Love the Food here.... I've tasted a number of the dishes and they are always superb. My reco is to read over the menu and follow your inner hunger.... what is your body asking for...? cuz this food is as nutritious as it is delicious...!
I asked how to pronounce it... and I can't remember...; P hmmmm maybe I need their 'get your brain back on track' soup.... What I do remember is that Amitabul means awakening or enlightenment.... I think it definitely fits (although I actually refer to this place as 'Bill & Daves') *groan* lazy american woman unwilling to remember the correct pronunciation...!
My only gripe, and this really is not aimed solely at Amitabul, is that I truly love the full experience of dining out (with or without friends) and part of that experience is the setting. I have yet to figure out why most of the veggie places I frequent seem to have forgotten that part.... almost as if paying attention to the space and decor is beneath them....
Pros:
some of the best food on the planet
nutrient dense
FLAVOR * FULL
easy parking (on street, but have never had a problem finding a spot)
Cons:
a bit out of the way
the decor/ambiance
Tip: It has an undistinctive store front and is easy to pass by when driving on Milwaukee.... it is almost directly across the street from Liberty Bank just south of Devon on the East side of the Stree. (oh god I hope I got my directions right....)
Amitabul is not your typical vegan resturant. There are no mock meats and the food is veggie, not tofu, based. These dishes are fresh and exciting, too good and too generous not to share. The flavors are complex and beautiful and loaded with fresh exciting vegetables and herbs to make a body feel good. I usually do takeout, but I've brought everyone I know here and we always leave happy.
Favorites: The Dark Side of the Moon is an amazing noodle dish and Steve's Super Shitake Wonder Noodle Soup is huge and ridiculously filling. It's packed with big, beautiful mushrooms, chewy rice cakes and plenty of vegetables. The Korean Soy Pancakes come with a mind-blowing aged miso sauce; between the veggies, texture and the sauces I think it's probably the perfect dish.
Oh! And Dr. K's Wonder Noodle Soup! It really does cure hangovers! In fact, it cleans out your whole system - so be prepared for that :)
Tibetan Curry, yes. Ginger citrus tea, yes. Healing Buddhist, yes. Blow-your-head-off spice, yes. Spiritual, yes. Vegan, yes. Hospitable hosts, yes. Dining environment, well, could use an upgrade to match the rest of the wonderfulness. I would love to see intimate spaces for dining groups instead of the bright lights and cafeteria booths.
Amitabul means 'Awaken' in Korean, and their food does just that to your palate and body, deliciously prepared dishes, large enough to share.
Wish this place had stayed on Southport, but it's worth the trek and come winter, the Cure all soup will be on my list of things to eat! It's not just for vegans, but if you're not into healthful dining this may not be your fave. It's one of mine !
Yum. Vegan Korean Buddhist tastiness.
Things I love: the energy stew (not the dr. k's one - the other one). Wolfman's Dream Treats
Things I like less: the Crunchy vibe. The cheesy hippie names for things that have real Korean dish names so you have to figure out what they mean, that they moved off southport and all the way up here. Needing to sell people on it quite so hard because between the dish names and the lack of a comfortable vibe, it's hard to get people to try it un-biased.
That said, been coming here for years and love this place. If I ever win the lottery and have crazy money to hire a personal chef, I either want the chef here or an Indian one to make all of my meals for me.
Wow. I'm newly vegan and newly Chicagoan (well, under two years), so I'm trying to work my way through all of the vegan and veggie places around town. Starting with the A's, and Amitabul.
I went here last night with my fiance, his brother, and my future in-laws, and I have never seen any of them eat so much. We ordered five dishes for the table: Buddha's 3 Luck, Wolfman's Dream Treats, Tempeh Veggie Stir, Maha Pyogo, and the Sweet Curry Noodle. Everything was a hit, even for two people who are generally squicked by mushrooms.
The Sweet Curry Noodle was, yes, sweet, without being cloying -- I could easily have eaten the whole thing and not gotten tired of the taste. The Tempeh Veggie Stir -- I usually HATE tempeh and stick with tofu or seitan, but this was superb. I was hunting through the veggies for tempeh bits I'd missed. The Buddha's 3 Luck had to be my favorite, though; the brown rice cake was perfectly chewy and the maple flavors made for an amazing combination with all the veggies.
Finally, their (home-made, I think I overheard?) green tea was superb, and a perfect accompaniment to full bellies. We'll definitely be back soon (which is saying a lot, considering the trek from Hyde Park!).
I live in Berkeley now, a vegan food mecca in its own right, but I dream about this place...more frequently than I perhaps should. Not usually a huge noodle person (which make up much of the menu), but everything is wonderful--tons of fresh veggies, interesting flavors, and lots of heat. The soups are always piping hot, and the sushi is mmmmm.
Atmosphere is in the style of "shitty deli" w/ small homages to Buddhism mixed in, but it's delicious, it's cheap, and the owners are lovely. Worth the drive.
Vegan Korean. Wow. Talk about a uniquely perfect match. It was a brisk night, so the bf and I decided to check this place out for dinner. We settled on Dr. K's Cure All Noodle Soup and the Zesty Noodles, and we both really enjoyed our dishes. The flavors and ingredients were absolutely delicious. The only drawback, though, is that this place made us start craving really traditional and/or meaty Korean food like kimchi jigae and bulgogi. Haha. Still, for a vegan twist on Korean food, this place is great.
So if you're cruising down Milwaukee...watch for the green awning. The red letters spouting Amitabul have long since worn off, but the green awning is still there.
Instant smile with the mystical naming on the menu. I had the Tibetan High Noon. It did, indeed, "kick me higher than high noon in my inner heart." They do spicy pretty well.
It is an all-vegan restaurant, but friendly to everyone's taste buds. Oh, and the juices are totally worth it. Tasty. The prices have gone up a little bit since the photos of the menu have been posted, but you can still get out of here around 12 bucks, including tip if you don't go crazy ordering appetizers and such.
I have both dined in and ordered carry out and both experiences immensely pleased my taste buds. I HIGHLY recommend the energy nut. It is outstanding!
Thank you Amitabul for being so delicious and kind to our four legged friends. I wish there were more vegan devoted establishments in Chicago.
Drop acid or become a hippy and you will LOVE this place... otherwise you will be happy and think it is delicious. It is up to you.
I ordered the Dark Side of the Moon. Yes, that's right. Pink Floyd. Good Pink Floyd, too. When Roger Waters was in the band and they wrote quality music.
I wasn't really sure when to start the Wizard of Oz, though. I must have started it too early because I ordered on the third lion roar... but my food didn't arrive until Dorothy woke up at the end. Sigh.
I got a sunset smoothie, too, but I don't have a good analogy about how it took forever for them to make it.
Both were good though and I look forward to going there again and ordering some other psychedelic-ly named dish that is 100% vegan and tasty. The wait was combated with soothing music and infinite refills of my water. Good thing the appetizer we ordered came out fast or I would have eaten the table.
Oh my goodness this is definitely a find! Not only is this place Vegan and health conscious, but the food tastes amazing (especially for being so healthy!). So I tried many things from here and I highly recommend all of them. I started with the green juice (can't remember the name but it had fruits as well as spinach and cucumber in it) and I was very impressed...my Vegan dining counterpart enjoyed their protein juice as well. The appetizer we chose, Vegan dumplings, was my favorite part of the meal! I can't believe they're Vegan and healthy!!! Finally for my meal I got the The Dark Side of the Moon (with rice noodles)...spectacular! My friend's dish was quite tasty as well and the rice cakes in their dish were so good! I will be here often and Amitabul is one of my new favorites here!
This place is the perfect relaxing meal. Fantastic food, laid back atmosphere and healthy. Every time someone comes from out of town I make it a point to bring them here for a fantastic meal.
The location is a bit of a challenge unless you live in the neighborhood, but is super close to the Blue line at jeff park.
Recommended!
Reason to go: The "Cure All" Soup. This thing is incredible, hot, spicy, full of delicious mushrooms, vegetables, and chewy noodles.
Conversation behind me: "oh that's too spicy. no that's too spicy. what should we get. [ asks guy what to get ]"... 15 minutes later. "SO WHERE DID YOU GO TO SHAMAN SCHOOL?"... few minutes later "it's the frequency of the ospital lobe. osbital? orbistal. you can heal it from anywhere". 10 minutes later "the problem is the guy goes to the doctor too much"... 5 minutes later "obahma.. [ something something conspiracy ]"...
Summary: also, get the "amitabul classic pancakes" too.
ps. Be prepared to take food home.
OH MY GOOD!
This place is amazing!
My sis took me tonight and it was just awesome.
We started with the Jade Maki...pretty good. Run of the mill veggie maki.
I ordered Wolfman's Dream Treats and she got the Sweet Curry Noodle both medium spicy.
I made a face when I first got my dish. I really wanted noodles and this was mostly veggies....once I tried it however I was hooked. The flavors were amazing and the nuts just really rounded out the dish.
My sister's dish was indeed a sweet spicy. I also really enjoyed it....a very different taste from mine but very yummy. I could taste the apples and the cranberries were yummy.
We traded dishes half way through and were just stuffed to the gills with enough to take home for tomorrow.
We tried the chestnut and maple cookies...at $2 a piece they seriously lacked for me. I am glad I tried them but I will likely not be getting them again.
Overall I was truly impressed with the place...not much of a looker but the food and the service was just phenomenal.
I will be back. Many many times! :-)
Well, now I have a new spot for lunch on my airport runs. Me vegan mate Thomas asked me to take us to lunch before I dropped him off at O'Hare for a flight to London. So I took the opportunity to go to Amitabul, which is just down the street from the very un-vegan Superdawg. My first question, though, is why would a vegan place be called A-Meat-A-Bul, and not A-Veg-ta-Bul?
Our lunch was fantastic. We ordered date tea and ginger tea, which were both quite the taste bud fiesta, and very warming and assuring on a cool afternoon. We ordered the dumplings or "pot stickers", the miso soup, a curried veggie mixture with nuts and mushrooms, and the mushroom bi bim bop. Now I am not a vegan, but I enjoy a great combination of flavors, and none of these dishes disappointed. Ordering the medium "heat" was perfect. It took me to the edge of my heat threshold without destroying flavors. I cannot wait to have the mushroom bi bim bop again.
We had no issues with service. It was reliable and gracious. The decor is a real hoot, however. You can tell that they took over an old coffee shop, and then sent someone out to a few local yard sales to pick up just the right items to achieve that Goodwill haphazard style. There is a table in the front with graduation pics from the 60's and 70's, a really handsome hippie, and other characters who just could not be family members. It's like carrying around the pics you get in the wallet instead of putting in your own. The walls have some actual Asian graphics, and above our table was a shot of The Dalai Lama with Richard Gere. (I am guessing it was NOT taken there at the restaurant). No-one could accuse these folks of not being original. I love it!
I do have to address this phenomenon of mixing religion and cuisine, which only seems prevalent with vegan/vegetarian places. Soul food vegetarian, Victory's Banner, and Amitabul all have this religious or spiritual component. At Amitabul, its Buddhism. There is even a buddhist item on the menu-a type of service, I think. Anyone know of a good Episcopalian dive?
Whether this place is Traditional Vegan or Korean I care not! What I /do/ care about is the Cure All soup. According to the menu it works for: Colds, Flus, Hangovers, and Sore Throats. And I have used it for each of those and believe me when I say while it is not a panacea, it sure helps ease the pains of each and every one of them.
The first time I sent my ex there when we lived nearby to pick me up the soup for take out I was wowed by how they packaged it. The noodles are packed in a separate container from the broth and veggies. Anyone who has experienced noodles that have overcooked in their own broth can appreciate this.
I have had other dishes there, take out and dine in, but nothing can compare to this soup. Even when not ill it is my first choice. It is even a nice warm up on a cold day to help keep those nasty things away. Well, except for the hangovers. Now if only they would deliver it!
1st off... call before you go... verify they are open... they seem to close at a whim. 2nd the decor is lacking but it's about the AMAZING food anyway. 3rd waitstaff can be a bit stand-offish until you've been there a few times... but again... it's about the AMAZING food. 4th if the menu says it is spicy... it is.... do not be fooled... prepare for sweating and nose running.
I despise mushrooms-as in dry heave. The 1st meal I had there had mushrooms in it (most dishes do)but I planned to flick them to my friends plate (who loves mushrooms.) I did try one since this restaurant was a new experience for me. I have no idea what type of mushrooms they use... but they tasted great-texture perfect... to my friends dismay since he was looking forward to extra shrooms. I actually called my little brother after wards to brag of my mushroom eating. The 1st thing he asked was "What?! No dry heaving?!" Nope ;-) We had soy pancakes as an appetizer which is a meal in itself... they have grated veggies in them! I have also had Dr. K's soup. So good! sorry I can not remember all the names of items I have had... but I have not been disappointed!
I can understand why people have mixed feelings about Amitabul. I love the food and don't mind the experience. Ultimately, the food is why you go and why people rave. I had trouble understanding the menu and was not entirely sure what I would be receiving (a feeling I don't like), but the deliciousness of the food made up for it.
Eat it for the taste, go for the wacky experience. This is not the Olive Garden, by any means!
If you are a "meat and potato" loving person, this is NOT your place.
This is a Korean owned Vegan restaurant...it is more Vegan cuisine than traditional Korean cuisine.
It's good, it used to be better. Which is sad.
The portions used to be much bigger and tastier.
It's very close to my house, which is worth a star.
When I'm in the mood for a good healthy, meat-less, spicy soup, I go here, but it is becoming less and less as there are much tastier Vegan places opening up.
I do like their soups and they have a Ginger-Citron tea, I really like.
I've enjoyed the healthy and delicious food at Amitabul and overlooked the too-many photos of Richard Gere and unsettling light brown, vinyl interior for years.
But last week we arrived for dinner 1/2 hour before the kitchen closed. After sitting and looking at the owner talk on the phone for 12 minutes, I grabbed menus myself. We ordered to find that they were out of about 25% of it's items. We were told that vegans like to eat between 5-7pm. We were late.) The food arrived quickly and we ate while the bus boy sat at the booth opposite us occasionally swooping in to clear each plate as we chewed the last bites from them. We were being hurried out the door.
In short, I didn't think they appreciated our business.
I still crave the pancakes. I've tried to duplicate at home (as you can see, its a bit of a drive for me now!) and have it close, but still not as good.
I love this place. I don't go nearly as often as I would like to because it's a little far. I think I'll go there for lunch today though.
I can understand some of the criticism of the decor or Chef Dave's service, but I think you need to recognize the context of the environment you're in and keep an open mind.

I always feel great when I eat here. As someone else mentioned, they really package their take-out food well. They're closed on Mondays.
After reading a bunch of reviews on this place, I'd like to do it some justice. First off, they're closed Sunday and Monday, open Tuesday through Saturday from Noon-10 pm, but they won't seat you after 9 pm. They also close for about an hour between the hours of 4-5, but this fluctuates, they could close from 3:30-4:15.... So if you show up around this time and they're closed, just stick around or go to Superdawg and get a grilled cheese (SOL if you're a strict vegan).
All veggies are organic, water is filtered, sauces are homemade, meals are made to order so don't be afraid to ask for no onions, etc., noodles are made from scratch, no added salt or sugar, desserts/cookies are homemade, in the summertime he occasonally makes vegan ice cream.
As far as the food is concerned, it's the cleanest and healthiest meal you can find in Chicago, or the world for that matter. You can pig out and still feel great afterwards. Try the Green Stew, Wolfman's Dream Treats, Black Pearl Pancakes.... Depending on the day of the week or if you show up just before closing-time, they might be out of some food items. This means everything is fresh.
I've eaten here well over 100 times and it never gets old, always fresh and always delicious. The owner, Dave, might be short with you (his brother Bill does all the cooking), but just be cordial and he'll be your friend after a few visits. Eating here is an experience, try and enjoy the ambient tunes and spiritual writings on the wall... It'll make your day.
I can totally understand the "love it" or "hate it" mentality that makes up a lot of the reviews here.....Luckily I went with a friend who was a "regular" -- she even had the owner make her meals for the week and she paid a flat fee (like Nutrisystem or something?) -- so she told me what she thought was very good and what she thought I should maybe steer clear from on my first visit there.
I took her advice and I absolutely loved my dish. She ordered a soup that I tasted and I didn't care for it too much, although it certainly wasn't inedible. Everything I have ordered there was amazing....I feel like if I had never tasted her soup dish, I would have given 5 stars.
I wish I lived closer, I'd eat there more often.
The owner is one of the most passive aggressive people I have ever come in contact with. He is soooo rude. He always tries to rush me when I order, he'll walk away in the middle of taking the order, he'll say he's running out of food, so we have to make a decision...like if I take 2 more minutes to decide, all of a sudden he'll be out of everything. He says the most rude things all with a smile on his face. He'll take the menus away while you are still looking at them. One time I got there at 8:00 pm and he greeted us with a smile on his face, "Take out only, no more dine-in" Even thought they were open for another hour. When we said we don't want to do take out, he almost seemed even happier that he didn't have to deal with another order for the evening.
I ordered the Green Nirvana for the 2nd time, and it wasn't nearly as green as the first time. This place really means spicy when the menu says spicy, so be careful.
Most of the time the food is pretty good, but I just can't get over the owner.
amitabul is one of my favorite places.
First of all, CALL BEFORE YOU COME. too many times have i driven there and found it to be closed.
also if you go once and you dont like it, dont give up. ive been going for about 8 years now and i love it more each time. the food is extremely healthy and delicous, and its vegan! the mandoo noodle soup is a great "cure all" soup and youll have enough for three days! the service is a little off from time to time, but dont give up!
Amitabul was my first vegan dining experience, and I loved it.
Two friends and I ordered three entrees and a spring roll appetizer, and it was all delicious.
My Dark Side of the Moon was yummy, even if the noodles were crazy slippery and next to impossible to grip with chopsticks.
The oddly written menus left me puzzled, and the mantras on the walls induced giggling, but that's really part of the charm.
The prices were great, and the service was prompt and friendly. I only wish it were closer to Logan Square.
If you have a cold or flu, they have the perfect soup to help clear you out. I like the wolfman dream as well.
Service can be spotty, but once you go more than a few times, the service gets better.
I went here for the first time last night and I was amazed.
First of I was amazed cause I used to drive right past this place at least once a week for six months and I never knew that it was there.
Second was that the location is not in an area where you expect to find a restaurant that serves delicious food, let alone delicious vegetarian food.
Third, every other person who came into this place was greeted by name...
Okay, so I was really indecisive about what I wanted to get, luckily they had a combo platter which included my choice of tea, soup and desert, plus a surprise entree. Perfect! I could make some small decisions and leave the main one up to the chef.
What I got was a kind of kimchee inspired meal...it had sooooo many vegetables and rice noodles. I thought the serving size was a bit big, but since it was so good and almost all vegetables I ate the whole thing. Mmmmmm....
My boyfriend got a sweet curry dish...I tried it and it was also tasty and sweet and had lots and lots of fruit in it...very good.
I saw other people order soup, and that makes me want to get soup the next time I come in there.
I want to go back already.
One of the few places that indulge my "when I say hot, try to make me throw up" query.
Great veg and tofu dishes, always had a blast coming here.
I've eaten here a handful of times and have had such wonderful experiences that I now stop off directly from O'Hare when I come back to Chicago to visit.
That is, until this last time, right before Christmas. I got the Tibetan Curry and when prompted how spicy I would like my food, "mild, medium, or spicy," I boldly said "very spicy." I saw the waiter/owner put a big X on his pad--this must have been a signal to the kitchen to try to kill me. Granted, the food tasted good, but I have never sweat so much while eating. I didn't even know it was possible to sweat through your eyes. The heat almost made it pleasurable to step out into the brisk night. Even after nearly dying, I'll probably still be back and I'll know to order within my limits.
Also, hey, it's cool this place is vegan and sometimes even as a non-vegan I want the simplicity and healthiness of vegan food, but
after starving myself on a plane all day, vegetables and noodles weren't cutting it, so I went out and bought myself a steak. This is hardly a criticism of Amitabul though!
Korean vegan! . The owners/chefs are really helpful. They will make anything to order. The vegetables are always perfectly cooked - still crisp and fresh tasting. My favorite appetizers are the steamed dumplings and the Energy Sticks. Try the Wolfman's Dream Treats, the pancakes, or the Buddha 3-Luck. The portions are LARGE.
Close early so call before you go. Hard to find parking.
Just south of Nagel and Devon on Milwaukee.
It's too bad this place is on the FAR northwest side, or I'd be here all the time. For those who rely on the CTA for transportation, you'll have to take the blue line to Jefferson Park, then the North Milwaukee bus (56A), unless it's Sunday..Then you'll have to wait for a Pace bus. =/
Everything I tried was great---- vegan dumplings, seitan stir fry, kimchi stew, mushroom stew and some tofu-based pancakes. It was so good, I had to order a few things to take home. Who knows when I'll be back up that direction anyway.
Love it. And I'm not vegan or vegetarian and find myself craving some of the mushroom dishes.
Of course, it's close to Superdawgs, so I have to divide my time between this fantastic place where my vegan friends like to go--and Superdawgs where I'd have to sneak off from the vegans to go to.
Each dish is loaded with fruit and veg, and they're perfectly prepared. The miso sauce is incred.
Can we go there please now?
Wow, Amitabul serves delicious food. Really delicious. My wife and I I had a big night the night before so we were looking for a low-key comfort foody kind of place. We came across some great reviews so we grabbed a bottle of wine and decided to check it out (it's BYOB, an added bonus).
What a winner! It's a little out of the way and the vibe is nothing special, but the food was mouthwatering. I've never tasted vegetarian food like that, let alone vegan! We had Kimchi Noodle Soup and Wolfman's Dream Treats - I love that the dishes have inspired names like "9 Ways to Nirvana Soup", "Yin and Yan", "Hello Dave and Dolly".
The other thing that caught my attention was the service - friendly and to the point, but not overbearing. When we first got there the restaurant's proprietor was chatting with "the regulars." I didn't think he noticed us, but all of a sudden he comes over with two menus, two wine glasses, and a corkscrew and shows us to our table. Definitely on top of it.
I'll no doubt be frequenting Amitabul often! I'm just bummed that I discovered it now, 3 months before I'm set to move east.
This place is fantastic! I am so hooked on the Amitabul Pancakes. Cannot get enough of them.
What's that you say? You have a hankering for Zen Buddhist Korean food? Well, look no further than Amitabul for a really healthy, spicy meal.
They use little to no oil and very fresh, organic ingredients in their cooking, so everything is extremely light and healthy-tasting. The dumplings are great and there are few things on the menu I didn't like. I can't remember the name, but I swore by this extremely spicy noodle soup they make any time I got sick.
Service was always friendly, and you got a lot of food for your buck. I eventually took a cooking class there, and made really interesting salad dressings using almost nothing but blended veggies and fruits.
Amitabul is one of the places I miss most in the Windy City. I'm getting a little misty just thinking about it. Snif.
This is a restaurant I continually see gaining nothing but praise from The Chicago Reader and yet I had never managed to get to...because it's as the same as going to the North Pole for someone who realizes on public transport and lives in Wicker Park.
A very unassuming place. The gentleman who waited on us was attentive, knowledgeable and kind. I was the pain-in-the-butt customer who couldn't make up her mind and asked him to do so for me. He asked 2 simple questions and then chose "Mandoo Noodle Soup" which was more than perfect.
I had read a review that mentioned some people found the dishes to be bland, but if you want hot sauce, ask and they'll give you something even better here.
I desperately tried to finish my soup, but my companion warned me that no one person is meant to consume 1 gallon of liquid in one sitting.
The home made juices are equally as good and can substitute as a dessert. I had the "Energy Shake" with tofu, mixed nuts, orange , apple and pear. This off white drink sounds scary I know, but I wanted to take one home with me to have for breakfast.
Don't be turned off by its location, even my meat eating friend was delightfully surprised.
Generous portions and prompt service. The vegetables were fresh and flavorful with tasty brown rice. I agree with previous reviewers that this is certainly a different dining experience. As long as that is what you are looking for, you should have an interesting evening.
