I think the location, people and the atmosphere was good because this is located a little bit far from central downtown and there are cute houses. It's not fancy, but good for small quiet private dinner. The creaks are friendly so, people of every generation can have a fun like inside of home. The food is also like home made dishes. I got relax here.

The seats are rickety and really uncomfortable. I'm a small girl, but when I sat down I was afraid the chair was going to colapse. The bread that was brought to our table was delicious. It was crusty and soft on the inside. Sadly, this was the highlight of the meal. We started with the mushroom crostinis ($6). They basically consisted of a tiny slice of bread with some kind of mushroom puree on top and a dusting of powdery parmazean. They were not warm like the menu indicated. They were cold, tasteless, and pretty gross. (There is a picture of them uploaded.)
The salad that came with our entrees was fine. It was just iceberg with about two each of tomatoes and cucumbers. It was heavily dressed. Our entrees were lazagna with meat sauce ($16.50) and the chicken botticelli ($18.50) which the menu said was a chicken breast in a creamy sauce with prosciutto and provalone. If that was prociutto, I'm Princess Beatrice. It was lunch meat from the grocery store. This was a terrible dish. The cream sauce had no real flavor and was very runny. There was a side of fetticini noodles mixed with maranara. The maranara had a really weird flavor I couldn't place. It was too sweet and lacked seasoning.
The lazagna was really flat and was basically a layer of noodles, some ricotta, then another layer of noodlles with meat sauce poured on top. It wasn't really lazagna. The sauce had that same sweet flavor. It was the biggest disapointment after the crostinis. We decided to try the homemade chocolate coconut ice cream ($4)that was on the special board in front. It was delicious. The chocolate flavor was subtle and the coconut gave it some nice texture.
The service was good, although a little slow at times. Our bill came to $50 and the Groupon saved us $20. So after tip, it was $40, which I thought was overpriced for the quality of food. I'd never been to Amici's prior to this visit, but my wife had a $30 living social certificate so we decided to give it a try.
I always imagined the inside of Amici's to be just like the restaurant from the Godfather where Michael Corleone shoots Virgil Sollozzo and the crooked police captain. "A small family place, good food. Everyone minds his business. Perfect." Instead, we were greeted by strings of led lights, dusty wine glasses, a weird hodge podge of decorations, and below average food.
I'll ditto Ryan's compliments of the bread...it was warm, crusty on the outside, and soft in the inside. That was the highlight. The salads were drowned in oil and balsamic vinegar, and the main dishes lacked any balance of flavor. Prices were high considering the quality of food. $18 for a pasta with protein, and $16 to $17 for a dish like Linguini Puttanesca which is basically a sauce made with herbs and olives.
We were surprised with the $10 carafe of house red. We expected a quartino, but instead received a full carafe that was more than a bottle and a half's worth! I only wish we had clean glasses to enjoy the wine with.
The bright spot of this visit was the very polite woman who sat us when we arrived, and was also our server for the evening. She was great!
If it weren't for the cheap wine and the service, I would have given Amici's only 1 star because of the quality of food, relatively high price, and the overall dirty condition of their dining room and restrooms.Comment from henry b. of Amici's Downtown Italian Restaurant 2/16/2012

I'm not going to go into too much detail, but I do agree with the majority of the reviews that the food seems over priced for what you're getting. The meatballs in my dish were delicious but overall I wasn't wowed by the food. Its a nice atmosphere and I'd go again if invited by friends but not a place I'd go out of my way to try again.

Wow. What a big disappointment!
I'm always excited to try newly found places and give them a go. Groupon offered an opportunity to visit so we took the offer and headed out.
I was really surprised as we pulled up. Visually, it made me wonder if we were at the right place. Eclectic comes to mind, but I can't even say it really encompassed that in a good way. It had the impression of a flea market upon first glimpse from the outside. When you approach the front door, the first thing you see is a hand written sign about GROUPONS! And it made me feel like that must be the main focus of their endeavors, folks with Groupons.
We were there on a Sunday afternoon around 5. We were seated shortly after arriving. The waitress was friendly and accommodating, brought water and took drink orders and returned with them quickly. I had a glass of the Ruffino Chianti, $7. Moderately priced, and fair for what a glass of wine costs most places.
The bread they bring to the table - AMAZING. It really is great bread. Perfectly golden, and a crunchy outside, with a great soft textured bread inside. Very warm, borderline hot! Awesome. Surprised there was no olive oil for dipping, and instead--foil wrapped pats of butter.
I ordered the FETTUCCINE GORGONZOLA. It comes with a salad too. My salad was drowning in the Balsamic Vinegar dressing. Seriously, there was a pool of it on my plate that I also, dipped my bread in after I stopped eating the drenched iceberg lettuce. One small grape tomato on the whole salad. After a few bites I stopped eating this very forgettable salad.
The main dish ($16):
A perfect portion of al denta fettuccine pasta, in a very creamy gorgonzola sauce. Piping hot! The disappointment was that was all there was in it. I tasted no garlic whatsoever, there was no cracked black pepper in it either. It became really, a glorified plate of mac and cheese in a way. I realize some recipe's simply call for a basic cream sauce, sans the pepper, garlic and other possible tasteful additions, but this one was very bland regardless.
My friend ordered the Seafood Penne ($18). It was also a good portion size, not too much, not too little. The penne was cooked al dente as you would expect. The flavor of the dish was actually pretty good. It had four or five salad shrimp tossed in, as well as what I thought were half dozen bay scallops--however, they were actually bits of white fish, not bay scallops. The downside ... was that the sauce was a soup consistency! It was SO runny! My friend literally used a pasta spoon for some of the meal to get the sauce with the penne into his mouth. (I know, right?) It was the only way to do it. He also used the bread to sop up the flavorful, yet very runny "caper sauce".
The women's restroom, was creepy. It felt dirty, though the floor was seemingly clean and there was nothing really to indicate it was dirty, the bathroom "felt" dirty.
The rest of the staff (kitchen staff and possibly a dish person) roamed and out of the kitchen area - looking as if they hated life. No smiles, no friendly hello's as you pass them. The only friendly one in the place was our server, the only server on duty.
There were other patrons there. I counted 4 other tables seated indoors while we were there. One table seated outside. I noted pizza's leaving the kitchen more than plated dishes. (we were seated right next to the kitchen against the middle wall separating the staircase and the kitchen access. Not a complaint at all, just simply where our table was.
Our groupon was for $30 and our bill came to $45 + gratuity. So, walking out we spent roughly $25 in addition to our groupon. Was it worth it in our opinion? Absolutely not for the money - groupon or not.
For the quality of the food served, the ambiance and service ... it should have been a $20+ gratuity experience (including the wine). We would have left feeling we got what we paid for and chalked it up to an average and non-memorable experience.
Amici's is located in the Lockerbie area. That's about all it has to tout. It is a historic building that originally was a residence back in the 1860's and then became a deli and grocer.
When you pull up the menu for Amici's it immediately states "5 Star Italian Restaurant". I gravely disagree. Though the price points represent a 4 Star .... the food barely meets a 2 Star.
If you are going to Amici's hoping for a positively memorable food experience, you will be very disappointed. I came to the conclusion that Gordon Ramsey needs to film a show here to whip this place in shape. -

Yikes! What happened to this place? I've only been here once before and it was quite a while ago (2006?), but I remember it being in much better shape than this.
Upon arriving at the restaurant, this place looked like one big eye sore. There were two signs made of neon colored poster board with the words "beer + wine" and "open late" written with a Sharpie marker. There was also a dry erase board on the sidewalk with their website address on it. The whole display reeked of desperation and their decision to offer a Groupon made immediate sense. This is a struggling restaurant.
The dining experience was mixed with both the good and the bad. My companion was very disappointed with his dinner, but he wrote his own review, so I'm just going to focus on my own experience.
First off, the bread is sooo good. It's served warm, crispy on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside. I would be happy to meal on just the bread and a good glass of wine and call it a night. The salad was a disappointment with only some lettuce and cabbage drowning in oil and vinegar. In fact, the lettuce was in such a huge puddle of dressing, that I preferred to dip my bread into the oil & vinegar than eat the soggy lettuce pieces.
For my entree I got spaghetti and meatballs, which I love and was very pleased that it was offered as a special. I really enjoyed the dish and was stoked when the thoughtful server brought me a bowl of extra sauce. Worth $16? I'm not sure, it's spaghetti and meatballs.
One more thing that I feel is important to a dining experience...the place needs a good cleaning. The bathroom was gross and needs a good wipe down. Perhaps another sign of a struggling restaurant; it just looks like they've given up. Amici's delivers sort of what you should expect out of a hole-in-the-wall kind of Italian place. It's quaint and mostly good stuff. But living across downtown from this little house, there is plenty of other Italian deliciousness to divert me along the way.
You'll get soft, tasty, homemadeish bread, and a serviceable salad probably bathed in olive oil. I had the same waitress on both visits, and she's cool. Overall the service has been good. The food comes super fast, which is a plus.
I wasn't having a good night on my first visit, but the delicious meatballs made things a bit better. Can't say the same for the spaghetti, which is just average. Overall the main dish presentations suffer, but the food itself is pretty great. In particular my wife's Chicken Botticelli was good, though a little dry in the middle This being an Italian place, we did order the Riesling, which seemed to have come straight out of the fridge if not the freezer.

We ordered the lasagna and it was OK.
The problem was the bottle of wine we ordered... it came to the table already opened. After trying it, it was obvious that it had been open for quite some time. When we complained, the waitress offered $5 off. No apology from the manager. Nothing.

If you are looking for something off the beaten path this is it! If you like mushrooms definitely try the Crustini as your appetizer. Ask for a soda and you will receive a glass of ice with a can of soda of your choice. When I received that I knew I was in for a fun and different dining experience. They do serve wine and beer as well. The food was great all prepared by a one man kitchen that you can see from certain tables in the restaurant.

Not a great first experience.
I saw a 3/5 rating on yelp and was iffy about going but figured why not, it's local and right down the block.
The service was fine and the waitress was quite helpful and timely on drink refills. However the food was nothing spectacular. I will say that the bread was excellent, however. Both pastas we ordered were not very good at all. I tried to like it, really I did. But the marinara sauce just tasted off. I also think part of it was the price. The meals seemed very expensive for the quality received.
Perhaps I will give it another go and try the Pizza, which I have heard is decent. But honestly it's just so hard when Bazbeaux is so near. -

I love amicis. My family and I always go there for special occasions and are never unsatisfied. My father is from Italy, so have been there a few times to visit family. I have to say, amicis pizza is the best I've had outside of Italy. Also, the calzones are delicious, and are big enough to take home and finish later, which makes them well worth the price.
As for decorations, I think the place is adorable. it lacks the chain restaurant look and feels very homey.
If I were you, I would disregard the bad reviews you see on here. Try out amicis, it really is a wonderful place to eat. -

Tough choice between a 2 star or a 3 star:
We decided to try this place after seeing many times and receiving a Groupon offer...
At first kind of liked the home-like, off the beaten path, atmosphere but was also a little turned off by how icky this place seemed (due to check out the bathroom if you doubt my observations!)!
Decided to try the daily hot anti pata appetizer which was described to us as about a 4-5 inch across portobello mushroom with marinara and topped with cheese... what we got was about the size of a silver dollar! NOT WORTH THE COST!!
Salad came a little while later, wasn't too bad, a little small but can't complain about the size, enjoyed the dressing though mine had a bit too much. And hot bread was nice, too.
Meals were the lasagna-sausage and that was just what it was, Cheese lasagna with some sausage thrown on the side... I guess I should have asked, but I had assumed it was IN the lasagna!?! But for flavor, it was pretty good. I can't say it was the best I've ever had... but not bad.
Shrimp diavolo was also pretty good, like the flavor and the garlic!
Also had the options of some italian beers, liked having/trying them with our italian meal!!
Finally we finished with some tiaramisu (I am a total sucker for tiaramisu!) though was disappointed on the small sliver of a piece when these are generally served as about a 3inch square piece. It did taste pretty good, but due to small slice, NOT WORTH THE COST!!
Over all we weren't totally disappointed, OH YEAH, service was also really slow though they seemed to have enough help and a not quite full restaurant - we MAY go back and try it again, but it will probably be after we try many other places and ALSO will probably stick to trying the pizza which seems to be more raved than their other options! The service was fine, but it doesn't make up for the fact that the food was disgusting. Our group ordered the Shrimp Diavalo and Chicken Parmesan... it was bland and a big waste of almost 20 bucks each. The pasta that came with the chicken tasted like it was marinated with ketchup and the shrimp diavalo had absolutely no flavor or even a sauce on it. I still cannot understand why this place is highly regarded and still in business... and why were the soft drinks 2.75 per can with no refills? It makes absolutely no sense.

I love Amici's. Probably 15 or 20 years ago friends told us about it, and I love going back every time.
You can really tell this place is somebody's labor of love. The atmosphere is funky and wonderful. The building is perfect. Plates and bowls are a great un-matching hodge podge that feel like you might be in a family run restaurant in Italy. They have a vintage juke box with the best selection of tunes I've ever come across.
My favorites include: crostini appetizer, linguine puttanesca, fettuccini gorgonzola, shrimp diavolo. Their pizza is also very good. Everything is good, and be sure to ask your waiter for the daily specials. Take your time so you have room, and you will want to try their awesome homemade ice cream for desert.
Their bread is wonderful. They have great selection of wines. We usually ask the wait person for a recommendation in red and are always pleased.
It is about an hour drive from Brookston, but well worth the trip. You may want to call ahead for a reservation on weekend nights. -

Service was nice. And the place is very cute. However, the food is.... simply put - pretty bad. The sauce is watery and tastes like it's straight from a can.

You know, the service here was actually pretty stellar. The woman who waited on us was incredibly accommodating when she understood that me and my friend were sharing our entrees. She even went as far as putting everything on separate plates. What's usually a hassle for most servers (as I used to be one) was a walk in the park for our server and it was incredibly appreciated.
The bread they serve here is amazing. We ate the whole loaf, warm, soft and fluffy. And the butter, although prepackaged was super soft which is a tiny detail that makes all the difference.
We ordered the ricotta (I think) fettucine and it was the perfect consistency not to mention tasty, also got one of the chicken dishes that was pretty good as well. All in all it was a pretty solid meal. A little more on the expensive side for budget minded people, but completely accessible for anyone looking for a nice dinner.
You might call this a hole in the wall since it's really dark and somewhat tiny, and I'm pretty sure that during the day this place looks more like a taqueria instead of an Italian restaurant, but it really doesn't matter, it's cute either way with it's christmas lights and really old furniture.

First off, let me just say delish!!
We were randomly walking down New York St., looking for where my phone's GPS said another restaurant was supposed to be...and ended up coming upon Amici's first. We were so hungry we decided to go for it. I'm starting to really like these types of restaurants...ones that used to be a home. They have a very different & warming feel to them when you're walking in.
The menu wasn't huge, but there was enough that no mater how picky of an eater you are, you can probably find something. And if all else fails just do what we did...go with pizza! Luckily it was really good pizza. I've had some bad experiences with pizza places in Indy. Coming from the Chicago area, and working & going to school in Chicago, I have very high standards for my pizza. So far I've only found a small handful of places that can cut it around here. Now I'll have to add Amici's to the list. The crust tasted fresh & homemade; the toppings (cheese & pepperoni) were fresh & not over done (nothing overpowered anything else); and the sauce had a little something extra in it. It took us a while to figure it out, it almost tasted like there was something fruity added to it. We finally had to ask the waitress what it was. I won't spoil the surprise for you...I'll just recommend going to try it out for yourselves.
Overall it was a very good restaurant. I strongly suggest having wine, beer, or just water with you dinner. My only complaint comes from ordering a soda to drink, and being brought a can & a glass with ice....and paying 2.75 for it. I understand mark-up, but that was a little much...even for me. I don't drink, but apparently the Chianti was pretty good.

Granted it's been awhile since I ate there but I do recall my first experience at Amici's as a disappointment. I had dinner with a group of friends back in January.
PROS: We were on the second floor blue room with an ambiance/setting that was quaint with a rugged eclecticism enhanced by cubist portraits, kaleidoscope lights and ornate fixtures. The service was great as our waiter was polite, concerned, timely, and accommodating. Drinks were refreshed frequently as was the complimentary bread. Pricing was reasonable given the portions but pricing relative to quality was an issue.
CONS: Nearly two thirds of the dishes ordered by our group were unavailable for no apparent reason (at least none given to us). We were unable to order pizza or calzones. Ridiculous for an Itialian restaurant. I can't speak for the rest of the party's meal but my chicken fettuccini alfredo was incredibly bland and dull. The cream sauce was soupy and tasted as flat as milk while the chicken was barely cooked. Refills were also charged on soft drinks.

Horrible! It had been about 15 years since I had been there and I don't remember it so when the groupon came out I thought we'd try it for my birthday dinner and we're on a budget because I'm in chemo. Bread was good but we had to ask for more. Two children and 3 adults. They did not have meatballs and my kids were disappointed! They dont have merlot and husband was dissaspointed. Music was some Celtic stuff at first and them switched to INXS greatest hits for the remainder of the night. Not an Italian restuarant. Our meals took about 45 minutes to get to us, and there was hardly anyone else there. EVERYONES food tasted like NOTHING. I ordered lasagna and it came in a bowl that didn't resemble lasagna at all. There was absolutely no taste. Everyone's pasta tasted like it had soaking in water and the sauce tastes like Hunts from a can. Bathroom was disgusting. Top it off with a bill just shy of $100! Yes, I complained and when asked why we didn't order something else...we were starving, with kids and no time to wait another 45 minutes. We were offered a desert but after a total of two hours had no time left for eating. Why would we even try another tasteless meal when 5 meals were all horrible? Simply disgusting. Go to Iarias or Fazolis- sadly fast food will taste better and be better on your pocketbook!! Mainly the horrible food was the worst part since it is a restaurant.

One snowy Tuesday night my husband and I checked out Amici's, which had been recommended to us and which we had noticed before by its neon signage.
We were the only ones there. Candles were lit, and we were mostly charmed by its homey decor (although I have a feeling that if there were more light it would have felt slightly less charming and slightly more outdated/grungy). A plate of fresh bread, two salads, and a shared bowl of spaghetti later, we happily rolled home. -

You have to have the right mindset to enjoy Amicis. If you enjoy going to a hole in the wall unique environment, then you'll enjoy Amicis - it's definitely unique. Otherwise you'd probably prefer a fancier Italian restaurant. The building is older (looks historic, actually) and the interior design makes it look more like a Mexican restaurant. Also, there's a lot of handwritten signs that give it character. I used a Groupon and am glad that I did. The price is a bit high for the quality of the food. Nevertheless, the bread is really good and tastes homemade.

Just not the same. This place used to be so charming, but not any more. Prices are very high, food portions are small and not really that tasty. Ambience is none existent; with bright lights and a noisy refrigerator. Save yourself the time and money and go somewhere else

This is a great little restaurant. It is VERY small, but it makes up in taste. I had driven by the place for several years and always figured that it was fairly new. I was told, however, that it has been open for 25 years. When I tasted the food, I understood their success. I always get the spaghetti. The homemade bread is to die for.

Dined here for dinner on a Wednesday night. There were probably 4 other tables occupied - but the place felt pretty full because it is so small. It took a while for the bread to arrive, and it was absolutely just average. Nothing exciting. Not crusty or even tasty for that matter. It was served with standard butter in wrappers. Unfortunately the main meal didn't get any better. I ordered the fettucini with chicken. The menu said that this was their "famous" dish. The strange thing was that it had absolutely no flavor. Just tasted like nothing. I kept adding pepper. Almost wanted to ask for some red pepper flakes to add. But kept eating - and still never really tasted any flavors. Under other circumstances I'd be willing to try them out again, but if this is their famous dish and it tasted so bland, I'm not in any hurry to go back.

My sautéd vegetables over vermicelli was quite delicious and tasted vaguely like pie and thankfully lacked the overpowering garlic flavor most Italian places seem to bombard such dishes with. The atmosphere was quite warm and friendly.

The owner of the establishment responded to my first review about this saying 1) I did not order the right item, I should try another dish instead -- that is out of the question.. our group ordered multiple types of dishes and ALL of them were disappointing. I was embarrassed because I had chosen this place to dine at. I don't like seeing businesses fail, but when you waste money on disappointing, tasteless food, you tend to want others to know not to waste their time and money. That is why websites such as this exist. 2) He said that they price their canned soft drinks at 2.75 each because they don't recommend that customers drink more than one can of soft drink -- that was pretty hilarious because my complaint was about selling a can of coke for nearly 3 bucks, not about needing multiple cans of coke. While it is cute that they are worried about their customers' sugar intake, that was a pretty dumb response. Sorry Amici's, you're still not getting a 2nd try for me -- especially with that kind of irrationality.
