3 reviews for American Museum of Radio and Electricity
The American Museum of Radio and Electricity is another gem that helps elevate Bellingham above its college-town competition.
The museum is surprisingly large, with exhibits tracing the history and science of electricity, telegraphy, and wireless radio broadcast. The collection includes priceless examples of classic lab instruments, electric and electronic musical instruments, radios of all shapes and sizes, phonographs, music boxes, and much, much more.
The volunteer staff at the museum help take it to another level, with detailed knowledge and a willingness to give tours and provide explanations and demos of rare items. I've been present for demos of different types of phonographs, a hands-on demonstration of an early theremin, and a large-scale demo of static electricity and tesla coils.
The staff also actively restore and revive classic artifacts of the radio era.
The facility includes plenty of room for classes and music events, and a low-powered radio station (KMRE) that preserves classic recordings and radio broadcasts.

If you have any interest in the history of electricity and radio this museum is an absolute MUST. The treasures available for close inspection are just amazing and represent every era from Ben Franklin to about 1950. It's a treasure trove for both old and young visitors. The recently added amateur radio shack is a real attraction for Ham's living in or visiting Bellingham. A fully functional HF, UHF, VHF station available for any licensed ham to operate (W7MRE). And don't miss the studio of commercial radio station KMRE that is located on the premisis. The musem is open Wed-Sat 11:00-4:00. Admission is cheap.
this is a world class collection. radio- america's first electronic home entertainment. See the cutting edge equipment of an earlier time.
