I love Detroit!
This parade and experience is awesome! We parked at Eastland shopping center and took shuttle downtown. The shuttle driver was super friendly.
We were downtown in a matter of moments. We were warm for about five minutes. So tip#1 Wear thermal underwear, bring a portable heater. Oh and unless you like cold concrete turning your rear into slabs of ice, bring a chair. Next we were there for about 3 1/2 hours so tip#2 Bring a thermos filled with your favorite beverage to keep the inside of you warm. Also, there were no vendors selling food. tip#3 Bring a sack of food. If you would like to make some extra money bring a few cases of Snuggies to sell. I would have paid about $30 for one. Other than being cold, (I consider being cold a part of the "hey let's go stand around Downtown MI in November' experience) everyone loved it! Lots of friendly people and a great procession. My son's favorite was the Redford unicycle club. ( and the dancing Hoover girls, go figure) I loved the Big Head's and the skateboard ramp float.
If you're considering going down to the parade , DO IT! -

Since 1924 this parade has been a staple of Metro Detroiters holiday season. Taking place along Woodward Avenue, hundreds of thousands of local folks gather, with hot cocoa and blankets to enjoy marching bands, national music acts, awesome floats and of course Santa.
If you're not concerned with mass amounts of people than this event is a must, if you are enjoy it on t.v. in your p.j's.
There is definitely a nostalgic and sentimental feel that comes with this parade. First, being sponsored by Hudson's which at one point was the highest grossing department store in the world, this parade brings not only local families but a community together. -

i've had plans to go to the parade for years. my sister and i always say we're going and then our hangovers tell us we're not.
so this year the bf had cool tickets to get us right down in the action and free parking in the opra house. sounds too easy to not do it right?
the parade itself is amazing and the floats are bright and beautiful. we got to stand in front of the kern's clock and even saw chuck gaidaca while the lovely smell of kraut wafted our way from a hot dog cart. i seriously got a little tear in my eye over it all.
campus martius was full of people and the christmas tree was amazing. it really made me happy to get the chance to participate in such a lovely tradition. detroit should be proud to have a great parade to rival macy's parade.
