Forget all the whiners and wussy diners...Ernesto and company are craftsman of culinary delight.

Again, FORGET the few reviews with a serious chip on their shoulder...sit at the sushi bar and ENJOY!

It's $23 bucks for all you can eat SUSHII (not Sashimi) and if you don't walk in with a stick up your bum you'll have a great dining experience.

The GREEN MONSTER just ROCKS....and so does the Stephanie!

This place is over rated. I've been here numerous times and two things I can say for sure:
    - Their service issss slloowwwwww. Dead or busy, their service is a let down.
    - Their waitresses can have additudes. I've witnessed this on two different occasions.
I just think for a $17/ person sushi place, they should have it together a little better. Oh and their sushi is okay at best. They put cream cheese in everything and I didn't like how rolls had cream cheese them, but did not say it in their description. Their seared tuna is good but other than that...
    NOT A FAN!

I must begin by apologizing for not knowing actual names of any of the rolls--I was just so amazed by all the deliciousness that I continuously shoveled it into my mouth without stopping to even recognize what I was eating.

My bosses assistant took me out for a holiday lunch here last week. She frequents the place and knows Ernesto and Armando really well. They whipped us up all sorts of crazy plates with various rolls as well as little appetizers, and a special plate with some fish that they only serve one of each day I guess? Anyway, it was all absolutely delicious.

They went a little crazy with sauces on a lot of things, so I can see how some people might not like them for that. Honestly, it tasted great though still! The staff was all super friendly, as well.

My only real complaint is that it is a little pricey. However, good sushi tends to be on the expensive side so the price is pretty much expected. Their all you can eat lunch isn't bad though, so I'd recommend that!

This place is amazing. Walking in, I was kind of concerned at the absence of an Asian sushi chef, being startled to see a Caucasian and 2 Mexicans behind the bar, but I'm glad I gave it a chance because it was awesome! The prices were decent: $7-$11/roll. I felt like I was a judge at Iron Chef eating here because it was quite a treat. The presentation was over the top and the flavors didn't fail to deliver. The service was excellent-the chef even made my family special rolls; they made us feel at home!
This place is casual, but if I were to eat here again, I'd dress up a little bit more (we were in snowboard gear, having driven down from Heavenly). They play techno music and its semi classy. You have to give it a try if you're around. You won't be disappointed!

I liked it, but then again, I like Americanized sushi. You know, fried and wacky.

The first time I went was for dinner. We came as a party of 7 and the service was excellent! The guy was attentive and loaded us up on all the yummiest stuff. It was a going a way party so he have the girl who was going away a free glass of wine and dessert. I thought for sure I ound the best sushi place in around!

    Until...

I came with one friend for lunch two days later and the waitress was clueless. She didn't seem to know anything about sushi, but she sure knew how to apply eye make-up... lots and lots of eye make up. Oh, and she was snotty and rude, so the first guy who waited on us got tipped $50 bucks, I tipped this chick a buck and a frowny face for a signature.

I'd go back only because I sometimes need a sushi like experience.

    Oh well.

The restaurant has consistently bad service.  The food itself is fairly expensive, which I don't have a problem paying as long as the food, service and ambience are good as well.  The food 'appears' to have have slipped in quality recently.  The original sushi chefs are gone with a younger chef staff now there    The wait staff has always been sub-par.  If you eat in, they are slow to attend your needs.  I understand that you have to wait if you expect fresh quality sushi and rolls.  But 30-45 minutes is what I usually experience.  Tables that are sat after me sometimes will get their food first.  If we get food to go, they forget to check your order.  The last three times we have ordered the Hawaiian Chicken and they have forgotten the steamed rice.
    .
I hope the absent management recognizes this, steps in and acts.  It is exciting that Placerville has a growing number of quality eating establishments and American Ichi has been for one for a couple of years.  I hope they are here for years to come, but they need to tighten things up so guests continue to patronize their business.

A place I like to frequent a lot. They definitely are not traditional with their rolls but they add a great twist to them. The service is great and the waiters are very knowledgeable in what they serve. I would highly suggest sitting at the bar and ask the chef to make you something interesting. I also love their Tom Roll and Godzilla. I travel all over the US and this place (in the middle of nowhere) adds a great twist to sushi that I suggest anyone and everyone to try.

First off, I always find it reassuring when my sushi is made by Japanese people.  I have never had bad sush prepared by a Japanese person and I never have to worry about the quality of the fish or the cleanliness of an establishment run by the uber-clean extremely professional Japanese.

Unfortunately, today my sushi was made by Armando.  While Armando was very nice, sushi making is not his forte.  The roll was too loose and fell apart quickly.  The quality of the fish was sub-par, especially their salmon.  They don't try to hide the fact that everything's been previously frozen (there were plastic tubs of tobiko in the sushi bar area prominently labeled "PREVIOUSLY FROZEN") and there wasn't enough vinegar in the rice, another reason why the roll fell apart.  Yes, if you didn't already know - they put vinegar in all sushi rice to make it stick together and prevent your roll from falling apart.

There was no real crab, just artificial, and no warning on the menu that the real stuff wasn't an option.  Some restaurants are honest enough to call it "krab" - but not this one.  Their selection was poor and most of the rolls were the deep fried cream cheese jalapeno kind that is only a distant cousin to sushi.

The Sunomono was the icing on the cake, however, and was the deciding factor that led me to write a review.  It was raw cucumbers of dubious quality, piled high in a bowl, with ponzu sauce and sesame seeds on top.  There was NO rice wine vinegar.  The cucumbers had not been marinated, soaked, or even introduced to rice wine vinegar.  After tasting the dish and asking the waitress to take it back I was told by the owner (Armando) that they "don't make it like that."  I have had Sunomono in at least 15 sushi restaurants.  I've had it served about a dozen ways.  I have NEVER been served raw cucumbers with NO vinegar and been told that it was Sunomono.  Even if I liked the dish as it was, all I would have been eating within about five bites was plain raw de-seeded cucumbers because there wasn't enough ponzu sauce or sesame seeds to provide flavor.

If you want real sushi in the Placerville area, either drive down to Sky Sushi in El Dorado Hills or drive up the road a bit to Shilla's. Don't waste your time on this place.  If., however, you like your sushi stuffed with cream cheese, deep fried, covered with jalapenos, ready to fall apart, and made by Armando, you'll love this place.

Oh - and one more thing - this place is not cheap.  You'll get more stuff and for a better price if you keep driving up Highway 50 and go to Shilla's.  For lunch, my fiancee and I spent $32 on two rolls, an ice tea, a beer, and an order of clearly microwaved edamame that arrived after the rolls.

    Update: Summer 2010:
I've changed my rating downward to 3 stars (and considered making it 2 stars).  I've been here several more times, and here are my complaints:

    1) There is one waiter (possibly the head waiter?) who is obnoxious.  Yuck.  Bad enough that it interferes with the enjoyment of the meal.  He serves the food quickly and accurately, but he's truly UNPLEASANT.

    2) There is often way too much sauce on the rolls, overpowering the taste.

    3) The rolls are all huge, and if you want to do an all-you-can-eat deal, you can really only have 2 or maybe 3 rolls (and I have a BIG appetite).  So if you want to try different things, it's almost impossible.  They only allow you to order 2 things at a time, and don't allow leftovers, which makes sense for them, otherwise an all-you-can-eat deal would put them out of business.  But then they should allow you to order half rolls, or make them smaller, or something.  I find this to be a real bummer.   I usually forego the all-you-can-eat thing and just order a la carte.  Maybe if you were there with 3 or 4 other people, this wouldn't be an issue, but I'm usually here with only 1 other person.

    4) Ordering to go is a big hassle in a lot of ways.  I once ordered an entree, which is supposed to come with rice and miso soup.  I picked it up, got home, and found no miso soup.  I called, and they said that they don't have to-go containers for the soup, so it doesn't come with it.  Huh?  Then they should have told me that on the phone.  Or charged less.  Or something.  Or apologized, at least.  They often forget things on to go orders (I started opening things up and checking).  Not cool.

So anyway, I'm still thrilled there's a decent sushi place in town, but I'm feeling a little turned off of this place lately.
    *********************

Update: 9/16/09:  I've changed my rating from 3 to 4 stars.  I feel that they have improved in terms of server experience/smoothness, and in terms of consistency with the food.  I notice that they have been quite busy each and every time I've come here or passed by, so I think they've had a chance to work out any of the kinks that come with opening a new business.  I'm glad they are in the neighborhood.  Now I just need to find a sushi buddy to go there with, since I'm not that fond of eating out alone, and they are more expensive for takeout than for eating in.

    Original review, July 2009:

I've been waiting for a sushi place to come to Placerville.  I love sushi, and I miss having it often, as I used to do when I lived in SF.  So I was really excited to see this place open up, especially since it's only about 5 minutes from my house.

Overall, I like this place, and will visit on a regular basis.  It's good but not amazing.  There is room for improvement, but there are also things they do very well.  Details below.

The good:  The quality of the fish is quite good, the presentation is pretty, the place is spotless and attractive, and the service is friendly.    While the menu is a little heavy on cooked/fried/americanized stuff, as a previous reviewer noted, I believe that they are simply trying to cater to the local market, which has lots of people not familiar with sushi.  Rest assured, you can get all of your favorite sashimi, maguro, and raw fish rolls, too.

The just-okay:  The wait staff is largely inexperienced with what sushi is, and some of them seem inexperienced waiting tables at all; they are on a learning curve.  However, they are friendly and attentive, and I'm sure they'll catch on.  The pricing is definitely on the expensive side if you order a la carte or to go, as I often do.  I'm not sure I can fault them for this, and I would rather pay more for decent quality than get cheap but lousy sushi.  I do think they are still learning how to be consistent; I've eaten from here 3 times and the little details like how much vinegar was in the rice, etc. were not always the same.

Overall, well worth visiting, especially for locals.  They've only been open a few weeks, and I look forward to them working all the kinks out and getting even better.

I have never been particularly impressed with this restaurant and feel that it simply gets the positive reviews that it has because people living in Placerville don't know authentic sushi.
I'd visited this restaurant a few times before with friends who keep telling me to "give it another chance." After tonight I will not. The service is terrible, some of the worst I've ever had anywhere...and I'm a server myself! My iced tea was refilled once and not once more after. The service staff was not anticipatory of our needs, and failed to bring us many things even upon asking for them. The three of us each chose two rolls to start. The server came out with the sushi rolls, but couldn't remember which were which. Then when we began tasting, we realized that the 'Sakura' roll didn't have the baked salmon (it's main component). When they did bring out a corrected 'Sakura' roll, the salmon was crispy, dry, and unappetizing. Their rice was over-cooked and all the rolls fell apart when attempting to use chopsticks to pick them up. My friend ordered another roll (their 'Godzilla' roll) which was to have avocado, spicy salmon, snapper, and a tempura batter. The rubbery product that arrived at our table did not appear to have either of the fish that it mentioned, nor the avocado. It was simply inedible. My friend told the server that he didn't care for the roll, and that after one piece he had lost his appetite. The server's response was angering: he asked us if we had a cat that we wanted to take it home for and told us he wouldn't charge us for it. Well we hadn't been expecting to pay for a roll we hadn't eaten, but apparently when you do all-you-can-eat and do not eat a roll, you are charged for it. Nothing was taken off our bill, which for three people amounted to $89.
I think this restaurant needs to seriously re-evaluate the way it treats guests and attends to their needs. Refilling a guest's beverage is basic service, and I wonder how a place that cannot accomplish that manages to keep it's doors open?

Hands down best sushi I have EVER had and lets just say I know my sushi.  We were driving back home from Tahoe when I got a craving for sushi (not a rare thing) and we stopped at this little restaurant in Placerville. I have high expectations of sushi so I was hesitant at first, but once we got our rolls I was very please.  (we had to order a second time even though we were full because they were just that good).  The service was wonderful and the environment intimate.  I loved this place! And if I didn't live 4 hours away, I would probably be there 3 times a week.

Tucked in behind Taco Bell this place will surprise you. There are maybe 15 seats at the sushi bar and another 20 or so on the floor.  It can get really busy on weekends - so seating can be an issue. If you are hungry for sushi the all-you-can-eat deal is the way to go. $16 for lunch and $22 for dinner - the AYCE menu is pretty extensive and they make what you want to order - it's not like a buffet where the food is just sitting around. Prices are very reasonable if you order ala-carte.  Beer/wine selection is fine.

Yum!  I finally got to go here the other night and I had such a great experience.  Our waiter was really nice and accommodating helping us order and decide on the many options of the menu.
We came in not sure whether to do the all you can eat or not because at dinner time the 21.95 price sounds kinda high.  We decided on doing it after much thought because we were both really hungry and there were so many amazing sounding rolls on the menu.
If only I kept a list of the rolls we actually ordered to talk about how good they were.  I liked them all, although i do have to say the rolls that they say are spicy, are very spicy!  We ordered the macho which only have the one bomb beside it and it was pretty hot, still tasty, but I was picking out some of the jalepeno to make it a little more mild.  We also got several pieces of nigiri which also were tasty and fresh.
The presentation is also great here, they serve the sushi if you are ordering a large amount on these cool wood bridges.  If you just order something small it is on a plate but still very great presentation.
I had a great dinner the other night here and for sure will be going back as soon as I can!!

Very disappointing.  Long wait (50 minutes) to be served our first course, miso soup, though only 4 tables were occupied along with a few diners sitting at the sushi bar.  The serving staff was at all not busy nor very accommodating.  Our food was just ordinary and a bit over priced for its quality.  Rock music playing in the back ground was distracting - not our first choice for this cuisine.  We eat out fairly often, but will not return here.

I few people I know have recommended that I return and try their sushi again. Finally the other night I returned here with my friend that frequents the place. I must say the quality of just about everything has improved. Don't get me wrong, this is still Placerville and taking the name into consideration, what more can you expect that Americanized sushi? But the wait staff was more efficient, there were more diverse rolls, and the upgraded menus were a nice touch. The place seems really open with custom orders too, I would try asking for a special or seeing what they have for boats/platters too, even if it's not on the menu.

I tried several rolls on my recent trip to Amerikan Ichi and only one was even decent. Most rolls fell apart the minute you tried to pick them up making it very hard to eat. I make it a rule to never eat anything raw on my first trip to a sushi bar and I was glad that I stuck to that rule. All rolls were very fishy tasting. The one roll that was decent was an asparagus roll which had asparagus, avocado, and unagi sauce. The others just lacked flavor or were overwelmingly fishy. If you want good sushi save your money and go to Folsom or Sacramento. Over priced and severly lacking.

I stopped here onnmy way back to Carson from Sac the other day on Kara V.'s reccomendation. I saw the familiar faces of Ernesto and Armando behind the bar. I knew them when they owned their place in Minden NV. I always said, if someone would open a all you can eat sushi place in Calif., they would make a killing. The popularity of this place has exploded since its opening like 2 months ago. The is a waiting line outside on Friday's. Yes, Kara, they had Ikura this time and I had lots! Ha ha ...The fish was very good quality and the service was fine. I sat at the bar so the only service involved is clearing the dishes and bringing drinks. They have Japanese food also but I didn't try it. WE got there early like 4:30 for dinner so there was roomn at the bar, soon after though the place filled up. Service can be bad at the best of restaurants, all it takes is one bad apple, but I try not to judge the entire establishment on the actions of one idiot. Give the place a try and if you get shitty anything, let them know and fix it on the spot. Oh yeah Kara, I did see the white guy doing dishes and the Hispanics out front doing the sushi...it all comes around.
