Yep, it's ghetto BUT it's open 24 hours and nothing else in the loop is. I've always been quite happily buzzed when staggering in here so maybe that's why I'm OK with it. Stick with a basic cold sub and you won't be disappointed. Stay away from any of the hot subs or hot dogs.

if i had to choose between eating at americana submarine and a long, painful death, i'd choose death.
husband and i wandered into this 24-hour establishment post-lollapalooza to get some grub while waiting out the foot traffic. worst decision ever. i ordered the meatball sub and got what appeared to be semi-microwaved mini meatballs, drenched in sour tomato sauce, nestled in stale bread - a battery-acid sandwich on cardboard.
husband had two hot dogs, which were slightly better than the multipack of dogs you'd get at aldi.
junk food coupled with disturbingly untended and unappetizing surroundings made this an experience i hope to never repeat. -

I can't believe I liked this place. It's not good. Meat sits out all day and with flies around inside.
Friends have gotten food poisoning from it.
One sandwhich had moldy bread.
It's location is great if you live in the south loop because there's nothing else around but at what cost? -

It's not the most glamorous of atmospheres, but the veggie sub was pretty tasty. Huge slices of cucumber, avocado, onions, tomatoes, and I substituted banana peppers in place of green peppers with some cheese and their sauce. The bread was fresh, and I loved the Jays Hot Stuff chips.

The best thing about this place is the pickle they slap next to the sandwich. I would probably recommend the Bomber sub which is essentially an italian sub with a few types of salami and ham. This place is basically a worse version of Mr. Submarine, but more expensive.
The hot dogs are boiled, not grilled and are pretty pedestrian. -

This place has OK sub sandwiches. As someone said, it's not quite as good as Mr. Submarine, but they try to be like that. It's been kind of hit or miss at this place. Sometimes the sandwiches have been great and other times not. Basically, the ingredients aren't as fresh.
One time I went there and they didn't have lettuce. I'm like... how do you run a sub shop and run out of lettuce? Some of the other stories and flies and moldy bread are scary. Ooh... hope I never experience that.
One reason to give it an extra star that I did is that it's open 24 hours. So when there's nowhere else to go, Americana it is. -

If I could give this place less than 1 star, I totally would. I've literally contemplated calling health inspection on Americana Submarine.
The night I moved out of my Columbia College dorm, my fiancee and I decided that we should go to Americana Submarine because we were hungry and there wasn't much else around.
What a mistake.
First off, our initial sight is a bunch of meat, bread, condiments (especially mayo) all sitting out, Subway style. The only difference is...Subway usually follows health code. There were flies everywhere and the mayo had this strange hard greenish yellow coating on the top of it because it hadn't been refrigerated for at least several hours.
So we're waiting in line and there is one guy making everyone's food. I would usually cut someone like him some slack because that seems like a lot of work for just one person, however, this man was the meanest unhappiest thing I think I've ever encountered in my life.
At one point, I asked him why we get a can of pop, when the menu shows we get a fountain drink with the meal. He literally said "Just fucking take the drink." When I replied with "Sir, can't you just answer my question?" he said "Because we ran out of fucking cups you retard."
Hmm, so we get out sandwiches...mine was a simple turkey with cheese and my fiancee's was a BBQ Beef which turned out to just be roast beef with barbecue sauce squirted on it - not toasted, but microwaved. We're eating...and its absolutely disgusting. 14 dollars later, we bring the other halves home and our dog gets into the bag and literally tries to eat both. Good thing we stopped him, first. Wow.
I guess this stuff is as good as dog-food. -

I will take this over Subway any day. It's a little more expensive then your standard sub/sandwhich shop but it's also a mini-convenience store and it stays open 24 hours as well.
If I skipped lunch during the work day I will sometimes grab one of their large subs which seems to be like two feet long at first when you're lugging it around. -

The girl working behind the counter could not have been more unpleasant as she microwaved my "Mediterranean" chicken in a plastic tub before dumping it on some bread...I really went in there just for some coffee on my way to the train, but when I tried to order coffee, she said they didn't have any. Fine, I got a mini sandwich and a pop. After ordering, I left the counter and saw a huge cappuccino machine to the left. She could not have bothered to tell me that was there?!?! What a bi*ch. And the sandwich was like, straight up curry-spiced. Don't know on what planet that is considered Mediterranean. Maybe if we're talking about Tunisia. I'm sure they make better food though in Tunisia.

I really like this place. Ridiculous signs everywhere, but they make a good amount of different sandwiches. AND it's available in THREE sizes, so you can get something even if you only have $4 left, which I unfortunately always do. 4", 6" and 8" I think? Something like that.
Tuna is even edible here which is a big surprise, I hate everywhere's tuna. I usually get some hot turkey sandwich or something like that. Way better than Subway, JJ, etc. Chill out, watch traffic buzz by, see some bikers cruise through. Good stuff. Saved me many days as a courier. -

i guess it must've been the need for a sandwhich in the area. Not to much worse than I originally remember but not as good as Bari or Heroes.

great 24 hour diner/convenience store in the loop. the perfect way to end a night of dancing, romancing, and sunrise photo taking! i had the ham cheese egg sandwich. really it's typical diner fare so nothing to write home about. but so much better than the sea of chains downtown which i could have chosen at 6 this morning. so glad i didn't!
