This is a "St. Louis style Italian" restaurant, and I think there is definitely a difference between that and global Italian.  If you are looking for that style of food, than you will probably give it more than two stars.  Expect lots of provel on the menu, heavy sauces, or overly sweet tomato sauces.

Other than that, the place is very large, service is nice and friendly, and the pricing isn't outrageous.

I recently had the chance to try out Amici's after over a year of wanting to stop in for dinner. My wife and I with out-of-town guests in tow stopped in for a late dinner last Friday.

After hearing so many positive things about Amici's I was expecting something comparable to an eatery on The Hill. Generally the food we had at Amici's was very good but some other issues keep me from rating this restaurant higher.

So the bad... on the evening I visited, Amici's was still in full-on winter mode. The weather was pleasant outside but the temps inside were sweltering. Maybe management forgot to switch off the heat? That leads to my next gripe, our waiter - apparently the only one working that night - was pouring sweat like he'd just finished running the Boston Marathon. It's not his fault I would've been sweating too in the Amici heat-wave had I been working. Either way, it was more than a bit off-putting.

Since we had visitors from out-of-town I felt compelled to order some toasted ravioli for them to sample for the first time. While the t-ravs tasted good the presentation just sucked. The raviolis looked they'd they'd just been plopped on a plate with a tub or marinara in the middle on a plate that was entirely too large. The same carried over to the bread - it was delicious but served with cold butter (read: rock hard butter) and no effort was made on behalf of the waiter to serve us up the oil and spices mentioned in other reviews. Am I being a bit picky? Probably, yes. But again to be fair I was expecting service at least on par with a chain restaurant like Caraba's.

Our entrees also lacked any sort of attempt at presentation but at least everything was delicious. I had the Seafood Risotto which was outstanding and featured generous portions of shrimp and scallops. My wife's veal plate was equally delicious.

All in all Amici's is a good restaurant with some missteps that keep it from being one of my regular eateries. A-OK seems just about right.

My wife really likes this place, particularly their veal piccata and their bread (served with olive oil and parmesan cheese).  However, my opinion is quite a bit different from hers.

The first time I went, my plate smelled kind of odd, almost as if it had been cleaned with dirty washcloths.  I was pretty sure I could taste the off flavor in my risotto.

I would write this off as a one-time fluke, but another time, the same dirty smell and taste was in my beer.

The aforementioned bread IS addictive, but the other stuff I've had (when it didn't taste like old dishwater) was completely average.  Honestly, I'd rather go pretty much anywhere else for Italian.

I would give this place one star, but my wife has had better luck with regards to dirty dishes and liked her food quite a bit.  So, your results might vary.

After living in kirkwood for 6 months and never venturing further than the pizza joints downtown, my boyfriend and I decided to try Amici's for a date night. We were going to go on a Monday, but didn't arrive until 8:20, only to find the doors already locked. A sign on the corner informed us the restaurant closed at 8:30. Well then, I guess we should have done some research. Grumbling as we walked away, we resigned ourselves to fast food, and the hope of Amici's another night.

We decided that would be Tuesday. For our second attempt, we made plans to arrive earlier. At 7:30, I was worried we would catch some of the late dinner rush, but we were seated right away in a cozy side room with a view of kirkwood road covered in snow. I much preferred this to the large central room with the high ceilings and noisy tables. Already making up points from the night before, Amici's offered us another bonus. Tuesdays are 99 cent house wine night. Enough said. We ordered (Pollo con pesce with a house salad and white sauce pasta for him, Scampi Asparagi with a house salad and red sauce pasta for me. Plus wine, of course) and within a few minutes our salad and bread were in front of us.

Now, my boyfriend and I like to play something of a game when we go to a new restaurant. I'll tentatively call it "Who makes this bread?" He is much better at it than me, but lets face it, we're only looking for one answer. Fazio's. For anyone that has ever been to a restaurant only to find themselves raving about the bread and forgetting their entree, it's probably because the bread is from Fazio's Bakery. Seriously, it's the best in town. My boyfriend, being descended of the Fazios, can pretty much spot his family's bread without even tasting it. But since they always open the envelope at the awards shows even when the winner was a shoo-in, I figured I should check with the waitress and see if he was right. Ding-ding-ding, Fazio's it is! She seemed surprised we knew, but when I told her that was my boyfriends family's bakery, she seemed... not as surprised. As we were devouring our salads (the house dressing is a wonderful sweet oily italian, with generous portions of provel cheese and pimentos) the manager came over. "So, how's the bread basket?" he said with a chuckle. The waitress must have told him.

After chatting with our new friend Jimmy for a minute, we were served our entrees. That's another bonus here, the service is excellent. Our waitress was quick and helpful and kept the 99 cent wine flowing. His Pollo con Pesce was excellent and had a hearty helping of crab meat on top. My Scampi Asparagi was light and flavorful, served with sweet red peppers, mushrooms, and several large pieces of asparagus. Overall, we had an excellent experience at Amici's and look forward to going back again, probably on another Tuesday...

Amici's is a great place for county folk not looking to go all the way to the hill.

The owner used to work at Zia's so you're not going to be getting some crappy bland white sauce or Ragu.

I always seem to order something different when I eat there, so I can't say something is my favorite. Too large of a menu to pick one thing!

Great Toasted Ravs, one of the best House Salads I've ever had, and the Jay's hot sauce chicken pizza was excellent.

This is where I take my wife for special occasions.  The bread, the specials are always good.  We've always had good luck with the service.  I like this place when I don't want to be rushed, but don't want to be there all night either.  I guess all Italian places are more pricey than you think, and yet this one isn't too bad.  Give it a try.  Make sure to get the house salad.  It's wonderful.

I did the Italian circuit this weekend in St. Louis and I would recommend this restaurant.  The atmosphere was nice as was the service.  If you are with a large group (7-8) ask for the round tables which are nice.  The food was pretty good and a decent price.  Wine was good and affordable as well.  Complimentary valet.  I hear the tiramisu alone is worth the trip so I will have to try it next time as I was too stuffed.  While I would prefer several Italian eateries on the Hill, this place is great if you are in the Kirkwood neighborhood.
