Review from Janice D.
I love my American Express Charge card. Never leave home without it. I use it for everything since you need to pay it off at the end of the month. The customer service is great and the perks are worth the annual fee.
Why pay crazy interest rates with credit cards or get no benefits with a debit card? With the Amex charge cards if you are a little low on cash you have a billing cycle to figure it out they are also slightly forgiving if you pay a day or 2 or 3 late.
I have a global entry card from american express (discounted) where I can travel and not deal with the lines of customs. (even if you do not have an amex Its worth the $199 fee if you travel often and your background is clean) The concierge service is great you can call them up and they will make reservations for you and offer alternatives if reservations are not available.
I have no problems with Amex, the only problem I can think of is that the charge cards do no good for your credit score because its not a credit card.
Also with their "shop small" campaign alot of stores are accepting of the card nowadays.
I'm sure the credit card options with amex are great also, but I try to keep away from using those bad boys. -

Hey Amex Blue. You know what? I like you. You're ok by me. I've had you since I graduated college and got my first job. You let me carry a balance when I lost that first job and needed you to pay my utilities. You're so easygoing and low-maintenance; you don't even have an annual fee, but you give me points anyway. Your webpage is so easy to use when I pay my bill online every month. PS I totally like your outfit... so cute when I put you down on the table or hand you to the cashier. And let's not forget all the times we went to Alta together. They only accept you. Because you are awesome.
I know why you are the way you are. You've had a nice upbringing. Whenever I have to call your parents, aka Amex customer service, I have no drama. They help me out. They even caught fraudulent charges, declined them, and called me immediately to process my replacement card. They know me so well, that they knew I wouldn't be spending $400 in Abercrombie. So just keep on doin' whatcha doin'. -

I love AMEX. I recently lost my credit card, didn't have the number or anything. I called customer service, was on hold for less than 5 minutes, answered a few security questions, and no hassles, no hard sell on upgraded security. Next day, UPS airmail, had my card in my hand.
Love their customer service! -

...another conversation, with another CEO.
AMEX: "Hello thank you for calling American Express."
Me: "Yea, cool, extension 713..."
Ken (The CEO): "Hello, this is Kenneth."
Me: "Yea hey Ken, its Seven...again."
Ken: "Sev! What up killa?!"
Me: "Yo just kickin it man, but i got some issues we gotta address Ken."
Ken: "Sup?"
Me: "Maaaaan, whats up with this minimum monthly payment bein jacked up on me without notice!?"
Ken: "Oh cmon Sev you know AMEX is just another corrupt corporation!"
Me: "Yea, but (and it hurts to say this) you guys actually used to be halfway decent!"
Ken: "What can i say, times are a changin bruh."
Me: "Yea, tell me about it Ken."
Ken: "Look, Sev...I know youve been a great 'customer' over the years. Im well aware that youve never missed, or had a late payment on ya account, but i cant do nuttin for ya on this."
Me: "How bout you at least bring my monthiy minimum back down to where its been?"
Ken: "Cant do it Sev."
Me: "Well, lemme put it to ya like this Ken, im not in a position where i can make this new (higher) monthly payment right now..."
Ken: "Sooooo?"
Me: "So, Ken, do ya want me to pay back the money i borrowed or not?!"
Ken: "Of course we do Sev, we jacked up the payments on everyone!"
Me: "Uh huh..."
Ken: "Its supposed to help our customers pay their balances quicker."
Me: "Oh is that the intention, or is it to help them default?"
Ken: "Doesnt matter to me, we can always get a bailout from the FED."
Me: "Yea, I know, the FED will step in to help yall, im still waiting for my bailout check and my shares of General Motors to arrive."
Ken: "Ha! You actually want shares in GM Sev!?"
Me: "Nah, not really, I just want AMEX to keep it real with me, but im kinda lost here Ken, lemme try and understand this. AMEX can continue to MAKE MONEY off of me by way of my monthly payment, or AMEX can LOSE MONEY by paying an outside collection agency to try and come after me for a balance i will never pay. Seems like it would be an easy decision. Wouldn't ya wanna work with a 'good standing customer' such as myself, so that I continue to pay back the money borrowed and you continue to make money?"
Ken: "Honestly Sev, it dont matter to me! According to http://Forbes.com, i (publically) made 17 million dollars last year, and my base pay increased 60% in 2010 according to Reuters.
Me: "Ya know what Ken? I give up man! You win! Well played....well played indeed. Loan me a few dollas to pay my minimum though ok?"
Ken: "Sev...I gotchoo killa, I gotchoo. We still on for the Skins/Giants game on Sunday?!"
Me: "Yea, I guess so Ken, but you gotta pay the parking fee!"
Ken: "Done. You twist the blunt though."
Me: "Always. Oh, and i got tix for the Jets/Giants game the week after, but I think im gunna invite someone I like."
Ken: "Unlike you Sev, I care if people like me. Please like me Sev."
Me: "Ken...I gotta be honest witcha playa, youre making it difficult for me."
Me: "Matter of fact, ive had enough of you Ken, ill see ya Sunday, pick me up early, I don't think they take AMEX at the stadium."Listed in: Politics; of the game., CEOS and stuff.

buyer beware! i reopened an account after 20 years. i closed the previous one because of poor customer service.
you would think that i would learn. they talk about completely protecting the consumer - it is a lie!!!
the first purchase i made was for a trip to thailand for me and my son -over $4000. that day i was diagnosed with a sinus infection. i thought no problem, amex has my back. how wrong i was.
i never agreed that the fee would be non-changeable. i was smart - booked on live chat so i could print the conversation.
once i was diagnosed i called cheapoair to cancel - it was the july 4th weekend and they didn't answer their phone!!!
i called american express and the representative told me - "don't board that plane". i taped it and he said it 4 times.
when i disputed the charge the supervisors and the appeals dept refused to speak to me. they awarded cheapo air $4124 and i never boarded the plane.
it is now my mission to inform every possible amex applicant -
buyer beware --- go to citibank master!! -

Despite the ups and downs we all have with corporations through our life, after 10 years of working for American Express, in balance I would say, it's a great company both to work for and to be a customer of.

This review is about American Express the corporation, which is at this address. I am no longer using their services, after decades as a client.
I've had a Amex accounts since 1980, and once upon a time, the company gave me a credit limit comparable to my annual salary, and I paid the balance each month. The card was useful world-wide, and I never worried about limits.
Over the years, I've seen Amex devolve into a credit card equivalent to others, with high interest rates, and reducing limits...and an annual fee. My limit was recently reduced to less than one-sixth my annual salary, with an interest rate double that offered by Charles Schwab FIA Card Services.
Enough is enough. There is no reason to PAY for the privilege of being an Amex customer. Schwab provides great service with no annual fee, and even Chase and US Bank offerings have better terms. -

This is NOT quite accurate but it will do. I have an AMERICAN EXPRESS
card thru Citi Bank. I also have an AMerican Express card thru COstco
and a plain, green AMEX which I will use on Saturday when, if you spend 25.0-0
at a specific merchant, they will give you 25.00 back!!! THat card must be
the plain green one, NOT one affiliated with a bank.
Well AMerican Express Client -First thru Citi Bank called me because my
account was past due by l0 days! I had a fit because I pay my bills
and because I had been in and paid the bill that had been presented to me
but apparently not the COMPLETE bill. I said if they did not deduct t he late payment and interest i would immediately cancel my card(S). Imediately, they agreed
that in this department, NOT CITI BANK itself, this could be done. I was
impressed. I did not receive a bill I said. They would send one. Well I have
yet to get the ones they said they would send but......I told them plain talk
that the Banking Industry has encounterd a lot of people who complain,
that they need to make a LOT Of changes and that they have not really
met the demands of their clients. THey said nothing but seemed to
understand..............I still think AMERICAN EXPRESS in all of its
many forms is first rate. BUT I think to deal with the Banking industry
requires more patience and tact than I will ever have. BTW: I ALWAYS
ask to speak to a supervisor when it is a good call and this time I talked
to "REECE" who had a british accent but who told me that AMERICAN
EXPRESS is now returning aLL OF ITS business to the US -no more
outsourcing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I do not understaned is why i could not pay more than the amount
due, because I will not be able to pay it when i get the next bill, as I
am going to be away. BUT AMERICAN EXPRESS CITI BANK
at least says y ou cannot do that!!!!!!! Go Figure. -

You tend to accumulate a lot of photos at the end of a really long trip. There may be a time, while attempting to view your most recent photo, when you accidentally hit the right-arrow button, bringing up the very first image you captured. And though you stare at a distant memory, you instantly recall what it felt like just being there, the warmth of the wind and the taste of the air.
I had a similar reaction while viewing my last credit card statement, as it details my entire East Coast trip...
7/27 - Jade Bar, SF ($20) - Last day of work. Had a few gin and sodas, among other things, and went for Chinese food, among other things, with beloved Yelpers. May have drunkenly stumbled through Cala Foods the same night. God, I hope not.
7/30 - REI, Berkeley ($40) - Picked up items for the trip. The last time I'll drive my car for a month. Night flight to Boston in two days. Should probably pack...
8/02 - MBTA, Boston ($5) - Arrived at Logan. Purchased a T pass. Went to Fenway and took the first photo: http://static.px.yelp....
8/03 - Stella, Boston ($39) - Only fine dining experience during my trip. Enjoyed homemade gnocchi and a pear martini. Went back to hostel and reviewed the restaurant drunk. Deleted review the next morning.
8/06 - Top of the Rock, NYC ($17) - Arrived in New York. Hung out above Rockefeller Center. Listened to Muse. Times Square: http://static.px.yelp....
8/07 - Jive Turkey, Brooklyn ($7) - Hiked through Brooklyn. Had a fried turkey sandwich from local cafe. Then, White Castle. Blech.
8/08 - Sbarro, NYC ($8) - Yeah, yeah... Wasn't completely sober... "Pizza research" conducted at four different places...
8/09 - Yelper Cruise, SF (-$17) - Sorry I couldn't make it. Heard cruise was a blast. Thanks for the refund.
8/10 - Verlaine, NYC ($12) - Second visit to Verlaine in a week. NY Yelpers sure love Verlaine... http://static.px.yelp....
8/11 - American Museum of Natural History, NYC ($30) - Developed a taste for Radiohead's, "Kid A," while in museums.
8/12 - Kramerbooks, DC ($22) - Beer from a bookstore. Hint of apple.
8/15 - Sunsation, VA Beach ($5) - Bought a beach towel. As exciting as this place got for me. Beach towel is blue.
8/18 - US Airways, Greensboro ($224) - Missed train. Purchased plane ticket to New Orleans an hour before flight.
8/20 - Mother's, NOLA ($16) - *drool* http://static.px.yelp....
8/20 - Urban Outfitters, NOLA ($22) - Second time I ever bought anything from Urban. Like a bizarro Abercrombie, with hipsters instead of jocks. Same everywhere.
8/21 - PJ's, NOLA ($2) - Iced tea at airport. Flight from MSY to SFO. Looked out plane window and took the last photo: http://static.px.yelp....
Warm feelings. Good memories. Cash back (thanks, AMEX).
...
But, damn it all, now I'll have to pay for it...Listed in: New York City!, Boston!, New Orleans!, Virginia Beach (and…, Washington, DC!

You know how Kanye West famously said "George Bush doesn't care about black people." (much to Mike Myers' dismay) on live TV?
Yeah, well, American Express doesn't care about poor--or at least non-rich--people! I've had it up to here with AmEx!
I'm a fantastic freakin' customer. I use my AmEx credit cards often, I pay a decent amount on my cards each month, and I've never had a late or missed payment. Hell, both of my cards currently have running balances meaning that, hey AmEx, you're even collecting finance charges from me! You should love me!
During the past year, for no reason other than the crappy economy, AmEx has raised my APRs to ridiculously high levels and severely cut my lines of credit. Absolutely LAUGHABLE when compared to my non-AmEx credit cards.
And I still recall with hatred how a brilliant AmEx rep called me early Sunday morning of 4th of July weekend last year. WHO DOES THAT?!
What a joke. -

So, a few years back, I was in Kuala Lumpur with a limited amount of cash, and an ATM card. Normally, ATM cards have worked for me in other countries with no real issues. But, for some reason my ATM was DOA and wouldn't work in ANY ATM. I was FREAKING OUT. I was on a weekend excursion from the town where my company's factory was, and had spent my last bits of cash on the taxi ride up.
So, there I was, in a foreign country with no cash. I called my bank and they told me they couldn't help me. Another credit card company told me that they couldn't help me either. Jerks. I called my last resort: AMEX. I told them about the situation, and the customer service person said that they could help me out. Utilizing their Global Assist Hotline, they were able to hook me up with a pin number to access an ATM (which thankfully worked).
So, 5 stars for helping a traveler that would have probably still been stranded on the streets of KL wishing for a way back home. -

For not being able to get my balance or print my account statement on my corporate AMEX card for 48-hours. Bleh! I am trying to reconcile my charges for the month here, people!
I'll take Visa or Mastercard any day over this. -

I have been a member with Amex since 1983...never late with my payments... rarely have any issue with Amex however i am about to cancel my card. why can't we speak to rep in the USA! I will not discuss my personal info with a person in Canada nor India. I thought i was dealing with American Express not Canada or India Express. amex's website offers a 'contact us' feature which is useless! they put you thru hoops by asking irrelevant questions not related to the issue you wish to discuss. Once you send what you can to them they thank you for your comments & advise you no individual comment will receive a response!! Duh!!! What's the use of the term 'contact us' ...does it mean we don't give a damm about your loyalty for 29 years??!!! Worst Customer Care' I have ever dealt with. Hey Amex please respond to my Yelp review!!! (P.S....If i could give Amex a minus star...I would)

I would never use any American Express product or service. Five years ago I started on a debt management program through Consumer Credit Counseling Service, who worked out a payment agreement with American Express and others. I paid as agreed and was never late, but their collection agency, NCO Financial Services, called me and harassed me for years, saying I was delinquent. Their collection representatives were aggressive, sarcastic, and offensive, and their information was inaccurate or falsified. I finally paid the entire balance off. Not long ago I was invited to accept the American Express Senior Gold Card. I politely declined.

Ok - reviews below seem to be on AMEX the card - and not on this location - which specialises in card services/travelers cheques/currency exchanges/travel..
For those that need to visit this location for those services - I will say that they are extremely helpful. I work at the WFC and needed to pick up some gift cards for a manager. Called down...and the representative (Rosie) remembered me as I came to her window. She took her time with me and I did not feel rushed. Smooth transaction...and will definitely return here. If I need foreign currency for my next trip - instead of getting it at the airport - think I'll pick it up here.....location is easy (for me)....and everyone was very helpful... And being a AMEX cardholder for 10 years helps too ;)
Also - I felt better buying the AMEX gift cards from here - rather than from Rite Aid/Duane Reade...and you won't have to worry about the stores not having the amount you need - as I needed multiple amounts.....
PS - I believe you can pay your bill here too if you don't have access to a computer which would be good for foreign travelers or anyone stuck in a jam. -

I love my AMEX card. On a night when your out with friends and you feel like getting a $1500 bottle of French red, it is AMEX to the rescue. When the bill comes and the French red makes you want to pay the bill, it is AMEX to the rescue. Tomorrow it will be, lucky I have a good job to the rescue. But I still love my AMEX.
