Review from Dawn P.
New York, NY
I used to come here when I was younger. I didn't remember much from those visits when I came back recently. This time was ok. There are two floors. The second floor is well lit and the lower floor is darker and has R&B and rap music videos playing. The second floor can be reserved for parties in which case people will have to wait for the lanes on the lower level.
The line for food was short but the service was sooooo slow. I mean I think it took me twenty minutes to get a chicken tenders combo. Other than waiting for the food and the lanes it was pretty fun. The bathrooms are kept pretty clean. -
Review from Peter K.
I remember when Mom bought me my first bowling ball. It was 7 lbs, black and had inscribed my name on it... Too bad I sucked and ended up in last place in my 4th grade bowling league with a record worse than the 2007 Miami Dolphins...
The only times I came to bowl at Van Wyck Lanes were on Saturday afternoons and with no money in my pocket. I paid with my time, picture taking and moral support (that's what I should start telling friends when I go to dinner with them). Alas, it's my colleague's son's birthday party. To digress, my bowling league fell through this year due to a lack of organization. I haven't bowled since September. F--k man, I need to get a hold of my (bowling) balls again. Where are they, Alfred?
In the bat cave, boy.
I dusted off my 2 ball roller from the garage and drove to Richmond Hill. The parking lot is a nightmare waiting to happen. Last time I arrived the lot was full and there was no way to get in or out. This time it was empty; since most of the curb isn't even cut, it is tough to determine the entrance/exit. Nobody wants to drive off a curb, hear KERPLUNK and say goodbye to their muffler.
VWL hosts 32 lanes, split 16 each on the upper and lower levels. We had occupied three on lower level. No one was around and I appreciated it! As a bowling snob, I dislike cosmic/disco/flashdance bowling. However, I realize that as a "sport" it needs music, beer and whatever it takes to attract more fans. There is a big screen in the middle playing music videos. Initially, it is odd to bowl with Pretty Ricky and other entertainers in front of you. After a while it grows on you and it becomes *gasp* "fun." As I entered the alley, I put on my shoes and went straight to work. The lanes were dry but I adjusted well, finishing with 228 and a 190. I went 2 for 2, converting single 10 pin spares (a weakness of mine and many right handers).
It's 2 PM. I wondered, when am I going to eat? There was a problem with the snack bar; the "cook" decided to stay at home. My colleague, the party host, was not amused and I saw her face turn red, while still trying to make sure everyone was having a good time. I was easily appeased with beer.
Finally we were moved into the bar and ate pizza, chicken fingers and wings. Pedestrian, but good enough. When the ice cream cake came out, we sang Happy Birthday in unison... poorly... the howling dog choir outside joined in the cacophony.
The Mega Touch game didn't work! Re-donk-ulous! Who loses in Photo Hunt on the first puzzle? I did, because the touch screen wasn't working! Boooo! The jukebox demanded $1 per song. Hissss!
Overall, Van Wyck Lanes provided me another opportunity for a good time (whether or not I bowled well). Thanks for not leaving me "Grandma's Teeth."
