Exceptionally good, just about everything! I go here a couple times a month to eat, there's a great vibe and the new wall colors give the restaurant a nice feeling. The TV is a nice touch too, since everyone likes to take a peek at a game, or watch The Cooking Channel.

My favorite is the eggplant appetizer, banjan; I always start with that and it goes very well with the bread. The mantu is also a favorite, either as an appetizer or an entree, pretty much all the appetizers are a must-try. My favorite entree would have to be either the Chopan kabob (lamb chop; lamb is their special) or the beef stew lunch special; the meat is tender and cooked medium, and the beef stew has caramelized onions in it which makes it perfect! The seafood is really, really good too, the prawn kabob is very well-seasoned and the salmon is great on salad.

They also do hookah on their outside tables, which is nice to do if it's not too cold. It's a nice spot to look out on Lighthouse Avenue around sunset. It's also right next to lot of other nice spots on Lighthouse and Cannery Row, so you can conveniently head over once you're done.

For those who are open-minded and up always looking for somthing new, especially in cuisine from other cultures, you'd be lucky to walk into Amir's Kabob House and experience it. We're lucky to have at least one Afghan restaurant here in Monterey! :)

After all the glowing Yelp reviews (plus a recommendation from my cousin), I decided to plan a double date here.  I was surprised that the restaurant was empty on a Friday night.  Usually, places with killer Yelp reviews are packed.

The service was great.  When we walked in, we were greeted with a kind smile.  Our server periodically checked on us and made sure that we had everything that we needed. He was EXTREMELY patient with Loverboy and his BFF who kept changing their minds on their order. Some servers would have been annoyed at the rate the two boys were going. I would definitely give the service 5 stars.

We spent $100 on 1 beer, 2 sodas, 1 banjan (eggplant), 2 bulani, 1 lamb kabob plus extra kabob, 1 beef kabob and 1 chicken kabob plate. Now, this list may sound a lot of items, but do not be deceived. Their portion size is small when compared to other Afghan restaurants we have tried. The plates only come with one stick of kabob served on top of the rice (which is why we ordered an extra stick of the lamb kabob).

I wasn't a fan of the naan bread that they serve as an appetizer.  I found it quite dry so I decided to slather it with some chutney that is available on the table. Everything else was delicious but I do wish they used more tender, juicier and bigger chunks of meat.  All of them were perfectly marinated and the flavors went well with the rice. The rice was killer and the spices they used made my tastebuds happy. All the dishes had just the right amount of spice and it wasn't overpowering.  Our favorite was the lamb kabob because it was the juiciest.  The chicken was kind of dry but the flavor made up for it.

The bulani was a hit on our table.  We liked speading the yogurt sauce on it.  The banjan was ok.  It was slightly sweet and I liked adding that to my rice. Loverboy was not a fan because of the texture.  If you're like him and you're a picky eater, don't get it because the squishy texture of the eggplant will get to you.

All in all I think Amir's Kabob house is a decent restaurant if you're craving Afghan food and you're in the Monterey Bay area.  I just think they are a bit overpriced for the amount of meat you get with your meal.  I guess I'm just spoiled by the Afghan places I frequent in SF since they are much cheaper and you get more with what you paid for.

The food is awesome. I got the chicken kabob and it was delicious. The lamb is really good, too. We ordered the bulani appetizer and it was superb. Friendly service, too.

Saturday nights are belly dancing show nights. I personally am not into it, at least not here. It's a small restaurant and the dancers are a little bit too close for comfort. I feel awkward when they're right next to me dancing while I'm trying to eat.

I would give this place a 3 star for the service. But the food is pretty ok and nothing great to write about. I have had better quality chicken shish kabob elsewhere, but for the Monterey region, I would say this restaurant meets the bar. A good place to go for a quick bite.

    Afghani food is really good!

I had dumplings (called mantu) that were made with really fresh, thin, and soft dough and filled with ground beef and lentils. The spices and the sauce with the dumplings were very tasty. I kept eating and eating them. My boyfriend tried the lamb kabob with rice and smoky lentil soup.

Afghani food surprised me as this was the firs time I had it. Maybe it's Amir's prepartion, but the food although spicy, was not overly spicy like you would find at Indian food, the Persian Grill, or at Maha's Lebanese food, where I just went. The combinations of flavors were also surprising. We discussed how we could take others who might not normally want exotic food to this place and they probably would like it too.

This is an amazing Afghan restaurant, comparable to Afghan restaurants in Fremont like De Afghanen Kabob House. All their food is excellent, but their lamb kebabs are amazing. Try the hookah, for $15, if you have the time and inclination.

SERIOUSLY good.  I tried the chicken kabob which was served with a nice long grained well seasoned rice.  Yum.  The chicken has some SERIOUS flavor.  I loved it.  I also only eat white meat and so was super pleased that I had all white meat.  The meal came with a salad to start with some delicious salad dressing that I couldn't get enough of.

The Boss had the special of the day.  Since it wasn't me eating it, I didn't concentrate too much on what it was - it was a sausage of some sort - and it was served with a potato side dish.  He didn't want it any of the potatoes so naturally being a greedy glut, I took it.  I lied and said it wasn't good to deter any sharing.   It was soooooooo good!!!

Being Indian and being used to curries which naturally come with a lot of sauces, I am not sure if all Afghan food doesn't have a lot of sauce - but I can't wait to go back and find out.

We wanted a change of scene and flavor so my gentleman friend suggested Amir's Kabob House since he had heard good things about this restaurant located on the Lighthouse strip.  At first I wasn't sure but when I jumped on my Droid and noticed that one of my favorite local foodies had 5 star Yelped it then it was on like Donkey Kong and I was more than happy to give them a whirl.

I believe both of our Afghan food cherries were popped this evening simultaneously and we enjoyed our experience thoroughly.  I think it was a Tuesday evening and although there was no one else in the restaurant we were kindly welcomed even though we showed up right before close.  The ambiance was warm and the cold Affligem Blond, a strong Belgian Pale Ale on tap, was cold and uber refreshing.  It also complimented all the flavors of our food very well.

We started with the Kadu and the Banjan because we are trying to avoid wheat since I've been having allergic reactions lately.  The pan-fried butternut squash was warm and magically paired with cooked onions, garlic and placed atop sour cream.  Great texture.  The Banjan was also served on sour cream and it was a dish of pan-fried eggplant baked with tomatoes, onions and garlic.  Not sure why this popped into my head but this dish would be easy for the elderly to enjoy due to its smooth texture.

If you want a refreshing cold dish or salad I suggest the Shornakhod which was garbonzo beans and potatoes with a hint of spice served in a dressing made of vinegar, garlic and cilantro.

We chose lamb and chicken with our Combo Platter (beef was the third option) and the chicken kabob was Epic.  Perfectly cooked and
we could not get enough of what we thought was brown basmati rice but it turned out to be Pallaw - a long grain white rice seasoned with coriander, cardamom and cumin.  Pallaw reminded me of short strands of Vermicelli so I was stoked.  This was all served w/a sauteed spinach called Sabzi, killer.

It is hard to please both of our palates and we were impressed.  I cannot wait to go back without my gentleman friend so I can try items with wheat like the Mantu - pasta shells filled w/ground beef onions and herbs, topped w/sour cream and the Aush - a veggie noodle soup topped with sour cream and garlic... hold the mint.  This way I can enjoy the wheat filled dishes without him looking at me slightly disappointed and then suffer a little later (itchy eyes, light hives, eczema, nasal congestion to name a few) but I'm sure it would be well worth it.

Love this place.  Lamb I the best type of kabob.  The vegetarian plate is also quite yummy as it is all baked, nothing fried here.  Wash it all back with an Affligem beer and you will be full.  The green sauce is hotter than the red and they both will make you sweat beads.

Based on other reviews and the waiters recommendation I had the lamb kabob.  It was very tasty as was the soup and rice that accompanied it.  The lamb was very tender and had great flavor.  The service was great and I have nothing bad to say about this place at all.  I love afghan food and this was spot on.  I shall return.

I am not sure how this restaurant got 4 stars on yelp.

We ordered bulani, which had mushy potato filling which tasted not like patato

Chicken kabo was smelling wierd, the Rice was kind of stale, Lamb kabob was ok. The only things we liked was their bread and lentil soup.

What a disaster, if i were you , i would not go

Awesome little place, probably the best Afghan food on the peninsula (at least for the price). Wait staff is friendly and every time I have gone there has been no wait for a table. Had the Chicken Curry Special (curry, rice, salad, and a potato stew) and it was very tasty and very filling too for only $10! The kebabs are the main event here, consistently great. Get the endless Naan, but be careful with the red and green sauce, the heat sneaks up on you. I went during the belly dancing and found it a bit annoying, but hey, if you like a woman ringing tiny cymbals in your ear while you are trying to eat, go for it. The hookah isn't bad, very limited flavors however. Overall if you're looking for decent priced afghan food with good portions, check it out.

A good lunch - I enjoyed their tikka beef kebab special (basically $2 off their usual lunch portion, but with a small portion of potato stew added)  for $10.  Lunch started with a salad with a nice vinaigrette, along with two pieces of warm bread.  The entree was one beef kebab - very flavorful, but sadly very overcooked for my taste.  It was still tasty, but man, if it had been medium-rare, I'd be all over a 4 star here. ;)

    Friendly service, too!

EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING we ate was deeee-licious - from the appetizers right down to the dessert!  Ambiance was relaxing  (roomy, mellow lighting) and entertaining (there were a couple of belly-dancers!).  Staff was friendly and on-point as well!

Perfect place to go to satisfy my need for red meat and my Hubby's vegetarian diet.  =) Plenty of vegetarian dishes to choose from.  We went to Amir's this past Saturday and it surprisingly wasn't busy!

We started off with the Kadu (spiced pumpkin), and naan bread.  So yummy and mouth-watering!  I had Salmon and Chicken Kabobs w/ Spinach over Basmati Rice and Hubby had the Vegetarian platter.  Finished it off with Baklava and a flaky pastry cream roll!

If you're ever in the neighborhood, definitely stop by for lunch or dinner!

This place has yummy stuff. My husband and I are always looking for places in the local area that are affordable and serve quality meals. We always enjoy the chicken, it's consistently tender and the potato soup is great, especially mixed with the chicken and rice! I love the salads and the spicy sauce for the bread is tasty! Amazing prices to boot.

Super yummy. I went there after visiting Monterrey Aquarium. Its a walking distance away. Got there around 1:30 pm. Place was almost empty. But I decided to try it. Good that I did. Spices used in rice, were like I never had before, definitely a new experience. Chicken, was very soft and juicy also with spices new to me. Service was very fast (may be due to time I was there).

Was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and found this restaurant on Yelp. Decided to give it a try, especially since it's away from all the Cannery Row tourist business.

Entered the restaurant well after the main lunch hour on a weekday, so it was no surprise that there were few patrons. Ordered the Mantu, Tikka Lamb Kabob, and a few other dishes.

I was very disappointed with the lamb kabob. It wasn't seasoned nicely and was quite plant. Manu was delicious, and so was their eggplant starter. But wasn't quite pleased with their tikka lamb kabob -- maybe I'll come back for a combo Kabob instead next time.

I have had Amir's Kabob House bookmarked since 1/8/10 so tonight I decided it was finally time to go. We get there and find out that it was belly dancer night. A dinner and a show, sweet!

Being adventurous I decided to try a new drink doulgi which consisted of yogurt, mint and cucumber only tonight there was no cucumber. I'm not sure if the cucumber would have made the drink better but from what I tasted I did not like it. I believe its one of those acquired taste things.

For my entrée I ordered the Tikka Beef Kabob: marinated beef with pureed onions, garlic, and sun-dried baby grapes grilled on skewers and served with rice sautéed and spinach. The beef was extremely tender, had lots of flavor, and could taste hints of the grape leaves, garlic and onions. As for the rice, it added a great savory note to the meal and balanced well with the beef.

My friend decided to order the Mantu: pasta shells filled with ground beef, onions, and herbs, topped with sour cream and mixed vegetables. The shells were paper thin but had enough integrity to hold in the wonderful filling inside. Everything on the plate melded well together. I would certainly order this for myself the next time I come.

    Overall Thoughts

So far the Monterey Herald hasn't let me down. Amir's Kabob House is indeed the Best Middle Eastern Food in the area.

Rejecting the traditional brunch with a pastry array and omelette bar, my mom and I opted for Amir's Kabob House for our Mothers' Day dinner.  And, boy, are we grateful that we did!

We started off with naan and some spicy condiments.  I wouldn't call them chutneys, but they were just as delectable.  We sipped the green tea with cardamom while we waited for our dinner.  I ordered the Seafood Platter, a prawn kabob and a filet of grilled salmon on a bed of simple but tasty brown basmati rice topped with a crisp onion ring.  My husband and both of my parents opted for the Tikka Lamb Kabob - tender, flavorful chunks of leg of lamb served over rice and with a steaming bowl of dal (lentil soup).  My sons shared the Mantu appetizer which was certainly large enough to be an adult's entree as well.

All of that, two desserts, and a generous gratuity were less than $125.  It was fantastic.  We will definitely be returning to Amir's for another Afghani feast soon.

I have never been to Afghan food before and he, per usual, had to be cajoled into anything different from the ordinary but we were both glad when we were done.

I had the seafood platter with prawns and salmon. He got the combo platter with chicken and lamb. The prawns and lamb were both amazing, I will definitely go back there just for those. The salmon and chicken were good too but I loved the lamb and prawns.

Be careful with the two sauces on the table. I usually like hot food but after I tried them with the nan and I was cramming rice in my mouth trying to kill the burning.

Shornakhod (spelling?) - delicious.  The boyfriend-creature didn't love it as much.  I think the flavor was banging!  It was very strong and it does take getting used to but I loved it!  The dressing is a cilantro-something and it's just lovely.

Mantu appetizer - FABULOUS.  Must get!!!  I could've eaten the whole plate myself (and another plate).

Banjan appetizer - my FAVORITE of all the dishes we had (though the Mantu is 2nd).  So awesome!!  It's eggplant and other stuff.

Tikka lamb kabob - I pass....I could barely eat my portion of it.  And the rice was too dry for me.

    ---

I would come back.  I wish I could come back often!  :D

This is a great local spot.

Inside is dark yet inviting with soft middle eastern music playing in the background.

The kebabs are cooked to perfection. Our favorites are the chicken and salmon.

The rice and other sides of spinach are also quite nice.

The mantu, which is a meat filled pasta with a cream sauce, is a great item for either a appetizer or main entree.

This place offers a nice wine and draught beer selection.

Sometimes the service is a bit slow.

If you are in the mood for something different and fresh (and away from the tourists of cannery row) this is a great place.

Had lunch today at Amirs.  Pretty good.  I had their lunch special, which happened to be a salad, rice, chicken kabob and a small bowl of soup.  Though I was thinking about other Arabic foods, I was pleasantly surprised with my meal here.  The bread they served was also hot and fresh, which I think really set the bar high from the get go.

I definitely wont hesitate to eat here again.  Parking could be be an issue.  Make sure you park with-in the lines if you park on the side street.  Apparently montereys finest had nothing better to do than to drive around the block all day and check to see whose tires were outside of the line.  I feel sorry for the guy who had the truck in front of me, I am sure it wasnt a cheap ticket.

In a sentence: Quality, but very overpriced.

I had lunch there, a kabob combo with a side of naan. It came with a green salad, which was fresh and well-dressed, but was basically a handful of lettuce with a couple cherry tomatoes and some onion. The kabob platter was eight cubes of meat on some flavoured rice. The food was all fresh, very tasty and well prepared, but the total bill, $22 for one lunch, was steep. If this was right in the heart of the tourist district, there would at least be a reason, but this place is well off the main drag. I would not return unless there was a special that brought the price into a reasonable range.

There should be more restaurants that serve ethnic cuisine in this area!   Walk through the doors of Amir's and you will feel like you've been taken to a different place and time - tapestries adorn the walls and there are wonderful scents of cardamom, cinnamon, mint, cilantro and cumin that drift in from the back kitchen.

My last dinner here consisted of -
Bulani appetizer (potato and leek filling wrapped in a delicate pastry with yogurt dipping sauce), Beef & Lamb Kabob Combination Platter accompanied by brown rice and Sabzi (baked spinach) and a side dish of Banjan (pan-fried eggplant).

    Everything was well-prepared and flavorful.

I took off 1 star because the dining area didn't seem to have a good ventilation system and became quite warm while I was there... even the windows started steaming up!

After driving past this place a bazillion times, I decided to give it a go.  Too bad I didn't try it sooner!

I don't think I've ever had Afghan food so I can't really compare it to anything, but I was nicely surprised with what I decided to order.

First they brought out some nan - which was different than the Indian style nan I've had - this is more like flatbread, but still very good.

I started with the Banjan which is pan-fried eggplant.  It was super tasty, and I would have been happy to eat a huge plate of that.

Then I went with the prawn kabob - the prawns were huge, tender, and perfectly cooked.  They were served with some tasty rice and a small salad.

The place has great ambiance and my server was super friendly and attentive.  While I feel like the food cost more than it should have, the pricing is par for this area.  I'll be going back!

Best new restaurant in Monterey!  I've had dinner there 3 times and have been completely amazed by the food each time.

One appetizer, two entrees, dessert, and a bottle of wine... all for about $75.00.  Not bad at all!

I ate here with my wife and 3 year old son after an afternoon at the aquarium. It was outstanding.

I had the lamb kabob, my wife had the steak kabob, and my son had the mantu (Afghani ravioli). Everything was delicious. I would highly recommend Amir's for a casual family dinner.

Hands down this is def a two thumbs up!!! Get there on Saturday and you get to enjoy a belly dance show along with your meal!
We could not get enough of their sauce and bread, it was so delicious we had to take some home.
For dinner we ordered the Mantu pasta which is to die for! This is one of their most authentic and flavorful plates that they offer, and the Combination Kabobs is the only way to go. We had the lamb and chicken and we're not disappointed. Along with the beer specials we couldn't have been happier! We had to skip dessert because we were so full and even ended up having extra food to take home. You won't go starving their! Def will be repeat customers for them ;)

I've been to this resturant a few times.  The food is always good everytime.  I get the chicken kabob and it is never overcooked.  Really tender and moist.  I simply love this place.  Good for lunch or dinner.  Staff is also friendly and helpful.  And it is just a short walk from the Monterey Bay aquarium, even better!

I had lunch here last weekend.

I found the food to be very good.  I had the beef and lamb kabobs over rice.  Nicely seasoned, and very tasty.  My starter salad was pretty basic.

My wife had the chicken salad.  The chicken was great, but the salad itself was just OK.    The Naan bread was different than the Naan I'm used to with Indian food, but the first serving was gratis.

We went for lunch and were the only ones there for the whole time we were there.  The food also took a long time to get served.  Staff was very friendly.

This place is probably more fun for dinner.

    I would go back.

We stopped in here taking our son to the Aquarium for a day of fun. He feel alseep in the car on the way there so we decided to drive around a little in the surrounding areas to find a bite to eat. My wife wanted to try the kabobs here so we popped in. We mght have been the only people in there because it was a little before noon, but we were pleasantly surprised. The bread was really good, and my wife loved her kabob. I forget what vegetarian dish I got, but I think it was an ash-soup. I remember liking my meal very much. Service was very nice and friendly.

The funniest part is my wife liked it so much she told them we might be back after a day at the aquarium for dinner, and sure enough we did go there for dinner that day. So I guess going to a restaurant for back to back meals means its pretty good.
