Once wasn't enough, we made 2 appearances here while in the area. Once for coffee and the second time we gave breakfast a go.
Obviously we found their brew to be of the pleasing sort - with offerings of light medium and dark roast.
I had the breakfast parfet, the granola was worth writing home about and given the affiliation with American Spoon preserves that was a nice added bonus.
The rest of the menu was filled with offering that are fresh organic and local, loved it! -

I live for their pistachio gelato. When I'm headed to Petoskey, I *always* stop here, and talk about the gelato for a week before, and a week after.
It has evolved a bit over the years, and since I don't live there anymore, it's pretty striking how they've differentiated themselves from the other cafes in downtown. creative & upscale cafe menu now, though I never go for the food..
My visit this summer would have been stellar if not for the supremely disinterested young women running the gelato counter- likely high school girls working through the summer before college who were more concerned with discussing other young women in an unflattering light- I'm forking over $10 bucks for ice cream, please make eye contact and smile at the very least. Or don't, but avoid smack-talking your peers!
However, grab your little cup of heaven and head out to the park, people watch and enjoy one of life's finer indulgences! -

Ha. I love that I am a regular of a place I went to on vacation. Gee whiz. This place (and the town, Petoskey) are what quaint vacation dreams are made of. I ordered the quiche of the day which was just ... divine, which sounds like such a pretentious word but it is the most accurate descriptor! And my mom and sister got the burger, which I tried and it was just unbelievable. I consider myself very picky about burgers too. The gelato was delicious and dense so you only need a little, and the servings are small, as they should be. This place is pretty close to perfect. I could have eaten there for every meal.

American Spoon is a staple during my trips Up North...I mean the Jam/Jelly sold in the actually store next door is featured on the Pure Michigan ads.
This trip I was a bit full and didn't go with my usual 3 flavor medley. I did go with the Red Raspberry and the Burnt Caramel. Both were delicious and the Ras was just a flavor explosion. It is usually hard for me to narrow down what flavors I want, so luckily the kind folks at the counter have no problem dishing out multiple free samples.
If you are around Petoskey having a bite to eat, pass up dessert wherever you are so you can save room for some American Spoon (rhyming unintended). -

I've never had the lunch foods here, but I hear the food is at least decent, though I'm not sure if it really matches the prices.
The gelato is what I'm reviewing...and it's damn good. -

Sure, the gelato is amazing, but try the food: it's fresh, organic, local.

We stopped here for gelato -- many flavors! ( I really enjoyed the honey.) We wanted to come back for breakfast, after we read the menu and saw the emphasis on fresh/locally sourced foods...but our travel plans changed suddenly and we weren't able to follow up. So anyone reading this will have to have breakfast at American Spoon and report back so we can see what we missed.;-) Bonus: The restaurant is right across from a city park/bandstand where, in the summer, you can enjoy live entertainment. And it's in Petoskey's historic Gaslight District -- plenty of walk-friendly shopping opportunities to work off all that good food.

I can't speak on the lunch menu as I haven't seen it, or tasted the food. However I can discuss the gelato. And it is delicious. I'm a sucker for any place that wants to give me a ton of free samples until I decide what I want.
This particular instance I settled on mango, pineapple, and red raspberry. All three were really good.
By no means am I gelato expert but the texture seemed consistent with the few other times I've eaten it.
I'd easily go back to the American Spoon the next time I'm in Petoskey. -

Damn delicious gelato (had the blueberry and the chocolate), a very friendly young woman behind the counter, and prices that are 20% to 30% lower than what I'm used to paying in the DC area. The space was nice, as well -- very clean and sunny -- although I got my gelato to go.
Listed in: The Ice Cream List, GR and Northern MI in a few…

The gelato here is great - pretty good selection of gelato and sorbet. They do coffee drinks and food as well, the coffee is good, but I have never eaten a real meal here so I can't speak for the food. Friendly staff. Great location right by a park so you can eat your gelato at one of the outside tables with a great view of the park.

The turtle espresso drink is my favorite. They do have outdoor seating, but just a couple tables.

food-wise, this place is definitely underrated. the food is excellent and original. we had the farm egg sandwich and the panzanella salad. both were well-made with good quality ingredients. the mango smoothie, made from sorbet, was refreshing. we're picky eaters who dine out frequently, and this cafe has made our list of favorites.
