Wow! I can't believe that I was the last person to review this place.
Again, I stayed here for some NIH associated activities and again was granted my own room! It was great to have cable TV, two beds, and my own bathroom too. The wifi in the hotel isn't too bad either.
They also renovated the place, although the main lobby was mostly the same.
Breakfast had a fair range of options and was enjoyable.
Again a fun place to stay near all the hotspots in Bethesda1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Lisa S.
Last week, I needed a hotel room last-minute. Since I didn't have time to find one, I asked my mother to look into hotels in the area and book somewhere for me. She booked me at the American Inn at Bethesda, which was only a mile from where I needed to be- she also said she had trouble finding an available room. She booked through http://hotels.com, and it was $179 pre-tax, and $201 after taxes and fees.
I got to the hotel around 9pm, and I was confused about parking (there was nothing on their website, and no signs at the hotel). I pulled into the circle in front of the hotel, and saw that there was a small row of spots on the side. However, they looked full, and I was worried about driving down to check because it was very narrow and I wasn't sure if I could turn around. Cars were leaving the circle without parking, so I just assumed the spots were full. I left the crowded circle, pulled over on the street and called the front desk to ask about parking. The receptionist was confusing and almost acted like I was bothering her. She finally told me that there were 2 spots left in the lot. While I was talking to her, a homeless man came up and kept banging on my car window. Not a great start to the night.
I finally got parked in a tight spot in their covered lot (basically just 10 covered spaces next to the hotel) and checked in. Apparently, I was in a special block of rooms that were on the 2nd floor, but weren't inside- they opened up to an outdoor hallway above the pool. There was no elevator, so one of the employees had to help me carry up my suitcase. The room was nice enough, but I was a little uncomfortable with my room and windows opening to the outside, plus it felt remote (I didn't see or hear anyone else in that section of the hotel the entire time), and probably wouldn't have booked the room if I had known. The room itself was okay. I couldn't find a way to control the temperature, and everything seemed kind of run-down. There was almost no water pressure in the shower, and there was no room service. There wasn't even an information book in my room, so I had no idea what time the free breakfast was, or what amenities the hotel offered. But the room had all the basics, which was all I honestly needed... and the free wi-fi was the highlight of my stay. I hadn't had dinner, so I left to find some food- there was a Mexican restaurant downstairs that was mediocre at best. But luckily, it was open at 9:30pm. When I walked back to my hotel room, I didn't even see another person.
I never really had a sense of hospitality or security while staying there. I woke up early and checked out, and the woman behind the desk again was borderline unwelcoming. Overall, my stay was forgettable and really not worth the $200 I paid for it. -

I agree that the price and location (near metro stop and NIH) are good, but what horrible service! When making the reservation, we requested a crib. Called a month before to reconfirm, then called again a week prior to our arrival to confirm again. Checked in, got to the room, no crib. No mention of this at check in. Called downstairs and was told, "sorry, we couldn't find the crib." Apparently, they had looked for the crib and couldn't find it, so they just decided we didn't need one. We checked in at 1 am after a long flight from California, and no place for our baby to sleep. They should have bought one earlier in the day when the stores were open. A Pack and play would have been just fine. I understand that they don't usually get families, but we confirmed twice and they informed us that they will have a crib for us.
Then there's housekeeping. We had the "privacy please" sign up and we got a phone call asking us when we were going out of the room. We have the sign up because we didn't want to be bothered. Calling us is bothering us!
The rooms are small and the bathroom is very small. Not much parking either. Breakfast is included, which is nice. -

The prices here are good, but the service and amenities are not. My first issue was that they 'messed up' our reservation, which I placed with a third-party company (http://booking.com). I reserved two rooms for a specific date, and had the confirmation handy, but American Inn had the wrong dates. The front desk help, Beth, was borderline rude and portrayed the sentiment "I couldn't care less, you'll wait for me). The room itself was SO much smaller than any hotel/motel room I've ever been in, and the bed was similar to a fold-out sofa bed with lumpy pillows to boot. Parking was minimal, but as long as we got a spot - it's all good. Unfortunately, I could never recommend this place. We initially wanted Doubletree by Hilton, but they were booked up.
Also - it took FOREVER to get hot water. -

When my grandparents came to town for my graduation they stayed at the American Inn of Bethesda. The prices are good and they have an AARP discount. Given the AARP discount, you can imagine who this hotel caters to. This is not a stylish and hip boutique hotel. It is very utilitarian - small, basic rooms, no frills lobby, free continental breakfast. However, they do have free wifi, which you won't find at a Sheraton or Hyatt. The American Inn of Bethesda is in a location with lots of restaurants and a shuttle bus that will take you to the metro. The staff is very accommodating. For example, they loaned my grandparents an umbrella for the duration of their stay.
If you are looking for a trendy, luxurious hotel, this is not your place. However, if you just need a clean place to stay where you'll get free breakfast and free wifi, consider the American Inn of Bethesda.Listed in: A Traveler's Guide to DC

They have cheepish rooms but they are clean and the beds are comfortable. It's within walking distance of the Metro and several restaurants. They do have on-site parking, but they don't tell you that it's $25 a day. Not bad, but it's not something they should surprise you with when you're checking out. The front desk staff was very nice, and helpful. The girl at the front desk(I forgot her name.) helped us find a couple nice places to eat and gave us directions. It's also close to the Naval hospital, which was the reason for our trip. It'd be a pretty good walk if you decided to do that, but it's only one stop away on the Metro if you don't mind a little backtracking.

Okay....I'm just going to say that I adore American Inn. While looking for a place to stay, I camped out at American Inn. Great spot! Cute and boutiquish...not high end by any means. No view, no room service, and parking is limited, but FREE! All my basic needs for a hotel were met and exceeded...but I'm pretty low maintenance. I hate paying a lot for a room where I only spend a fraction of my time. For the commuter, I think it's ideal. There are laundry facilities where you can actually do your own laundry, comfortable, clean, quiet and adorable. Only five blocks from metro if you don't mind the walk. If so, they have a complimentary shuttle or there are bus stops along Wisconsin. Great staff too!
