if you are looking for something as far as music of DVDs...look no further my friend, because this is the one stop shop for a huge amount of music that have been published.
Mini LPs,CDs, EPs, Laserdisc etc... it's all here.
The main suggestion i could make is that you should make a list of the music you are looking for before you go inside because it is almost overwhelming to try to think of something to look for when you are surrounded by every artist.
-This location is by far the best Amoeba, i have been to the other locations, and this one has the best selection out of any of them.
Im a musician and the fact I have never been in this legendary store is beyond me. I think maybe because when your so consumed in that area of your career you dont need any more of it?
Well, i went and checked it out last night and I was really stoked on this place. Its a little chaotic and crazy inside but there are some incredible deals on dvd's and music. I bought an HD-DVD of Planet Earth. Im excited to check it out. I wish they had a bigger selection but maybe Blu Ray is just owning that area, i dunno.
You will see every type of person in this place from all walks of live. It reminds me alot of the movie Empire Records.
The staff was very nice and helpful.
I totally suggest this place. One of the last record stores in the world
Amoeba Music has been on my LA List of things to do since I got here. It finally happened and I am addicted. I've never been a music aficionado, never really needed an ipod with me at all times, and never really noticed what was playing in the background of GENERIC coffee shop.
Stepping into Amoeba was like stepping into the movie, "Empire Records". The staff eats, breaths, and sleeps music. This was a real conversation I heard from a definite metal-head staff member, "oh you are referring to his earlier work before Run DMC. if you like that, you'll like....." WOW. they know their shit....
In real life, I am a mac monkey: a graphic designer that thrives on social media and everything "new". Before Amoeba, I would have told you that music stores were on their way out of existence. Downloading was in. iPod destroyed the CD. Now, I have about 10 new CDs in my car and the iPod is at home. There is even an underground parking garage.
Selling New and Used music, this place is a playground. I expected to see Warren [ER reference].
I went to the Hollywood Amoeba for the first time last week. I've been to the ones in SF and Berkeley but I think this is the best one of the three. Really good deals to be had here and has a huge selection of jazz. I only browsed the rock, discount and jazz sections before I had to leave because I couldn't carry anymore. Next time I'll be sure the browse the rest of the store. It is huge!
I LOVE Amoeba this is one location I can be in ALL DAY long browsing music and rediscovering lost finds on DVD's.
If you ever saw the movie "High Fidelity" or "Empire Records" then you can grasp what the staff at Amoeba is like... they live, eat and breath music and movies and there is nothing more enjoyable to me then purchasing from a place that employees people who have a passion for their jobs!
Also I have taken my used CD's and DVD's there and gotten money real hard cash!! I've been to this location as well as the one in Berkley both are AWESOME! they have an extensive poster collection that is so cool. The selection is endless! They have vinyl!!! and obscure crap that you can't find anywhere odds are you can probably find it here.
Respectfully Reviewed
this place is hit or miss my advice if you are stuck dealing with these 20 something hipster nazi's ask for a supervisor management apparently they know something about music

walmart of music stores
everything product wise
horrible customer service
"We're glad to be playing at Amoeba tonight, at what is probably the last surviving record store in the universe."
That is how an in store concert began at Amoeba. It was about half a year ago. I went to see to see a duo, half of which was made up of Dhani Harrison, son of Beatle, George Harrison. They were called "thenewno2". (Not a typo. It really is all squashed together.)
They were quite all right, but not a must download .... er ... buy. ... hopefully at Amoeba itself. Both guys were very personable. They had great banter between songs.
But the review isn't about them it's about Amoeba.
Dhani Harrison, who's certainly traveled the world, opened his set by saying that: "We're glad to be playing at Amoeba tonight, at what is probably the last surviving record store in the universe."
Pretty amazing, and sadly, close to true.
Amoeba is my music store fantasy, whorehouse, liberation! You can find everything you're looking for, from vinyls to foreign films to all of the Pat Benatar CDs you've been hoarding (I won't judge...) I was so pleasantly surprised when I found out the 400 Blows, a French New Wave gem. Alas, it was $35, but still, amazing find! They have posters, books, television show DVDs, movie sound tracks, rare collections. New items, used items, make-you-go-crazy items. I am getting excited just writing this entry!!!!!!!
The staff is ridiculously helpful and the store has even compiled a little booklet detailing the music recommendations of the staff in all three Amoeba stores, if you need some new music in your life, two stories' worth!! They also have in-store perfomances and guests, for your live viewing pleasure. Oh hug me, Amoeba! Enclose me in your musical rapture!
A great store overall with a couple of minor blind spots that I feel the need to point out because I'm a dick. The country vinyl section is kind of weak considering just how much country vinyl is out there. It's not a "poor" selection, it's just not as good as it should be at a store like this. And the blues section is pretty bad, I think. I've scored some Little Walter and Howlin' Wolf there, but I think it could be a little better. I dunno, maybe I'm just spoiled on that front being from Chicago.
The good: everything else.
For the throw back generation, Amoeba is Candyland. The rare finds and superior collections are worth the trip from Temecula. Forget Amazon and Ebay, if you want to find some legitimate hip-hop this is the spot. But if you're claustrophobic or afraid of crowds, then shop online, because this place is ridiculous.
Last time I was there, I got to chat with Planet Asia. You will find what you're looking for here and you may even run into a pseudo celeb.
Get in where ya fit in...
Best record store in LA. You can find practically any artist.
The used music selection is just as broad and diverse as the new stuff. My favorite section is the Metal section; you can find pretty much any band that is hard to find in mainstream music stores (if any of them are still around). The prices aren't so bad and you can find anything from CD's, tapes, vinyls, hard to find posters, etc.
The movie/TV is smaller but just as great. So many titles to choose from.
My only problem at Amoeba is the parking. The small lot in the back is so small that it fills up quickly, and you have to make sure that you don't stay more than 2 hours or a guy will walk and write your license plates down. The underground parking is just as crowded and the waiting time can get bad. It's best to go early hours. You might just be lucky for parking.
Overall Amoeba deserves a 5 star rating. Great music, affordable prices, awesome staff. You can never walk out without making a purchase.
There are either no independent records stores left in the Los Angeles area, or they are too small to be relevant. However, Amoeba is the last stand for your neighborhood music shop's fight against big business.
In the past few years, both independent and brand name records stores have bit the dust: Penny Lane, Tower Records, Sam Goody, and Virgin Megastore. Now you only have a choice of finding a neighborhood gem, Best Buy, or going online to get your music fix.
My fear was that Amoeba was going to not survive the recession or even the internet music boom. However, it was way too big and influential to fail. It is, perhaps, the most well known and best record store in Los Angeles providing one of the biggest selections for a brick and mortar establishment. Not only do they have CDs, but they have DVDs, special collector items, posters, and even a gigantic selection of vinyls. If you cannot find it, they try to get it for you.
However Amoeba LA does have its faults. It is gigantic and sort of a monstrosity. Finding something by yourself is equally as difficult. Compared to their Norcal brothers, this Amoeba really lacks instore gigs, which really gave them their fame to begin with. it is kind of sad to see that all the artists that are worthwhile only peform at the SF store. And a brighter note, the gigs are always free to the public.
It is like being like a kid in a candy store, except all the candy are records. And all the kids here either haven't showered lately or suffering from musically-induced diabetes.
Best record store in the greater-LA area.
Fine used CD selection and some obscure items, as well.
Make sure you have some time and money to spend, if you decide to visit!
Amoeba is music mecca. It took six days to create the earth and then on the seventh day, God rested and went to Amoeba for some new tunes.
I love that they have a parking lot under the building. Parking is very easy here.
When all other record stores slip into irrelevance, I pray that Amoeba stays right where it is, standing bright and wonderful, a tribute to the consumer's love of music. The drive down Sunset wouldn't be the same without it, and where would I go to kill time before shows at the Arclight?
I was seventeen when I first stepped foot into Amoeba, and I still remember the awe I felt scanning the aisles and aisles of music, the walls and walls of posters, every square inch of the place defying description beyond the adolescent yips of "sweet," "awesome," and "cool." I can't count the number of hours I've spent here, just browsing and enjoying the atmosphere.
Frankly, I worry that Amoeba won't stick around for my children, that this seminal record store experience will become a relic of the days before iTunes. Which is why I encourage you all to keep going and buying your CDs here. I don't care if every other record store in existence meets its end with a sigh of resignation - let's save this one.
Amoeba doesn't really need me for its 10 millionth review, but so be it.
I'll leave it to others to whine about the parking situation and the prices. I parked at a meter on a side street and walked. And frankly, I didn't find the prices to be that bad. In fact, there are many sections of records, CDs, etc. which were priced at bargain-basement levels.
The great thing about Amoeba is the overwhelming selection. The really great thing about Amoeba is the incredible energy in the place. Everyone is running around and frantically rummaging through CDs, posters, and other items. It was just a really great, exciting feeling.
And yes, you could easily spend hours here, so plan accordingly.
One of the very few paces left to find good music.
Maybe Im one of the few, but I miss the days of trouncing threw
the isles of cd's looking for that $9.99 gem.
Can still do here!
My wallet does not like this place. Let's just leave it at that.
Every time I find myself heading to/in Amoeba I'm playing Adolescent's "Amoeba" in my head.
A-MEE-Bah. A-MEE-BAH. A-Mee-BAAAAA-AH. AMOEBA!AMOEBA!AMOEBA!AMOEBA!AMOEBA!
Enough.
I love and hate Amoeba because they have so much.
THEY HAVE SO MUCH I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START LOOKING! AND I ALWAYS FEAR OF SPENDING ALL MY MONEY ON MUSIC AND DVDS! WAH!
But obviously, I think I could find almost everything here. Satiate my wild desire for underground and cult movies that I could not find on the internet!
Did you also know that you could buy any poster displayed on the wall?
You just gotta ask someone that works there.
But I probably wouldn't because they are these cool hipsterkids with a "I got a stick up my ass because growing up in the burbs and went to a private school was hard. Hard in the sense that it makes me lose my street cred" attitude.
No, I'm cool, I can find that Cihuatl-Ce album I've been looking for and can't find anywhere.
Their zine selection needs to improve...
AMOBEA!AMOEBA!AMOEBA!AMOEBA!
At one time I really liked them. I bought CD's, got tired of 'em, then took 'em back for trade. This went on for a long time. But then it got to where I felt like they were screwing me on the tradebacks. They got too picky on my tradeins and I've never gone back. Now I buy my CD's from Amazon and I don't have to leave the house.
This store has a great selection of music ranging from various genres.
They carry a large selection of CD's, cassette tapes and vinyls all aisled up on two floors and several individual racks. They sell memorabilia, knick knacks and other items.
This store also has a listening station.
Parking is either in the garage nearby or along the street.
Some music buffs might argue with me about the 5 star rating and I might have disagreed with myself just a few years ago when I was living in upstate New York and had encountered a small music boutique shop that had such an amazing selection of several wonderful artists with even a vinyl listening station. However, this place is not shy from being 5 stars either.
I was here around March-April of 2008.
I just feel like giving everything 5 stars. :)
This place is huge!
I walked in and expected to only see music upon music, but then I looked up and noticed the upper floor with movies upon movies. The elevator is beyond awesome (odd thing for me to be reviewing since I have a huge fear of elevators).
You can find almost anything here and the prices are pretty good, too.
OMG! A music connoisseur's sanctuary. Not only do I effin' love Amoeba Music because of their ginormous, super cool, big in variety, affordable selection of music, but they have the best FREE shows.
I recently saw Elvis Costello there and it was just amazing! That guy is is just pure awesomeness wrapped up in a smooth suit. I was thoroughly impressed with the sound at Amoeba, not too shabby. I was able to hear Costello loud and clear and the instrumentals were on point, not over-powering the vocals.
The views are decent, I'd say if you come early you get the best spots, but that's not true. I came in early and had a pretty crappy spot with a big ole pole obstructing my view. After holding my urge to pee for some 15 minutes, I finally gave in and jammed across the street to Jack in the Crack knowing that I may loose my place and end up with an even worse one. Surprise, surprise! When I came back, they stuck me in a killer isle ("used rock" I think) where I had a great view.
Additionally, Amoeba has a ton of new and old school concert posters to dress up your walls. I always have a fun time flipping through all the posters and screeching: "oh, no way!," "Dude, I remember this!", "God, I wish I grew up in the 60's -70s"... the posters take you back to another musical era and I love it.
Parking is a baish though!
Alrighty so Ameoba....hmmm. Well my friends took me here last night, after mentioning how great it was about a dozen times! Maybe the anticipation killed it for me. I dunno. I wasn't blown away.
The selection is awesome and that includes vinyls. However, the prices blow! At least every other time I picked up a rare DVD it was at least $10-$15 over priced! Maybe you LA lifers are used to paying these prices but, it doesn't have to be like this, trust me.
I should probably give it another try. And I will....when I have $100 to blow on DVDs and music.
Is it really necessary for me to be the 492nd person to write a review about Amoeba? No, but I am! This place has always been an insane record shop. Always crowded and a little intimidating if your not a crowd person. Seen many good free in store performances before here which is fun! Always spent too much here. If your a music nerd and you come prepared with a list as I do it is a given that you will spend too much. Love the used section. Tons of stuff. And helpful staff! I was looking for Sebastien Tellier's earlier album
"L' Incroyable Verite". Since I have moved about four times since his first album came out I have somehow in my moves misplaced this CD and others for that matter. I was shocked to see that they didn't have it in stock. They had his most recent album "Sexuality" but nothing else. The chick that helped me try to find it was super nice. Not a pretentious asshole thinking she was too cool because she worked here! In the end I ended up filling my list finding some imports of Jacques Dutronc and Serge Gainsbourg. Oh, the new soundtrack for "Where The Wild Things Are" all music written and preformed by Karen O and the new Phoenix album and some other stuff... I always spend too much when I am in here!
That saying that Amoeba has everything.. MMM not true.. Amazon does!
Edgar tastes amazing and also has amazing taste.
For the former, ask the ladies. Oh snap! Ha ha - just playin'.
For the latter, ask Edgar's poker buddies. Before Edgar started mixing CDs for the occassional Texas Hold 'Em smackdowns, Edgar's tribe of trogs would always bag on each other mercilessly using the dull side of their rapier wit for the whickity-whack tunes being played on whoever's Ipod happened to be plugged into the player.
Then one day Edgar said "Enough of this sh*t" and started burning a handful of CDs that have since been in the rotation - actually they have been THE rotation - and believe Edgar music... good music... does soothe the savage beasts. As does copious amounts of alcohol (but that's for another review).
That's why Edgar likes Amoeba. They have some deep deep deep crates that Edgar can spend hours... HOURS... digging through. And they also have cheap music too sometimes. And on hot summer days they have air-con.
Another bonus is that it's walking distance from Edgar's crib, so why not spend a couple of hours there instead of being a couch potato?
You may wonder: what does Edgar listen to? While Edgar likes to jam to everything (Tuvan throat singing anyone? Yes please. Gregorian chants? Raise the roof, y'all), Edgar particularly likes good old fashioned Black music - Rhythm and Blues, Bebop Jazz, Funk, Rap, Reggae, Rocksteady, Gospel and Ska -- you know, the music of struggle.
And when Edgar finds a compilation that includes Nina Simone, OV Wright, Ann Peebles, AND The Meters, then brothers and sisters, there's gonna be a dance party at Casa Del Edgar tonight! And don't be spilling none of that cherry wine on my carpet!
(Does the George Jefferson swivelly hip and ankle dance)
So go to Amoeba Records, cause we all gotta support the indie, mom-and-pop shops 'fore the mega-chains swallow them up.
Four stars!
("Get up on this! Now push it... push it reeeeeall good")
P.S. Actually Edgar does despise a lot of the cacophonic swill that passes for music these days on broadcast radio. Maybe that's why Edgar spends so much time digging through Amoeba's crates to find hidden auditory gems that somehow got drowned out by the goofy noise on the radio.
The last great music store on Earth, in my opinion. I usually try to visit Amoeba at least once a year.
They carry everything even the most hard to find artists. Parking, again, sucks, but whatever. Who cares. It's worth it.
The sales people (is that PC enough) are awesome... So once again, like a majority of my reviews, I love this place.
Everyone must go to Amoeba Music at least once in their lifetime...
do you love movies or music?
there's nothing else to say. you'll find everything you want here, and i mean EVERYTHING.
Love for Music + Amoeba Music = Music Heaven!!!
Music Heaven is what Amoeba Music is...and now you can imagine what Amoeba Music looks like... Yeah, that's right!
If you can't find that album at your local music shop or store, then you need to head down to Amoeba Music because they will most likely carry it there. I have found some hard to find albums there, new and used. The used albums i have purchased here have been mostly in great shape and dirt cheap, so you can't complain!
Not only do they sell Cd's, Vinyl's, etc... here but they also, sell movies. They have a great collection of new and used movies on the second floor. Also, sometimes they will have live performances at the store.
If you're a music lover, then you need to check out Amoeba Music!
It's a music lover's dream. You can pretty much find any style of music here and there's a really knowledgeable staff to help you if needed. I've bought many cds (mostly used) and records (mostly from the dollar bin) from Amoeba which remains the only record shop that gets me out to buy records anymore. It's a great place to bring music loving friends who're in from out of town. Parking is a pain though.
If you don't like Amoeba then you don't like music...
or movies...
or stuff...
...and shut up.
I was always a fan of Tower Records, but since they went out of business, I love Amoeba Music because they always have such a great and extensive selection of both new and used CDs, DVDs, etc. I love to browse through their many racks and titles and I always manage to find something to buy. They carry a lot of special editions and imports, too.
Although the parking garage isn't real big, it didn't take too long to wait for someone to leave and then to find a spot. When in the Hollywood area, you must stop at Amoeba to do some browsing!
Rules for shopping at Amoeba:
1. Never, ever, ever go to Amoeba with a list. You will likely not find what you are looking for, unless it is a commonly found piece of media. Every single time I bring an extensive list here I leave disappointed, though I'm mostly looking for more obscure items. Every single time I go to Amoeba without a list, I find many treasures I never expected to find. I prefer making awesome discoveries to accepting small defeats.
2. Buy used. Their prices on new merch sucks, plain and simple. I'm all for supporting the brick & mortar shopping experience, but I refuse to pay list price for a DVD I can get at Best Buy for $10 less. They almost always have used copies of everything, even new titles thanks to all the promo product, so don't waste money on those "white stickered" items.
3. Grab a basket. I know you won't buy that much stuff, but you're likely to find so much that you'll end up filling it to the top. Then comes the painful process of selecting which titles get a new home and which ones are sent back to the asylum.
That's about all you REALLY need to know. This is a great place to shop, meet fellow geeks, sell back your used/stolen/promotional media and soak up the ambience of a dying breed: the true record store.
This is definitely a store I don't get around to much. But if I lived in Hollywood this store would definitely be a weekend fix for me! I purchased a used Reggae Trojan Box Set mixed CD for about 8 bucks there! It was a definite rarity of reggae music compilation I've ever bought, especially for it being used and being in great condition. This is truly the place for good used music!
I have so many emotions about amoeba. sometimes I am so wonderfully amorous of this place, and sometimes I just really fucking hate it. but I think that there's more love than hate. yeah.
honestly, amoeba is a big part of my life. I've been directly introduced to so much new music here, and when I find out about a musician through other mediums, I can usually, actually, almost always, expect to find it here. their selection is truly unbeatable. obscure is not a common word here. and the free in-store performances are great too (although, be sure to check if you'll need a wristband or not). a trip to amoeba is almost like mini-disneyland for me.
but amoeba is also cruel in its own ways. never expect to find something you want, because stuff flies off the shelves here, quick. the staff are sometimes moody or completely unhelpful, and the patrons are sometimes rude. but that's to be expected. and it's no fun that all the rare stuff is on the walls. but what can you do?
amoeba is just the exaggerated epitome of a record store. I've spent so many countless hours browsing and crawling all over this place. and I treasure every last one.
Well, after last nights experience... I figured this place deserved a re-evaluation. Amoeba has been downgraded from a 3 star to a 2 star establishment.
A few days ago, I saw the sign outside that said Tarantino was going to be at Amoeba on the 20th. I thought, "sweet! I can get Jackie Brown signed and geek out for a night."
When I got there, I was looking for the line to wait for Tarantino. I asked an employee where the line was. They said there was no line for me. I had to buy in advance the Inglorious Bastards soundtrack, the movie ticket to the midnight screening, and a guaranteed spot in line to get his signature on one item of choice. I think I was metaphorically "cock-blocked". I wasn't alone though. There were a bunch of people standing on the second floor hoping to take a far-away peek at Tarantino because they were also denied access to the line. I think the highlight of my night was finding a special edition copy of Howard the Duck for 10 bucks.
Now, I have no issues with buying stuff to wait in line for a celebrity. But to have only a limited number of people allowed to wait in line to sign only one item? That's both weak and lame. This is Tarantino. He is the finest example of geek. He would appreciate and understand that there's a mass of people out there willing to wait hours (if not days) just to get his John Hancock. I think it would have been better to sell "guaranteed" spots, but still allow others to wait in line for at least the chance to meet him. Otherwise, it just felt so.... elitist.
Just for comparisons sake, let me tell you that it was much cooler when Spike Lee was signing autographs at Virgin Megastore. All you had to do was buy one item and you get to stand in line. There was no limit to the number of people in line. He even signed multiple items for you. Virgin... I wish you were still open in Hollywood.

Pretty much everything has been said about Amoeba.
No doubt the best record/dvd/video game store in L.A with Tower long gone.
There is this one annoying guy that works there, I forget his name but there's always one.
Whenever friends are in from out of state I take them by and they are amazed.
The Tarantino "Inglorious Bastards' night was kinda badly managed but there are always other celebrity appearances there.
Overall it's a great place to visit.
This Amoeba store is the 2nd one I've ever been to. The 1st one I ever went to was in the Bay Area and I loved it! When I found out that there was one in Hollywood, I had to check it out! I LOVE the whole vibe of this store along with it's really helpful workers and new/used products!
I actually recently found a SIGNED Lupe Fiasco "The Cool" Vinyl record that a record company or someone who didn't really care for Lupe turned in to Amoeba! I got it for only $20!
They also carry cool toys, OLDSCHOOL VIDEO TAPES and even FOREIGN FILMS! If you are ever in any town that has an Amoeba Records, you HAVE to check it out! You will end up spending more money than you expected~!
Bushels of hard to find classic country CDs available here! Bill Shaver, Hank Jr, Tom Hall and rows of Cash and Emmylou. Amoeba tenders a vast collection of rare finds in every style of song- blues, classic, reggae, (c)rap. Tastefully decorated with vintage and modern concert posters from roof to linoleum floor. LA Magazine sponsored a tournament of champion symbols of Los Angeles. Amoeba took the gold medal, ahead of The Getty, Griffith Observatory, and The Sun. This record store won because it represented the "melting pot", the mosaic of cultures and sexualities that is LA. But in the liquid age of I- Tunes and torrent piracy, who knows how much longer Amoeba will be open for business? Drop in before it's too late! Every week The Big A hosts free concerts- not recommended for claustrophobes. Parking blows. On Cahuenga next to the one and only Arclight Theater....
Amoeba continues to promote vinyl music "the once and future king, that stands the test of time." Their webpage gushes on, "that luscious black plastic, those dusty grooves, the full technicolour cover art, the rich vibrant sound, the collectability. Amoeba sells thousands of LPs, 12" singles, 45s and 78s. http://www.amoeba.com/...
The guys over at Vinyl Solution said it best:
This is the Wal-Mart of independent music stores.
They got a good selection and decent prices for most items, but they are staffed by a shadowy group of music elitists who will put a $20 price tag on an out of print Unsane CD. Huh?!?!? What the?!?!? Fuck you.
I bought it.
Oh and this one time, I pissed off this black guy who worked there because I thought he worked in the Rap/Hip-Hop section at the store. He actually worked in the House/Trance music section. Whatever dude, I might be racist but at least I didn't pull your man card thinking you specialized in House/Trance music.
