I love this store.  I visit the store primarily for their lunch boxes--I collect them.  I have several of them from this store--a Speed Racer box, a Rosie the Riveter box, and a custom-made box featuring the cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show by M W. Bradshaw. I purchased a box a couple of years ago that turned up in the movie Juno.  In her bedroom!

I've also purchased other items designed by Bradshaw--a great Voodoo/Skull drum and a skull spider.  His stuff is great!

Love the retro shows shown on the store television as well as the retro commercials.

The store is always on my list to visit when shopping in my town--Ferndale!

The kings or queens, as it were, of kitsch.
I could easily spend hours in American Pop scanning the shelves. It is packed to the brim with new and used American pop culture trinkets, antiques and memorabilia.  It is king of like stepping into a Tim Burton/John Waters daydream. Everything from candy to doll heads, to old playboys.  When I walked in they were playing old episodes of Pee Wee's Playhouse, which I found very fitting for the store.  The prices are actually very good.

They also have a really cute pit bull rescue mascot who hangs out behind the cash register.

    I'll definitely be returning.

I seem to find this type of store in every city i live in, and i love all of them!

i spent about an hour in the store on a lazy sunday afternoon, it was so fun. you can circle the store a few times and still miss half of what's on the shelves. totally eclectic, a lot of vintage finds ... you have to go with someone else so you can scream nostalgic sap at each other over the piles of toys and such!

on my visit items purchased were: a car model kit from the 60's that was in great condition for $25, a tin rooster toy, a vintage pink ashtray, a mid-century magazine rack and a really really cool vintage mid-century lamp.

the owner was great - not overbearing but helpful and the prices were very reasonable, i will be visiting often!

American Pop is interesting as a museum to pop culture or as an expensive garage sale, but this store doesn't have anything I want to purchase.  I've been here several times and it has some nice stuff but it all seemed pretty expensive.

American Pop has shelves and shelves of nostalgia, kitsch and curios.  If you're looking for something from pop culture such as a toy, then you should look here first.  There are also books and records and games.

I finally got to check this store out.  I love vintage memorabilia and this store had lots of it!   At first glance I could see the counter full of old candy as well as tin lunch boxes, old toys and action figures on the shelves.  The lay out of the store is kind of like a cluttered attic with a lil' bit of everything, and it has a basement full of more hidden gems.
I spotted a shelf with old Kodak film cameras, and one of them was only marked $4.00...not bad.  The basement is pretty cool too.  I mostly saw records and magazines which is exactly what I like to skim through.   I found issues of Life and Saturday Evening Post, but most of them were focused on Liz Taylor!  If you are a collector of particular items like records or comics then you would definitely want to look around this store.  If you like Liz Taylor then check out the basement!

    Oh my God!

This place makes Middle Earth in Ann Arbor look like a 1/2 Off Card Shop.

I've never seen such a random and motley collection of... things in one place ever, anywhere on the planet!

They live up to their name. They've seemed to have collected as much random "American Pop" items and shoved them in the tiniest space imaginable. Looking for flamingos? 45s? Hula dancer lamps? Ugly foot stools? It's all here.

I wouldn't be surprised if I could've found a Pee-Wee Herman doll and one of those wiggly sprinkers that had all the tubes that flailed all over. If Pee-Wee had one, why doesn't AP?

I don't really.. know why I could suggest AP to anyone, except that it's an experience for sure. They seem to have a revolving stock of used items, so I suspect it's an ever-evolving store of oddities. For this reason, go see it!

If nostalgia is your bag than American Pop is your store. This Ferndale shop is a find for any pop culture enthusiast. Located on 9 mile just off of Woodward in Ferndale's shopping district, if you're looking for a quirky and wistful gift this is the place to go.
Permeating with the scent of kettle corn, which owner Wyll Lewis, pops fresh in the store ,and shares with shoppers gives the sense that you're in some carnival of toys, with stacks of retro board games, figurines, books and cameras cluttering the shelf.

The store is always stocking new items so each time you step through the store's door it's like a brand new experience. In addition to toys and games, the store also stocks a small amount of vintage house wares and books. Lewis is never pushy and always grateful you've perused the period specific products in his store which makes for a much shopping experience.

First of all to "Joe D" whose comment about bed bugs in items etc.  I happen to know the landlord of that building that American Pop is housed in~he keeps his properties free and clear of such things. Secondly after talking to the owner of American Pop, he told me that he takes stuff on consignment. If by chance there was an issue of such an item which I would agree with him at this point~you would have told him right away.  Either by phone or in person if you had a situation like this occur.  Then he would have contacted his landlord to come spray again!  I tend to also agree that perhaps you have never been to his store or you would have been able to talk to him about the situation directly as American Pop every time I have been there has been about CUSTOMER SERVICE.  After a long talk to the owner of American Pop~I suspect you are one of a few that have been either been stopped from shopping at American Pop because of causing issues, stealing, or because you was turned down for other favors.

Secondly I find American Pop to be charming and a reminder to myself and others of a Time Not Forgotten.  I find just the fun things  that show up that reminds me of a better time in my life.  It is a history of our time Past of American and what it used to be and have for people.  I am fond of the tin toys that American Pop carries.  Brings back childhood memories as I had those types of toys   Yes, sometimes the dust is on the items but it comes free with the item and make the experience even more intriguing,  I am sorry to see it closing, it is like an end of an era to memories and to Ferndale.  I understand the owner is heading South and that American Pop will RISE again.
