Maybe the best sandwich I have ever had. I had the salty pig... its brie cheese, ham, and french butter served on a fresh roll.... WOW, they put in CHUNKS of high quality brie, and the ham is perfect. 9$ for a top quality sandwich, or I could walk across the street to a pub and spend 12 on a crappy one..... decisions decisions.....
And they are super nice and give away free samples. -

My wife and I visited American Provisions for the 1st time today, on our way to M St. Beach. We thought why not give them a shot and grab some sandwiches for the beach?
Upon our arrival, neither one of the 2 employees acknowledged my wife or I.
Even more upsetting we were the only customers in the shop.
The female employee then took a phone call, and the male employee took our order, but rather than preparing our 2 sandwiches right away, he passed the responsibility onto the female employee, who was still on the phone. 5 minutes later, no sandwiches. 10 minutes later, still no sandwiches. Finally 15 minutes later, we were given our 2 sandwiches. Again we were the only 2 customers in the shop.
I can only imagine how nightmarish it may be if they were to get a rush of customers.
I ordered their "Grilled Pig" sandwich, which consists of ham and brie.
Once in my possession, I was incredibly disappointed to see that there was only 2 VERY thin slices of ham, on a tiny baguette, that cost $8.00!
It would be one thing if the sandwiches and service compensated for their high priced provisions, but the fact of the matter is that both employees felt they were too cool to do their job. Considering their location and the demographic of Southie, they do not have the luxury of acting as if they above their clients.
Needless to say, we will never visit this business again and will firmly advise our friends and clients to steer away from American Provisions. -

Awesome!
Staff is very eager to help, friendly and knowledgable.
Cured meats are great - Finnochiona is my personal favorite here.
Haven't tried the sandwiches yet on my to do. Really great find for Southie. -

A real Southie treat!!! Great local artisan foods from around the greater New England. Cheeses, salsa, meets, juices, pesto sauce, chocolates, chips; they have it all. The store is beautiful and really well put together. The staff and owners are very knowledgeable, proactive, and polite. The sandwiches are great too.
Place is very expensive thought so tread lightly. -

It's really not my thing.... because I am cheap. Nonetheless I do like the place and have purchased steak tips or pasta here and there.
I wish they served fresh sandwiches. If they made a really good rueben or rachael I would be their best customer and grant them at least 4 stars. -

I am updating my previous entry for American Provisions. I stopped in again today and the experience was 100% better. I also received a personal email from the Owner (in response to by previous rating offering an apology). They carry a great selection of cheese, olives and specialty groceries. True, some things are pricey, but good things cost $$$.
I encourage anyone in Southie to stop in and get your fix of Cabot Cloth VT Cheddar, fine chocolate, organic meats, the list goes on and on.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Excellent high end grocer, as advertised. They carry a lot of locally made goods, such as pasta sauces, breads, cheeses etc.
NOT the place to do your everyday shopping. You go to American Provisions when you feel like spending some money on yourself, like any given Friday! -

I just stumbled on this place this afternoon. I was driving down Broadway lamenting that there weren't any decent specialty food markets near my place in Dorchester. Then all of a sudden I saw cured meats hanging in a window and I stopped short and got lucky w/a parking space.
One of the salespeople, Kerry, greeted me and offered me a taste of any of the cheeses and told me a little about the store. She was lovely and very helpful. I ended up grabbing one of the last loaves of bread, which is amazing, some cheese which was delicious and some fruit.
They have an amazing selection of cheese and cured meats as well as some produce, fresh pasta, frozen items, etc. They also make sandwiches which I'll have to try next time. All they need now is wine and beer and my quality of life will improve immensely! -

American Provisions has forever changed my life. Local shop offering meats, produce, specialty/gourmet groceries, and fantastic and diverse selection of cheeses and cured meats. The best part is the staff - you walk in and they chat with you to get a taste for your style, and recommend the best things. ever. And tell you how to cook/prepare anything to make your meal come together! There's always a fresh fish on fridays, the owner goes and picks it up in the cape early am - you never know what it will be, but it's always the freshest and tastiest!
I can't leave out my favorite item, the steak tips. When I say I'm not kidding about these bad boys, I'm not kidding. They are the most tender, flavorful and melt in your mouth tips EVER. no marinade even needed, holy moley! 1 lb package is about 15 bucks, but best 15 bucks you can spend.
I walk in to provisions with an open mind, and always come out with a special, fresh meal and lots of tasty treats to go with! Best service, best products hands down. Oh - they also have sandwiches that are to die for! -

Just stumbled upon this cozy shop a few days ago. The staff was extremely personable (Matt), and actively encouraged me to sample different cheeses and meats. As different customers walked in, they were often greeted by name, which just goes to show how good the customer service/products must be if people are regularly coming back. It felt local in the best of ways.
My new favorite champagne-taste-on-a-beer budget meal is a picnic. I bought an apple, a small bit of cheese, some delightfully paper thin slices of procuitto, some olives and a cup of tea. All told, it cost about 8 dollars. I then walked over to the beach and ate an amazing meal while looking out at the sea, thanking my lucky stars for having discovered American Provisions. -

I love, love, love this place! Tons of gourmet goodies!!! Is it a little pricey? Yes. Do you know EXACTLY where the extra money went? YES, YES, YES!!!!!
Got some really wonderful cheese and outstanding caramel salt ice cream! Can't wait to go back and try more - everything looked AMAZING. (The fact that the counter guy is friendly and not hard on the eyes is also a bonus). -

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Gourmet shop with cheeses, breads, meats, and other provisions. Deli made sandwiches on the spot. Coffee brewed fresh is a plus.

Nice store. Lots of specialty items including meats and cheeses. The prices are ridiculous though. I saw an $8 loaf of bread here once! Crazy! It seems like a nice place to buy someone a gift certificate or to buy and bring a nice food item to someones house. I can't imagine doing your regular shopping here. So if you feel like indulging then this place is worth a look.

So, my GF raves about this place and for many items, I agree. However, she recently bought some frozen mac and cheese named something like the "world's best mac and cheese". It wasn't. It wasn't even close. It was frozen mac and cheese. Nothing more, nothing less. Oh, guess how much this relatively small box of frozen mac and cheese cost? Guess. How about $16. She didn't realize it until she got home and never would have bought this in the first place had she noticed the price.
IMHO, just a another South End wannabe store that thinks it can charge ridiculous (aka South End) prices for everyday items. I think people shop here under the "if it cost more, it must be better" rule. Don't be fooled. -

I am so so so happy that this place opened up in my neighborhood. This gem of a specialty shop has a wide array of baked goods, cheese and meats as well as tons of vinegars, itallian specialties, spreads and marinades. They have a great selection of olive oil, and even sell from a giant drum that you can refill from. I'm looking forward to stopping in and trying many of their items.
Today I left with basil and roasted walnut cheese spread, a loaf of bread (1/2 price because it was a day old) and an individual chicken pot pie for $10.Listed in: My Neighborhood- Southie

Love this place. It will only be better when (hopefully!) they are granted a license to sell beer and wine.
Cheese is top knotch, cured meats are great, and everyone here is always so nice when you come in. Awesome addition to the area. -

Very cool little spot in Southie, exactly what the neighborhood needs more of. The fresh foods looked very cool, lots of interesting options. I went with the Italian sandwich, which was among the best I've ever had. I work from home, so this place is gonig to come in very handy when I need to get out of the house.

Southie is becoming more gentrified by the month for good or bad, it is happening. American Provisions is the latest and greatest of new places, and thankfully it is not a nail salon or tanning spa. Instead, American Provisions gives you a reason again to "live" in Southie. Fine provisions with style and taste is what they offer. An abundance of cheese, a sampling of olive oil, and cured meats are just a part of what they offer; and it is a reason not to have to head to the North or South End when you want to take your meal or entertaining up a few notches. The staff is friendly and helpful, listening to their clientèle and trying to step up life on the corner of E. Broadway. The only downfall is I can't leave there without purchasing a few items, which, by the way, is the equivalent to the cost of a few rounds at Tom English's for a party of four.

Brock C are you the owner or friend of the owner? I live right there and tried to go in after reading your review and they aren't open yet. Their windows are still all covered up and they are still doing work on the inside it appears. When will the store actually have their grand opening? So that we can try this amazing selection of meat and cheeses and great coffee that you speak of?

I love the knowledgeable staff at American Provisions. They'll let you sample meats and cheeses before you buy, which is always welcome. It is a perfect place to stop into if you are entertaining and want some interesting and delicious options. They've always given good recommendations to pair appetizers with what we'll be drinking (which is really the best part!). Stinky cheeses, organic meats, artisan breads, farm fresh eggs and veggies - they got them. I've had some great frozen goods - sweet potato gnocchi, lobster ravioli that have been above average.
I am willing to pay for quality, it if is up to par, and American Provisions is worth it, especially given the lack of options in Southie. One random note: they have brands, like Stonewall Farms, that don't really go with the "specialty store" vibe - you can get them at places like Target for a lot less money. -

This place is great! Organic and nitrate free! Everyone that works there is very friendly. I came from boot camp (obviously a huge workout makes me crave cheese) and they let me try so many cheeses, helped me pick out ones I would like. Also got delicious sun-dried tomato pesto. Can't wait to go back and try more goodies! So glad to find this gem in Southie!!

The store is clean and neat with a sparse selection of specialty food items. The shelves didn't appear fully stocked. There was a single container of quail eggs along side a wide range of cheeses in a deli case. The Stop&Shop supermarket 2 blocks away carries food staples while American Provisions seems to carry higher end (price and quality) items.

If you are a yo-pros (formerly known as yuppies) in Southie, this is what you've been waiting for. A nice selection of local cheeses, organic meats, frozen locally made pot pies, gourmet chocolate, and so much more. It's worth a visit!

Stopped in a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised with selection of specialty meats, cheeses, jams, pastas, etc. Focus is from Farm to Table as they feature local/new england products. Owners said more selections coming, including local bakery items which would be a welcome addition. Overall, excellent boutique purveyor of finer foods. I'm on an apricot/fig preserve with Stilton cheese toast kick that is out of this world...

Always a pleasure to come in. coffee is fantastic, with the best cuts of meat I've found since coming back to Boston. Staff is helpful and very friendly, selection is widening as they come closer to the "official Grand opening". Highly suggest for the discerning Foodie.

This place makes me happy. Seriously happy. I've bought cheeses and cured meats several times for gifts and small gatherings - the proscuitto literally melts in your mouth. These guys know what they're doing and they don't cut corners. But today, I decided to take a chance on the Italian sandwich. I know, I sound dramatic, but I don't often order an Italian when I'm out because too many times I've been disappointed. But here, today, it was spectacular. It was probably the most perfect sandwich I've ever had - right down to the teeniest tiniest bit of red onion. Ingredients were right on - and props to the guy who made it. Don't change it. Ever.

Amazing store with products you can't find anywhere. Save yourself a drive to the North end, American Provisions diverse selection of cheeses and meats are very fresh and competitively priced. The only thing better than the selection is the staff which is always friendly and helpful. If only they had a beer and wine license...

Amazing!!! This place is very clean, the set up, the decor... and Matt (one of the owner's) was so welcoming and nice. The selection of quality meat, cheeses, jams, and other items is extensive. Everything seemed like it was carefully selected. You can definitely stop by to grab a few things as part of your weekly grocery trip, Whole Foods style (which I love!) or just stop by to for cheese and crackers to entertain at home. We will be regulars here!

They have the BEST pancetta. I almost don't want to tell you how great it is because I worry that there will be none left for me. Melt in your mouth artisan pig. So yum. They are also really friendly and don't make fun of you when you accidentally mispronounce pancetta. I'll be back to get some stonewall stuff. (And more panchetta of course)

Love, love love. Their meat selection, while limited, is excellent and they will order any cut of meat for you - takes a few days to come in. We love the local products and friendly staff. By the way, I totally disagree about the worlds best mac and cheese - it think its pretty yummy. Expensive, but still good. Also try the frozen whoopie pies - the chocolate chip ones are fantastic.

Wow. I'm impressed. Others have already said it but it can't be stated more concisely: A gem of a food specialty store and well worth the trip out of our South End neighborhood. It's surprisingly packed with foodie delights, given its intimate size, and is filled with tons of local "farm-to-table" items (everything from garden specialties (like local sweet potatoes) to specialty local sausages and cured meats, freshly made pastas, mustards, ice cream (ginger ice cream!)... The cheese counter rivals the famed and loved South End Formaggio (with the helpful and knowledgeable staff to match). A lovely array of THE best meats Boston has to offer (Kinnealey's - not available at any grocers in my neck of the woods). I was so engrossed in the aforementioned that I didn't even see the baked goods others spoke of - will have to return soon! It's a pleasure to stroll around - very well-designed in an upscale country rustic style. Don't pass this great little place by. We'll definitely be back.
