I was initially disappointed when we sat down because I realized they didn't have the buffet going on Saturday.  I was looking forward to a buffet of homestyle food, so it took me a minute to adjust my expectations.  Once I made peace with the fact that I'd have to order from the menu, things started turning around.  I found a sampler platter that comes with broasted chicken, ham, roast beef, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, and your choice of corn, noodles, or something else I can't think of, AND unlimited trips to the salad bar.  Things were starting to look up, and I happily placed my order.

It turns out the sampler platter is basically a one-plate buffet.  You get a LOT of food, even when you order the "small".  The "large" portion gets you an extra piece of chicken and presumably more of other stuff, but I certainly didn't need any more.  Even if the hot plate wasn't enough, you could find plenty to like on the salad bar.

Let's take this one-by-one:  The chicken was amazing.  It was moist on the inside and nice and crisp on the outside.  The ham was some of the best I have ever had anywhere.  I'm not a ham guy, but this was good enough to actually order it as my main dish.  The roast beef was very good, although it may have been a little over-cooked.  (It is certainly some of the better roast beef I've had in restaurants, which always tend to overcook roast beef while it sits around waiting for a customer to order it.)  The mashed potatoes and gravy were great.  The stuffing was good, although I have had better, but this is another item that restaurants usually screw up.  The noodles were fine, if a bit boring.  The salad bar was awesome.  It had plenty of great toppings to choose from, as well as pasta salad and macaroni salad (both of which were fantastic).  Just about everything I ate was a winner.

The sole major disappoint was the bread.  The waiter gave us the choice of a loaf of bread (wheat or white) or rolls for our table.  We opted for the white loaf.  Now, I've heard good things about the bakery, so I was excited for good bread.  After cutting into it, I knew exactly what happened.  It didn't smell fresh, but it was piping hot.  Furthermore, the top inch was all hard.  They had obviously microwaved the loaf (which is a huge no-no if you ask me), and worse yet, they committed the unforgivable sin of microwaving it so long that they made the bread all hard in places.  Not cool.  If crappy chain-restaurants (steakhouses, Italian, etc.) can bring out fresh bread and rolls right from the oven, a place called The Amish Door that is known for its bakery HAD BETTER get it right.  Seriously.  I'm a huge bread fan, so this was a big disappointment.  In the end, I was so stuffed from other items that I didn't really miss it though.

If I find myself back in the area in the future, I'll definitely work The Amish Door into my meal rotation.

Eh. It's not a bad Amish restaurant, but not nearly one of my favorites.

Oddly enough the entire time I lived in the area, I never visited the Amish Door. However, a friend was in town, and running out of new places to try for her visit (which always means Amish pie fest), we headed to the door.

As with the typical touristy spots around here, it was HUGE and over the top... which, contrary to popular belief, is *not* typical Amish fashion, but rather, what the tourist industry has turned it into. The line seemed rather long the evening before Easter, but that was only for large groups as we were sat instantly.

The menu was normal and all of it looked delicious. Some of the items had a USA Today icon beside them, which we had no clue what it meant until our server, Alisa, informed us it was menu items featured in the newspaper as being the best. I ended up getting a special for the night which was poppyseed chicken and trying the proclaimed noodles. My friend had the proclaimed broasted chicken. The poppyseed chicken was DELICIOUS. However, the noodles and salad bar that accompanied was just okay. I've had better at other Amish establishments.

When it came to pie, it ended up taking the whole meal to decide what to get. Part of that was due to asking questions about what Alisa thought was delicious, but part of it was due to it being the day before Easter and apparently they were out of everything. We ended up both splitting a piece each of custard and raisin pie. They were delightful, but I think only together. Not sure I could've had either separately.

The bill was reasonable and I have to mention to not let the average rating fool you about the service. Our server Alisa was FANTASTIC.She answered every single question we had honestly and was great to talk to. A man I'm assuming to be the manager or owner was also very friendly and talkative... he offered to fly out to Arizona when grapes were in season to deliver a grape pie. Yummmmmm!!!

I may be back to pick up a pie on another visit, but I'd rather stick to my small holes in the wall for my Amish cookin'!

We had lunch at the Amish Door. We both had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. THey were good. The chicken was juicy, the potatoes were well whipped. It was VERY filling. It was just kind of bland, nothing special. What was amazing was the bakery. The brownies were fantastic.

I visited the Amish Door for dinner and was not impressed.   The food was OK and the seating was cafeteria style.  Don't think I will go back.

Absolutely, positively mediocre in every way. And unbelievably crowded during tourist season.  This review is for the restaurant, not the bakery, which is pretty good.
