Review from Nakita D.
Manhattan Beach, CA
I called these people as I heard from neighbors that they are very reliable and perform good quality work. I was not disappointed!
They came and we discussed installing Mul-T-Locks for my doors. They did the work quickly - job done in 2 1/2 hours - and I have to say I was very impressed with their product knowledge and the prices were extremely fair.
I felt very comfortable discussing the locks with them and would recommend them to anyone looking for new locks in their home! -

What a life saver. I lost my keys in Las Vegas. on the way back , i looked for a local locksmith on yelp. I called them. after i arrived home. American lock and Key was waiting for me . The opened my door and made me a spare keys ASAP. The guy was great and the prices are major fare.
The best part was that when i arrived home they made it before i got home. The whole time i was amazed at how fast they worked.
I was in my home and with a new set of keys in less than 1 hour! -

We called this company awhile back to do some work on an apartment building. First thing is they send out some guy who looks like he just got out of bed or maybe arrived directly from a camping and fishing trip. Then he was rude and pushy and instead of just fixing what we needed he kept trying to upsell us stuff we did not need and did not try to explain things as if talking was too much trouble. After he was finished I had to go back and clean the oily smudges he left on all the white doors. You would think he could at least have picked up a cloth and wiped things off. I also found some screws and little metal parts that I think came from the old locks in one of the planters near where he was working. I suppose taking those things to the trash can in the laundry room was too much trouble.
Based on the prices this company charges they are no bargain, but with this bad service they are not worth it at any price. We crossed them off the list and will never call them again. I cannot believe they had any good reviews on here with the unprofessional way this employee acted.Comment from May G. of American Lock & Key 3/8/2012

Rude counter guy wanted $5 to duplicate a car key even though the sign behind the counter says $3.95... very un-American.
Yes, they have the right to charge what they want, but I also have the right to rate them they way I want.Comment from May G. of American Lock & Key 4/13/2012

This was my 4th time using American Lock & Key and I have never had a problem with them. My house was broken into when I was away for vacation and the lock on the side door of my house was badly damaged. I called American Lock & Key and a locksmith came to replace my side door lock and he also checked my other door locks around the house. The locksmith ended up also replacing my front door lock to a much sturdier new and improved upgrade for a great price! I love that they provide 24 hour services. I would recommend them to anyone and will definitely use them again in the future!

WARNING:
According to the Better Business Bureau from May 2010, they have at least 14 complaints filed in the last 3 years. From the BBB website, their Contractors State License Board (#899440) Status is: Under Suspension.
The house call is $75 for them to come to your house. Doing any work at your house is extra. Also, they will try to upsell you to their next "better" product. [This observation is ironically independently validated by Danita A's review about getting an upgrade. Hope it's still worth it.] If you show reluctance, they will lower their "estimate" so it's definitely worth bargaining with them for everything. It's hard to know what the true price is.
The workmanship is questionable. They will freely charge you to re-key your doors without disclosing or evaluating your locks to see if they re-keying is even a good idea--sort of like putting old tires on a fancy car, just so that it'll drive a couple miles, then bust just when you are outside the 30-day warranty period. If you have any inkling that the key isn't working quite right, call them back immediately because they really don't take any responsibility after the 30-day period. When you do call them back, be ready for the sales pitch to buy a "state of the art" "top of the line" lock from them to replace whatever you didn't buy last time. -

HORRIBLE!! I was locked out of my apartment at 10pm on Friday. I called and a guy with a really thick accent answered with kids screaming in the background and he told me they wouldn't come out without my credit card number. I told him I wasn't comfortable giving that out over the phone, so he said fine and got my address. I waited 60 minutes overall (I called twice while I was waiting and the same guy told me the locksmith was close each time). When I finally got fed up and called to cancel, the guy said very smugly (no joke) "Remember when you said you wouldn't give me your credit card number? That's why I didn't send anyone out." He left a single woman sitting alone at night because he was annoyed that I wasn't comfortable giving information over the phone. I honestly was scared they were going to come break into my house after that because what kind of company behaves like that? I'm filing a formal complaint against them with the Better Business Bureau.

Great guys. I parked my car overnight down the block because I couldn't find parking closer to my friend's apartment, and the next morning, I find my driver's side keyhole all thrashed. It looked like someone took a screwdriver to it for a few minutes, probably trying to unlock it. American Lock and Key replaced the lock - affordable, professional, I recommend these guys 100%.

WARNING!!!!!!!
In response to a security concern, American Lock and Key responded to my address and consulted with me about access points to my property. The property had previously been keyed using Primus locks (which are advanced locks in which key duplication is difficult because of the ID card that is required to make copies and they are pick and bump-resistant). This aspect of security was a stated concern of mine at the time I met with Defendants.
In response to my concerns, they removed my Primus lock mechanisms and replaced them with inferior Schlage products (available at most home improvement stores with easily duplicable keys). Defendants advised me that the product was superior to Primus. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this representation was NOT true.
In addition, Defendants took from my possession the Primus locks (and interior mechanisms) that they removed from my doors. These locks were not traded or otherwise bardered for in exchange for the Schlage product they installed. Shortly after they completed the project, I discovered that the locks they provided me with; and the representations they made concerning the Schlage/Primus mechanisms,
were inferior and untrue.
As proof, I have the original invoices from the Primus locks and service; and I have the inferior Schlage materials they installed along with manufacturer specifications, details, pricing and comparisons.
Resolution Sought: I called (as did two witnesses) seeking return of Primus locks & their replacement; & asked they remove the inferior Schlage products they intended to charge me for. Defendants agreed to return & re-install my Primus locks. When later pressed to actually deliver the locks (& replace them as they had previously agreed to do), they refused & explained that they no longer had possession of the valuable Primus locks & mechanisms that they had agreed to return & replace, and complained about cost. They told me to f/o, hung up on me and a week later I was served with a small claims lawsuit asking to be paid for downgrading the locks in my home. I've filed numerous complaints with the appropriate boards and plan to file a counter complaint for the cost of restoring my locks to Primus. -

If I could give no stars I would. Check them out on-line with the Better Business Bureau - they have so many complaints filed against them, its amazing they're still in business. They don't write estimates - and if they do they are 5 times what you'd expect to pay. They'll try to scare you into thinking you need state of the art locks...like the kind they have on the Whitehouse and they they charge you $5000 for the job. Don't use this company what ever you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
