It was important that our RV trip included activities to help us explore the surrounding, beautiful Sierra Nevada region. And with the American River in sight of our campground, whitewater rafting made perfect sense.

So we were fortunate to arrange a rafting trip on the American River in the Sierra Nevada region of California courtesy of American Whitewater Expeditions.

Within our first RV experience, it was also the first time we had ever rode rapids on a raft. As a family, we have kayaked, sailed, motored, and of course swam in lakes, oceans, and backyard pools, but this was a different proposition. I decided for this first time experience to go with my son Seth (14), and his first time too.

Along the American River there are several companies that provide a range of whitewater experiences. You can choose half or full day tours, and each typically come with meals, and experienced instructors who educate and enliven the experience.

American Whitewater Expeditions (AWE) has been around for over 30 years as a premier whitewater rafting company on the American River. While researching them, I learned they have a reputation of quality rafting adventures that are exciting, relaxing, and most importantly, lots of fun! Jon, the owner, suggested we take the a full-day tour of the Lower Fork of the river, as a trip more suited for beginners, but with lots of whitewater action.

Once we arrived, we were in the hands of friendly guides who gave us a safety talk, outfitted us with helmets, personal floatation devices, and a paddle. And an important safety tip we received, should end up in the water, was to keep our feet up out of the watter to ward off getting our legs caught up in rocks below the surface.

It also was not necessary to bring our own camera, since professional photographers position themselves along the route and at key rapids to catch the most dramatic moments. So we were grateful for Sierra Nevada Photos who did an awesome job capturing the trip and provided us with a CD of dozens of hi-res images available for purchase right after the trip.

My son and I opted to ride with AWE guide Kaitlyn, who was a bubble of fun, another couple from San Jose, CA, with their two older teen boys. At first, my own son was a little reserved, and a bit hesitant to jump in the water at the optional swimming times or play balancing games, too concerned about his shoes getting wet.

Our trip covered about 15 miles, which lasted five hours, with breaks to jump in the water for a cool swim, and a terrific spread for lunch along the river. Kaitlyn was the source of much laughter with her funny jokes and river trivia. The views of the canyon were simply stunning on this summer day, and we saw interesting birds and other wildlife, such as a rarely spotted river otter.

As the ride went on, I noticed my son cared less about his shoes, and became more courageous! And at the climax of the trip, at a rapid named Hospital Bar, he volunteered to "ride the bull" and take on the rapid while sitting atop the front of the raft. We all wailed with laughter as he predictably got soaked, and fell back into the raft with his feet sticking straight up!

So for me, this trip not only was about trying a new outdoor experience, but a chance to meaningfully connect with my teenage son, with whom there are fewer activities these days we can mutually enjoy, while preserving his sense of "cool". The trip ended with a feeling of exhilaration, and cool drinks in the canyon, from where we were transported back to base camp by bus.

Would we do it again? Oh yes! American Whitewater Expeditions provided an exceedingly competent, fun, and accommodating experience for all. I also discovered they have a fabulous family-friendly campsite on the river that provides camping the night prior, lunch on the river, and use of a thick foam sleeping pad. Two and four person and cabin tents are available to rent, some with cotstents if you need one, and great food you can purchase as a weekend rafting package!

So if you plan to visit the area, I highly suggest connecting with AWE to help you have an awesome rafting experience, but also to help create memories with your family to last a lifetime like I did with my son.

Wow! What a blast. I had my bachelorette party with this company and it was fantastic. Here are some things I liked:

The campground was in a nice location and had lots of space in each site. We had site 18, which was awesome because it was a little more secluded than others and had plenty of space for our two tents. In fact, we could have easily fit in another two if we needed to. There was also several shaded options around our site.

The food was yummy and it was really nice not to have to deal with cooking and cleaning on this camping trip. Our first night they served Tri-Tip and Cod fish along with corn on the cob, caesar salad, garlic bread, and baked potatoes. Then for dessert there were brownies, ice cream, and a berry compote. For lunch on the river we had delicious warps with tortilla artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, hummus, and lots of other veggies. There was meat too but I'm vegetarian so I didn't partake in that part. I would say, make sure to call ahead if you have dietary restrictions. They'll accommodate but need to have a little notice in order to do so.

Our guide was THE BEST! Stacey led us down the South Fork of the American river flawlessly. We wanted to hit a little bigger stuff than usual and she obliged. She was great about figuring out how skill level and then matching the trip to us so we all got what we wanted out of it. She also is a wealth of knowledge about the river, the area, and cheesy jokes.

I would absolutely recommend AWE to anybody looking for a fun adventure in white water river rafting.

This was my first time camping and rafting and I have to say, I had a great time!  I'm such a city girl when it comes to outdoorsy activities, but camping wasn't too bad.  It wasn't real camping, so that probably helped.  We had rented a tent for $16 and when we got there, it was already set up.  We didn't have to pitch it or anything.  They have bathrooms and showers which was nice.  They were pretty clean all around, but the floors were kinda on the dirty side.

Rafting was really really fun!  We did the middle fork, which was a blast!  The tunnel rapid was really really fun.  There was one rapid we were not allowed to take, which I was kinda bummed about.  I guess it was a pretty strong one.  The guide ended up doing it in the raft by himself while we hiked over and watched.  Our guide was really funny and informative at the same time.  He made the mood of the rafting chill.  Like it was a bunch of friends hanging out on the raft.  But he was also good about watching out for our safety.  I'm not positive about this, but I believe his name was Mike.  Try to get him if you can.

The only complaint I have is that there were a couple of drawbacks on our trip.  I wish we had chosen to raft and then camp afterwards.  It probably would have been more fun since we got to the camp grounds at 1 am the morning we rafted, so we never really camped.  Also, the van we were in broke down while we were rafting, so it took a while to get back to the camp grounds since we had to get a new van and grab our stuff from the old van.

I'm still giving this trip 5 stars since I had so much fun and the drawbacks were basically situations that were out of anyone's hands.  If you ever want to go rafting up north, this company is a great place to do it with!

We went in a group of 9 people and had an awesome adventure. The place was difficult to map because they did provide an address on their website. We ended up googling their company and found their physical address to put it in our GPS. As we arrived in Coloma, it was a little hard to find their place for all 3 of our cars as we drove up separately.

As for the rafting part, we took a class 3 on the South Fork of the American River. We were only able to fit 6 on our raft and a guide. Our guide was great because she knew the river very well and was a really cool guide. I would recommend this place to my friends.

    Great trip! Great company!

We went on the Middle Fork of the American River, which is Class III and IV rapids (a bit more intense than the South Fork).

Camping: We went for 1 day only and camping the night before was included free of charge, which was nice. For $10 they'll even provide a tent (with mats) and set it up for you. The campground is not right on the river and is more on a hill with views of the trees and other nearby hills (and check out that night sky ... I don't remember the last time I saw the Milky Way). There are actual bathroom and shower facilities!

Breakfast: For the 1-day trips, lunch is included but no other meals are (you can get a package with meals if you pay extra and the 2-day trips have all the meals included) but we paid about $6 a person for breakfast. It's served at 6:45 AM so be prepared to get up early .... nothing special (bagel with cream cheese or jam, cereal, fruit) but doesn't need to be special that early.

Rafting: A van will take you on a 1 hour scenic drive to get to the boat offloading area of the river. In addition to lifejackets, AWE also uses helmets which is nice. The safety training was really thorough and we practiced it in the water so I felt like I was in good hands the entire time. For the biggest rapids, the guides will have everyone sit inside the boat and will guide the boat through themselves (great view in the Chute/Tunnel rapid). Our boat did flip over once at the end of a rapid (most of the boats didn't so most likely you won't fall out) but the guide and the other boats did a really good job of getting us back in the boat and making sure everyone was okay (no one got hurt).

Lunch: About 2/3 into the rafting trip, the boats all pull to one of the banks of the river and the guides set up burrito/sandwich style lunch for everyone. The lunch spread is pretty darn delicious (either that or we were really hungry by then). Then it's back on the river for 1.5 - 2 more hours.

Photos: They have a photographer in his own kayak that rafts ahead and takes pictures at most rapids. The pictures were really expensive ($150?!) but that cost is split among everyone in the boat so it ends up being about $25 per person if everyone decides to get the pictures.

After rafting: The vans greet you at the end of your trip with cold water and sodas (that hits the spot) and then it's a 40 minute(?) drive back to camp, where they show the photos on a projector. The staff is really nice and we had a great time! Thanks AWE!

I am not sure if the category is right but this is more like a river rafting so boating is close enough!

This was why we made a trip to Northern California over the 4th of July weekend! We did a 2-day combo package Middle Fork/South Fork with 2-night camping and 5 meals included!

We arrived on July 5 at 8pm.  It was 108F. We had to quickly set up our tents and cooked dinner (only meal not included) before the sun set and silent hours from 10pm to 6am.

Following day, breakfast was at 7am and we would leave for rafting by 7:30am for about 1.5 hours bus ride to Middle Fork where we would experience a mix of Class 3 and Class 4 rapids! It's a 18-mile raft and it's a full day with lunch being served in between! There's Tunnel Chute, drops, roaring rapids here and there! Very very heart pounding and exciting! Watch out for the rocks too, notably Texas Chainsaw!

Second day was half day at Upper South Fork but we almost got screwed to go on a full day at Lower South Fork with only Class 1 and 2 rapids (this is boring if you've already been on the Class 3 and Class 4).  It's like Disneyland ride only you would be paddling your own butt through a still water! So, not fun but it's great for someone who isn't into exciting rapids!

Upper South Fork is a mix of Class 2 and Class 3 rapids. There's some crazy rapid surf and splashes. No drops but enough to guarantee to keep you on your feet with all the exciting actions! Nothing too dangerous like Texas Chainsaw in Middle Fork but enough to keep your on the edge and wanting more!

The food was ok for camping food! Beer was warm so it might be weird for some people! Bathroom facility was decent. For women's bathroom, only one shower really worked! One was a mist, second was like peeing, third was a fire hose and fourth was the decent shower!

Overall, the rafting trip was awesome!! Full of excitement at every turn of the corner! It was quite an eye-opening fun experience! I really enjoy it!  If you are worried about falling off or getting thrown off the raft, just make sure you keep a tight grip onto the OS (Oh Sh*t) line. You'll be fine as long as you follow the guide's instruction!

I highly recommend AWE if you are going to go. There are a few other companies but AWE was the only company requires its customer to wear helmet and life-jacket for all classes. Others only require life-jacket! You only live once so let's make it a wise choice! ;-)

We chose this place because of the midweek special but ended up going on a Sunday instead which still offered discounts off of their normal rates. We selected the 1 day trip - Middle Fork American River which is total of 18 miles. We stayed at Auburn the night before and headed out to the Raley's for the scheduled time pick-up.  All in all it was a total blast.  Our guide Taylor was the BEST.  We had two kids (12 & 14) with us (a total of 6 in our group) and he did a lot of extras just for the kids to keep them entertain (surfing, rapids swimming, flooding the boat by wedging it between rocks etc).  The lunch spread was good, tons of tortilla wraps to make your deli wrap!  I highly recommend this place.

We chose this company (AWE) because it was recommended by a neighbor. Our group had an absolute blast!! Highly recommend this company. We did the one-day full river trip (21 miles from Chili Bar on the south fork of the American River to Folsom Lake) on 7-10-2011. We had a party of 7, including two kids ages 10 and 11.  3 of us had rafted before. We had 2 people in one boat, joined by another party of 2 (guides Dan and Stacey), and our other 5 people were in a 2nd boat (guides Chaundra and Christy).

Booking: No problems. Booked on fairly short notice. Received confirmation promptly. Very patient with us when we had lots of questions.

Camping: Nice location. No view of river, but it's a quiet spot with large plots away from the bigger, more crowded ARR campground below. Eating area was spacious. We brought our own tent, but the ones they rent out looked in good condition. They happily lent us pads for our sleeping bags. We bought marshmallows in their little store and they lent us skewers. Really my only complaint is that they need a plumber to come have a look at their women's restroom sinks - 2 of 4 are broken

Service / Staff: A+ all around. Refreshing to have so many cheerful staff people greeting you, answering questions, being patient, *caring* about you. Stacey is an absolute asset to this company and an IDEAL person for this type of job. Full of adventure, enthusiasm, patience, and best of all: a great sense of humor! But all the encounters with staff, including the photo crew from Sierra Nevada Photos were super (the photo people might be a different company, but they seemed like one unit with AWE).

Food: We camped the night before our trip so we had dinner and breakfast with AWE, then lunch on the river. Other reviewers have given good details. The food was very good (especially since I didn't have to pack or cook it!).

Safety: I felt like the staff took safety very seriously and I appreciated the detailed safety instructions and training. With two kids in our group, I was pretty concerned about safety and I felt AWE did an excellent job.

Rafting: The equipment was in good shape. The guides were knowledgeable and fun to be with (especially Stacey). See other reviews for details on the river. In a word: thrilling!

Advice: Be prepared to pay $25 per person or so to buy the photos from the professionals. This is worth every penny. You might have sticker shock paying $150 for photos but the photographers deserve credit for doing a spectacular job. Between our two boats, they took 400 photos and the slide show is outstanding.

I have had the pleasure of rafting with this company on two separate occasions.  One was on the middle fork for a work team building exercise and the other was on the south fork for a buddy's bachelor party.    Both trips were two day excursions.  On the middle fork we set up a camp and the staff put together an awesome feast.  The middle fork definitely got my adrenaline pumping, we went through several class fours on that route, had a class 5 where we had to disembark, kick the raft walked for a bit to find our rafts further down stream.  Meals for the entire duration was included, breakfast were eggs, potatoes, cereal and pancakes, lunches were sandwiches or flat bread wraps and chips and dinners were anything from taco station, pasta or even a BBQ.

More recently (but still several years ago) we did a two day rafting trip for a close friends bachelor party, and the grooms man, not wanting to face the wrath of an angry bride for killing the groom so close to the wedding date, we opted to go for the easier south fork, which was more low key, typically, but we were really lucky anyways, the flow rate was really high that day and spots like Satan's cesspool and hospital bar were firing.  We managed to make several passes at hospital bar, until the inevitable happened, long story short, we have a upside down raft, 7 heads bobbing up and down floating down stream with our gear, fortunately the groom was picked up by another raft further down stream.  The staff provided us with a keg for the bachelor party later that night, I was glad we did have do the low key route the next day, I think everyone was a little worse for ware, but nothing a couple cups of coffee and frigid cold water wouldn't fix...

So for your next team building exercise or you buddy taking the plunge into holy matrimony, or even just for a fun way to spend the weekend when that summer time heat hits, I can't think of a better thing to do!  Ill be back soon, and gonna go hit the North Fork!

I had a great first-time rafting experience with these folks. They have a great beginner trip where you arrive Friday, camp out, go rafting Saturday, camp Saturday night, and leave Sunday. It's a great way to get out of the city on the weekend. My group opted for the easier half-day trip which was the South Fork only. Aside from a bit of a wipe-out early in the day, we thought we would be able to handle something more difficult on a later trip. The guides are very knowledgeable and take great care of you. Everything is provided, and given my clumsiness, I'm glad this company requires helmets. If you're going late in the season, be sure to bring a wetsuit or special rafting fleece. Don't wear cotton or you will freeze!

Just got back from the 2 day lower fork of the American.  GREAT GREAT fun and time.  Day one is pretty mellow....the last hour or so you hit some good rapids.   Day two...starting at Chili Bar.....WOW!  IF you like BIG rapids and action..and IF your guide does it right...he'll stick you in the surfing hole for about 2 minutes right off the bat.  Hold on and hope you don't go swimming!  The guides are great..I'm sure everyone has their favorite...but Jim and Jess were AMAZING.  They both seemed to lead on each day...holding back after each big rapid to be certain everyone else came thru OK.  Day #1 is about 5 hours..day two a little more than 2 hours..but pretty much a roller coaster all the way down.  Coulda had a longer day 2---ready for a 3-4 day on the Rogue next year.  These guys were fun, professional and just a kick to be with.  Highly recommend them.

this was one of the best rafting/camping experiences i ever had!  we went on the 2 day south fork rafting trip.  when we arrived at the campsite, all 5 tents were already set up, and the foam pads were already in the tents as well.  sweet!  all we had to do was bust out our food and begin bbqing and drinking.  i am not allowed to say more about what happened after that hahahaha.

the next morning we had to be ready to go by 9.  i set my alarm for 8, but my friend so kindly woke me up earlier at 7 :P  when we gathered at 9 we signed waivers and got an instructional demo/lecture of what ifs and uh ohs of rafting.  after we got our gear (flotation vest, helmet, and oar), we walked down to the river and got aboard our 6 man raft.

the river was unusually high this year because of all the rainfall, so we got some pretty extreme rapids!  our guide, patrick, looked like an extra from gladiator or 300, so he was very nice to look at, and was very friendly and knowledgable as well.  we rafted until about 12, then stopped to eat lunch, which was a make-it-yourself wrap with assorted sandwich meats, pickles, hummus, and even sun dried tomatoes (fancy!).  o ya, there were even home-made cookies: oatmeal raisin and oatmeal raisin with chocolate chips.  i don't like raisins, so i wasn't big on either one.  raisins remind me of old ppl.

after we ate lunch, we set off for the gorge, which is where all the really exciting rapids are, like hospital bar (you end up at either the hospital or the bar), and satan's cesspool.  along the way, patrick made up some fake historical sites to entertain us.  all in all, it was a great trip!!

Wow! If you've never been white water rafting...What are you waiting for? This is a great mix of adventure and relaxation. This 21 mile trip on the South Fork of the American River was a Father's Day gift from my wife. We were both first timers and I have to say that I have never had a better time on the water. I will never look at a river the same again! The water was a 3 on a scale to 5. We thought it was great for our first time, but I'm ready for the category 4 rapids now. My wife and I were the pace setters (front of the boat) and we loved being the ones who drank the water first. Our guide's name was Alex and he is the guide that you want in your raft! He's also the lead guide(Da Boss!) he gives the safety talk before you get in the water. He made this trip a blast for our team. We had friends from the Coast Guard with us and he kept us all together even though it meant 21 miles of extra work for him! We also had a family of 3 with us that made our trip a blast as well. A good place to make friends. Thank you so much Alex! I can't stress this enough...request Alex as your guide! You will have a leg up on the rest of the rafts. You want adventure...tell Alex. He will make sure you hit the good stuff and he will bring you back in one piece. We even had a 12 year old girl in the raft with us and I have to say that she was a trooper. Didn't get scared one bit. If you want an excellent rafting trip then book with O.A.R.S. if you want an adventure on your trip then request Alex as your guide. I have to rate this as 5 stars. We had the time of our lives and we can't wait to go again. The lunch was excellent, we had chicken breast sandwiches with your choice of bread, chicken sausage, vegetables for topping the sandwiches, pasta, veggie straws, lemonade, cookies, and fresh fruit. Yeah, it was that good. Make sure you do the 21 mile if you're on the South Fork or you will miss all the good rapids! Lunch is half way through your trip! Can't wait to go again.

The guides love what they do, which makes a huge difference in your trip's enjoyment.  Our guide, Syver, was in tune with our group & let us set the pace for joking & chatter, allowing us enjoy the quiet beauty or offering observations & names of places regularly but not excessively. His calm & easy confidence lead the group well. I felt confidence in our guide, as well as the fact that AWE was one of the 1st companies on the river with years of experience under their belts.

We did the full day South Fork American River trip:

    Pros:
1st part of river is a leisurely class I & II, nice easy introduction to river, oars, being on the raft, especially for those who don't know what to expect & may be just a bit anxious. Also good time to get to know your guide & their intentionally lousy jokes and learn about the river. Stopped for lunch around 12:30 (delicious wraps w/wide & generous variety of meats, cheeses, guacamole, humuus, veggies) & homemade cookies!

Free camping! You'll save $30- $50 on camp site fees by pitching your tent on their dedicated site, included in your trip. Warm showers! Swimming pool! LOTS of flush toilet, clean, real bathrooms. Pretty grass sites under canopy of Oak tree shade.

Large company advantage: If you get tossed out of the raft (like I did) during a rapid, there's another boat around to snatch you out of the water (which you are thankful for, to avoid having getting banged around in the rocks thru another rapid).

    Cons:
1st part of full day So. Fork can be a bit long & slow for those wanting the hit the much more exciting class III rapids in the gorge (a 1/2 day there is recommended or those wanting more action). If you have young kids or a high metabolism requiring food every 2 hours like I do, put energy bars in a ziplock down your shirt/life vest to keep the whining to a minimum. Also, even though we convened at 9:00 am, most likely you will not be in the water until 10-10:30 am, due to waiting for dam water release, safety presentations equipment fittings, etc.

Camping onsite. You'll be awaken (even with earplugs) at 6:00 am by the constant roar & rumble of trucks & Incoming SUVs several feet from your tent, getting ready for 7:00 am middle river trips (while your trip is not leaving until 10:00 am). Campsites do not afford privacy right next to one another & can be noisy/in your face with neighbors.

Large rafting company meant that we had 9 rafts go out at the same time several other companies put out (to coincide with timed dam release flows), so you are never alone...the river can look like a conga line version of HWY 80 during rush hour.

While it doesn't happen often on these class II to III rapids, it is scary being tossed out of the raft & into white water. I was sitting in the back next to the guide. Me & the kid in front of me got tossed on technically tricky Fowler's. I made the mistake of trying to grab & push the kid back into the raft while holding my oar (guides joke about oar loss), but then got sucked away from the boat by the current (I should have just dropped my oar & focused on grabbing the kid & the raft). The current is so strong that you should really be a strong swimmer/have presence of mind to try to swim back to the raft or to where the guide points you to safety. Additionally, you can be bumped & tossed over boulders & bruised. Even as an adult, it's very scary at the time & I was shaken up...I was so glad none of the kids in my raft had to go thru it. After the fact, it's a great memory & adrenalin rush, as well as folks being extra nice to you!

Tips: wear technical or synthetic fabrics that dry quickly/don't hold water or protect against the sun. Long shorts & sleeves will help guard against too much sun (you will fry in summer) as well as help avoid putting extra sunscreen into the river.

Most of the guides just wore regular street clothes = light, long sleeve collared buttoned shirts & board shorts. I wore low cut wool sports locks with my running shoes to avoid blisters.

No place to stash personal belongings on day trips, so sports armband or waistpack to hold your sunscreen, lip balm, energy bars is helpful.

You will be required to wear helmets, so try to select a pair of thin-armed sunglasses with Croakie type leashes, as these will be pressed into your skull.

Use high quality, waterproof sunBLOCK. Apply 1/2 hour BEFORE you get in the water to be fully absorbed by your skin, otherwise it'll just wash off, needlessly polluting river. Roll on sticks good on river.

In 90 degree weather, the water is still around 50 degrees, so if you run cold like I do, you will be cold until the sun dries you off several minutes later.

Next trip, we will plan to camp there night after trip because it's fun to hang out with your new "friends" & share the tales & thrills of the day.

i made an online reservation 2 weeks ahead of time but didn't received a confirmation so after a 4 days of waiting w/o any response from them i called them and was told that they just read my email that day. so i made another online reservation (i like online coz most often they misspell my name and email add) and was confirmed by Nancy thru email that i got the 7 people spot for the said date and was told that somebody will call me the next day further arrangements. the next day i received a call from them that they already filled that 7 spots and that Nancy wasn't told about that reservation. They have a calendar showing how many spots were available on a certain river and date and the time i made reservation im pretty sure they still have spots left for 7 person that's why i booked w/ them. it's non-science, if theres no more spots im not gonna book and will just look somewhere else.

so i spent all day trying to book a last minute reservation in several ratfting companies but most of them were fully booked. im still waiting for a confirmation while i write this review. im keeping my fingers crossed. by the way i booked the middle fork river trip w/ camping.
