One of my favorite clothing stores ever! Between the denim and the shoes, the jewelry and the vintage clothing.....it's all cool, interesting, different.
If you have the time....take time to browse.
You will undoubtedly find something that you just HAVE to HAVE.
FREE PARKING, in the garage next door. Make sure to get your ticket validated.
and PLEASE TIP the guy who stands there all day guarding your car! He deserves it! -

Sorry "American Rag Cie". For years, I've had bad thoughts about you. But, no longer.
True, while they have very expensive new items, there are also many reasonably-priced things too, and many value-priced vintage (used) items. The main message here: prices are varied and there are offerings for most any customer.
They have plenty of clothes, shoes, jewelry, colognes -- new and used -- this is boutique shopping peeps!
I came away with a very cool black-tee ($26), and new, all-black converse shoes ($48). A little investment like that, and I'll be stylin' enough to be Scarlett Johansson's next beau. -

American Rag Cie has been a favorite since I moved here 10 years ago.. I love to browse around their eclectic collection of new and vintage clothing.
The store is HUGE & there are always plenty of cute boys to check out while perusing the denim sale table where I always get lucky!! $40 Goldsign jeans marked down from $225! -

Somebody wake me when it's over. Maybe it's the fashion lately, but that's just giving the buyers benefit of the doubt. I'm bored. Very bored. Some of the accessories were cool relatively speaking compared to the clothes...I guess...meh.

Review from Sylvie C.
I can never resist buying something at American Rag, even though I know there's a 75% chance that whatever I bought is way too strange to ever wear. It's a problem.
The real goods are in the SHOES and the JEWELRY. Both shoes and jewelry are so utterly unique and totally wearable. You don't end up buying some overpriced caftan with zippers and hoods just because it looked cool on the hanger, instead, you end up with incredible keith haring graffiti earrings, or the best pair of kick-anyone's-ass boots you've ever owned (for only $95 on sale!) Their SALES are magic, so get yourself on that email list, and book it over as soon as they give the word.
I love wandering through the vintage stuff, but it's way too expensive for what it is. Although, I will say that the sixties vintage swimwear they've got right now is pretty rad. I hate overpriced vintage, though.
The BATHROOM. You need a "token". Unfortunately, only the manager has these "tokens." So, I asked one salesperson who directed me to the counter to acquire a token. That woman directed me to another man. That man said "hold on, I'll page the manager." The manager strolls up about 15 minutes later and says, "so who here has to go to the bathroom?" By that time I'd peed myself.
If nothing else, this place is fun to stroll through before or after you've had a delicious lunch at Cafe Midi next door. -

Okay I will admit I created a Yelp account just for those people over at American Rag. Beside selling overpriced vintage clothes you are blessed with a staff of fake too cook for school hipster with a stick up their a... But that's not even the worst. They have a way of making money on you that drives me NUTS.
You pull in their lot and before you even get out of your car this miserable trained guy punch the card and give it to you when you pass him. You have 1hr and 30 min free. Twice I spend over $2000 and twice I got caught into a heated argument. I came out and they're pretending that I over stayed by 2 minutes... yeh we're talking 120 seconds so they're asking me for $6 for 120 seconds....
Twice after spending over 2grand there I went back inside to talk to the tattoed to cool for school associates and twice they told me that "they couldn't do anything" So American Rag you screw me of $6 for 2 min of parking twice after I spend over $2000...
This store is a JOKE.... Everything in there you can find at Barneys or Bloomindales or even online for WAY CHEAPER.
American Rage Cie love to abuse their customers trust and I was dumb enough to pay the price twice.
WARNING RIPP OFF STORE WITH RUDE EMPLOYEES AND PARKING TRICKS BROOKLYN STYLE. DONT GET FOOLED. -

I stopped by American Rag two weeks ago for the first time. Initially I started looking at the new stuff that's at the front of the store, and to my dismay, the prices were out of control. $250 for a teeny bikini top...yikes! As I was starting to think I came into the wrong place, I noticed the sign at the back that pointed to the vintage section.
Thinking that this was also in vain judging by the prices up front, I was notified by one of the friendly sales reps that most of the vintage section was 40% off.
So I started going through the dresses, and I couldn't believe how reasonably priced everything was...then for it to be 40% off is even better! I grabbed about 7 dresses and made my way to the dressing room. Unfortunately they have an annoying policy that only allows you to try on 2 things at a time, but luckily I had a friend with me that swapped my items out.
I narrowed my selection down to 3 things, but I couldn't justify buying all 3, so I got down to 2. I found a FABULOUS 60s teal dress with brass buttons that looks like it came out of Jacky Kennedy's closet, and an awesome 50s pistachio colored swing dress...and, wait for it...both dresses were $35 a piece! If we had more time, I could have easily spent a couple more hours in there.
They also have this huge glass bowl full of vintage chiffon/nylon scarves for only $5 a piece. So, of course I had to load up on a few before I could leave.
I was pleasantly surprised that the vintage section was not picked over, considering it's location; but I'm giving American Rag 4 stars because the new stuff is super expensive, and the parking situation leaves something to be desired (I know it's LA, but still!). I will definitely make this a regular stop when I make the trek from OC. -

I do love coming here to see the occasional celeb sightings and for their vintage selection. It takes time to look through but most times its well worth it as you can find an awesome gem among the mix. The other items are a bit too pricey for me. Like, immensely so. The denim bar is pretty awesome but I shop at warehouse sales held by the designers for jeans and basically buy my jeans elsewhere. I just come here to check out the selection and see what to look for at those sales. I know they frown upon that but oh well, haha.
Their shoe selection for women has gone to the dogs :( Such a shame since they used to have amazing brands that were difficult to find with amazing styles but now it's the same bland stuff I can find elsewhere at a much ballooned price so whatevs. -

I absolutely loved going to the American Rag in SF while I was living up there but it closed down so I was super sad. Since I was gonna be in LA for the day, I decided to check this place out again. I've been to this location before but I wanted to see if anything changed and wanted to see if I could find some cool stuff to purchase.
I was really excited to come here but sadly I didn't really find anything I wanted which was weird because I usually never leave American Rag empty handed ): Everything was uber expensive, even the vintage clothes. The AR in SF had a better selection and was way cheaper than the goods in LA. Not sure why but hey, that's LA for ya.
I asked one of the workers to help me with finding an item. She told me to hold on because she was with another customer but that beez never came back. Then I saw her on the register. WTF. So I left. Pretty horrible customer service. I would give this place 4 stars but snobs don't win me over with the shit they pull. Get a clue and learn a thing or two about "customer service". -

This place sets the bar for a denim department! I'd give their denim bar alone 5 stars...
Tony the Tiger would yell @ the shoes they stock because They're GR-R-Reat! At times they stock "prototype" shoes.
American Rag Cie is another one of those stores where leaving empty handed is nearly more impossible than Tom Cruise's missions. -

I like this place. They really have some good stuff!!
The reason I'm giving this place four stars is because I think they need more staff in their shop.
But overall, I like this place and yeah, I AM a fan!

It's big. It's hipster. It's got a ton of clothes. But the PRICES ARE AWFUL. I can get the same clothing in a different store for half the price that is at American Rag. It's too bad their prices are so inflated because they do really have a great selection of things.
But if i were to spend money like that, I would go buy the SAME thing else where. -
Review from Suzanne M.
This place is a fashion wonderland where you can find select pieces from top designers (for women) like Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs, other hip and exclusive yet more obscure designers, more pedestrian articles from American Vintage, James Pearse and, more recently and suprisingly, Quicksilver. Behind the very pricey designer sections at the front of the store is the back-of-the store mint condition vintage sections (women & men). And on the sides and in between you can find purses old and new, ties, belts, scarves, jewelry (old and new), hats (ditto) at a range of prices. There's also a very cool shoe section for both men and women. And there's a new jewelry case at the front of the store by the registers. Then, there's the World Denim adjunct where you can also quickly lose your mind looking for that new jean style you must have. There are so many options here; you will most likely find what you are looking for and more. And if the pocketbook allows....
And really, for me, that is the only painful thing about this store. It Is Expensive. However, if you like the hunt, if you are a shopper, you will find things.... They also do have some great seasonal sales.
The buyers for the store have their targets clearly profiled: uber-hip, privileged, chic, slightly daring, worldly, funky, rockers, the young and young at heart. So, it's just fun to check out everything that's made for the beautiful people, even if it's stuff you can't really afford. I like to get ideas there. I have splurged (and it felt good) on occasion, but I try on and take home more from the vintage section. And, yes, maybe it's a little high for vintage, but the quality and fit are good, the designs are original and cool. Sometimes gorgeous. I love the accessories, as well: old and new. I usually don't leave the store empty handed, even if my purchase was just a unique-colored nail polish. -
Review from Karen T.
I came out triumphant this last weekend with an amazing silk Navajo print button up and a Vivienne Westwood pink chambray shirt, both for 100 bones total (if bought originally priced, they would have run me about 400). Their sales can be amazing, as I have just proven here.
The store always has stuff to look at, but not necessarily purchase since without the sale, everything runs pretty pricey. The mark up on their vintage selections ranges from semi fair to overpriced. I once bought a homemade sixties summer crop top for $30 that I thought was too much, but because I picked it up and put it down about five different times, I figured that had to mean something. I've worn it several times now, making it a pretty worthwhile buy.
You can find a lot of hidden and tucked away gems here, so it's always worth going for a look, sale or not. The shoe selection is good as well, featuring a lot of your "indie darling" designers like Rachel Comey and F-Troupe. One of the few places I like to come to "window shop", because anyone that knows me, understands my disdain for retail shopping. Staff is nice and helpful, although sometimes hard to track down since it seems they're always running around. Anyway, thanks American Rag for helping me to get out of the house once in awhile. -

I love American Rag to start off with, and frequent the one at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. The one in LA is very large. Bought some Nudie jeans from the World Denim Bar. Huge selection of jeans. Saw too many shoes that i wanted ...need to come back with more money in my pocket next time!

This is one of those hybrid new/vintage stores, where the new stuff is incredibly expensive and the old stuff is slightly-more-expensive-than-it-would-be-at-a-real -thrift-shop. Yeah, this is one of those places that raids the other vintage shops of their best gear and resells it at a premium. Kind of a drag, but what can you do?
I will say the gear here is usually pretty fresh. Shoes are pretty cool. Jeans range from the simplest (Levi's 501) to the schlockiest garbage that you'd see meatheads on a reality show wearing to nightclubs that were hip with B-List celebs like two years ago. -

Awwwhh, definitely missing my American Rag Cie now that I'm up North :( This place is a goldmine for scores and while it definitely falls in the hit or miss category, my friends and I have cleaned up on designer duds here! Especially in the accessories department. We're talkin rad necklaces, belts and purses....seriously, my purse closet calls many of its members family because of this store.
My advice, hit it once a month at least. They get new stuff all the time and the buyers have great eyes and trend spotting abilities and while it's no $5-$10 store, you will also find unique pieces that will get you attention and compliments. And who doesn't love that! ;)Listed in: My Perfect Day In LA!!

American rag is like Barney's co-op but on La Brea and much more hipster.
Large store, men's & women's clothes, shoes, accessories, and now they have a "denim bar" which is a fancy name for a section in the store that carries 15-20 diff brands of denim. Their vintage section is cute but definitely overpriced.
and for you small girls out there, this place has small sizes in denim! yes!
their shoe selection used to be better, now its just ok. recently they had these really cute pair of ballet flats from a company called Joto, but didn't have my size :( depsite everyone's ranting about the store staff, the times that I have been there, the staff has been helpful, if you ask them to help you. Some are friendly too.
the only bad thing is the service at the cafe next door. they are the real biatches. -

While I couldn't find anything for myself, I found lots of Stussy shirts for my boyfriend for only $20 each! What a BARGAIN! :D
Here you'll find vintage clothes, shoes, lingerie, & etc. There's a huge selection of clothes, but be prepared to look over racks & racks of clothes. -

You won't find mall clothes in here! It's unique clothing that is expensive, but worth getting if you can afford it. Blending rockstar celebrity style with vintage clothing and totally amazing shoes, you can probably spend an afternoon looking at everything.
I mainly came in to see the vintage stuff, but most items looked too costumey. The prices for vintage aren't as expensive as you would think. Also saw some great Linea Pelle handbags and clutches and of course some more unique and stylish jewelry.
I probably wouldn't come in here on the regular, but it's worth checking out. Especially if you're a tourist or more importantly, if you're rich. -

The Good: My bf is 6'5'' so buying denim is a real task. This place had an amazing selection and was the first to offer jeans longer than an 34" inseam. I really wanted to get him a pair for xmas so I found an awesome pair, in his size - yay!
The Bad: Their return policy is pretty crappy. 7 days for a store credit. Considering I live in Canada and only come to LA every 6 weeks, this doesn't work for me. I waited over 20 minutes to talk to the manager who was really nice but not willing to bend the rules to help me out.
The Compromise: She found a loop hole: if I purchased the jeans during Thanksgiving, I would have up until January 'something' to return them.
The Nail in the Coffin: "Perfect! Hold the jeans for me til Friday and I will get them then! "
"No, we don,t hold stuff"
So I offer to PAY for them Now and leave them there until Friday so they can process the order then. No can do. - WTF?
The Decision: I get the f#*king jeans anyway so I don't go home empty handed and I hope to god they fit because who else wears such a large size of pants!?!
I love/hate this store. Great stuff - silly rules. -

I've been to this store a few times and have always thought their selection of clothing, both new and vintage, as well as jewelry and shoes, was inspired and interesting (and sometimes expensive.) The only purchase I have ever made in the apparel store was a beautiful pair of hoop earrings with a small turquoise flower in the center. Unfortunately, I lost one of them. By the time this happened, American Rag no longer carried the earrings- they tried to call the independent manufacturer, but couldn't get a replacement pair. This was disappointing, but since they deal with specialty designers, I didn't hold it against them for having limited stock.
Well, imagine my surprise when today, probably 6 months later, I get a call from Sarah, the assistant manager, telling me that one of her people ordered me the earring and she has it there for me (to be fair, the person forgot to call me but whatever.) Anyway, I am overjoyed that I will soon be reunited with the earring and that these people went above and beyond to get me another pair (the earrings themselves weren't even that expensive, so it's not like they're making some huge profit.) -

Love this place. I love that they have vintage clothes right next to designer pieces and incorporate music as part of their brand. They have an insane denim location and I wouldn't consider shopping for denim anywhere else, after my experience here. The staff is so helpful and knowledgeable, but so cool that I could hang out with them all afternoon. Such a nice break from some of the other shops in LA. No added attitude. Just great clothes.

Style. If you want to spend a couple hundo on shirts (dress shirts, french cuffs) this is the spot. I would take this over Thomas Pink or A|X any day and for any occasion.
The place itself is clean, fashion nicely laid out, with music to shop to playing in the background. I could spend 500$ without even thinking, that is why I am careful not to go back...until the fall.
Urban Outfitters and Hugo Boss Chavez had a baby off La Brea and called him American Rag Cie. -

Terrible customer service. Friendly staff but mixed up my orders twice and haven't returned a call despite repeated inquiries into the ordered products. One was a year ago and one is still ongoing. Sort of unbelievable that such a nice store has so many customer issues.

This place and Barneys Co-Op are my favorite places to shop because 80 percent of the items they have here are really impressive. I really like how they have lesser known designers next to the items that I am looking for.
The service is really hit or miss, but I always have had someone who gave me good service and real opinions. I appreciate that and it shows through my purchases. It is really hard to leave this store with spending less than 300 bucks. (Which isn't saying much...half the store are items with 300+ dollar price tags...) -

This is always a fun place to look around in. I've never bought anything here until yesterday and the dressing room situation turns me off a little. You can only take two items in at a time plus one of the rooms has an 'ass' camera. There is really no purpose to it at all. I think I can get a clear picture of how everything looks with a mirror. However, I really like the vibe of this place and would come back again.

This ain't about a specific business, but about the clothing company itself.... American Rag is the only "juniors" jeans company where the term "short" truly means short!!! For Christ sake...there are people on this planet who enjoy wearing jeans and would like to walk out a store not wondering how many meters they need to shorten them by!!!
Thank you American Rag. Your jeans fit wooooonnnnderfully!!! -

My review is about the Jean bar. Not that I have ever bought a pair of jeans here (they never have my size 34) but I was amazed at the talent of one sales person, Erika. I had a friend in town from Australia and she said she wanted a pair of jeans so I took her to the Jean Bar.
We insisted on helping our selves and scoffed when beautiful slim Erika kept butting into our conversations about my friends jeans size. My gurl tried on several pairs of jeans and we were about to leave when Erika said you are not a 30 you are a 28. Words from Yoda. My friend tried on the 28 and was converted. Erika oh wise one you made my best friends visit to LA. You are better than Jenny Craig and I give you 5 stars but the Jean Bar 3 because they don't cater for woman with fat arses. -
Review from Alli J.
Easily one of my favorite stores in L.A (well, and SF). I love that they have women's, men's, shoes, jewelry, AND vintage (they also sell DVDs and CDs but I've never purchased any).
The staff here is really hit or miss. Some of the people seem to be really friendly and the others are just plain rude so it's like a crap shoot. Generally, you have to go up to someone to have them start you a room, but the store IS really big, so I'll cut them some slack. I won't, however, cut them some slack on the TWO ITEMS at a time in the dressing room rule. TWO? Are you freaking kidding me? I have perfected this completely ridiculous half-naked head poke slash reach over arm maneuver so that I can try on all of the clothes without having to put my original outfit back on, just to step outside and do a swap. It's ludicrous! I understand that they don't want people to shoplift but come on. Two is not enough. It just isn't.
Lately I feel like the women's shoe collection has been crappy, but every once in a while they have some cute shoes. The vintage can be pretty overpriced, but it's still a pretty good selection.
I love that they carry overseas designers that are hard to find in LA, ie. A.P.C (french), Vanessa Bruno (french), Alice McCall (Australian), Camilla & Marc (Australian) but they also have popular US designers like Marc by Marc Jacobs and Splendid. They also have a fantastic denim selection. -

I used to be a heavy drinker until I hit up your denim bar. Now, I only consume jeans, jeans, jeans. What have you done to me, what have you done?
And my wallet feels lighter than it should whenever I walk out, even when I haven't bought anything! Thirty less days of having a roof over my head because sometimes, on a good day when I am composed and practice self-control, I leave with a bag in each hand, the total estimate of damage equivalent to a month's rent. At least I will look good while soliciting people for nickels and cigarettes.
You're like a Spaniard, an Italian or any swarthy guy with a killer accent: aesthetically pleasing, enticing scent, sex appeal, looks good on me, feels even better, and oh, la pasion! I melt, but at the same time, I know you are BAD for me.
You're toxic.
I love you. -

American Rag gets 5 stars today because their 75% off (select items)sale is going on right now. I came out with $1000+ worth of clothes for $200 something. My wallet and I are happy.

Pretty good stuff here, and every now and then you can score a pretty sweet deal! The vintage stuff is ridiculously overpriced...stay away. If its vintage you're looking for, stick to Jet Rag a few blocks up La Brea.
The staff is very helpful and attentive...kudos to them.

Jeans, jeans, and more jeans. OH MY! Love the selection of all the clothes and accessories at American Rag Cie. I go there especially for their selection of jeans tho. They tend to carry some of the more less-known (for now) brands while still stocked with what's hot now.
The sales are amazing and one can score fantastic finds at up to 40-50%. Don't expect to find all big names. So, try one of the lesser knowns - be a trend setter!Listed in: Lux

I can always find something cute from a cool slash interesting designer in here- but why? There are so many better boutiques (half of Third Street, Madison, a couple places in Silverlake, even Spirituali) with less attitude, better editing, no headache-inducing, overpriced vintage section, and no ridiculous parking policy (you only get validated if you buy something).
I like the Maison shop and the cafe but that's a different review. -

Pretty good selection of jeans. I wandered in just after having bought some at Barney's, so I wasn't buying, but I was impressed nonetheless. The staff are helpful/knowledgable if you flag one down to ask questions; they also aren't harassing you with constant "can I help you"s every time they see you. I sort of prefer it that way but judging from the other reviews, some people prefer more active staff.
Anyways next time I'm in the market for 100$+ jeans, I'll come here. -
Review from Julene H.

I want to like this store because of their abundance of fun clothing and shoe options. However, I don't want to like the fitting room attendants that hand me "flattery" sizing. Sorry sweetheart, but I am definitely not a 27 and arguing with me about it won't change the reality of the situation.
I will say that the guy that handles denim repair is on top of his game. I had a pair of jeans rip through the inner thigh (due to a sweet dance move) and though you could see it had been sewn together the jeans were definitely still wearable... until I ripped the leg seam on the other side, too.
Vintage stuff was super lame the last few times I went through. Your buyer could use either a crash-course in what qualifies as a "good vintage find" as opposed to "something so obscure and ugly some moron will surely buy it."
Definitely my go-to when I feel like wasting several hundred dollars on pants but otherwise I'll stick to Nordstom Rack instead.
