Review from Andy H.
Brooklyn, NY
So I am 5 days away from a wedding for my wife's friend, and I try on my suit. Well either it shrunk a tad, or the old belly expanded a bit over this summer of yelping around Brooklyn's finest restaurants. Eh, I will go with the former and blame the dry cleaners.
In any event, I needed a new suit...and for cheap...but where could I get some nice duds, without breaking the bank? Oh yeah that's right, American Place!
My wife uses this place for all her shopping needs. She comes home with tons of shirts, or shoes, or shirts and shoes (because apparently you need to buy one to compliment the other) all the time.
The prices are so low and they have brand names like Ralph Lauren,Van Heusen,Michael Kors, Alfani and Macy's, just to name a few.
It has a main floor for all the woman's clothing, an entire section of shoes, that while scattered, look like some 70's game show, with women all running around with one shoe, looking for the matching one to complete the pair.
This time we headed directly down stairs, to the men's department. It has everything you need from casual to formal wear. I went over to check out the suits and they ranged from $74.25 to $185.00. Now with the $74.25 sets, the only issue was that the pants needed to be hemmed. But if you want to be sneaky, like yours truly, and save that time and avoid the headache of getting the pants measured and sewed by a friend or store, then just walk with the suit over to the pants section. They always have a matching pair of pants that go with the blazer.
So after an hour of playing clothing match game, I was set...grabbed a new tie for $5 and a new dress shirt for $9! Went to the cashier and it came out to $89.77!
People...we are talking designer suit...not some cheap crappy suit...for under $100 smackaroos.
I left happy, and will look sharp, at this Friday's wedding...and when my next outfit...uh shrinks...I will know where to go, for my next suit.
p.s.---they always have sales...I will be back in September to raid the fall clothing
If you are from Manhattan, take the F train to the Avenue P stop in Brooklyn. The store is directly below the elevated train tracks. Right across the street is their furniture and home center. Very cheaply priced goods for the home. Check both out, worth the 20-45 minute train ride, depending on where in the city you are coming from.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Very inconsistent in terms of pricing, selection, crowds... pretty much everything.
But when it's good, it's good. Dress shirts for $15? Sweaters for $10? Slacks for $12? Leather shoes for $35? Yes, please.
Oh, but those other times, nothing will be marked down that much, everything will be off-brand, and it'll be hot/smelly. The bathrooms on the first floor also suck.
So basically, come here if you need clothes on the cheap. But keep your expectations low and you might be pleasantly surprised! -

I live nearby and visit often. The best time to go is at the end of a season. In the last week I got a See by Chloe dress retail price $295, I paid $25, a Theory dress retail price $225, I paid $19, a bcbg dress retail price $196, I paid $19, I also got 3 designer t-shirts that would be over $50 each at Bloomies for $14 each, a cardigan retail price $78 for $14. It is very hit or miss, many times I leave empty handed. Many items are in poor condition. Customer service is non-existent. But it's all worth it when you do hit the jackpot.

A small chain of designer discount clothing stores, this branch is close to my home and one of the better ones. Their merchandise seems to be mostly post-season and/or overstock items from Bloomingdale's and Macy's. This branch has 3 levels. Top: women's shoes, coats. Main: women's clothing, accessories, fitting room. Lower: men's clothing, accessories, fitting room.
Pros: a fairly diverse selection of designer and not-so-designer clothes, dresses, coats, lingerie, bags, shoes, and accessories. Turnover is fairly high. Decent deals over original retail price (at least 25% and many over 50%), and sometimes fantastic deals can be found with some patience, low expectations, and do-it-yourself searching. Best times to go are when they have a store-wide discount on top of ticketed prices.
Cons: during busy hours especially, the place can be a complete mess. Good number of items are in poor condition, and would need repair to be wearable. Quantity per item is low (ie, just one of a particular item). Staff are disinterested and unhelpful. Three item limit for trying on clothes, although its easy enough to hang your extras outside and grab them. Air conditioning in the summer is woefully inadequate.
Wouldn't recommend coming if you're determined to buy a particular item or want a comfortable shopping experience, but if you're happy hunting for a good deal, this store may have them. -

To be honest, when you walk in, it's a bit of a madhouse. It reminds of me of Marshalls or Daffys. You have to have the patience and the want, otherwise you will probably walk out empty handed and with a full wallet. However, the prices are quite reasonable and if your looking for something decent that wont break the bank and does not require an hour long ride to either LI or Manhattan, this is the place.

I am often dressed head to toe in American Place goods...an entire outfit can cost under $60, shoes included. Yes, you have to weed thru the old, stained and ugly, but where lese can you come up with a Ralph Lauren cocktail dress marked down to $5, Cole Haan shoes for $29, etc. You can really look stylish for very little. My favorite store is at 13th Ave and 38th St. Some days you'll find zilch, other days you'll have hit it just right. If you are hungry after, visit the little Mexican Pandaria across the street and ask for the Pollo Mole Poblano; it's unbelievably good.

I haven't logged into Yelp for over a year and I wasn't interested in making a review either until NOW. Last weekend after shopping here I had a smile on the whole way home. I don't remember being this happy in a long time after shopping and I don't mean to sound materialistic either, because I'm not! But I'm addicted to American Place! I went home with a Via Spiga trench coat marked down to $25.00 from $ 90.00 which means its retail value had to be well over $100! I found a Bagley freakin' Mischka wool dress which retail price was $325 marked down to $25, a DKNY dress which retail price was $225 marked down to once again, you guessed it-- $25! (btw, after I saw the BM dress I had a bit of an orgasm) I also took home a few other cute things for very cheap. You have to dig a little but it is worth it! I'm taking a star off because the store itself can get a bit messy/unorganized and you can feel like you're shopping at a thrift store. Also some items are ruined and need mending. I'm going again either tomorrow or next weekend, because with prices like that I've turned into a shopaholic. ;)
