Review from Julia H.
Milpitas, CA
My friend's rehearsal dinner was held here. The restaurant was a bit quiet when I entered but I don't let things like that bother me. As long as I'm with great friends, we can have a great time.
The food came out in platters and we didn't have to choose, which was nice since many of us were getting acquainted. Sangria, soda, and wines were flowing freely as we nibbled and ate our way through six or seven platters coming out.
The waiters were very attentive and were very accommodating towards my friend about different vegetarian options. I had a fantastic time and no one gave us any strange looks for being the loudest part of the restaurant. I think I heard a few comments about us being the more interesting side of the table but that's for another conversation.Listed in: Out-of-this-state Eats

Review from Debony M.

I went here because I heard it was the top Italian food place in Bayonne and boy was I disappointed! They say that a good Italian meal starts with the bread. Well It was terrible, uncut, and dry. In addition the butter was served in individual sealed teaspoon packets. You know the ones you get at KFC for your biscuits or in BBQ joints. Is butter in a ramekin too much to ask for guys? The Fettucini Alfredo was bland at best. No flavor. The Mussel and Clam Casino tasted as if it had been marinating in sugar overnight. I gave this venue two stars for Decor and a friendly bartender. However, I wouldn't recommend this place and will continue my search for the best Italian food in Bayonne.

Review from Terra W.
Rockville Centre, NY
My parents and I were passing through Bayonne for the night and had no idea where to go. Not being familiar with the area, and not having a car (we arrived via boat), we took what we could get: Amici.
I have to say, we had a better experience than the below reviewers, thankfully. The restaurant wasn't busy, but we were there pretty early on a Friday night. We were immediately served some warm and very tasty bread and they promptly poured me the biggest glass of pinot grigio I think I ever saw (maybe that's why my experience was so good?)
I had the mussels and clams marinara (no pasta), my parents had pasta dishes. They were good-- huge portions. We also split some salads which were big and fresh. It wasn't cheap, but since I live in New York it didn't seem terribly expensive, also considering my big glass of wine would be split into 2 or three drinks elsewhere.
Would I travel back to Bayonne to go to Amici? No. Would I stop by again if I was in the area? Only if I couldn't find anywhere else new to try. Am I regretful of our experience? Not at all! -

1st time here with a new found friend who lives just a few blocks away so we decided to try it. It was a Thursday night so expectedly quiet--in fact during a portion of our stay we were the only ones in the dining room area.
Entrance is on the side parking could be an issue during busy times(why we wanted to try it on a non-busy nite). You enter & on the right is a lounge area & the other side the dining area. I counted about 15 tables so i'd recommend reservations if they take them for fri/sat nite.
Room temp bread + butter standard. I had a choc martini pretty good definitely not skimpy on the vodka & filled to the rim.
Appetizers were stuffed portabella with greens & stuffed clams. Stuffing is smooth, fairly tasty, mushroom & clams were good though a balsamic marinade would have boosted the rating & been good to eat the greens & the clams had a wee bit of sand(or something I crunched so this brought the rating down).
Entrees were fetuccine alfredo/shrimp which my friend said was very good. I had veal saltimbocca which was listed over spinach but i requested it be substituted with mushrooms which was not a problem & I will say they didnt skimp on portions. I had 5 full pieces of veal pretty good & there had to be at least 20 mushrooms very well done(this would have been a better appetizer than the portabello)--accompaniments were garlic asparagus & roasted potatoes which was a nice touch.
They only had 3 desserts? I think the waiter forgot to mention sorbets, etc which I recall on their website. So out of cheesecake, tiramisu & choc mousse we chose the latter two both smooth & tasty. We both had cappuccino which was VERY hot it took at least 10 mins before attempting sipping other than on a spoon but better very hot the hot enough but it was strong & flavorful.
Service was fine of course we were 1 out of 4 tables so not a real challenge which is fine for me.
A side note I ordered chicken parm entree to go the cutlets covered a whole layer in the pan & loads of angel hair pasta though it looks like they skimped on the sauce have yet to eat it but if it's disappointing I may modify this review.
For 2 appys, 1 drink, 3 ttl entrees, 2 desserts & 2 cappuccinos with tax/tip was $139 which is very reasonable.
I prefer to give a detailed rating as opposed to just saying I liked it or I didn't.
For me I rate a restaurant in 4 categories in order of importance:
Food
Service
Value
Décor/ambience/misc
If you're wondering why this is the order for me I rather have great food & so-so service than the other way around. You can always plan around a slower evening to make it just as enjoyable but not around mediocre food whether it's fast or slow paced.
My 3rd item I call value instead of price because based on the taste & serving portion of the item compared to similar items at other restaurants tells me if it's a good value. For instance the best steak I've ever had to date runs about $44 but besides being delicious(a way to tell is it stands on its own w/o adding any sauces) it is boneless & about 24oz so you get two good meals.
Food(2.0), service(1.5), value(1.0) & décor/ambience/misc(0.5)
I then take the # stars for each category & multiply by the # in parentheses then divide by 5 to get my final rating. If the final average is exactly 1/2 I'll round up or down depending on other reviews.
So my calculations are as follows:
FOOD 4. x 2 = 8.0
SERVICE 4 x 1.5 = 6.0
VALUE 4 x 1 = 4
AMBIENCE/OTHER 4.0 x .5 = 2
Total pts 20 divided by 5 = 4
