Best organic pizza I've ever had! I went to the Summer Language School here in 2008 and found myself returning to this restaurant over and over. Every pizza had a distinct flavor to it that kept me coming back for more. Not only did I enjoy the pizza, but their selection of alcohol was excellent, as was the ambiance.
I recommend this restaurant to anyone that is lucky enough to be in Middlebury on the weekend. -

New Haven pizza it ain't but sit next to the wood burning pizza oven to warm up after crossing Marble Works bridge with your favorite Middlebury College student and you could do a lot worse.
The pizza...excuse me flatbread...is good to great. Veg friendly. The organic, locally sourced pizza and ingredients seem to fit right in here with no chain vibe which is perfect.
The bill for two parents, a high school junior and Middlebury freshman was around $80 including a few beers, from a nice selection.
Good not great service. Very relaxed and casual.
A very pleasant place to see your kid/student off after dinner to hit the party scene. This place is about a half mile away from the central campus. Hopefully we will see our high school junior in the morning in one piece. -

I went to American Flatbread for a birthday party. Since we were a big group of about 18, they didn't allow us to reserve a table in advance. We got there just a little before five and managed to grab two big tables. By 6 o'clock, the place was packed!
We ordered three types of pizzas, margherita, sweet sausage with mushroom, cheese, and mushroom. Nothing special about the cheese pizza and the mushroom pizza; the sweet sausage with mushroom was pleasantly flavorful -- the sweetness of the sausage really came through; and the margherita had wonderfully oven roasted red and yellow tomato slices on them.
The pizza crust was quite thin, not as thin as what you'd get in Italy, but somewhere in between a typical American-style pizza and an Italian thin crust. It had quite a crispy texture, which I quite enjoyed.
Prices are quite hefty. After quickly glancing through the menu, pizzas came out to about 35 dollars a pie. Kinda reminded me of Japan.
Their IPA draught was decent.
Finally, I really loved the brick oven that they have in the middle of the restaurant. Made the place feel very warm and cozy. I can imagine how comfortable this place must feel in the dead winter, especially here in Vermont! Loved watching the the pizza guy throwing in extra wood into the fire. Overall, quite nice, but nothing too special. -

American Flatbread has an interesting selection of 'hippie' pizzas which include fresh ingredients from local farms and providers. Don't expect a fluffy hearty crust, but most will not be disappointed. Pizzas are cooked in a brick oven and are quite delicious despite some the more obscure combinations of toppings.
Service was so-so. I was with a group of 6 and we waited a solid hour and a half for our first pizza, then it took another forty-five minutes to get our 3 other pizzas. Granted it was a busy Friday night but our server simply just forgot about our last pizza.
While you wait you do have a great beer and wine selection at very fair prices. Try Magic Hat's Circus Boy on-tap for $4.50, not bad at all.
Overall American Flatbread has great pizza and drinks, just prepare for the long hall on a busy night. -

Middlebury, VT
I Love American Flatbread, I moved to Middlebury a year ago and try to eat here whenever I can. I never worry about which bread I order because they are always delicious. Also it's very authentic, you can watch them make and bake the bread with local ingredients, theres something comforting about that! And I don't know what that person below is talking about, the most expensive bread I have ever seen there is $21 and it was a special, the ones on the menu start at $14. It doesn't seem too much more expensive than other pizza in town, and thats pretty good considering they use mostly local and/or organic food. Definitely one of the best restaurants in town. Cons: bad acoustics, It can get pretty loud, and if you go on a Friday or Saturday you may have to wait awhile for a table.

American Flatbread is a pizza benchmark by which others must be measured. Others have well documented the local ingredients and outstanding libations (in particular, Lincoln Peak is a notable local wine that's available there). There are too few wood-fired oven pizzerias, and this one is too good to be missed.
The staff reflect George Schenck's philosophical bent well, happily providing attentive friendly service every time.
Yeah, it's worth the wait and the money. -

How pizza should taste! The crisp VT air helps too. American Flatbread uses many organic & locally-farmed meats, veggies, and cheeses. Local before local was cool.

It's so tasty. It's made with fresh, almost always healthful ingredients. It's walkable from campus ('cept for maybe when it's cold out).
It's true that it can be crowded. I think it adds to the atmosphere instead of taking away.
I got my fill on about 20 dollars. It's so tasty that it's worth it. That, and I eat a lot.
Great if you're with someone who's been there and knows what's up or if no one in your party has any clue. Definitely better with people and not alone.
Try it out! -

Middlebury, VT
I really couldn't decide whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars...I went with 3 because I have two major gripes about the place. First is, the space they are in is HUGE but they only use about half for seating. Super annoying on busy night. Secondly, its expensive. We got two pizzas (which are pretty large, but not super filling) to go and it was $37 dollars. Each pizza will feed about 2 adults, maybe three if they have salad too.
Okay onto the good stuff. The pizza is super delicious, like could eat the whole thing by myself delicious. The woodfired crust is crispy and flavorful. They give a good amount of toppings (I actually had TOO much pepperoni on mine). There is a full bar for those who enjoy a libation or two. On a nice night I suggest picking it up to go and picnicing by the falls...much nicer than sitting inside (the restaurant is kind of dark). -
Review from Emily C.
Excellent locally- and seasonally-driven restaurant that specializes in flatbreads (hot and crisp from a giant earthen oven) and healthy, tasty salads. The ingredients were all of the highest quality, and specials were intriguing. We especially enjoyed a special flatbread (the "Veal Bolognese") which featured slices of roasted turnip and locally-sourced veal that was grounded and scattered on top of the flatbread with Vermont Ayr cheese, both from the Crawford Family Farm. They also have several local brews on tap - we had a Switchback Ale which paired well with our salad due to its yeasty and complex flavor. If we're ever back in Middlebury, we'll know where to grab a casual but intensely satisfying bite.

for all intents and purposes, this is a pizza place. The beer and wine selection is pretty good. Almost everything is local, and it's not expensive. The flatbread itself is good, but it doesn't quite contend with any of my favorite pizza joints.

Everyone at Middlebury talks this place up, and I had been looking forward to eating here for several weeks. Although I thought it was a little strange they are open 2 nights a week (before I found out the place is also a fully operational factory), I was not disappointed. We ordered 4 different flatbreads and each one was delicious (although I didn't care much for the venison one we ordered, but then again I don't eat a lot of red meat). One that was particularly good had lemon zest and asparagus. YUM. I made sure to save room for the apple and rhubarb compote for dessert.

This place was phenomenal. The artwork and decor were clearly chosen with love and a diverse group in mind. There is plenty of seating, lots of pizza and salad options, and best of all: original Burlington, VT draught root beer! We have a friend attending Breadloaf and when we mentioned we would be visiting, he said that we had to come here for dinner. We had the special pizza of the night which included black beans and broccoli among other toppings, as well as the ever-famous Punctuated Equilibrium. For dessert we had the night special, which was a lemon/lime custard with raspberries. The food was amazing. Our waitress was wonderful. Had an absolutely amazing time, and would go back again in a heartbeat.

A nice place to spend have dinner. Has a barnlike feel with red and white table clothes. Bustling and energetic, yet quite homey. The menu is limited: just flatbreads (a/k/a "pizza"), salads and desserts. A nice wine menu too. Fairly inexpensive, but beware: if you ask for extra sauce, expect a $2.00 charge which you won't know about until you get the bill.

Living in Chicago makes me appreciate AF in a way New Yorkers or New Havenites can't. It's not merely relative, though. This is delicious pizza (and salads and desserts) BECAUSE the cooks and owners CARE about the source of the ingredients. Some restaurants go local for press or show, but these guys know their suppliers and make the ingredients work to their fullest in the dishes.--worth the wait at the bar and great for kids when the weather allows them to run around outside

If you are up there in VT and looking for some nice, thin, crispy pizza - this is the place. keep in mind they have weird hours - only open on weekends 5-9:30, i suggest getting there early as they were very busy all the times we have been there. the restaurant is actually a commercial bakeshop where they produce their frozen pizzas - which are also very good if you can find them (check your local WholeFoods) - its the best frozen pizza i have ever had!! they had a bunch of local new england beers on tap, and when we were here they had some nice locally produced cinnamon ice cream from a nearby dairy farm topped with a bittersweet chocolate sauce from a kettle over the fire .. damn that was good. overall - an interesting experience and something more than the run of the mill pizzas you get everywhere else.

I have so many good memories here, including my 21st birthday dinner when I got really drunk and ran a huge drinks tab.
The beer, the wine, the ingredients are all local and the flatbread....OH THE FLATBREAD. Make sure to try their specials. They are usually the best options. It is definitely worth the long wait. And you WILL wait since everyone who wants to stuff their face with the delicious flatbread can only do so on the weekends and they don't take reservations. No worries though; you can drink and wait (and in the summer you can venture out to the "garden" with your ottercreek blackberry wheat in hand).
All this drinking makes me sound like an alcoholic but I swear, the divine food is what I'm evaluating and American Flatbread gets all 5. -

Employees are always efficient and happy...they seem to genuinely like working there. The food is so yum. Beer great. Fire warm and inviting, and the fire pit outdoors is fun and social. House salad with the sesame seeds is classic. Great family spot.

On a cold winter evening, get a table near the fire (or you might be a bit chilly). This restaurant sources organic whenever possible and they always have a special menu of strictly local food for the localvores. Their specials capitalize on what is in season locally and are always delicious. On the standard menu, the flatbread called "Punctuated Equilibrium" (PE) is my favorite. The clientele ranges from upscale to localvores to the grungy granola types, who all mix well as they enjoy the tasty food. They have an excellent wine list. The equilibrium salad is delicious. NOTE: They are only open Tuesday through Saturday, 5PM to 9:30PM

I can't imagine that there is a better pizza out there. They use only the freshest ingredients and combine them in such creative ways, it is pizza-making raised to an art form. And of course, what artist would be complete without his tools? In this case, it's the massive stone hearth they bake their pizzas in. Truly amazing to watch them tending the fire and the pizzas as they bake them to delicious perfection. And as if this place weren't already nirvana, they have a heavenly selection of local microbrews. Go. Eat. And fall in love.
