Review from Kyle S.
Fullerton, CA
Went here in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday afternoon expecting this place to be back and I was presently surprised when half of the lanes were open. The games seemed pretty pricey but I haven't been to many other bowling alleys in the area, but this one while the prices were expensive they did have some good deals. The employee behind the desk was very helpful and explained everything to us and even help us pick the best deal for us. This deal entailed all you can eat pizza two hours of unlimited bowling and shoe rental all for around $17.
The pro shop inside the bowling alley while small is nice as well. The owner seems very passionate about bowling and said he was even watching me bowl and offered the right bowling ball and offered me many discounts as well. When I need bowling equipment I will definitely be back to see him.
Overall the place was clean, all the employees are helpful and nice, and the place isn't overly pack. For all of these reasons this will be my go to bowling spot. -

I like to pop in here for a beer or two when I get off work sometimes. Thing with me is I love a bowling alley bar for some strange reason. Never bowl just like to check out the randomness and macabre that is.
This place is a weird one as they do happy hour starting at 4:30 but the bartender arrives at 5:30. So you cant get a shot or a drink until then. But that is OK with me as I am a beer man and they will pour that. I just thought it to be strange.
This place is decent...you can get a pint of brew for 3-4 bucks during happy hours so that isn't too bad. Decent place to come and people watch and they usually have the lakers or ducks on so Im cool with that. Pretty standard bowling alley bar. I have never eater here but the food is pretty expensive from what I saw. So dont come hungry....just thirsty....CHEERS! -

I go bowling once every five years or so, and I'm proud to say that I am NOT an expert. But I did roll a 103...yippee! Just got back from a mid-day corporate team-building event there. With the exception of a retiree league at the other end, we had the place to ourselves. Of course, they have a full bar, but bowling without beer was a whole new experience for me. Nothing much to do besides...bowl.
The place appears to be one of the first wave of "modern" bowling alleys built in the late '50s, early '60s. Parking lot is beat up and the ouside is dingy. Inside, there are still a few charming reminders of its age, but it has of course been modernized where needed. The lanes were clean, bright and in decent shape with giant banners promoting their food and drink (actually more like red flags than banners!) above each one. The shoe guy was super nice and efficient. Had trouble finding a ball lighter than 12 lbs. with XL holes. Pizza was fresh, but awful and sort of expensive: $14 for a largish medium cheese. Your basic ketchup-type sauce. I'm sure that kids love it and don't even notice or care. Soda was in unidentified pitchers and refilled infrequently.
The people who organized it said that the prices were good, inside of our $15 per person budget for pizza, soda and bowling. Place is super-convenient. Right off the 91. -

Growing up in Fullerton, this has always been my bowling alley of choice. I actually had my 11th birthday here, and they did a great job hosting it.
Anyway, I don't go bowling often, maybe once or twice a year, but this alley is nice. The lanes are big and clean. If you go on the weekend they have music videos on big screens, and cosmic bowling. It came to about 55 bucks for three people to bowl for 2 hours, which I guess is not too bad.
We ordered their hot wings, which were good, but a little pricey.
All in all, it is a nice bowling alley and you will have a good time! :)
Oh, and the outside of the bowling alley isn't the prettiest...but who needs pretty when you want to bowl! -

I came here for my store Christmas party. We take over the whole place, it's closed to the public during our party. This was the first time I have been to this alley. I love bowling alleys and this one is pretty good. Small, only 40 lanes but the set up is nice with lots of house balls, easy to use computers and lots of extra seating. The bar has cheap beer. While we were they had the black lights on for cosmic bowling but also had the main lights on. Best of both worlds really, because we could see everything and also have the fun of the cosmic. I would totally consider coming back here.

The alley is large with plenty of lanes. It has all the usual amenities: decent balls, clean lanes, electronic scoring, lots of TVs, food, etc. The prices are reasonable, and they have lots of deals/coupons/events.
Chief complaints are: not enough selection of balls (namely not enough balls with large finger holes), the electronic scoring system doesn't allow you to add/remove/skip bowlers (you had to ask at the desk for these changes), and it could be cleaner (especially the bathrooms). -

"Jesus is Great....Go Bowling!!!
...back in the town I'm from the man that used to run the bowling alley was super religious and would hand out freebie cards around town that said the above on one side with a free bowl on the other. This place was my first bowling experience, it was smoky, people dealed drugs out of the restrooms and they had the old school overhead score keeping that displays your paper score cards overhead.
Enter Carter Lanes. Flat screens, clean facilities, helpful ladies at the snack bar and shoes that kinda look new. Add 20+ yelpers, J's cupcakes and it = good times!
I bowled a 130 bishes! Probably the highest I can remember bowling. Go Team 39! -
Review from Wes S.
This place is too pretty to be a bowling alley, seriously. It doesn't have the ruffians/hooligans/and hoodlums (my favorite type of people, lol) as other bowling alleys would. There are LCD screens, nice, shiny, clean bowling lanes, the seating area is super clean, and even they have "themes" for your scoreboard.
I guess the bar sucks, but hey, I'm here to bowl and have been lucky to not face the eternity of a wait to get some drinks.
$7.50 for two hours and $4.00 for shoes is a STEAL on Thursday. Yes, you can pay a little less for a older, more run down, "real" bowling alley, but for once, I'll do as my girlfriends do (when choosing items) and choose this one for being "cute".
Thank you The Judy for your monthly UYEs!! I would've never found this place without you. :) -

I like bowling, but bowling hates me.
The ball kept going in the gutter. I might as well have been throwing my mind down the lane if that was the case.

Review from Ana M.
What really sold me on this place was the bar, During happy hour a pitcher of Bud Light was about $8. After 2 pitchers I went to close my tab with the lovely bar tender named Bob. When he handed me my slip to sign he slapped it down on a book entitled' The Playboys guide to Bartending' and said " you're going to have to sign on the Bible" . Now if that isn't 5 star worthy i don't know what is. What bothered me about the pitchers is the fact there is a big metal thing in the middle to supposedly keep the beer cold. They don't compensate in size of the pitcher for the fact that there is a huge metal thing in the middle. Thank you very much but I drink my beer fast enough so I don't need a cooler in the middle and would much rather have the extra beer.
I went on a Thursday when they have $7.50 for 2 hours deal (after 3pm). $4 for shoes. On the screen they have automated pins. For example if you miss a pin they show you how you can better it the next time. For someone like me who tends to get gutter balls they suggest you hit it in the middle so you can knock them all down the next time. DUH! this gets annoying as you can imagine. Good thing I got drunk otherwise I would have gone crazy and riped the screen down for mocking me.
I thought I should mention the bathrooms are really nice & the play top 40, fuck yes.
I think I'm still drunk. Thanks Bob! -

This place is niceeee~~ It's so... what's the word?.... nice!
Big LCDs that you can customize in different colors to make it pretty
*making sparkly gestures in the sky with my hands*
The same sized balls but with different hole sizes for me to stick my fingers in and test them
*smiling and wiggling my fingers*
When I asked for a 6.5 shoe, they gave me a 6.5 shoe. Not 7, not 6... 6.5
*slowly nodding in approval and wave footies in the air*
And if I do the *lean over - stick out my ass - and wave my arms to one side* move, the pin falls over!!!
It's so nice (^_^)v -

The place is a dive? ehhh...I guess the reviewer never been to a truly "dive" of a bowling alley in either Lakewood or Downey. Now those were dives.
This place was a little bit weird for me because I could have sworn I have been here before. Probably 8 years ago or so, or at least before the turn of the century. I just had an errie feeling this is the place I have been here before.
I am a recreational bowler too, so buying a bowling shoes would make sense for me either. It's only $4 for a rental which I can live with and the price of the lanes was cheap too at a "sessional" rate of $7.50 for two hours.
That sessional rate is a bargain if you teamed up with bowlers who can rolls strike like my team did that night. It's not a bargain if you are stuck with people who throws gutter and with people requiring to roll twice for a spare. Needless to say I'll be happy with a team that included Jason H. and Jeremy Y. who can roll strikes ...and pretty much leave out Dave G. who throws gutter balls.
So sorry Ferocious!
I have to beg to differ with previous people who thought the bartender at the bar represents the hands of time with his slow pour and slow at the cash register. The dude was quick with the drink and gave me the change within 30 seconds. Yes, the man is old. Let's give him some break as I was thrilled the bowling alley employs the elderly at this establishment.
This bowling is relatively new compares to the other "dive" places and update with a lot of newer electronic scoring monitor and systems. You can also update the "skins" of the score card which is a pretty nice touch.
There also plenty of different weight and colors of the bowling balls for your point of the attack down a nice slick layered lanes. It's not too slippery as my bowling ball rarely touched the gutter. (the ladies can testify to that as some of them were getting 120-140 on their scores).
The nice little amenities was that they also have a diner where you can sit and eat the snack food or have them delivered to your lane. The pizza or the wings would sound great with the cold brew from the bar. Really, it's a cool homely place that you would have thought your local pool hall would be just like this place.
Bowling can so much fun regardless of what you scored. (unless you're competitive like the people who complained the lanes wasn't slick enough).Listed in: Behind the Great Wall of…, Barcrawling in Weaksauce…

Dave S., if I steal what you were gonna say...'tis not my fault. That's what you get for writing that "oh so helpful" review. ;-)
40 freakin' plasmas...one on each lane...with cartoon bowling graphics on each one. It's like Playstation/Wii but bigger. It gives you tips on how to pick up each spare. They also have neon machines that you enter your names on. Hopefully, they'll upgrade the chairs and return ball machine soon. We bowled 3 games and only had to reset the score once. That's a much better average than the AMF in Cerritos.
This place is huge. Their snack bar isn't just a snack bar...it's like a diner. They also have a huge game area with a fancy air hockey machine. The bar is a bar...but it has Happy Hour. And don't forget the gigantic parking lot. AMF Carter Lanes sounds all fancy smancy, but it's still a bowling alley. The bathrooms still smell bad and there's still ugly carpet and linoleum on the ground. I don't think they have many (or any if at all) league nights, so you should have no problem getting a lane here. I will probably be frequently this place on Thursday nights.Listed in: UYEs, Wanna Bowl?

I thought these lanes were going to be pretty ghetto. I have this idea in my head that anything named Carter "something" is not a nice place. Maybe it was because I grew up watching The White Shadow.
Anyhow, I was wrong. The building doesn't have the nicest facade. Looks old and worn down. Inside, was pretty up to date. I haven't been to many bowling alleys, maybe one or two a year, and this is the first one I've seen that has flat screen monitors for score keeping and some pretty Star Trekish keyboards.
The alleys were clean and nicely lit. The coffee shop food didn't look too bad and the bar was classic bowling alley dive. They have a couple of games in the arcade and some air hockey tables.
Ample parking.
Don't judge a book by it's cover (or title). -

I don't bowl much but this place is definitely nicer than any other bowling alley I've been to.
It's big, open, and nice. There are chairs for your non-bowling guests to sit on (usually me) which is nice. Sometimes I bowl but I've only hung out at this particular alley.
Lots of good bowlers from what I can see. Too good for me!!!!!

This bowling alley rocks! I have never bowled as consistently as I have here in a lonnnnnnnnng time. I do appreciate the waxing of the lanes explanation KFed. Because I seriously don't know how I did it. I like the betting of beers Dave G...... too bad it was a suckers bet. HA!
Also AJK's technique of jumping up and down trying to make her ball tip over some more pins..... Foodslut's cheering section in the back - bottoms up! Or Judy's dainty way of getting many strikes - you rock woman!
This place has everything that I want while bowling: Blue Moon, nice / newer shoes, up to date scoring screens and a chill atmosphere. I am IN for the next UYE Miss Judy H. -
Review from Min T.
Los Angeles, CA
I learned to bowl sometime in junior high school. It was the favorite activity among the 11YO to 13YO set. I didn't bowl as much in subsequent years but enough to analyze exactly what I do wrong. Perhaps if I did bowl more, I would have tried to correct those bowling errors.
Well, I eventually did force myself to stop doing the things that landed me three gutter balls in a row. And also, I was with my friends and their enthusiasm caught up with me. I actually wanted to bowl better!
And I did.
Amazingly enough, I hit a strike and a spare at some point while concentrating on how to bowl properly rather than randomly getting a strike for really doing nothing more than throwing a ball down a lane and hoping for the best. All the tips and tricks I've picked up through the years came flooding back to me. I was bending my knee, throwing out the other leg in somewhat respectable fashion but yes, looking at the center of the pins with fierceness. I'm going to knock you down, pins! You just watch!
So, the place has ample parking but I've heard to not park in unlit areas as there have been break-ins. The rental shoes aren't so terribly old and shabby but they definitely have the worn feel of countless feet. It's $12 for a rental and 2 hours worth of bowling.
We needed cups for drinks and a nice waitress brought me one partially filled with ice but we were able to secure more later when it obvious we needed more cups. Mainly, this is our answer to the supremely slow bar service. Still, I don't think anyone really lost a turn while waiting for a beer at the bar.
I thought the disco screen was the funniest "environment" and whenever you hit a strike or a spare, there would be dancing ladies. Go dancing bowlers!Listed in: Crossing the Orange Curtain

I think I'm just more of an old school Brunswick guy... I don't know. Something about AMF bowling alleys seems a bit artificial and slick to me.
Some pluses to this location:
Very modern flat screen scoring system that even gives video "instant replays" of your spares and strikes. (...though for some reason the cameras make you look like a middle-aged God-fearing Republican white guy from Akron, Ohio circa 1987.)
Thursday nights bowling is $5 cover, and gets you $1 games, beers, and hot dogs.
Really friendly staff
Lanes are greased regularly and thoroughly.
One con:
I've always found the stock of balls at AMF places to be overly standardized and difficult to size up... Carter is no exception. (maybe I should just get my own ball and quit complaining eh?) -
Review from Jason H.
I've been here many times for Judy's bowling UYE....at the time I was just a newbie and didn't have much experience with different bowling alleys. Not that I have a lot of experience now...but I know a little bit more.
It's your classic old school bowling alley, outside and inside. One thing that is really cool is their LCD displays. It's one of the newer models, with ball speed, and it even shows you how to throw or "roll" your spare shot.
The seating area could probably use a little bit of upgrading and the carpet too, but hey that probably gives it the old school feel to it.
One negative is the bartender is very slow and part of the reason in my opinion is that they have weird prices. i.e. a bottle of beer cost $5.32...WTH! just charge $5 so people can go in and out! They have this cool touch screen register....but people (that work there) have a hard time finding "coors light" on the screen! arghhh
One time in band camp...i digress... I mean one time when I was bowling with a good bowling friend of mine she mentioned that she didn't like to bowl in the dark cuz she couldn't see the arrows. At the time I didnt get it cuz all i used to do is just throw it down the middle. but now that ummm im a little better I can relate!!!! yipeeeee.
Well one cool thing I noticed the other night is that when the lights are turned low (cosmic bowl)...the lanes have glow in the dark arrow markers!!!! That totally helps! although you can't see the rotation of your ball...at least you can see the markers!!!
Not a bad joint.... :) -

Question: How do you know when you're at Judy's UYE bowling event?
Answer: Look for the sea of Asians with 2-3 whiteties scattered around. Also available are Judy's famous cupcakes (red velvet in the case yesterday). http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The price of special admission has been upped by $0.50 to a total of $12 w/shoes or $7.50 w/o.
The last frame is a bit weird. They clear the pins after the first throw and then let you have two tries afterward. Huh?
Highlights of the night was Dave G shouting "LOOK at it, look AT it, look at IT" to force other bowlers to look at their own pins to make them fall through staring. I was trying to use 'the force" to "wave" the pins down.
Disclaimer: The "LOOK AT IT" strategy for ladies' cleavage and crotch doesn't not seem to work. May lead to sexual harassment lawsuit instead.
Avoid the restrooms if at all possible. Or just avoid eating BBQ Chicken (you know my story).1 Previous Review: Show all »

Cheap Bowling, Expensive shoes...
That was the mantra that was on the thread - Boo Hiss to $4 shoe rental! Buy your own! It's cheaper in the long run!
Eh, whatever, I said. I'm a recreational bowler - Never played in a league, never owned my own ball, and my average is probably in the neighborhood of 110, which isn't too horrible, but no where NEAR a perfect game.
The alley is similar to every other bowling alley I've been to with the exception of Lucky Strike - Fairly standard, with a hint of vintage with the ball return... Big Lebowski would almost feel right at home here.
Black Light reactive bowling theme over the lane, beechwood grain texture to the lanes themselves, and 70s era plastic seating everywhere else. Retro!
Price wise (aside from the shoes) this place is cheap. $7.50 for 2 hours is almost worth the drive up from Aliso... Well, if gas were a little cheaper.
My only gripe with the place, the bar. To say that the bartender working the night the UYE went down was slow, would be like saying that Judy's red bean cupcakes were merely good - ONE HECKUVA UNDERSTATEMENT! I learned my lesson after my G&T, just stick with the beers that are easy to reach for him. Also, what's up with the strange beer prices? $4.63 for a newcastle? $.37 change? huh?
One other thing, not quite a gripe, but hey, it's me; Something was strange about the lanes - they didn't seem slick enough, they had a bit too much bite to them compared to other lanes I've been too. My first game was pretty lousy, but once I adjusted and got use to it, I was hitting my average pretty quickly after that. I wasn't the only one to notice it. Nothing too major, but just a heads up.
Anyway, it's a good place to go for bowling. No real major complaints, fairly clean, and the desk staff was fairly nice and pretty quick about requests. -

Nice lanes. Ball returns are old school but that's no big deal because the consoles are updated as are the monitors. The best part about this place is Ramon Torres, the pro shop operator. I've been to a few pro shops and have always left them feeling ripped off. Not here! Ramon did a great job on three of my bowling balls and I haven't had a problem since. All around a good place!

The prices at this place are awesome!! Although $4 for shoes is gettin' up there, you can't beat their 2-hour rate of $7.50 on Thursdays. It's pretty awesome. The place has a restaurant and bar. The beer isn't real $$$ and the people who work here are quite friendly. Even better, the lanes are well kept and aren't too slippery or dry. The lanes don't smell funky like some we've bowled at either. It's nice to have the option to receive pizza service while you're there enjoyin' tossin' some balls down the strips. I just read Sarah M.'s review as she says that the bathrooms were dirty. I have to differ with her opinion. The last time that I was there *(last week)* it was nicely maintained and not dirty at all. There is ample, free parking and is very easy to get to off of the freeway. Walter and I have NO complaints. And YES, we drive all over to find some cheap lanes!!

I took one star away. The reason for this, I was disappointed to find out that they do not have ANY surveilance on their large parking lot. And, maybe crimes don't take place often here...but I still think it's a good idea to have. -
Review from Albert E.
The good first.....GREAT PRICE! GREAT FACILITY! There is lots of room to bowl and get together with friends. Another note is that the lanes are in tip top shape and the decent bowler with be happy with the quality of the lanes.
The bad.....parking can be scary due to the lack of adequate lighting to protect your car. This was my second visit and the bartender is very very very very very SLOW.....you get the picture.....it is laughable!!
Despite the bad......I always seem to have a good time when I go to Carter Lanes. -

Short Version: It's big. And old. But still good.
Long Version: This bowling alley does fine for hosting your bowling needs. On the plus side, there's tons of parking. Everyone could bring two cars and still there would be room. The alley is older, but don't hold that against them; it's still in good shape. If anything, it adds character. -

This place is a d-i-v-e.
The snack bar -- the food sucks, and is higher priced than buying it at a sporting event.
I was in some league, and they could never get the lanes oiled right.
The prices are high.
At least the bar serves some stiff drinks.

Okay, I might be qualify myself as a major nerd now but I love bowling! Just don't tell anyone I have my ball and shoes in my trunk at all times!
So AMF, is pretty close to where I live.. It's definately not a newer alley although I prefer the older ones... The staff could be friendlier but bowling is bowling.... I love it anywhere I go. The games are very reasonable since they havent fully renovated like all the others in the area. And best of all, you can rent a lane for up to six people on Saturday nights for only $17 for 2-3 hours.... You can't beat that. Thats why I gave it a fourth star by the way....
Be weary of the old man bartender... He's talkative but the conversation can go to places you've never been... LOL

i'll start off with some bowling tips.
1. Get the right equipment. (multiple balls if needed, shoes, robot hand, etc)
2. Keep your sliding foot shoe dry. If it gets wet the shoe tends to stick to the ground and wont allow you to slide properly. The result could be falling down or tripping forward(must have powerful calves and amazing balance and skill to not fall and just trip forward).
3. Don't get nervous cuz the person that you were hoping to see finally shows up. This can really really mess up your game. Dangit...i'm normally really pretty decent at bowling!! argh. : /
as far as the facility, its really not too bad. Its not one of those lucky strike places but more traditional. The prices arent bad and the lanes are in pretty good shape.
I'd recommend parking your car in a well lit and easily viewable location as there have been car break-ins here.

i think this is the nicest bowling alley i've seen. plenty of parking. gazillion plasmas. the bar area is pretty nice. the shoes look and feel brand new. plenty of lanes! women's restroom is clean. and there's a loner unisex bathroom right next to women's... if you gotta take care of bizness, do it there with no distractions. everything's automatic... auto flush, auto sink, auto paper towels. i'm easily amused...
bowling balls are in good shape. i bowled with a good ole 9 pounder and the holes didn't start crushing my fingers or anything. some balls do that after your hand starts to swell up from all the bowling. not too crowded on a thursday night. i was expecting leagues all around. i wanna bowl here again. -
Review from Tim C.
The guys behind the desk are helpful and courteous. They know what they are doing and gets you through the line quick with our big group paying separately. I guess it's finally time I wrote the review since this was the 6th UYE Bowling event Judy has held.
Someone tell me if the coffee shop or the bar are separate here on Yelp but I've experienced both before. but here it goes. The bar can serve up great drinks but holy moly, can Tim Conway be quicker with the pitchers? I think that's why you can now order beers at the counter for the bowling part. Then there is the coffee shop where I ordered supreme nachos and a medium lemonade. That came out to about $9.50 or something. So the nachos seem to have two different kinds of cheese on it. The regular nacho cheese that you would see that's like a soup or that dispenser from 7-Eleven. There is also the shredded cheese which they didn't melt. Olives and salsa with the chili on the side. I don't know if that was chili though. It was ok. I should have ordered one of the sodas instead of the lemonade but their mediums are like the IN-N-OUT large or from McDonald's large. Which is cool I guess for the amount of money you would pay for this here.
I guess I'll stick to the bowling. Tonight was especially oily lanes where my ball had a hard time hooking if you had ever seen me bowl. Other times seems to be ok. Finally got the hang of where I need to be and we are done bowling. Tired as heck, it's time to clean up, put away the gear and go eat. Tacos baby, see ya next time. -

This is the worst designed bowling alley that I have ever been to. The ball return is a large triangle shape that hangs out over the dots on the approach so that I could not put my feet in the appropriate place to hit the head pin. I am a 154 average, and I only broke 100 on one game. It was like trying to walk around a big obstacle to get to the line. Whoever designed these lanes should be shot.
Service was non-existent. They have a bar, and it was open, but I couldn't get service. It was almost 100 degrees out, and I really, really wanted a beer and my wife was dying for a frozen drink. I went to the bar before we started bowling and couldn't find a server. I went back to the bar about every other frame and never did see a server.
On the positive side, the monitors were nice. They read out the speed, which I like, and show you how to line up your potential spare. Of course, with the ball return taking up half of the approach, there really is no way to line up anything.
I will never go there again. -
Review from Lily A.
I am up-ing it 1 star ... for such a great time last night. It was $17.50 a person but that was bowling for 2 hours plus shoe rental. Splitting a pitcher of beer and spending some quality competitive time with the man was a perfect Saturday night for me.

Review from DJ R.
Fullerton, CA
My bowling league bowls here. The building looks old but there is plenty of parking. Inside, it's preety up to date. They have flat screens that keep score plus your ball speed and suggestions on how to pick up your spare. The staff are friendly and the food they serve is not bad. You also get great discounts on your practice games if you're in a league in any AMF facility.
