This place is a gem in a world where record shops are an old dinosaur. This place is amazing. Amoeba is my drug. I find rare music all the time. and beautiful afternoons with music and finding new inspiration at this place! Every true music die hard fan, should visit here. I love it.
There is no cure for the addiction you will have to this place!
Always hoping and popping! -

I'm sorry but Amoeba is just way over priced on their used DVD's and it's to their detriment. I went there earlier this week and bought the special edition 2 disc set of a DVD, got home, looked it up, and I could have gotten it for 50% less online. Now they have to pay for overhead, so I get they have to charge more than amazon, http://half.com or ebay, but a 50% markup from going used rate is ridiculous.
The point being, there's no point in coming here and shopping anymore. You might as well do all your shopping for DVDs, and CD's, online now and save money. They are not competitive at all, like say Atomic Records in Studio City who seemed to have decent prices on used.
Their customer service is great though and very helpful and they did help me locate a DVD I was looking for. So 5-stars on customer service, but 1 star on the prices, and 2 stars on the whole point of a store for movies/music anymore, when you can just buy online. -

It's the big daddy, the store that started the revitalization of Hollywood, ground zero for record buying in LA -- so why do I lately feel like I can't find anything there?
I remember being up at the SF store once and a dude lamenting, "All the good stuff here sold on the first day." So I made sure to show up early on Day 1 at Amoeba LA back in, what, 2001-02, and sure enough, I cleaned up.
But it lately seems like there aren't many copies of interesting '60s-'70s used vinyl. The oldies section is a complete waste unless you only want brand new reissues. Some of the prices are suspect (I'm sorry, no ELO record is worth 9 bucks). There's just less...serendipity.
Still, these are the complaints of someone who has bought a lot of good stuff there over the years and won't stop going back anytime soon. -

What more needs to be said about Amoeba? Let me try...
This is the best record store I have ever been in. I used to love the Tower Records on Sunset, and I've spent my life in indie shops across the south land throughout my life. This rules them all.
They have the largest selection of stuff anywhere. They turn their inventory alot, so you never know what you're gonna get when you walk in. An incredible selection of most genres compared to any other shop.
How many shops have a New Orleans section that's a few bins wide? Crazy. The blues? It's unbelievable. The soul is just crazy. And if you love rock music forget it, you'll be weak in the knees treaing through Amoeba's inventory. One of my favorite sections is the "oldies"; you always find something special in there.
The second floor, where the movies are, is no slouch either. I almost always enjoy going up there toward the end of my visit, getting ideas for something to watch soon at home.
They have tremendous selections of posters, shirts, turntables, and their recently upgraded book section is one of the better collections of pop culture writing around.
If I had one quibble (and for the most part I don't) it might be some of the vinyl pricing. I've been to a few indie vinyls shops and found some classic rock for better prices. But I understand that Amoeba has substantially more overhead than a little place, and their variety and deep inventory makes this tendancy understandable. One other thing they could fix: a public restroom. For a place this size, I'm gonna be here for at least 2 hours at a time, so a restroom would be a lovely addition.
This place is a southern califronia landmark. In fact, situated where it is, right across the street from The Arclight, makes the corner of Sunset and Vine the absolute Mecca of L.A.
Did I mention my love affair with Amoeba runs deep? Please don't ever change. -

It's clear that the 80's and 90's threw up in here and no one ever cleaned it up.
Walking in, I was taken a back by its vibrant décor-ish style.? I walked around overwhelmed by how big the place is; I found myself starting blankly at cassettes. I picked up a cassette like I had just seen a ghost. I held a cassette for the first time in about 10yrs. and no I'm not that old. I continued to rummage threw vinyls, CDs, and cassettes.
There's nothing like a good old element of surprise! Meaning you can't hear the music before you buy [just keep in mind, at one point...some years ago, we were all cool with that]. There's nothing wrong with keeping to your roots or culture but would it kill them to throw a little bit of technology in there? I'm just saying.
Take it for what it is...and leave it for what it isn't. Music stores are a dying breed so I really can't complain. -

This place is the spot to hit if you are a DJ. All cd sales can be returned for 75% store credit. This means you can buy CDs, rip the music to your computer, then return them and get more with the credit. I spent $150 and got 16 hours of music for a DJ gig in Las Vegas.
They also have a killer vinyl selection. -

UGH!! Shopping here is a really lame experience. You can't listen to the records, it's like an impersonal warehouse, and you get attitude. You only get 75% back on returns of used records, after not being able to preview them. I asked the clerk what about if a record skips, and he asked in an annoyed voice if there was a record I was worried about. I said, yes there was, and it has a scratch on it. He told me, "well, I PLAY records and that's not really a scratch.." all while holding the record not by the edges, but with his grubby fingers on the vinyl itself. I told him, "of course you PLAY records. You work in a RECORD store." I play records too! Duh. That's why I'm buying them. After they ring you up you have to go on the other side of a theft detection device to pick up your merchandise.
One good thing, though. There are some records that they have no idea what the hell they are, and you get a good deal on those. I got amazing prices on a couple of more obscure 4AD releases and a Jimmy Smith album from the 60s for $1, but it's not worth going back for. Too annoying to shop there. -

Awesome, can be overwhelming your first few times, I recommend take a walk around the whole place first, slowly stroll taking in everything high and low, so much coolness everywhere you look, T-shirts are in different locations most are in the back where the jazz, classical and show tunes are located. The staff are very helpful and very knowledgeable. Its not uncommon to see A and B listers shopping like the common folk, Amy Poehler was there looking through the vinyl last time I was there.
We need to support places like this and keep them alive its so vital for our heritage. -
Review from Janel S.
I'm s big fan of Zia records in Vegas, and when my friend introduced me to this place I just died and went to heaven. One may ask, how can someone stay here for hours. I'm a big movie junkie. People think buying DVDs are a waste of time, but I don't CARE! I'm a movie hoarder! Go away!
i was speechless when i saw that there two floors. TWO FLOORS!!!! This place is huge. The first floor provides all music. CDs of every genre you can think of. They have an indie section too. I found a bunch of really hard to find albums and music. Some that i found even got me reminiscing about it. Long forgotten music that came back to me.
The second floor though. That was my forte. I was literally lost there for 4 hours! 4 hours! The DVDs were so cheap, and i found a lot of movies that i've been looking for for a long time. I bought Ferris Beuller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Son in Law, Waynes World 1 and 2, and i forgot the rest. I walked out of there with 15 DVDs to add to my collection. Was I a happy camper? I sure was!!! -

Amoeba Music is impressive. It is by far the largest new + used cd shop in Los Angeles, and it's probably one of the largest in the world. It has done its best to maintain the indie-store feel but benefit from a corporate rock selection. There are frequently free concerts in the shop, and not just featuring bands you've never heard of, but hall-of-fame acts like Paul McCartney, Jpop bands like Puffy Ami Yumi, and alt-rock superstars like Panda Bear.
Unfortunately, the qty of merchandise does not reflect the selection on a per unit basis. You can find 20+ used copies of 30 Minutes to Mars second to latest CD, but finding boutique label electronica, classical. Neo-folk and metal is just as hard here as at the former Tower Records or Virgin. And in fact the success of Amoeba helped ement the failures of many local specialty music shops (Blecker Bob's, Aron's Records, Dark Realm, Middle Earth, etc). So in fact, this giant "indie" record store is really a corporate brick-and-mortar outlet with all the charm that cooler-than-you employees can offer. Truthfully, most of the counter help are actually quite nice, but with few exceptions the knowledge is general rather than specialized (the jazz + classical room are noteworthy exceptions, and at least one employee had an impressive knowledge of 20th Century Avant Garde). But where Amoeba fails for me is in pricing. The prices on used cds are often priced with collectors in mind, as though the pricing at the buyer's counter has been done with the Goldmine Price Guide. The video department upstairs is even worse. A cursory glance at Amazon will reveal 50-70% lower pricing via the affiliates program of Amazon sellers. If you are willing to comb the bargain bins for a few hours you can definitely score, but if you weigh the cost of your time, what did you really pay for that Posie's promo disc?
Still, when you calculate postage or time and gas, it's nice to have a store such as this where you can cross off 3/4 of your wantlist under one roof. They also publish a digest of employee suggestions which is good business. There is a small underground lot with free parking, and the Arclight lot next door always has available spaces for a couple bucks (I usually choose to visit Ameoba when attending an Arclight film screeening to kill two birds with one stone). I think that the pros outweigh the cons, and this is a great place to take an out-of-towner who is a music fan or cinophile, but I much prefer to frequent specialty shops like Canterbury Music in Pasadena or Vacation Vinyl in Los Feliz/Silverlake -shops that are truly independent. -

My friend and I decided to check out Amoeba because we had some time to kill before a movie at the Arclight dome across the street. I had heard of Amoeba but never been to one, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect.
They have a wide range of music, films, posters, books, etc. They even sell record players!
We snagged Starsky & Hutch for $2.16. Not bad!
I'll definitely consider Amoeba Music when I wanna look for good deals. :) -
Review from Les S.
I don't think there's a better record store than Amoeba in So. Cal. The selection is overwhelming and they have categories that you can't find in other stores. They have a great selection of vinyl, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, VHS, music memorabilia, t-shirts, toys, and accessories. I can easily spend 10 hours in here without getting bored. My visits are usually short because I only come here when I'm waiting for a movie at Arclight, but one of these days I will have to dedicate an entire day to just browsing through their selection. This place is pretty dangerous for me.
You will find some very rare and out of print stuff here. I knew I should've snagged that Ministry "With Sympathy" CD when I had the chance but I hesitated and now I can't find it. But even when you can't find something you want, it's kind of exciting to come back every once in a while to see if that out of print item is in the used section. You may even find some decent stuff in their $1 section.
The place doesn't look fancy or anything. In fact, it's kind of grimy and has that old record store feel which is pretty cool.
Don't forget to check the website for live event schedule. They have parking underground but it's pretty tiny. I just park in the Arclight and 24 Hour Fitness structure. -

Parking can be tricky here. Try parking in the small lot in the back. Lots of tree huggers around before you enter, so just try to ignore them or don't.
never come for CDs so I don't know much except that they have MANY.
DVDs are great here. You'll find things you never seen before, things you miss and normal items. For some reason the normal items are much much more expensive than at a regular store. That is why I only come for electric items that I can't find anywhere else like anime, foreign films and certain documentaries.
Everything is broken up by genre, but digging is still necessary.
It's also a cool place to be even if you're just browsing. They have tons but not everything, so don't be disappointed and just have an open mind to new things.
Oh and they have an amazing and CHEAP VHS selection!
Thing with this place is just patience and power to search! -

I LOVE Amoeba, I really do. I love that they have everything you can possibly think of in terms of movies, vinyls, Cd's, and records. I just love it all.
I came here last weekend with the manly man of mine to pick out some movies since we wanted to be gay and stay in. We came and first got Dazed and Confused, along with House. Now, I was itching about House forever since the cover always attracted me and looked demonic. We Finlay got it on Blu-Ray. I purchased it for $25.00. Came up to be $27.00 and something cents at the cash register. We pay, leave and drive off.
It turns out that I ended up not liking the movie as much as I thought I would. So I got my receipt and saw that there was a 7 day return policy. Not nowhere in that receipt said that they won't reimburse you 100% back. It did say * *NO CASH BACK, STORE CREDIT ONLY * *. I figured, what the hell! I'll just get another movie, right?
I go back and return it. When I get to the returns trade window, the man who helped me informed me that they only give * * 75% * * back in store credit. So from the $27.00 that I paid, I only got $18.00 back. -_- That made me upset a little. Cooooooool, I basically paid $9.00 to rent the movie? How fucking convenient, right?
Anyway, I don't hate this store, I really don't. But I did hate that they screwed me over for $9.00 -_- -

I'm a big fan of this place, when I come to LA this is one of the places that is a must go. One thing that I don't like...is that when I come here I can't walk out without just one CD. But you can't help it they have an amazing selection and you find artist that you normally can't find in stores or you would normally have to special order.
When I come here I find myself spending hours here because of how big this place I feel like I haven't looked at everything. Especially since this place is two floors! The second floor is all movies and I would like to take a closer look at their movie selection next time I go; but I just get sucked in their music selection alone! -

Amoeba Music.....the mecca of music lovers, fanatics, collectors, obsessives.
You can get lost in a store like this. 2 stories of music, movies and overall amazing atmosphere. Pictures don't even do this place justice.
I try to come here at least once a month, and I'm always in the store for AT LEAST 2 hours browsing all the aisles grabbing whatever I can.
I love that I can bring in all my old CDs, records and DVDs that I no longer want to stare at or have tainting my collection and they'll give me a reasonable amount of money in credit or cash in return.
If you're looking for the last great record store in Southern California, you've found it in Amoeba Music. -

Absolutely love this place!!! You can spend hours and hours here and feel like you haven't even scratched the surface of the collection they have at Amoeba! Probably because you haven't! Find your CDs, DVDs, movies and TV shows. Find all genres of so many types of media! I've been going more recently for vinyls (no, not those Disney collectibles!!!) and I'm worried I may go (even more) broke if I continue to go too regularly! Good thing I'm safely 40+ miles away in OC!
For you retro hipsters, they even have 8 track tapes! Good luck finding parking. Don't give up, though! You won't be disappointed! -

This is one of the last great music/video stores left. They have a wide selection of new and used CDs/DVDs and a fairly helpful staff.
There are also occasional live music acts here.
The location is poppin', as it is next to the Arclight/Cineramadome right on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. They have their own free parking lot in the back.
This is a place where you can revel in browsing through music, movies, collectibles, and posters for several hours. -
Review from Tanya D.
Amoeba really isn't my thing - with little to no physical space for music set aside and no stereo save the one in my car, I keep my musical endeavors digital. That being said, one tipsy afternoon in the Hollywood Area had the boyfriend and I venture to Amoeba to check out the latest choons. Saturday afternoon and this place was plenty packed - there were even other people in the electronic music section.
I didn't spend TOO much time here, but I got two CDs for around $9 and although they were busy, the employees handles their ish and the line was taken care of really quickly and everyone was friendly (even when I spaced out in line and didn't go up to the register right away ... yes I know that makes me THAT person, but I'd just been drinking tequila so give me a break!).
I wouldn't go out of my way to go to Amoeba but if in the area, I'd definitely buy some more cheapo CDs. -

america's largest independently owned music store is HUGE...like warehouse huge...and it still delivers on the personal touches a smaller record shop would...
i have to admit...i nerd out whenever i come here...vinyl as far as the eye can see...CD's, fan gear, DVD's...whatever you need as a media junky...not just a music head...
staff is knowledgeable...seems like they have a resident in every specific genre...upstairs has an impressive film selection while the massive main part of the store is dedicated to music...
the only thing it's missing from being a complete music mecca is the sale of instruments...and even then you'll find headphones, mp3 players, the odd turntable, and some slip mats...
if i could...i'd convert the upstairs into a live-in loft and never leave... -

There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said. This place is great. Two-Floors of merchandise to look through. Lots of rare and Out Of Print Stuff that is impossible to find besides buying it on ebay for a lot of money. I never come into this place looking for a certain album. I just come here with at least an hour to spare and look. I always end up finding a bunch of albums to add to my collection. Whatever genre of music you are into they will have it here. Also, the live bands performing are always enjoyable to watch. A great experience and I recommend this place to any music lover.

Amoeba rocks! But you already knew that, didn't you?
The employees are super friendly and they engage in very cool community outreach... Amoeba hosts pet rescue adoptions in-store and pays no mind when one of them has a little "accident" on the floor. Management who coordinated the event says patrons are welcome to bring their dogs into Amoeba and some of them even keep treats behind the counters for their frequent canine visitors.
So, it's two paws up for Ameoba and their pet policy. -

My only complaint is that it is so big that sometimes I feel overwhelmed. That being said though, they have a selection that can't be beat, with all sorts of obscure titles that bring me back to my embarrassing angst filled teen years (in a good way). The people who work there are surprisingly down to earth and friendly, not total douche bag hipster record snobs like you might expect. I wish I lived just a tad bit closer so I could spend more money here on vinyl and used CD's (now I sound like a douche bag hipster record store snob, whoops).

I am actually writing this for when I was in LA from Vancouver last year. I love records and there is something for everyone from new material to used stuff in favourable formats. The store is huge and I was overwhelmed. If you're a tourist, be prepared to spend over an hour looking through stuff. If you're an electronica fan, they have many sub sections that not only overwhelmed, confused and appreciated but there was a small part of envy for me. I go every year with a list, however, come out with twice as much stuff that isn't on the list. I am a horror movie fan and they have one of the best horror movie used selections that I have seen. I love the staff, they are so awesome to shoot the shit with.

Not for music snobs. I guess they can add 10 bucks just because its "at amoeba" but after that LA weekly article where they unashamedly went on and on how they bust heads and hate when people who know what their stuff is worth come in and have been helping junkies get their fix for a decade by ripping them off i dont see how anyone goes there. And what the hell happened to the blues vinyl section? You cant listen to muddy or bukka on a cd, it doesnt sound right. I wish i could remember the name of that hole in the wall record shop on Hollywood Blvd (its in an alcove off the NE corner of highland if anyone knows what im talking about) Now THERES a record store. Ooh or Atomic on magnolia in Burbank. If i really want a vintage Greatful Dead poster or rolling stone bobble head ill get it on ebay for half what Amoeba's asking.
They have music, movies, magazines, knick knacks, vintage posters, and while the selection is massive, its really expensive. Even the represses are high dollar. I know its an LA thing to price the hell out of everything but damn.
Saving grace, the used section. if you have time to kill you can occasionally find a gem or two. -

After watching a documentary about Minnie Riperton on Unsung, I was touched by her story. I didn't know Maya Rudolph was her daughter. So one night I decided to go down to Amoeba Music to pick up her CD.
I have been to Amoeba Music many of times and yes once again this review is long overdue along with a lot of my other reviews as well.
If you are an music aficionado, this is the place to be. From one genre to another, they have it here. The staff was friendly in assisting me in locating my CD's that I was looking for. There was at least 10 cashiers behind the counter ready to check me out. The lady that helped me behind the counter was nice and friendly.
So if you're in the Sunset area, you have to check out this place. It's worth going in and taking a peek inside. -

What the..
Why oh WHY did I come here only an hour before closing? Biggest regret of my life.
I'm pretty sure I need to move in next door and secure a well paying job and spend all of my money here. All of it. Every last penny.
I didn't even get through half the CD section before it was time to go. I need to come back to LA so I can spend a day in here going through the vinyls and the DVDs.
There are tons of limited edition or out of print/production collections at the back of the store for what seem like reasonable prices. An entire floor of DVDs, and the tiny section I managed to get a glance at before leaving was organized by director. Neat!
I ended up finding 3 cds I wanted. But I bet I could have found waaay more had I not picked the worst time on the planet to come here.
Great store! Definitely visiting next time I'm in town!Listed in: El Lay

The best tip I can give is bring a list. The store can get overwhelming if you are browsing. Although, sometimes browsing is exactly what I want to do when I have a few hours to kill.
Secondly, come often and keep searching the used section over and over; you'll find that rare thing you've been searching for eventually
Also, park in the arclight lot and get it validated by your cashier. We always park on the top floor at night as it has one of the most amazing views of Hollywood and it's less crowded.
I love Amoeba. It's where my husband and I had our first date and where he proposed to me. -

As far as selection goes, the best record store in the world. I only really buy Vinyl here. They have a gigantic selection with prices that are moderate to expensive, but this is acceptable. I do find that Jazz selection lacking however. Parking isn't as bad as it seems. If you just wait in line for the garage at peak times it will only take 10 minutes.

How can I not give this place 5 stars. While I do somewhat favor the San Fran location - perhaps because it was the first Ameoba experience I had - Nothing beats Los Angeles.
First of all, the selection is endless - I'm in it for the vinyls, but if Cd's are your thing, you won't be disappointed.
I love it because you never know what you're gonna find. Jazz, Hip Hop, Classical, Standards, Blues, Rock, Pop - it's all there. LOVE to shop clearance - some days it treats me better than others, but there is nothing like walking away with 12 vinyls for 6 bucks!
Great downtown location too - right in the heart of LA. Parking can be a bit of a challenge but nothing to terrible. Staff is great. Just a great place to come together and enjoy the music :) -

This is probably the best record store I have found. They have everything and the store is huge. If you go give your self lots of time because to see the whole store takes a while. I go for the vinyl but they also have the best DVD selection up stairs. There are to other stores up in the Bay area but this one is by far the better of the three.

I really enjoy a relaxing Sunday afternoon trolling through the exceptionally long and incredibly rich aisles at Amoeba Music Hollywood.
The staff are aloof but if you address them they will help you. They know their stuff, everything from obscure imports to bootlegs.
Their video selection is a three star affair. it is adequate but nothing special, I'm sure that will cause controversy however a quick amazon search would crush pretty much all of their inventory and prices.
Parking is good for Hollywood. At least your not parking on the street.
The Arclight Cinema is in the same building so it creates a nice compliment to a shopping trip/movie afternoon.
