I put in a 50 gal. electric water heater Feb. 2002, Got a leak in the tank today, May 13,2012. That's 4 years 4 months past the 6 year warranty. Most the others went out a week after the warranty! So I can't complain none, Hope the next one lasts as long!

Hi yes,
I agree, this water heater sucks a**. It doesn't deserve even a star, every year we had to fix it. Now this year there is a leak. I have the option to use there warranty but I rather pay for a new boiler from another company. Also with their warranty, a person would have to bring the broken water heater to one of their wholesalers before they would replace it. Also when I asked a list of their wholesalers, they did not even have something simple as that. So don't buy american water heater -

A month ago my pilot light to my 2 year old American Water Heater would no longer stay lit. I called them and they sent me a new gas valve which cost $100 to install. This did not solve the problem. Then they sent me a new thermalcoupler and said I could install it myself. I followed all the instructions and after the pilot light would not light at all. They seriously wanted to send me another thermal coupler and have me spend more of my own money to have it installed. After getting very upset with customer service they finally agreed to allow me to return my unit for a new one. Problem with that is it would cost another $600 to get installed. Ultimately I decided not to have another of the their crappy heaters installed and just spend the money on something decent. If you are considering buying a water heater, absolutely do NOT under any circumstances purchase an American Water Heater. They are TERRIBLE.

Bought my American Water Heater in 2006, a ProLine model. Within 3 years the thermocouple went out. Would not light. Called and was told there was a defect in the original part, and it would be replaced with an upgrade kit which would take care of the problem. After 4 days with no hot water it arrived and was very difficult to install. It worked as long as the first one, and now (just before the warranty expires) it failed again. Another 4 days with no hot water and $200 in plumber bills to fix the ignition system again. THESE HEATERS ARE BAD, BAD, BAD!!! I have owned water heaters all my life on multiple properties. They have ALL, without exception, worked for years until the tank failed (15+ years). This company produces junk, and has the gall to tout it as "made in America". If the is the best we can do, the Chinese have it made!!!

The new thermocouple only worked for a few months. Finally said screw it and bought a new water heater made by a different company.

I have personally had to pay several times to have my American Water Heater repaired and replaced. I would highly recommend not buying this brand. Their customer support is not good at all.
I have posted a video on You Tube titled "My American Water Heater Experience" The purpose of the video is to solicit advise on why the flame is yellow and to answer the question as to why there is water dripping inside this brand new replacement unit.
