Excellent Mexican food. Excellent shrimp chimichangas. Excellent service and ambiance. They treated us like friends from the very beginning and it seems the locals love this place. If you stop by Springfield, go there. You won't regret it.

Pretty decent, semi-authentic mexican food.
The margaritas were excellent,and the steak fajita nachos (I believe they have a different name, though I can't remember it) were pretty good as well - well seasoned with lots of queso blanco, though I wouldn't have complained if they'd made them a tiny bit spicier. The first time I went the guacamole was wonderful (though I admit it might have been a little salty for some), but it wasn't very exciting on my 2nd visit (a week later).
Overall, it was pretty good food at a great price, with great service. -

If you've been following me on Yelp, you know Kathy and I have been looking for a GOOD Mexican place in Portland. They are hard to find there.
So, this week I'm on a Huge Road Trip from Portland to Springfield, MO and Chicago. I've continued the hunt for a Mexican place one could call home.
Local Yelpers led me to 2 places in SGF that sounded great-- First was Tortilleria Perches which unfortunately was closed-- Their homemade tortillas and chips attracted me. The second was Amigos. I purposefully was looking for something a little more cozy, family owned and less franchisee.
At Amigos, service was very fast and friendly-- my food came out almost instantly.
Essentially Amigos is a Fast Mex place doubling as sit down Mexican.
ADVANTAGE- you get hot (and good) food FAST
DISADVANTAGE- Though they try, there really isn't a homey Mexican Ambiance going. Kinda feels like a nice sit down service cafeteria.
The menus scream franchise, but the food was much better than I expected.
I ordered "Enchiladas Ranchero" off the Specialties section- Three chicken enchiladas simmered in green tomatillo sauce, topped with lettuce, sour cream and pico de gallo. Rice comes on the side (without beans.)
I also ordered two carnitas tacos on the side- pork cubes simmered in a tasty sauce, and a side of refried beans. These were garnished with white queso fresca.
My meal was actually very tasty, possibly a little saltier than some may like. I'd recommend all three items. Be aware the soft tacos are served authentic 'street' style, so don't expect a taco stuffed with extras. They would be better I think if served in a double soft tortilla.
Amigos beans are GREAT, which is a good sign suggesting everything else is pretty good too. Tasty Beans also probably mean there's Lard in there- but if you want super tasty Comfort Mex you need to be prepared to say "Bring it ON" to the cholesterol.
Their chips were nothing special, nor their red salsa. It was quite mild, tasting of a canned tomato sauce base that actually reminded me a little of Ketchup.
All in all however, this is a good place to eat and I will return when I'm in SGF.
So Bottom Line-- If you want a quick Comfort Mex meal at a super cheap price that actually tastes good, Amigos should become a regular stop for you. -

I've been here a few times and always had good experiences. I even "drove through" one time and got a bag of tacos to go and that was fun- and kind of funny, as the guy walked out to my car to take my order. Maybe their speaker system was broken, I can't remember.
They're consistently good and you get a great quantity and value for your dollar. -

I'm a fan of the Americanized Mexican fare you'll find at most Mexican restaurants, as long as the ingredients are fresh and well prepared. So you won't read me tearing places down for not being authentic. I understand why so many people fall into that rhetoric, though, as so many of those establishments have cookie cutter menus that lack personality or unique character. So, when a friend recommended Amigos and handed me the menu, I was intrigued. There are so many dishes to choose from that are new to me. I had to try it.
On a snowy winter evening, Valentine's Day actually, my dear partner and I made our way into the bright warmth of Amigo's. A young man, smiling and shy, seated us and took our order, grinning as we attempted to pronounce unfamiliar menu items and helping us along good-naturedly. I immediately felt at ease. A soccer match was being televised in the main dining room. Couples on either side of our booth burped noisily. If I had to review the patrons in this place, my only compliment would be that everyone had clothes on.
The chips were okay, but the salsa was bland and had no heat at all. I ordered the Parillada Mexicana for one. It is fajitas with everything including chorizo and potatoes cooked together. It was amazing - I can't believe that I've never eaten potatoes in fajitas before. So good. And the guacamole was really decent.
My dear ordered the Jalisco Special. The chile relleno was amazing, mostly due to the cheese. Anything this white cheese touches is absolute gold. Cheese heaven! She didn't really care for the rest of the items, and I was so in love with my dish that I neglected to try them. They included tamale, a beef taco, and an enchilada.
In short, I loved Amigos and hope to try it again soon. The service was good, the staff was personable, and the food was exciting and delicious. -

This place is CHEAP AND DELICIOUS! Totally the BOMB! Ask for the "Mexican Guacamole"...chucky avocado, diced tomatoes, chopped jalapeno (but not too much) and onion. Fantastic. Order the chicken fajitas lunch for $4.99 (WHAT???) and eat it for lunch AND dinner.
Super nice owners and all the staff are family. -

Finally I have come here. After 3 years of driving past this place and saying, "That place looks like the local Mexican place those traveling Man-gods are always talking about...". I finally went inside. True story: One shitty night I was trying to get some drive through Mexican and tried this place. After an 11 point turn (because I came in through the "wrong" entrance), I waited for 2-3 minutes at the drive through menu, then felt awkward, then went home.
This place is kinda like Emilio Estevez's trailer in Loaded Weapon; it somehow is a lot bigger on the inside. Strangely so. This indeed is a local place ran, evidently, by some localish boys. They are extremely nice, patient, and love soccer-as the music was cut once the soccer game came on. There are lots of bottled beer options; including all the Mexican beers I know of at the moment, and my favorite Mexican offering-Dos Equis Amber on draft. Yes! The lady and I both went for one of their giant 32oz XX for $4.50. They do "the beer which I do not speak of" 32oz for $3.99 and 16oz for $2.50. Finally! Reasonably priced beer, ALL DAY. But wait! They also seem to like making, and saying, "margaritas", so maybe I should try one of those next time...
I never know what to get at Mexican places. I always feel overwhelmed by the endless array of choices for just, as Jim Gaffigan says, "Meat, cheese, and tortilla". So I asked our young gentleman waiter and he suggested the Fajitas as being his favorite thing to eat here. A typical choice I reasoned, but went for it. The lady went for his 2nd favorite thing to eat; The Amigo Burrito dinner option. Both did not disappoint. The fajitas were served unbelievably hot and crackling. The meat was pretty good, with the steak being just a little bit tough. I actually preferred the chicken. The veggies-peppers, onion, and tomato, had this nice cast iron flavor with a deliciously char-carmalized-juice in the bottom. The lady's burrito had lovely, lovely cheese on top and packed a flavorful punch-if you could cleanly extract a bite...which I could not. My only complaint is that the side plates with fixings are not enough for the LARGE amount of fajita goodness you get. And there wasn't any cheese. I didn't bother to ask for more, but I'm sure they would have brought me more. The guac however was very fresh tasting and at my favorite consistency; slightly chunky, paste like. Now that I think about it, that doesn't sound so good, but it was. But, upon reading Heather W.'s review, I am going back to try the potato fajitas thing. And yeah, the salsa is pretty bland-probably canned stuff, but they add fresh cilantro. If you like it hot, they have this jalapeno extract stuff on your table that will ignite your dead taste buds.
I agree with the other reviewers-lots of food that is totally worth the money. Plus, good beer prices, and really nice serving guys who gladly accommodate your order and call you "amigo"-It makes a man feel good honestly. Also, I saw actual Mexicans here! Who speak Spanish! I suppose that is a good enough stamp of "authenticity" for me to keep trying things on the menu. -

This place gets four stars because it is my favorite cheap lunch place. Mexican day laborers eat here (that is a good signal that food is good and cheap). Service is friendly, the guy that brings the chips and salsa is very shy. My husband and I try to make him laugh (we've been trying for about two years) he finally cracked and said his first word to us last month. Everyone else there is much more outgoing. The flavor may not be the best, but it DOES beat mexican villa hands down, and it's cheap.

My friends and I like to go here on Tuesday nights and get the fajita special. Fajitas for two for 8 or 9 bucks, and we always have enough left to take home. That's probably because we also ate four baskets of free chips and salsa and drank a pitcher of margaritas.
