I stayed in a private room (with shared bathroom) for two nights.  I considered the experience to be a good value - my room had a sink (which minimizes the inconvenience of a shared bathroom) and window unit air conditioning.  I was able to sleep comfortably both nights - noise wasn't too bad.  The staff was courteous/professional and I found the building to be clean and in good condition. Convenient location, free wifi, breakfast and towels/linens.  Plus they had a nice lounge area with computers/printing.  I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to my friends.

I'll just make it as brief as possible:

    Pros:
-located in heart of Manhattan: few blocks away from subway(line 6), abount 11 blocks away from Penn Station(it not that much of a walk)
-Registered place in Super Shuttle(Airport ride service)
-Nice friendly staff, free breakfast from 7AM-11AM
    -Free WiFi
-Computer with internet & printing available
    -TOWELS AVAILABLE FOR FREE!

    Cons:
-Since it's in the heart of Manhattan, it takes a bit to get to the airport.
-shared bathroom unless in a private room (Personally I have no problem with this)

Overall, this place is a decent place to stay. $55/night, and meeting awesome new friends from all over the world?  Yeah I'll take that over some overpriced fancy crap hotel in NYC.

Remember, this is a hostel.  DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT EXPECT IT TO BE A FREAKIN' HOTEL FOR WHAT YOU PAID FOR.

Overall, there are a lot of good things about this hostel: very clean in the facility and the room, free breakfast, kitchen available, towels provided (though both were stained--really a minor issue), bathrooms were clean, location and nice neighborhood, and the private room (which I had) included a sink and a small (like the size of a piece of paper) tv.

The things that are not so good would probably cause me not to go back and the reason for the rating: the mattress and pillows were rock hard, the temperature in the room was very humid and hot and there was no way for me to adjust that (minus opening the window that didn't have a screen during the pouring rain), there was a huge gap at the bottom of the door letting in sound and light from the hallway, the kitchen was right next to my rooms so people were often up very late talking.  This last thing was expected in this environment, but with the sound so easily able to travel in--combined with the bedding and temperature--made it difficult to sleep.

For people who wouldn't have a problem with the issues I noted, this is a good place to stay.
