Review from Lance F.
We have been using http://restaurant.com gift certificates to try places that are outside of our comfort zone or normal routine of dining establishments. I love Greek food but my wife, not so much. But, I talked her into trying Ammos for lunch one recent Friday afternoon.
Though the decor is a bit dated, the location is as good as it gets with an ocean view. Unfortunately on this Friday, it was about 40 degrees with a stiff wind coming in off the water. So, sitting inside was the only option. When we walked in, there were only two other tables occupied and like other reviewers, that concerned us a bit. But, we are glad we stuck it out. Our server, Sofia, was quite personable and very helpful in explaining the menu and what we might like. The service on this day was very good.
I love gyros and had that in my mind as I arrived but as we browsed the menu, we were on the lookout for something the wife would like. She's not an adventurous eater, for those new to my reviews!! In looking at the menu, the Meat Lovers Platter looked interesting because she does like steak and chicken kabobs. So, we ordered it. I also ordered a "small" greek salad. I say "small" because it was huge. Plenty of olives and feta cheese. It was a good salad, though I took most of it home for later that night.
The Platter was overall a hit. The steak and chicken kabobs were good. Nothing stood out about either but they were tasty. The gyro meat was good, so I did get my gyro fix. The keftedes, which I believe is the meatball, was nothing spectacular. It tasted like any other meatball would. Not bad, not great. For me, the pleasant surprise was the loukaniko, a Greek sausage. The menu describes it as being flavored with orange and cinnamon and that definitely was in there. It was such an unusual flavor but in a good way. I had certainly never had a sausage with the flavors of that one. I liked it alot. It also came with tzatziki sauce and pita bread. It was a nice platter.
The only real ding on the experience would be the price. Though the meat platter was enough to share, I am not sure it was worth the $28 price tag. So, the prices seemed a little high. But, then again, it's a restaurant in a touristy area, so I suppose that might be expected. But, we enjoyed the experience enough to go again. We would love to take the kids next time and sit out on the patio and enjoy some nice weather. And, I suspect we will do that at some point. -

I'm not gonna lie.... I was scared. There were no guests when we arrived & we had a groupon. BUT--- it IS the middle of winter on a random Tuesday night at the Oceanfront. I get it. OR--- I think i have watched too many kitchen nightmares. Thinking they made the food days ago and my veggies were sitting in a freezer molding.
Thank God, I was SO wrong. It took a bit for the food to come out... which, BTW people... is a GREAT sign. That means the food is fresh. The salad was decadently huge and the vegetables & feta fresh and delicious. The hubby had the Greek Burger and I, the veggie pita. The roasted zucchini inside was top notch. My Mom had the roasted veggie pasta special. (Which she enjoyed... although I can probably say that the pasta was not fresh)
Our server was kind & attentive. The decor is not cute, but I am thinking you don't notice during the day when you can watch the waves as you dine.
Without the groupon the prices are quite steep for the area. (In my opinion. But I am an NYC/LA girl) -

Dined here again this past week and I ordered (of course) the seafood platter, and it was just as amazing as it was my first 2 visits. The char-broiled flavor is simply to die for. I've ordered the platter 3 times now, and usually I can put down some food, but I haven't been able to finish it once. It's definitely big enough to split between 2 people. Service was again stellar. Still one of my favorite places to dine on the beach!

My husband and I had dinner here a couple of nights ago, and it was fantastic. We ordered a variety of appetizers: the lemon potatoes, feta with herbs, mediterranean olives, tatziki and pita, and small greek salads. Our waiter, Lyle, suggested we try the baklava for dessert, and said it really is different/better than what you typically find. Wow, was he right. It was not overly syrupy or sweet, but was just wonderful. To top off all the wonderful food and service, we were able to bring our own wine and were only charged a $5 corking fee. This restaurant is right on the beach, so there is a great view. Given the quality of the food, the sevice, the prices, and the location, this place is now my favorite restaurant in VA Beach.

So, we went at 6:20pm-ish prior to the bellydancing show on Saturday evening... The place was almost completely empty, but I had heard wonderful things and read great reviews, so I kept my spirits up that this would be a great experience. And it definitely was. The waiter was knowledgeable, made good recommendations, and was very friendly. The food was delicious, authentic, and had such rich flavors. My boyfriend had the euro platter, I had the mediterranean mahi, and we shared a hummus appetizer. All of it was delicious--especially the hummus!!! The bellydancing show was nice and lasted about 25 minutes with a live drummer. We enjoyed it and will likely go back again for the great views of the oceanfront and good entertainment. Very unique dinner setting, and a place I would definitely recommend to visiots in the area.

My husband and I were visiting Virginia Beach for a week. Prior to going, I found some certificates on http://restaurant.com. Ammos was one of the certificates that I got. My husband and I went on Monday night for dinner.
The restaurant is at 14th and Atlantic right on the beach, so the view during dinner was gorgeous! We walked down the boardwalk to Ammos from 9th and Atlantic. Ammos is right near the pier.
The menu is pretty extensive for a Greek Restaurant. We started with a appetizer of grape leaves ($7.95). I love grape leaves! These were right up there with the yummiest I've had!
I decided to get the Greek Combo ($20.95) which came with a small serving each of spanikopita, pastitsio, and moussaka. The spanikopita was very dry and not the type I'm used to. The pastitsio was really good! The moussaka had great flavor and a lot of meat. I thought that the price was a bit much for what you get.
My husband had the full portion of pastitsio ($16.95) which came with two sides. He picked the roasted potatoes and rice. (He likes carbs.) He said that both the potatoes and rice were very good!
I got a portion of my dinner to go. The waitress took my plate to box it up, but I discovered later that she actually did not box all of the items I had left. There was not pastitsio and only a small portion of the moussaka that I had left on my plate.
We never received our check detailing the amount due and service was a bit slow. We paid with the certificate and then they brought us back a slip to sign with our credit card. After our $25.00 off certificate, the price was still $37. I'm pretty sure they overcharged us on the tip and for each of the menu items.
The food was great, but based upon the slow service, to-go box, and the pricing, we would probably not return. -

Friendly staff. They were out of the fried zucchini, which greatly saddened me. So I went with the eggplant and octopus appetizer.
Unfortunately, both dishes were disappointing. In fact the only good thing was the baklava. I had high hopes based off the reviews here.
Great staff but they definitely missed the mark on the food. -

While walking along Atlantic for some good food, we came across this restaurant, and strolled in. To my surprise the food was amazing!! My bf ordered the lamb kabobs, his brother ordered the special which was swordfish and I ordered the gyro platter! I've had good gyro meat, but this was amazing! It wasn't dry like many other restaurants & yogurt based sauce wasn't watered down rather chunky and well marinaded. Overall it was a great meal. If you're in town-don't be fooled by the outside look!

I had a chicken gyro and my companion had the Greek salad. The gyro was pretty reasonable as the chicken was grilled perfectly. The salad was pretty blah and loaded with oil though. There is an al dente option facing the ocean which is nice.

Review from Zanna H.
After driving past this place on the Ocean front a couple of times we finally found it set back by the boardwalk. Upon entering we were greeted warmly by the hostess and given our pick of tables (it was empty since it was a week night an there were monsoon like rains outside). After getting situated our waitress who was very friendly, almost a little too friendly for my liking but still she was far from annoying or obnoxious, took our drink orders and ambitious appetiser order.
We ordered the mini sampler and the hummus since we had some first timers with us. The portions are huge! There was nothing "mini" about it, we got full size versions of their spanakopita (spinach & feta filled phyllo dough), tyropita (feta & cottage cheese filled phyllo dough), four dolmades (rice stuffed grape leaves), four keftedes (Greek {lamb?} meatballs) olives, and pita wedges. Everything on the sampler platter was very good. I prefer my tzatzki sauce to be thicker in consistency but that is a personal preference. Also the hummus was too sour and thick for my tastes but was definitely fresh made. By the time we finished the appetiser we were pretty stuffed but out came our entrees which were equally large in portion size. I ordered the Vegetarian platter which included another spanakopita, dolmades and tyropita, as well as their mousaka (layered eggplant & potatoes topped with bechamel sauce). Huge. I took 3/4 of it home. I had hungrily agreed to split that and the meat lovers platter with someone. It included both lamb & chicken kabobs, keftedes (tasted like lamb to me), gyro meat, and loukaniko (Greek sausage). All of the meats were very good. The stand out was definitely the chicken kabob which was well marinated and succulent.
Even though the food was good it was really only about a 3 star level. What bumps this rating up is the service as well as the unexpected live entertainment. I am not sure if they have it every night. We were there on a Wednesday night and were treated to a belly dancing performance. She took a tour of the room stopping by all of the tables for a bit before going outside to entertain the outdoor diners as well. Everything combined it made for a really enjoyable and entertaining night.Listed in: Neptune's Revenge!

I've only been here once, but I had the best horiatiki salad (like greek salad w/o the lettuce) I've had so far! Lots of big juicy vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, peperoncinis, olives, and feta cheese). The servers are friendly and attentive too. You can sit outside on a warm sunny day and stare at the ocean in the distance, unless...you don't like the ocean.

The Greek coffee was excellent. While the late lunch / early dinner we had was very good, I thought the portions were a little small for what we paid. Otherwise, I would go again!

I ate here tonight after walking around for a bit and decided this looked the best. The service was pretty good. The tzatkiki was amazing. The chicken dish we ordered was alright, not the best. The prices were decent, a little on the pricey side.
