We had an early morning flight at Midway and were quite nervous about a timely and reliable pick-up. We called American United the night before and the driver picked us up early in Bucktown. The cab was a bit smelly but the service was quick. Would definitely recommend for a reliable pick up.

American Cab responded by saying they will take care of the problem, a woman named Luminipa called and said she'll fix the charges, IT NEVER HAPPENED, THEY NEVER CALLED and now the phone goes right to voicemail.

Had a great experience. Dispatcher was friendly and easy to deal with. Cab was on time automated service called 30 seconds before the cab was there. Then once I was in the cab a real human call came in to make sure I had gotten my cab. Cab driver was very nice and quick.

Awesome drivers, garbage dispatchers. I'm outside right now and they're telling me a cab is here. News flash morons, there is no cab here. Called back, told me 5-20 mins again, and nothing ever came.
Give your business to flash cab, dispatch, yellow cab....literally anyone but American United. -

Bard ... in the historical sense, is an entertainer ...
one might think their lot died out centuries ago, but today - I came across one who drives a CAB here in Chicago - for THIS company!!
I had the best trip I've ever had (in my LIFETIME) - easy to talk to ... it's literally like being in your very own musical! I wanted a copy of the song he sang me!
you cannot call to request this guy. his cab finds YOU! guided by the cosmos, he manages to be in the neighborhood when SOMEONE needs someone like him to happen by.
the ride was EASILY worth far more than the metered fare.
If only more drivers were like this kind entertaining soul! -

I called for a cab the night before, and when it didn't arrive on time I called again in the morning. They were totally unapologetic about the delay and asked if I still wanted the cab. I called a different service and got picked up in ten minutes. Half an hour later, American Unites called with an update: still no cab. Needless to say, I will never try to use this service again. One star only because zero isn't an option.

If nothing else, I can thank them for being the final shove I needed to start Yelping. I called at 9:25 PM and asked for a cab for 9:50 PM. The guy told me they could only be there in between 5 and 20 minutes or I had to reserve at least half an hour in advance. Ok, this makes no sense, but I'll play along. "Ok, could I have one in half an hour at 9:55 PM then?" Then they tell me they can do it around 9:55 PM, but it might be after 10 PM. I explain the reason we need the cab is so we can catch a train on time, so timing is pretty important. Finally, I realize it's not going anywhere and resolve for them to get here as close to 9:55 as they can. I thank the man and hear nothing but dead air. Confused, I say, "Hello?" He tells me he is still there and I'm all done. I say, "Oh, ok, thank you." Click, he hangs up.
They show up at about 10 PM, pretty close. So they get an extra star for that. -

Alright, I'm hoping my 5 star review won't curse me the next time I call a cab and have to wait a long time.
I've called three times, THREE. I even called New Year's Eve and the lady said they were so busy she could not give me an estimated wait time... and they STILL showed up in 5 minutes. ALL THREE TIMES! Now that's awesome!
Granted, I live in the same zip code, but damn, they're good! I have no complaints, they always come super fast!
They are my only choice for sure! -

I had a very good experience last week when I needed a taxi to get to Midway. The driver arrived on time and was a very nice person to talk to.
I called at around 9am for a taxi at 11:30am and had no problems with the driver whatsoever. I paid with credit and tipped in cash. -

Dear American United,
We need to talk, please have a seat. In the beginning our relationship was magical, but lately I think you are starting to take me for granted. I know that we were never exclusive, but lately I feel as if you don't even like me anymore. In the last 72 hours you have...
- Sent me a cab driver who not only couldn't follow simple directions, but felt that he had to follow the side streets with the most stop signs and see how many times he could abruptly stop and bang my head off of the plexiglass divider. You know I like the rough stuff too, but really?
- Sent a cab driver to take me to the train, but the driver couldn't find the apartment or the train station. This caused no small amount of angst to my lady friend, I am just glad the train was late. I will give the driver credit for not driving off without us when my lady friend screamed "Jesus Christ, unlock the fucking door!"
- And what may be the final straw... you stood me up. I placed my usual call and was told 10-30 minutes, 30 minutes later I get a call back "sorry, we don't have any cabs available in your area"... you made me walk. I cried all the way to the El.
I am going to keep your number in my speed dial, but don't be shocked to see another cab parked in my driveway.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Cab pick-ups are kinda iffy, right? You call, you never really know if they're going to come get you. It's a complete crapshoot. However, if you're living in Humboldt Park, you need to put the number for American United in your cell phone. They WILL pick you up. They also show up within about 10-15 minutes. Seriously, people. That's service!
When Philip, our cab driver showed up, I was smoking a cigarette outside. My friends and I were like, "What's your stance on smoking in your cab?" His response? "I don't give a fuck if you smoke crack in my cab." Well, alrighty then! Away we go!
So not only is Philip highly entertaining, he got us downtown lickity split, didn't try to take crazy, convoluted routes to up the meter and he was super funny. Hands down the best cab driver I've ever had.
Yay for American United!Listed in: You Can Smoke Here!

Reliable on the northside of Chicago? I have not had such luck. I always get the 10-30 minutes line then when its 35 minutes and I call, "No cabbie has responded to your call". Um, did they even dispatch one? This morning I was late to work because they did not send me a cab. I called Blue Ribbon cab and had one in 10 minutes.
Im not sure what American United Cabs deal is but I can NEVER get a cab with them no matter what time it is. Simply not reliable.Listed in: You may want to reconsider.

In my decade or so living in Chicago, I have finally added a cab company to my phone...American United, meet Amanda's new phone.
We had planned ahead and called about thirty minutes before we needed a pickup. The dispatcher advised us to call back right when we needed a cab cuz she could have one there in five minutes. Of course, being the skeptic I am, I was nervous about this, but we did as she had directed. When we were ready to go, we called, she said ten minutes. Lo and behold, ten minutes later, our trusty chariot arrived.
Even better for us, it was a twofer weekend. Two calls, two timely pick-ups, two nice cab drivers. If that's not enough to save this number to your phone, I don't know what is. -

Need to get to the airport by 3:30a.m? A little more than you can ask of most friends.
How to find a GOOD cab service? Yelp has your back.
Pfshaw... yellow pages schmello pages! I'm looking up Craig B. because the man is never wrong and doesn't sugar-coat a thing (alcohol is an entirely different story... but that is truly a more entertaining series for him to tell- ask him to perform the dance numbers to go with the tale. Awesome).
Point is: I had to be at the airport Monday at 3:30a.m. which means I stayed up all night trying to pack, watching bad infomercials on television and anticipating being stood up.
They were there EARLY, helped with my suitcase and waited for me to make up my mind which shoes to wear! Then got me to the airport on time!
Call them! You won't be sorry!Listed in: Feeling great, looking GOOD!

I can't speak to the company as a whole, but the American United cab driver that picked me up last night was a scammer and made me fearful for my safety.
I flagged down a cab near Belmont and Western. Before I got in, I told the driver where I was going and asked whether he was willing to take a credit card. Mind you, the law is that all cabs are supposed to accept credit cards now, but I always ask anyway, because I don't want to get hassled. He says, sure, no problem, "don't you know the law is that we all take them?"
I get in. He starts driving away. He doesn't turn on the meter. He says, "your fare will be $8. I want to run your card now."
I ask why he's not running the meter. He says, "here, I'll run the meter now." he flips it on and then immediately off. He repeats that the fare is $8 and he wants to run my card right then (probably two miles from my destination). The fare sounds about right, so I reluctantly give him my card (stupid). He runs it and hands me a receipt, holding onto my credit card. I think I'll wait to sign it and give a tip until I'm dropped off at my location. He tells me I need to sign it right then. I say I'll sign it when I get to my destination.
He pulls over and jerks to a violent halt, and turns around, and snarls. "You're missing the point. You need to sign this right now so I can make sure it goes through and you don't make me go bankrupt." He was so angry I seriously thought he was going to hit me or crash the car.
I immediately demanded my card back and got out of the cab. I called 311 and reported him and his cab number, which I thankfully wrote down. Actually, here it is for all of you because this guy was such a goddamn sleaze: 2522. AVOID. -

Simply bevause I was pretty hard on Chicago cabs service...I'm on the north side of the city way too much, especially late at night, which isnt good when you live way south. Point is, i need cabs, often. So when I do flag down these guys they who not only know where things are, are pretty reliable, and move pretty quickly. The last cabbie gave me a card so I could finally order them when I needed them and they were great over the phone and arrived earlier than they promised. Nice.
Best part, despite living incredibly far and usually costing over $25 from Wrigley the drivers usually cut me some slack on the price. Sweet! -

Finally got back home this morning! It was pouring rain as I landed at O'Hare. Next order of business was getting to the cab line. As the luck of the draw had it I ended up with American United Cab.
My driver was Babatunde and he told me he was from Nairobi. He was actually a pretty funny guy, and his thick accent only made everything he said all the more comical. He must have gawked at every pretty girl he saw in traffic. It was hilarious seeing the girls catching him looking at them and then in return giving him a dirty look. He failed miserably every time. I told him he needed some lessons from me.
As funny as Babatunde was I have to admit that the 2 star deduction comes from the fact that the guy drove with the heat blasting! I mean who needs it to be 90 degrees in their car like that? I found that to be very uncomfortable. Also the African drumming on the steering wheel at stop lights was kind of annoying. -

I really have to reiterate how much I love this cab company.
Just the other night, a cabbie picked the BF and I up from a party, at which point we realized we only had a few bucks and credit cards. He said no problem and we were on our way.
Eventually, he joined in our conversation about politics, which was really interesting. He was refreshingly nice and we bantered back and forth the whole ride. By the time we pulled up to our stop, he said we could pay with whatever few bucks we had on us, no problem that we were short.
It wasn't until I got out of the cab the I noticed it was (of course!) American United. I LOVE these guys.1 Previous Review: Show all »

The most reliable cab service on the northside of Chicago. What makes them so great?
They arrive when they say they will.
The cabbies have been pretty good, understandable, and sometimes downright courteous.
Customer service: an actual human being. How nice.
Unlike other cab services that shall not remain nameless (FLASH,ugh), American United shows up consistantly and they have been prompt and efficient. And the cabs I've ridden in don't smell like something died in them, at least until after I get out of it......... -

I had the best taxi driver on the way from O'Hare to the Loop on Monday night. His name was Gabriel, and he was originally from Eritrea. When he was a kid, he taught himself how to read by reading any newspaper he could get his hands on, including papers used to wrap groceries. Having learned Swedish, he applied to a college in Sweden and got accepted, but the Eritrean government wouldn't let him leave the country.
When he could finally leave, he did, for the United States. He ended up in the Chicago area around 1987 and has driven a taxi for most of his time in the U.S. He lives in Evanston and loves the city. Even tried to persuade me to move back. "Why did you ever leave?" he asked. "We have everything here, and if we don't, you don't need it!"
Needless to say, the ride from the airport to the hotel flew by. If Gabriel's any indication of what the other drivers for this taxi company are like, they're worth checking out. He doesn't drive weekends, but if you call during the week, maybe you'll get lucky!Listed in: The Chicago Way

I have these guys in my phone. I use them primarily for early early morning rides to the airport and they never disappoint. I can only say two moderately negative things that have nothing do to with the actual goal of picking me up and taking me to my destination. The first is for a 5am pickup they sometimes show up early. Which is totally fine but it sometimes leaves me rushing to finishing getting ready. Hey, 10 minutes early at 5am means something! Second, about 50% I get a new-ish cab, the other 50% I get an older cab. All are functional and safe, just sometimes it's a little one the "eh" side.
However, I have called about a dozen, maybe dozen and a half times now for a 5am (ish) pickup and they have always always always showed up on time, been very courteous, and took a good legit route to the airport. I will keep using them exclusively until I have reason not too.
I also used them once for an afternoon pickup and that went fine too. Dispatch is always nice. No real complaints at all.
I live in Lincoln Square area, 60625, by the way. -

American United is not my 1st love when it comes to cab companies, but they are definitely worth a try!
I think that American must have more drivers because sometimes when 1 company can't find me a cab, American can pull through for me. Most cab companies will tell you the wait is 5-20 mins, 10-30 mins, but American usually gets me a cab in 10 minutes or less, whether I'm in Lincoln Park or my boyf's house (aka BF Nowhere).
Their operators are always INCREDIBLY friendly, polite, and nice on the phone. They always tell me to have a great day!
Most of their drivers are great, but I have had a few weird ones, like the driver who said it was MY fault when my debit card didn't work on his little machine, so he drove me to an ATM to get cash instead. I pointed out that my card worked fine in the ATM, yet after I begrudgingly paid him, he said, "Now you've learned your lesson, so you'll know better next time." Seriously? Yeah, I'll know not to trust cab credit card machines! -

Disclaimer: I have only ever called them a day or so in advance, never when I needed an immediate/prompt pickup.
American United always shows up on time.....five minutes early actually (be ready early or you might get a little attitude when you get in the car). The drivers are always friendly, although, I've found pretty much all cab drivers are friendly if you are (do unto others, ya know?) I needed a ride to the airport over the summer (when the Olympics were on) and my driver was in a very irritable mood since I came out 2.5 minutes after he got there and it was the last trip he had after working the night shift. Anyhow we discussed where I was flying to (Honduras), which somehow led to the intel that he was from Tunisia...so I brought up the Tunisian swimmer who blew everyone else out of the water in his event (no pun intended), and by the end of the ride he was all smiles and bade me a friendly farewell.
I live West of Western and have never had an issue...but it's directly on Diversey so I think it's a little more convenient for them to pick me up. -

If you need to be picked up west of Western ave... you can count on these guys to blow you off.
If you need a ride east of Western they will probably not only Gladly pick up, but also offer you a complimentary hand job .
American United Cab you have left me stranded ( like an total schmuck) for the last time. Not only have you lost all future business from me but You can also Kiss my big fantastic ass . You suck .
I roll exclusively with Flash now. They are my official Barrio taxi. -
Review from Jenny S.
I have had horrible luck with this cab company lately. Situation 1: Call the cab, get the "10 to 40 minute" prediction. Wait 45 minutes. Call again. "Another 10 minutes" and then waited another 15 minutes, call again "Sorry, no one is available"
Then the second time I call the cab, "10 to 40 minutes" wait impatiently for 45 minutes, call "Oh yes, the cab came to pick you up but no one was there" I explain that can't be possible since we've been waiting at the window for the whole time. So I order another cab and am told it will be 10 minutes. 15 minutes later I call back and hear "We have no request at all for this address"
Then the third time I get the "10 to 40 minute" prediction and am standing at my window waiting for the cab and I see it drive quickly down my street and not stop. Not return. I call and am told "No one was there so we left"
Nice. -

Long story short: My roommates mom comes into town and we plan on a lovely dinner at Ristorante al Teatro in Pilsen. We call and make reservations there. And of course, we responsibly call American United Cab to secure a ride well in advance. Why this place? After a ride back from the Sox 35th redline to our apartment, the driver handed us a business card and told us that if we need rides around the Bridgeport area and beyond, call ahead and they will gladly serve us.
We call over an hour ahead to be safe:
US: "Hi, we would like a cab from "Point A" to "Point B" to come at 8:30."
DISPATCHER: "NO! You gotta call back in half an hour."
US: "Okay, but if we do, we can still get one here at 8:30? We have a dinner reservation at 9."
DISPATCHER: "You can only call half an hour ahead of time."
So we wait half an hour and call again. This time, they confirm and say a cab will be there by 8:30 and will call when it is near. 8:30 rolls around and we are all downstairs on the steps peering down the road for the cab. 8:45: still no cab. We call:
US: "We called half and hour ago for a cab to be sent to "Point A" and it's 8:45 now. No call, no driver."
DISPATCHER: "You gotta wait 30 minutes"
US: "No. Well called an hour ago, you told us to call back a half an hour later. You confirmed we would get a cab. We have dinner reservations in 15 minutes and you're telling us we have to wait another 30?"
DISPATCHER: "No one was sent over there. You gotta wait 30 minutes."
Aw HELL NAW! How they gonna play us like that when we got a mother in town AND reservations? They know how hard it is to catch a cab around here and they STILL gave us the run around!
BOO on that driver that gave us the card
BOO on the dispatcher
and
BIG BOO on American United Cab. -

Thank you, AU, from the bottom of my heart, for helping me to miss my 9:20 AM flight out of O'Hare.
We called and gave you plenty of time to get us to our destination. But, who would have expected that cab drivers don't actually like to drive out to the airport on Monday mornings? And who would have expected that your company wouldn't have the courtesy to call me back and at least inform me that your drivers are lazy slobs, and that maybe we should try another taxi company?
I mean, we only missed our freaking flight, you douchetards.
Do not use AU unless you want to spend an hour on the phone with your airline's customer service department, trying to get yourself booked on new flights.
Who knows: They might be okay around town, though. -

Showed up at 6:15am as scheduled on Christmas morning...they called they were on there way and called when they got there. Pretty sure my hungover self would have slept through my flight if it were not for their punctuality. My friend made a reservation for a morning pickup as well and they were on time for him also. Great service. Friendly too.

Thanks AU... I called you with ample time to get to work this morning, and I go to work during the wee hours of the morning, a low traffic time of the day. Your dispatcher confirmed my address, name and phone number... I waited...
As I became more and more late for my shift, I called you back... Your dispatcher told me that the driver called and was outside... I was outside... Your dispatcher told me that he dispatched the cab to 123 South Main St... I live on 123 North Main St... Why did your dispatcher confirm the address correctly, then send the cab to the wrong address? Why did your dispatcher say you called when you didn't?
AU, you're lucky I was able to flag a cab, or I'd be doing a lot more than venting to yelp about your, once prompt, now horrible customer service. -

I previously gave another cab company a pretty good review because they had been the most dependable, and I've found Chicago cab companies to be anything but. However, every once in awhile I would still experience an hour plus wait with them.
I have never experienced this issue with American United. Now, a big part of that could be location. American United is reportedly headquartered in Roscoe Village, and I live in Logan Square. I use them most often to travel within Roscoe Village/Logan Square/Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village/Humboldt Park. I've only ever called them when I need a cab, and they always arrive before or within the 10 to 30 minutes quoted. I've never had a memorably bad driver.
So, this is the one I call first! -

American United is close to my home so you would think we could get a cab on time. After numerous occurrences of this not happening, I finally decided to yelp about it. Several months ago I needed a mini van cab for 6 passengers. When I called, the dispatcher said I needed to call 24 hours in advance for this special order. This past weekend I called Friday afternoon for a Saturday evening minivan cab. 5 minutes before I asked them to arrive American called & asked if I still needed a cab. I confirmed that I did only to hear that they didn't have one available but would call me when they had one. We ended up driving to our reservation, leaving the driver to remain sober for the holiday celebration. Our sitter told us American called 25 minutes later to say they had a cab. What's the point of calling 24 hours in advance! Yellow cab will have our business from now on.

Avoid this cab!!! I called to get a cab at 9pm. They were puntual but the issue was when I gave them the address. I had given them the address where I needed to go. The cab driver kept telling me that was not a correct address and then ask me if I knew how to get there. All this was going on while he was driving around. He said he didnt have a gps and called the dispatcher who didnt know how to give him directions. Avoid this cab company. They expect you to know to get to your destination and it would be okay if you were from the area but I'm not from the area!

Five stars for any cab service that allowed me to pile into the back seat with my FOUR dogs! Yes, thats right. When you call they will ask if you have pets and if so, they will dispatch to a cabbie that doesnt mind transporting pets. I use them quite often and have always had decent service. Maybe that is because I always get the animal lover types by default!

Unlike Yellow Cab, I have American United in my speed dial. They always answer promptly and even have my last used address saved in their system. The time they give me is always accurate, with the cabs almost always arriving within 10 minutes. They are pleasant, and most importantly, they give you a call when they arrive and are willing to wait while you find your shoes, take the elevator down, say good bye, etc. And the best part is that they never give you a hard time about using a credit card. A+ for American United.
