc shot that destroyed the competition in college. -

Went here for the second time on Friday night. The staff were okay; I've heard a lot of complaints about the service but I didn't see any immediate problems.
The issue was the wait. We waiting about an hour to play, which I guess wasn't their fault but I wasn't expecting that it would be nearly that long as there seemed to be open tables but I could have been mistaken.
They do have a decent bar but a non existent food menu. We ordered the wings only to hear 15 minutes later that they didn't have any left; the chicken quesadilla was just okay, nothing to write home about for about
11 or 12 dollars
I think the rates are kind of high, $9.25 per person, per hour and there were 6 of us all playing at one table (they didn't even offer us multiple tables, knowing that 6 of us would take long to cycle through games simply because of the number of us, I didn't like that at all) and we were there for a little over an hour - our bill was about $ 69 and no, this does not include the drinks or the food, that was paid for separately.
Ambiance - 6
Music - Schizophrenic
Tables - 7
Food - 5
Drinks - 5
Prices - 2
2.5 Stars...I wish yelp did half stars. -

This is my go-to neighborhood spot to play pool. The pool is NY-prices but they have this mini-sized pool table next to the bar that only costs $2, so great for a quick fix. They also have BEER PONG, PING PONG, darts, pinball machines, and foosball (but the last 3 are almost never occupied). Look for groupon/living social/bloomspot deals to visit this establishment!

If your coming strictly for billiards... the tables are awesome. In pristine condition as well as the pool balls themselves. Regulation size table. Energy from the patrons is excellent. It can range from a quiet one vs one game to a group of people having a good time. The food itself is typical bar far aka nachos, quesadillas, burgers, etc. Nothing to write home about and way over priced. If your looking just to kill a few hours and all up for having a good time, Amsterdams is the place for you.

Looks nice but expect to not shoot for long. The league teams rule this poolhall. I waited an hour to shoot with some old friends and the manager approaches us 30 minutes later and ask us to get off the table for the leagues. We ask him if he has another table for us and he said to put our name down again and it will take a hour. How can you do that to a paying customer? I was a regular when it was corners but never going back due to the lack of service, the long wait for tables, and the manager who doesn't know howbto treat there customers.
I discovered Society poolhall and the service is a lot better and not that far from Amsterdam -

Wow, I've been going to Amsterdam Billiards ever since the 90's (back in their Upper West Side location). Corner Billiards used to also be one of my favorite billiard locations back when I was in high school.
It was sad to see Corner close down, but then Amsterdam Billiards taking over this location was a good move.
I would definitely say that this is my favorite place to shoot some pool when I'm in Manhattan. The wait for a table can be long on a Friday or Saturday night but that can be expected. The tables are in very good shape which is a definitely plus as well! -
Review from Debbie K.
New York, NY
Amsterdam just relocated to the East Village, taking over the Corner Billiards location. Thank goodness. The closing of Corner was quite a loss for the 'hood. You can only play on so many beer-drenched tables, hitting walls every time you try to make a shot.
We hit AB on a Tuesday night and were surprised to find it bustling. The host told us it would be about a 20 minute wait so we got a drink at the bar. There's a small loungey area that's a nice addition for whiling away time waiting for a table. The bar staff is notably different from before, all female and of the ditzy, giggly variety. Interesting. I suppose they must have mostly male clientele.
I had plenty of time to observe them as the wait increased to about an hour. The host kept us from leaving with a free round of drinks. There looked to be a tournament going on. I understand that a lot of the old clientele moved downtown with the pool hall. Maybe that was why, but the patrons looked older and somewhat B&T, esp for a Tuesday night!
After finally scoring a table, I forgot about the bartenders and the crowd. It was nice to play on a clean table and just enjoy the game. Despite all the people who brought their own cues, there seemed to be a shortage. It took us a few minutes to find a couple.
I gave this place 4 stars because I love the laid back ambience and once you get a table, you can play in peace. Prices are reasonable, both for tables and drinks. I am a bit concerned about the wait, and hope it was an anomaly. As far as the crowd, well it will be interesting to see how old and new patrons end up intermeshing. -

This place gets no love from me.
We stopped by Friday after work to say hello to some people playing pool. We ordered drinks from the waitress by their table. The drinks came, and a few minutes later, so did the manager - with another rack and cue, which he put down on the pool table next to us. He said "there are too many people for this table, so I'm charging you for another one," and walked away. We stared at his disappearing back, agape. I left my drink, picked up the rack, and took it back to the front. I dropped it on the table in front of him and informed him that we were leaving, forever, and he better not charge anyone for it. I thought the better of calling him a dipsh*t, since he still had our buddies' credit card. But in my heart, he's a dipsh*t.
Tacky, tacky, tacky. Go elsewhere. -
Review from Clint H.
I am to guess, that the reason this place only averages 3 stars is the price, and that makes sense really. But let's face it, there's a velvet rope in front of this place...in front of a pool hall!
I used to come here back in the days of High School, back when I was on the UES attending Hunter, and when Amsterdam was also on the UES. The last time I came here, before last week, was actually some years ago, when it was still up there.
I've come down here and there are quite a few improvements from the old spot. It's nicer, if you can believe that, but the tables are still amazing. And yes, it's still a bit pricey. So here's what you should do...
I suggest: going here during the day Mon-Fri (if you're free, or if you skip work). From 11am-5pm you can get a table for a mere $15. That's $7.50 per person for 2 players to play for 6 hours! Hell yes.
I do not suggest: going here with Bobby C...he will beat you. Alot. -

The Yelp Billiards event was pretty fun, but that was due to the company and not Amsterdam Billiards. Three big strikes against the place:
1) No draft beer. What the hell? How can a pool hall not have any draft beer?
2) No food, except for pre-made sandwiches. No food either?
3) Exorbitantly expensive to play pool here. We nearly went into shock when we saw the bill for a measly 2 1/2 hours of pool. -

I'm with Brian K. on this one. I didn't notice the no draft beer clause, but still - BOOOO!!! I was very bothered by the no food clause. But I was just so hungry I went for the damn pre-packaged crap, including the world's worst chips and the world's most generic salsa.
It was pretty expensive. Next pool night I will do better detective work and find a place that doesn't try to bleed you dry. Great company on saturday, 4/21, nice tables and a good amount of space between the tables gets it the two stars.Listed in: Summummabitch!

A perfectly respectable pool hall.
Pros:
-nice tables
-rates vary based on time/day
-MANY tables; good space/atmosphere
-full bar
Cons:
-no food, no draft beer, minimal wine list - but I'd still prefer a full bar to these, so not the end of the world IMO
-a little pricey
-bathroom makes me think of public school facilities
Unlike others, I didn't find service to be a problem; a waitress came around promptly to ask if we wanted drinks. I do wish it were a bit cheaper (it's basically $8/person, minimum), but the location is awesome and the space is good. Living next door, I'll certainly be back. -
Review from Rachel A.
Jackson Heights, Queens, NY
It wasn't a sexy lady, the bar or pool hall that really caught my friend's attention at Amsterdam Billiards. Low and behold, Amsterdam Billiards had a foosball table in the back corner. They also had shuffleboard and darts but the foosball table had our names written all over it.
O: We can play two on two.
X: I'm sleepy.
O: Okay, we can play two on one.
D: This is harder than it looks.
R: Aughhhhhhhh!
O: Ooooh! Nice block!
R: I can't see the ball!!!!!
D: Don't cut my hand.
O: Just move it.
D: It's not moving.
R: It's in the corner again.
O: Good shot!
R: Aughhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
Foosball set the tone of the night and if we didn't have such problems with the foosball table, I would have given Amsterdam Billiards four stars. But the table was kind of wacky. The ball would get stuck in certain places. We'd jiggle the table, tilt it, give it a slap.. Nada. One time the ball got stuck inside the table and we had to shake it out. It was still fun though. And then we moved on to pool. Our little restaurant buzzer was ready to launch into outer space.
I think shooting pool is great fun whether it takes place in a bar, game room, or pool hall. The tables at Amsterdam Billiards are decent. The price is alright. I think we paid about $8 per person for 2 hours. There weren't many cue sticks to choose from. It's a good thing we weren't picky. In fact we shared two sticks amongst five people. A cocktail waitress came around a few times. Overall, shooting pool at Amsterdam Billiards is pretty cozy. It's comfortable and there's lots of breathing room.
Also they have the best chairs. They're kind of like a throne. I want one for my apartment. -

I've been here several times only because it's not a dark, dingy billiards place like you usually find. It's clean inside. However, my complaints are that it's extremely packed on the weekends (we had to wait over 2 hours for a pool table) and very expensive (we paid $25 for a half hour of ping-pong). Also, the service was extremely poor. The waitress was very rude - "you can't stand there, that's my spot".

I came here while waiting to get into Ippudo for a quick beer...if you've ever been to Ippudo, you know that was wishful thinking on my part! We were here for a good two hours, but it was so enjoyable being able to play pool and just hanging out with a Wagner's. The beer selection is surprisingly decent and I would definitely come back again!

I used to play at this place many years ago and recently I went there again during their power play ( Sun- Thur after 10pm 29$ play as long as you want) good deal.
My overall impression of this place is just A-OK. this place has been there forever so tables are definitely not as new as some other places. I remember back in days when smoking was still permitted everywhere.. this place had really bad air-circulation .. now it's much better .. they also add some pingpong table which was never there before..
If you are around the area during the power play.. not a good deal to check it out.. -

Last Thursday my pal and I were looking to do some pre-drinking before the James Morrison concert at Webster Hall and low and behold across the street was Amsterdam Billiards!
Once we made it past the i.d. check we went straight for the bar where a cute and friendly bartender asked us what we would like. On any normal night I would hit the amaretto sour first but tonight was a concert night so I asked the bartender if she had a specialty drink she liked to make because if so I'll have that.
Oh and did she ever! She hit me with some citrus vodka and chambord. The drink was pink and looked harmless....it pleasantly wasn't! Halfway through my drink my pal was like "Umm seriously, are you drunk already?" Yes, oh yes I was.
Soo we quickly followed our drinks up with an irish car bomb. Once that was finished we decided 2 drinks was good enough for a quick buzz so we were about to check out...when the bartender tells us that manager wanted to buy us a round! Sweet! So I go with the amaretto this time and according to my buddy this bartender used the "good stuff" in my drink...oh yeah!
Needless to say we left quite pleased with our level of drunkeness, great service, and the free drink. I will definitely be back to hit up their bar again and hopefully play some pool. -

If there were other decent places to play pool in the neighborhood, this place would get 2 stars. But alas... not too many other options around if you really feel like playing some pool... i'm not talking about inserting quarters into a little table with messed up felt and waiting your turn while a bunch of drunken kids goof around. What you can expect here is standard classic pool hall... which means good clean tables, a decent number of sticks, waitresses taking drink orders, and a motley crew of players... ranging from NYU kids to loner shady guys playing by themselves to strange competitive gamers in trench coats accusing one another of cheating.
As fellow yelper, Debbie K, has pointed out, the wait here was a bit ridiculous. Over an hour on a random Tue night?? Oh well, at least we got free drinks on the house for the long wait. The bar area is a good waiting area... but definitely not interesting enough of a scene to keep us entertained for too long of a wait.
I'm glad that Amsterdam has taken the place of the prior Corner Billiards... but I'm sad that I still have yet to find anywhere cool and fun near my 'hood to play pool. -

SoHo, New York, NY
I went on a Saturday night at around 11pm or so and the place was pretty full (not packed) once you enter, they check ID and then put you on the list and give you a little beeper thingy. 5 minutes after sitting at the bar the beeper went off and we got a table.
The place is clean, had good finger food, typical priced drinks for Manhattan so no shocker there but the only thing that annoyed me was the waitress. She would always disappear whenever I wanted to order another round of drinks. Even when we ordered 2 grey goose shots it took 5 to 10 minutes. Very annoying. But besides the waitress, everything else was good. I would recommend it for a date too... think about all the sexual innuendos (holes, stick, balls) -

It's pretty much the only game in town if you're an even halfway serious player. The problem is, they know it. So it's VERY overpriced, often overcrowded, and not nearly as friendly or inviting as it used to be when it was on the UWS. What's with the ping pong table right in the middle of the pool table area? Ugh. It's probably a goldmine for its owners, but to me it's lost nearly all of its appeal. Sad -- the old place was my favorite place in all of NYC.
On the plus side, the tables are mostly excellent, and there are few terrific people on staff. And the pool-playing regulars are great people. -
Review from Sean S.
If you like pool, this place definitely has nice tables. They're all in very good condition, and the pool ques are also kept up very well.
The place also gets a lot of regulars, so if you come before 10pm on most nights, you'll have to wait for a table. That said, it's pretty damn expensive, like $10/person per hour. Also the service is pretty poor. The waitresses seem to disappear when you want another drink. wtf!
I personally like the power play deal. All night from 10am to close, Sunday through Thursday for the low low price of $29.
