American Supercamp
1 review for American Supercamp
What: Dirt-track training for all motorcyclists. Great fun and somewhat useful when stuff goes bad on the street.
Where: I went to a school in Colorado, but they teach all over.
Length: That's a very personal question. Oh yea. Two days.
How much: $625
The Basics
- Turn the bike by drifting the rear end
- Scrub speed by getting the wheels perpendicular (or close enough) to the line of travel so you are ploughing, not rolling
- Your shoulders are parallel to the ground at all times (bike is leaned over, you aren't), your inside elbow is way down, your outside elbow is way up, and your outside knee is pushing against the top of the tank
- Your inside leg may or may not be down, but its mostly for balance, not weight baring, and pretty optional. Yes, I was surprised too.
- Run lines that let you spend the absolute minimum amount of time leaned over
- Playing exclusively on dirt or mud on a very tight but low speed course using 125CC or 200 CC bikes that weight less than two hundred pounds.
Street Applicability - Knowledge and reflexes that could come in handy even on your 500 pound sportbike
- When you are sliding the worst thing you can do is what most road racers instinctively do... lean forward and to the inside of the slide. The correct place to be is sitting up with your shoulders rolled back to keep weight on the rear tire. You never, never, never (it bears repeating) want to be leaning forward of the bars.
- During the two days you'll get out on the course at least twenty times, and each time do at least 15 laps. Figure at least five slides per lap and that's 1500 slides over the two days. That's enough sliding for pretty much anyone to learn a reaction other than panic when the rear tire takes an unexpected journey of self discovery.
Fun?
Hell yea, I'll be back. Great people, lots of riding, useful skills, what more could you want?
